The Secret is Out...

As I travel throughout the community, it is not unusual for someone to stop and let me know how much they enjoy living in Wadsworth. So many people have chosen Wadsworth as a great community to live, work, and raise a family. Wadsworth has so much to offer. We really are fortunate to have the numerous downtown events, excellent schools and library, numerous retail and dining opportunities as well as many locations in which to relax, stay healthy and have fun.

Safety Director, Matthew Hiscock and I are very happy with the progress of a new fire station and headquarters building for our Fire and EMS Department. What had been just concepts and designs has become a reality and we couldn’t be happier. With a reduced construction cost of just over $9 million, we were able to make some cost saving decisions that allowed us to build a state-of-the-art building that will not only meet the current needs of our community and department, but we believe will also be scalable for our future needs. The project is currently on time and on budget as we continue to navigate building industry supply chain issues. Viewing real time progress is available by logging into our two (2) fire station site public cameras found on our city website. Exciting improvements are coming to Wadsworth Parks. The City recently completed a new Park and Trail Masterplan

to ensure future improvements made to the parks fit the vision and needs of the community for the next generation.

This year improvements will start in Memorial and Durling Parks with the hope to make improvements to all of our parks over the next 10 years.

In Memorial Park, updated features include the Kaleidoscope playground, small pavilions, tennis courts and restrooms. Planned additions will be pickle ball courts, a music venue, and a new memorial walk feature. Future additions will include an ice skating area, a splash pad, more courts, parking and roadways. Durling Park will feature updates that include new tennis, pickle ball, and basketball courts. Additional features will include new walkways, pavilion, and future features such as a hillside playground and restrooms.

Please enjoy this 2023 Wadsworth Community Guide. This valuable resource is updated annually and provides information about our city and local organizations while showcasing the many businesses and people that make Wadsworth the great place that it is. This publication is provided free of charge due to the generous sponsorships from organizations and businesses in the community. Wadsworth is the place to be and is a Community Unmatched!

Serving Wadsworth for over 30 Years!

Van's Tire has been in the Wadsworth community for over 30 years. Joshua Baughman took over the Wadsworth location in September of 2013, and updated the name to Van's Auto Service & Tire Pros. Since then, 12 more locations have been added to the Van's family of stores in Northeast and Central Ohio.

Van's specializes in personalized auto service and tire sales, taking great pride in making sure that each customer walks away happy and well taken care of. We provide a digital vehicle inspection with every visit that includes pictures, which is helpful in giving an honest and transparent assessment of each vehicle. We are a full service shop that handles oil changes, brakes, alignments, suspension work, engine and transmission repair.

Stop by or call us Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 6:00 pm and Saturdays from 7:30 to 3:00 pm. Or visit us at www.vanstirepros.com!

Wadsworth The Best of Both Worlds

Wadsworth, Mayor Robin Laubaugh noted, is known for its community spirit. “We all wear our Grizzly red to the football and basketball games and other activities, and it’s not only the parents who are attending,” Laubaugh said. “These are really community events.”

The city’s tagline—“A Community Unmatched”—reflects a rich history of manufacturing wooden matches and other products. Today, Laubaugh said, Wadsworth offers the “best of both worlds”—a safe, small town atmosphere and a convenient location with highway access to anywhere. “We have this wonderful quaint downtown and we have a lot of nice retail and other amenities,” she said. “But we’re also nicely situated in Northeast Ohio where we have even more opportunities.”

That may be why Wadsworth has continued to be the fastest growing city in Medina County and one of the fastest growing cities in Ohio in recent years.

The town of about 24,000 residents offers ample park and recreation areas, an excellent library and top flight municipal services—including a publicly owned electric utility and publicly owned internet and communication services, Laubaugh said. “We offer significantly more services than the typical municipality - especially for a municipality of our size,” Laubaugh said. “Our publicly owned electric department, for example, is one of only 90 in the state of Ohio, and our internet, cable, and phone service is very rare.”

Businesses Flourishing

Those amenities are not only enjoyed by residents — they also provide advantages to local businesses, which may help to explain Wadsworth’s strong performance in economic development.

Last year, 24 business startups and expansion projects in the city resulted in almost $30 million in capital investment, Laubaugh reported. For example, Soprema Inc., offers roofing, waterproofing, wall protection and civil engineering solutions, and invested more than $12 million into its U.S. corporate headquarters and lab facilities.

ECS Tuning, a Wadsworth-based company and automobile parts supplier, invested almost $24 million to expand its

 Continued on page 5 CITY OVERVIEW 4 Wadsworth Magazine & Community Guide | 2023-2024

headquarters. “ECS is a company that had an opportunity to relocate out of our state, but they chose to stay here in Wadsworth,” Laubaugh said. “With their investment in the city we retained 300 jobs and, with the expansion, ECS is projected to create another 98 new full-time jobs.”

Celebrate Vitamins, a nutritional supplement provider, is expanding its facilities with an additional 15,000 square-foot building. “We’re hearing a lot of favorable things from our business community,” the mayor said. “They are experiencing growth. And our Downtown businesses also are doing well. All of those storefronts are filled, with no vacancies.”

Wadsworth’s dining and retail sector also is expanding. “Residents tell us that they have a great interest in more restaurants,” Laubaugh shared. “In an effort to spur development, we started a unique grant program to attract new restaurants or to help existing ones expand.”

Last year, four current restaurants were awarded grant money to expand and the city plans to issue another round of grants this spring. “The four grant recipients are investing almost $1.2 million for renovations and upgrades,” she said.

Last year’s recipients were:

• Sonnets, a New Orleans style coffee shop and whiskey bar received $18,000 toward a seating expansion and kitchen improvements;

• Great Oaks Tavern received $16,000 toward a seating expansion and kitchen expansion;

• Unwined Main Street, a casual cocktail, bourbon and wine bar, received $10,500 toward kitchen improvements; and

• Water Main Grille, a diner that specializes in breakfast and grill food, received $5,500 toward interior and exterior renovations.

The city also has a new grants program to assist businesses in the Match District, just south of Downtown near the historic match factory, to upgrade their building facades and lighting.

Parks and Roads

Upgrades in Wadsworth’s streets, infrastructure and parks also have been completed or are in development.

One major improvement last year was the October opening of the roundabout at the Route 57-Seville Road intersection.

“The traffic backup during peak times is roughly half of what it used to be and the intersection has been made safer by avoiding serious high speed accidents since the roundabout opened,” Laubaugh said.

Meanwhile development of a 10-year master plan for municipal parks is moving forward, the mayor said. “Our hope is to make improvements to all of our parks over the next 10 years,” she said. “With more than 2,300 responses to a public survey we conducted, we got a tremendous amount of feedback as far as what people think is needed in the parks, what they like about the parks and what needs to be renovated. We haven’t had an update to our park and trail master plan for quite some time, so this will provide direction to make improvements to our parks.”

Among the improvements will be the replacement of Kaleidoscope playground at Memorial Park. “Kaleidoscope is a beloved playground, but it’s almost 28 years old,” Laubaugh said. “It’s a wood structure and it is at the end of its youthful life.”

Other Memorial Park improvements are expected to ultimately include additional pavilions, tennis courts and restrooms along with pickle ball courts, a music venue, an ice skating area and a splash pad. At Durling, updated features will include new tennis, pickle ball and basketball courts, new walkways and pavilions.

A permanent Safety Town and a 911 Memorial are planned directly behind the city’s new fire station, which is expected to open this fall. Safety Town will feature miniature buildings that local businesses will have the opportunity to sponsor.

“The new Safety Town will be accessible from Memorial Park,” Laubaugh said.

Beautify Wadsworth

Through the new Beautify Wadsworth program, businesses and residents will be encouraged to help make the city look great, said Robert Patrick, Director of Public Service. The initiative will recognize homes and businesses that

have done exemplary work on landscaping to installing attractive features.

The local government, meanwhile, is planning landscape improvements at the I-76-Route 94 interchange, Patrick said. “It’s a major gateway to our community and we want to make it look nicer as people enter,” he said.

Get Key to the City

Paydo

Strong Finances

The city’s cost of financing new projects has been lowered due to a strong bond rating, Laubaugh announced. Last year, Standard and Poor’s boosted the city’s general obligation bond rating from AA to AA+, a stellar achievement, especially for a city its size, especially coming out of a pandemic and considering the uncertainty of the economy, the mayor said. “Standard and Poor’s [S&P Global Ratings] reported that our rating was based upon the city’s budgetary performance, liquidity, moderate debt and strong management,” she said.

Active Wadsworth residents Ron and Kathleen Paydo were awarded the annual Key to the City during Mayor Robin Laubaugh’s State of the City address in February. “During much of their 35year marriage Kathleen and Ron, along with their four biological children, have opened their home to those in need,” Laubaugh said. “They have been licensed foster parents in both Medina and Summit counties and specialize in both medically fragile children and large sibling groups. They have fostered more than 160 foster children from all over Ohio. During a 10-year break they took to raise their own young children, they hosted seven foreign exchange students through the Rotary Club of Wadsworth.”

Ron Paydo has worked for Huntington Bank for 35 years and is currently the community president for Huntington Bank in Medina County. He serves on the boards of directors of the Wadsworth Salvation Army; YMCA of Summit and Medina County; Red Cross of Summit, Medina and Portage Counties; and Boys Scouts of the Great Trail Council, and has also served on a variety of other local boards.

Kathleen Paydo is a retired registered nurse who worked at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital for 22 years and Sacred Heart School for four years. The author of the book, Fostering Love: A Glimpse into Foster Care, she speaks to county, government and educational groups to promote foster care.

The Paydos have served as local scout leaders and have been members of Sacred Heart Parish since moving to Wadsworth in 1987.

“Client Service First”

Crossroads Home loans is CELEBRATING 15 YEARS of “Lending Made Easy” in Medina County, says local owner and mortgage wholesale broker, Lisa Puto.

Lisa and her team of mortgage and commercial loan specialists pride themselves on making the entire transaction process flow seamlessly through user friendly artificial intelligence and advanced technology. “I have always been a relationship-driven person”, says Lisa, “my team and I take great pride in helping clients realize their dreams.”

“The most frequently asked question I get is ‘is the market still good?’ The answer is YES! Multiple offers are still

coming in! It’s a good time to buy. The biggest misconception is that rates are too high. Rates are actually still considered low, and today you can afford a lot more with a lot less down! There are even grants available to qualifying buyers, which are surprisingly easy to obtain. As for the future and especially our young consumers (Gen Z and Gen Alpha) we foresee a shortage in housing, so qualifying and buying now is important.”

Crossroads puts your needs first and will quickly refer you to a Realtor and team up with your financial advisors to expedite the process. Whether purchasing or refinancing and whether it is your first home or multiple commercial properties, they are ready to close your transaction.

Lisa feels strongly about giving back to the community and feels blessed to be able to touch lives by supporting a wide variety of Wadsworth and county wide organizations and nonprofits, along with many other charities.

“Ibegan my journey as pastor of Northside Christian Church nearly 40 years ago,” states Pastor Robin Hart.

“Throughout this journey, we have become a family. We have experienced a lot of love, life, and laughter. We have witnessed great joy in weddings and births; we have watched children become adults and start their own families. But we have also counseled those who are struggling with their marriage or with finances; we have grieved with those who have lost loved ones.”

Each and every one of us is on a life journey, and every journey starts somewhere. “We believe that when the gospel is introduced into someone’s journey, it has the power to change their life,” states Pastor Hart. If your journey is currently full of joy or full of frustration, whether you are already firmly committed to following Christ or searching to find out who He is – no matter where you are, Northside is a family that would love to join you on your journey.

When to Call an Orthopedic Specialist

Have you noticed a decreased range of motion? Instability while walking or standing? Progressive weakness in your arms or legs? Or pain, stiffness or discomfort that’s making daily activity difficult? If so, it’s time to call an orthopedic specialist. Orthopedic specialists care for conditions related to bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments, muscles and tendons with both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options.

Nonsurgical specialists, or primary care sports medicine providers, strive to reduce pain, improve mobility and minimize the risk of further injury without surgical intervention. They focus on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as:

u Sprains and strains

u Overuse injuries causing joint or back pain

u Tendonitis and tendinosis

u Dislocations or fractures

u Stress fractures

u Arthritis

Sports medicine physicians also treat and manage sportsrelated concussions, help improve athletic performance, and expedite referrals to orthopedic surgeons if surgery or a more complex treatment is needed.

Orthopedic surgeons repair, reconstruct or revise broken bones and injuries to muscles and tendons by performing numerous types of procedures, including fusion, joint replacement and soft tissue. Whenever possible, they utilize minimally invasive techniques, which often results in faster recovery.

Both nonsurgical and surgical orthopedic specialists work with providers in therapy, rehabilitation and pain management to optimize treatment. Together, the goal is to improve function and mobility, reduce or eliminate pain, and improve your quality of life.

So don’t ignore your symptoms. Call the Summa Health Orthopedic Institute specialists now at 888.203.0715 for an evaluation or visit summahealth.org/ortho for more information.

Benefits of a Move-In Ready Home

When buying a house, would you prefer a home that’s a fixer-upper or one that’s move-in ready? While some buyers enjoy the challenge and can manage the cost of fixing up a home, there are many who prefer the perks of a movein ready home. These home buyers would rather not worry about remodeling, extensive maintenance work, and finding contractors. They want a house that is ready to be lived in, with ample amenities, minimal maintenance issues, and everything they need to feel at home.

Minimal Maintenance Issues to Worry About

It’s nice to know exactly what you’re getting with a move-in ready house, and even nicer not to worry about investing the time and money required to fix up a fixer-upper. A movein ready home should not have any significant deferred maintenance, which means less time heading to the hardware store or calling contractors after you move in. Instead, you can focus on making your new house feel like home.

Get Started Quickly in a New Location

There are always a ton of little things to take care of when you move to a new location, and some buyers don’t have the time to devote to fixing up a home while still taking care of other priorities. Buying a move-in ready home can significantly lessen your workload when you move to a new community, so you can keep the focus on the tasks that matter most to you.

Fewer Big Investments After Moving In

Minimal maintenance issues are a nice start, but that’s not all that you should expect when purchasing a move-in ready home. Major systems in the house, like HVAC systems, plumbing, and electrical systems, should all be in solid condition with a move-in ready home. Since those systems often account for some of the biggest costs in updating a fixer-upper, your budget can really benefit from choosing a move-in ready home instead.

When you’re shopping for a home, it’s important to understand the benefits of a move-in ready home. The ability to move in right away, get comfortable, and hit the ground running in a new location is a huge draw for many new buyers and one you may want to take into consideration during your search.

For help in your home search, contact Amanda Ondrey at MC Real Estate at 330-802-9618.

Supporting Successful Aging!

Soprema Senior Center & Café, located at 617 School Drive onWadsworth’svibrant,multi-generational Community Center campus, is the premier gathering place in the area for senior citizens. A department of the City of Wadsworth, the Center serves the fastest growing population and takes great pride in offering traditional senior programming along with a wide array of new and innovative opportunities. Membership to the senior center is free to those aged 55+ living in Wadsworth and the surrounding communities.

The

Known as a “Senior Center Without Walls” since the pandemic, the Soprema Senior Center continues to use technology in innovative ways, such as hybrid programming, which gives participants the unique option to attend in person or from home (or even while traveling!). In 2023, their vast array of opportunities has expanded like never before. Stop in to pick up the latest newsletter and calendar of events or visit their website at www.wadsworthcity.com/Soprema SeniorCenter. The Soprema Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:00pm.

The Soprema Café, freshly reopened in the spring of 2023 with new operator Medina County Office for Older Adults, truly makes the Soprema Senior Center very unique. The Soprema Café is open weekdays from 7:30am – 2:00pm and offers a nice variety of delicious food options, including breakfast, daily lunch specials, coffee and much more. Open to the public, the Soprema Café serves as a dining hot spot for the community as well as a special gathering place for seniors. Be sure to make plans to check out and patronize this local gem – you will be glad that you did!

The Soprema Senior Center is supported by the City of Wadsworth, the Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation (WOAF) and many Professional Friends. Through their generous support, senior center membership perks include free daily programs and activities, a discount in the Soprema Café, a quarterly newsletter publication (mailed to Wadsworth City members) as well as access to the YMCA indoor walking track during designated times. Donations are accepted from the community through the Wadsworth Older Adults Foundation

which is a 501(c)(3). The WOAF’s generous support plays a huge role in the offerings that the Center is able to provide to seniors. You can learn more about them at www.wadsworth olderadultsfoundation.org or by following them on Facebook. Be sure to notice the beautiful pavilion on the patio and the much needed awning structure over the front doors (just built in spring 2023), both donated by the WOAF. Both of those major updates not only serve as the Center’s new outdoor landmarks, the pavilion has also expanded programming and dining opportunities and the awning provides seniors with much needed protection from the elements.

The best way to learn more about the Soprema Senior Center & Café and their “unmatched” level of service is to simply stop by in person, treat yourself to a cup of coffee, pastry or delicious meal and see everything in action! You can also contact the Center via email at ssc@wadsworthcity.org or by phone at 330-335-1513. New members and visitors are always welcome!

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders identifies 11 anxiety disorders. Although each disorder is different and manifests in unique ways, the phenomena of anxiety is generally derived from a similar origin. Anxiety is fear. Consider these ideas for yourself & loved ones:

• Take a time-out. Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, or get a massage.

• Eat well-balanced meals. Do not skip any meals. Do keep healthful, energy-boosting snacks on hand.

• Limit alcohol & caffeine

• Get enough sleep. When stressed, your body needs additional sleep.

• Exercise daily

• Take deep breaths. Inhale & exhale slowly.

• Count to 10 slowly. Repeat, & count to 20 if necessary.

• Accept that you cannot control everything.

As always, professional help is just around the corner and available at Wolf Creek Wellness, Wadsworth, Ohio’s premiere mental health practice.

Wadsworth Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection

330-335-2830

The City of Wadsworth provides both of these services to the community in order to make sure we have an adequate supply, maintaining low rates and providing efficient services. The Water Treatment Plant is a 24/7 operation committed to providing the highest quality drinking water and fire protection to the citizens of Wadsworth. The City maintains a series of groundwater wells that pump to the plant for a multi-step purification process, ending in treated water flowing through the distribution system to homes and businesses.

For sanitary sewer collection, our responsibilities begin with the sanitary sewer in front of the residence/business and end at the City of Wadsworth Wastewater Treatment Plant, where wastewater is treated, ending in clean water being returned to the River Styx.

Apple Slaw

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and once you crunch on some Apple Slaw, you’ll be craving it on the daily–which is basically the same thing, right? It’s technically even better for you, too, because there’s nourishing cabbage, crunchy carrots, sweet red bell peppers, and fresh green onions mixed with the crispy red and Granny Smith apples. Covered in a creamy, sweet dressing, Apple Slaw will have you feeling fine and dandy!

3 cups cabbage, chopped

1 red apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 Granny Smith apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 carrot, grated

1/2 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped

2 green onions, finely chopped

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1. In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, red apple, Granny Smith apple, carrot, red bell pepper, and green onion.

2. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, brown sugar, and lemon juice. 3. Pour the dressing over the salad.

4. Serve.
