The Secret is Out...

As I travel throughout the community, it is not unusual for someone to stop and let me know how much they enjoy living in Wadsworth. So many people have chosen Wadsworth as a great community to live, work, and raise a family. Wadsworth has so much to offer. We really are fortunate to have the numerous downtown events, excellent schools and library, numerous retail and dining opportunities as well as many locations in which to relax, stay healthy and have fun.

Safety Director, Matthew Hiscock and I are very happy with the progress of a new fire station and headquarters building for our Fire and EMS Department. What had been just concepts and designs has become a reality and we couldn’t be happier. With a reduced construction cost of just over $9 million, we were able to make some cost saving decisions that allowed us to build a state-of-the-art building that will not only meet the current needs of our community and department, but we believe will also be scalable for our future needs. The project is currently on time and on budget as we continue to navigate building industry supply chain issues. Viewing real time progress is available by logging into our two (2) fire station site public cameras found on our city website. Exciting improvements are coming to Wadsworth Parks. The City recently completed a new Park and Trail Masterplan

to ensure future improvements made to the parks fit the vision and needs of the community for the next generation.

This year improvements will start in Memorial and Durling Parks with the hope to make improvements to all of our parks over the next 10 years.

In Memorial Park, updated features include the Kaleidoscope playground, small pavilions, tennis courts and restrooms. Planned additions will be pickle ball courts, a music venue, and a new memorial walk feature. Future additions will include an ice skating area, a splash pad, more courts, parking and roadways. Durling Park will feature updates that include new tennis, pickle ball, and basketball courts. Additional features will include new walkways, pavilion, and future features such as a hillside playground and restrooms.

Wadsworth The Best of Both Worlds

Wadsworth, Mayor Robin Laubaugh noted, is known for its community spirit. “We all wear our Grizzly red to the football and basketball games and other activities, and it’s not only the parents who are attending,” Laubaugh said. “These are really community events.”

The city’s tagline—“A Community Unmatched”—reflects a rich history of manufacturing wooden matches and other products. Today, Laubaugh said, Wadsworth offers the “best of both worlds”—a safe, small town atmosphere and a convenient location with highway access to anywhere. “We have this wonderful quaint downtown and we have a lot of nice retail and other amenities,” she said. “But we’re also nicely situated in Northeast Ohio where we have even more opportunities.”

That may be why Wadsworth has continued to be the fastest growing city in Medina County and one of the fastest growing cities in Ohio in recent years.

The town of about 24,000 residents offers ample park and recreation areas, an excellent library and top flight municipal services—including a publicly owned electric utility and publicly owned internet and communication services, Laubaugh said. “We offer significantly more services than the typical municipality - especially for a municipality of our size,” Laubaugh said. “Our publicly owned electric department, for example, is one of only 90 in the state of Ohio, and our internet, cable, and phone service is very rare.”

Businesses Flourishing

Those amenities are not only enjoyed by residents — they also provide advantages to local businesses, which may help to explain Wadsworth’s strong performance in economic development.

Last year, 24 business startups and expansion projects in the city resulted in almost $30 million in capital investment, Laubaugh reported. For example, Soprema Inc., offers roofing, waterproofing, wall protection and civil engineering solutions, and invested more than $12 million into its U.S. corporate headquarters and lab facilities.

ECS Tuning, a Wadsworth-based company and automobile parts supplier, invested almost $24 million to expand its

headquarters. “ECS is a company that had an opportunity to relocate out of our state, but they chose to stay here in Wadsworth,” Laubaugh said. “With their investment in the city we retained 300 jobs and, with the expansion, ECS is projected to create another 98 new full-time jobs.”

Celebrate Vitamins, a nutritional supplement provider, is expanding its facilities with an additional 15,000 square-foot building. “We’re hearing a lot of favorable things from our business community,” the mayor said. “They are experiencing growth. And our Downtown businesses also are doing well. All of those storefronts are filled, with no vacancies.”

Wadsworth’s dining and retail sector also is expanding. “Residents tell us that they have a great interest in more restaurants,” Laubaugh shared. “In an effort to spur development, we started a unique grant program to attract new restaurants or to help existing ones expand.”

Last year, four current restaurants were awarded grant money to expand and the city plans to issue another round of grants this spring. “The four grant recipients are investing almost $1.2 million for renovations and upgrades,” she said.

Last year’s recipients were:

• Sonnets, a New Orleans style coffee shop and whiskey bar received $18,000 toward a seating expansion and kitchen improvements;

• Great Oaks Tavern received $16,000 toward a seating expansion and kitchen expansion;

• Unwined Main Street, a casual cocktail, bourbon and wine bar, received $10,500 toward kitchen improvements; and

• Water Main Grille, a diner that specializes in breakfast and grill food, received $5,500 toward interior and exterior renovations.

The city also has a new grants program to assist businesses in the Match District, just south of Downtown near the historic match factory, to upgrade their building facades and lighting.

Parks and Roads

Upgrades in Wadsworth’s streets, infrastructure and parks also have been completed or are in development.

One major improvement last year was the October opening of the roundabout at the Route 57-Seville Road intersection.

“The traffic backup during peak times is roughly half of what it used to be and the intersection has been made safer by avoiding serious high speed accidents since the roundabout opened,” Laubaugh said.

Meanwhile development of a 10-year master plan for municipal parks is moving forward, the mayor said. “Our hope is to make improvements to all of our parks over the next 10 years,” she said. “With more than 2,300 responses to a public survey we conducted, we got a tremendous amount of feedback as far as what people think is needed in the parks, what they like about the parks and what needs to be renovated. We haven’t had an update to our park and trail master plan for quite some time, so this will provide direction to make improvements to our parks.”

Among the improvements will be the replacement of Kaleidoscope playground at Memorial Park. “Kaleidoscope is a beloved playground, but it’s almost 28 years old,” Laubaugh said. “It’s a wood structure and it is at the end of its youthful life.”

Other Memorial Park improvements are expected to ultimately include additional pavilions, tennis courts and restrooms along with pickle ball courts, a music venue, an ice skating area and a splash pad. At Durling, updated features will include new tennis, pickle ball and basketball courts, new walkways and pavilions.

A permanent Safety Town and a 911 Memorial are planned directly behind the city’s new fire station, which is expected to open this fall. Safety Town will feature miniature buildings that local businesses will have the opportunity to sponsor.

“The new Safety Town will be accessible from Memorial Park,” Laubaugh said.

Beautify Wadsworth

Through the new Beautify Wadsworth program, businesses and residents will be encouraged to help make the city look great, said Robert Patrick, Director of Public Service. The initiative will recognize homes and businesses that

have done exemplary work on landscaping to installing attractive features.

The local government, meanwhile, is planning landscape improvements at the I-76-Route 94 interchange, Patrick said. “It’s a major gateway to our community and we want to make it look nicer as people enter,” he said.

Strong Finances

The city’s cost of financing new projects has been lowered due to a strong bond rating, Laubaugh announced. Last year, Standard and Poor’s boosted the city’s general obligation bond rating from AA to AA+, a stellar achievement, especially for a city its size, especially coming out of a pandemic and considering the uncertainty of the economy, the mayor said. “Standard and Poor’s [S&P Global Ratings] reported that our rating was based upon the city’s budgetary performance, liquidity, moderate debt and strong management,” she said.

Active Wadsworth residents Ron and Kathleen Paydo were awarded the annual Key to the City during Mayor Robin Laubaugh’s State of the City address in February. “During much of their 35year marriage Kathleen and Ron, along with their four biological children, have opened their home to those in need,” Laubaugh said. “They have been licensed foster parents in both Medina and Summit counties and specialize in both medically fragile children and large sibling groups. They have fostered more than 160 foster children from all over Ohio. During a 10-year break they took to raise their own young children, they hosted seven foreign exchange students through the Rotary Club of Wadsworth.”

Ron Paydo has worked for Huntington Bank for 35 years and is currently the community president for Huntington Bank in Medina County. He serves on the boards of directors of the Wadsworth Salvation Army; YMCA of Summit and Medina County; Red Cross of Summit, Medina and Portage Counties; and Boys Scouts of the Great Trail Council, and has also served on a variety of other local boards.

Kathleen Paydo is a retired registered nurse who worked at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital for 22 years and Sacred Heart School for four years. The author of the book, Fostering Love: A Glimpse into Foster Care, she speaks to county, government and educational groups to promote foster care.

The Paydos have served as local scout leaders and have been members of Sacred Heart Parish since moving to Wadsworth in 1987.

Wadsworth City Schools is a triple-A school district, emphasizing Academics, Arts, and Athletics. The school district is comprised of eight school buildings, including five elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school, and one high school. Total enrollment is approximately 4,500 students.

Wheelchair basketball is a new athletic offering for the 2022-2023 school year.

The district offers a host of extracurricular activities in which students can participate, including sports, vocal and instrumental music, Drama Club, Academic Challenge, N.F.L. Speech and Debate, Chess Club, and Student Council, to name a few. There is also a before-and-after-school child care program called Bear Cub Academy for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Parents/Guardians are very active in the district with numerous booster clubs to support academics, sports, and band. The City of Wadsworth Mayor Robin L. Laubaugh

Robin L. Laubaugh is serving her fourth four-year term as Mayor of Wadsworth. As Chief Executive Officer to the city government of Wadsworth, one of her most important duties are to oversee day-to-day operations and set the strategic goals and direction of the city. Her appointments of the Director of Public Service, the Director of Human Resources, the Director of Public Safety, and the Director of Economic Development, help the Mayor to effectively administer city services to Wadsworth’s over 24,000 residents and to supervise the city’s 204 full-time, 14 part-time, and 47 Fire and EMS volunteers.

Additionally, the Mayor appoints many citizens to serve on more than 20 volunteer commissions and boards that benefit the whole community. Mayor Laubaugh regularly participates in City Council meetings, where she has the power to sign new legislation adopted by City Council or veto those ordinances that she opposes. Between city meetings, Mayor Laubaugh is busy attending various community events, meetings with officials from other municipalities, and other key functions.

Main Street Wadsworth is one of only 22 state-accredited and nationallyaccredited Main Street Program in the State of Ohio. As Wadsworth’s downtown revitalization non-profit, we are bringing our historic downtown back to life through preservationbased economic development. Since 2016 we have seen 40 new small businesses open creating over 200 new jobs, the coordination of $500,000 in grants resulting in 83 historic building improvements and over $3 million dollars in public/private investment, 160 community events, 19,000 volunteer hours donated by our community, and in 2022 the downtown storefronts attained 100% occupancy for the first time.

The City provides a 96 gallon wheeled cart for residential waste. Carts are to be placed near the street after 7:00 PM the night before collection, as the crews collect through the night. The Water Treatment Plant is a 24/7 operation committed to providing the highest quality drinking water and fire protection to the citizens of Wadsworth. The City maintains a series of groundwater wells that pump to the plant for a multi-step purification process, ending in treated water flowing through the distribution system to homes and businesses.

For sanitary sewer collection, our responsibilities begin with the sanitary sewer in front of the residence/business and end at the City of Wadsworth Wastewater Treatment Plant, where wastewater is treated, ending in clean water being returned to the River Styx.

Apple Slaw

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and once you crunch on some Apple Slaw, you’ll be craving it on the daily–which is basically the same thing, right? It’s technically even better for you, too, because there’s nourishing cabbage, crunchy carrots, sweet red bell peppers, and fresh green onions mixed with the crispy red and Granny Smith apples. Covered in a creamy, sweet dressing, Apple Slaw will have you feeling fine and dandy!

3 cups cabbage, chopped

1 red apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 Granny Smith apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 carrot, grated

1/2 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped

2 green onions, finely chopped

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1. In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, red apple, Granny Smith apple, carrot, red bell pepper, and green onion.

2. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, brown sugar, and lemon juice. 3. Pour the dressing over the salad.

4. Serve.
