Course Outline Module One An Introduction To Information And Communication In Healthcare In Module One, you will examine the fundamental importance of information and communication in healthcare. You will explore how you can begin to respond to the day-to-day challenges of information management by identifying your own information requirements, as well as those of your service, department, hospital or health system. • Why is information and communication important in healthcare? – Identify the major contemporary trends and challenges in healthcare information and communication management • Standards governing the management and communication of healthcare information – Identify the broad variety of standards and classifications used to make the management and communication of healthcare information easier • Legal and ethical issues in healthcare information management – Understand the moral duties and regulatory controls you face when handling healthcare information

• Types of decision and their information needs – Identify the ‘critical success factors’ when making healthcare management decisions • Decision-making and problem-solving methods – Understand the role of information at each stage in both rational and other decision-making or problem-solving processes

Module Four Knowledge Management In Healthcare Knowledge management in healthcare is all about aligning people, processes, data and technologies to drive organisational performance and growth. Multinational companies such as Shell, IBM and Hewlett-Packard are famous for their application of knowledge management principles and in Module Four we consider the value of knowledge management in hospitals and health systems. • Healthcare knowledge management – Understand what it is and why we need it • Turning knowledge into action to improve healthcare quality – Understand how healthcare organisations can use knowledge in ways that improve safety, effectiveness and the patient experience

Module Two Managing Healthcare Information In Module Two, you will explore, in depth, the fundamental processes of information management in healthcare: how to find sources of reliable data, how to organise it in useful ways so that it becomes ‘information’ in the true sense of the word and how to then analyse it in order to create and share meaningful knowledge. • Developing information sources – Identify the sources of data in a healthcare organisation or system • Organising information – Understand how to transform raw data into information • Analysing and presenting information – Understand how to analyse information in order to create knowledge, make decisions and generate forecasts

Module Three Decision-Making And Problem-Solving In Healthcare In Module Three, you will examine the relationship between information and decisions, exploring how the accuracy of decisions depends upon the accuracy of information. You will discover how, in the absence of good information, it is difficult to take a rational approach to decision-making and why other approaches might therefore have to be used.

Module Five Information And Communication Technologies In Healthcare Throughout this course we have stressed that information and communication management covers all kinds of information, and is as much about paper-based systems as it is about computers. In Module Five, however, the emphasis is on technology-based systems and the role of the healthcare manager or clinician in procuring and developing such systems. • Healthcare information and communication technologies – Identify the many types of information and communication technologies available to healthcare organisations today • Specifying and procuring information systems – Understand how to collaborate with intended users to design and develop a healthcare information system for your department or organisation • Achieving change through healthcare IT – Examine the management issues that arise when new information systems and technologies are introduced into a healthcare organisation
