The Economy of the Stara Zagora Region According to data from the Stara Zagora office of the National Revenue Agency, 59,356 companies had active businesses in the region at the beginning of 2011. That number includes 58 corporations, which are large taxpayers and report their tax data to Sofia, and 158 companies (medium-sized taxpayers), who report their tax data to Plovdiv. The Stara Zagora District has 8,166 companies, which are registered under the Value Added Tax Act. Observations by the National Statistical Institute, encompassing 14,427 companies from the Stara Zagora District, determine the total net revenue during 2009 amounted to be 6.8 billion leva. Products were produced worth 4.8 billion leva (see more detailed values in the table on page 57). The greatest share of net revenue belonged to the Commercial sector. It generated more than 2.4 billion leva in revenue and that is 35.6% of the total amount of net revenue. Companies from the manufacturing industry had a 20% share of the total net revenue (1.4 billion leva); the largest share in that industry belonged to the companies in the food and beverages sector, which attained 484 million leva in net revenue. The construction sector ranked third with a 14% share of the total amount of net revenue (950 million leva). Companies from the Stara Zagora District produced 4.8 billion leva in products, but that is approximately 400 million leva less in comparison with the previous year. Large companies, which have more than 251 employees, were 33 in number in Stara Zagora District during 2009. At the beginning of 2011 a total of approximately 30 thousand people work for them. The largest employer is the Mini Maritsa Iztok EAD coalmining association, where more than 7400 people work. The highest Workforce Productivity was attained by Kalvacha Gaz AD, where, on average, each employee contributed 706 thousand leva in revenue to the company via his/her labour. The company trades liquid and gaseous fuels. Globus, Ltd., a company which performs specialised construction activities, attained a Workforce Productivity of 299,000 leva, while Panchim, Ltd., a company which produces plastic items, attained 263,000 leva.
