GREETINGS FROM IIDA MID AMERICA ALISSA WEHMUELLER CHAPTER PRESIDENT As I begin the last few months of my Chapter Presidency, this award submission has been the perfect opportunity to step back and look at the year behind us. I am continually energized by this Chapter and the communities that make it what it is. When we began working on this Chapter submission, we thought what better way to tell you about IIDA Mid America than through our member’s words and projects. Throughout this submission you’ll find photos of our member’s projects, winners at our Mid America Design Awards. There is beautiful, nationally recognized work being done by the designers in this Chapter. We have talented designers and a wonderful network of supportive industry members. Mixed throughout the pages you’ll find quotes from students, associate and professional members, industry members and community supporters after we asked them “what’s your favorite thing about IIDA?”

At this time a year ago I set the following goals for our Chapter: + Engage our experienced designers and firm leaders. Get them involved in developing our events, leading our volunteers and mentoring our young designers. + Develop the relationship with our student members. Create resourceful events for them and engage them in the planning process. Become a support system they want to continue being a part of the day the graduate. + Strengthen our relationship with other professional design organizations by collaborating on events and initiatives. I invite you to read through our submission to discover how we’ve been working towards achieving these goals in so many ways.

While I’m excited to share this submission with you, I’m most excited to share it with our members. I’m truly proud to be a part of this Chapter, I can’t wait to see what we do next.

MENTORSHIP LEADING THE WAY

In 2012, one of our professional members, Audrie Wenger, the Director of Interiors at Treanor Architects, saw the need for mentors among young designers. Audrie reached out to the IIDA board and we set out to create the group Leading the Way, A Professional Development Opportunity. Leading the way pairs ten senior-level professionals (15+ years of experience) with ten younger designers (3-8 years of experience) for one year. Mentees must be IIDA members currently employed at a design firm and active within the design community. Pairs meet once a month on their own and the entire group of mentees and mentors gathers four times per year, performing community service and attending speaking events.

PROGRAM GOALS: • Develop an exclusive and meaningful program for IIDA members • Foster career development, growth and learning • Transfer knowledge between like-minded professionals • Build future industry leaders • Exposure of our profession to the community • Grow the IIDA Mid America Chapter

Now in it’s second year, this program is gaining great momentum and continues to grow. The group started 2014 by completing the StrengthFinders assessment together to look at individual strengths and how to grow and build on them within a firm. This summer applications will go out for a new group of mentees. We know the relationships that are built in this program will go on long past their year commitment.

“My mentor inspired me to take a greater role within my community and offered advice ranging from products to professionalism. As the single designer in my office, this kind of contact and brainstorming was something I greatly desired and needed.” -MEGAN RYKEN, IIDA

SPONSORSHIP ANNUAL PROGRAM

As our Chapter grows we are blessed to have generous manufacturers, representatives, dealers and firms that partner with the Chapter financially each year. To kick off our annual Chapter Sponsorship program, we host a breakfast in the fall to offer a menu of options, answer questions and update industry members on changes and goals.

OUR 2014 CHAPTER SPONSORS PLATINUM

Our VP of Industry Relations, Leslie Huckla, does a great job coordinating this program each year and making it as easy-to-use and valuable to our partners as possible. Sponsors are able to determine a level of commitment and select from a number of a la carte options as benefits. We can truly say the programs our Chapter puts on would not be possible without our Chapter Sponsors. The continued growth in this sponsorship program has allowed us to work on new programs, provide added value to members and find new ways to be a better resource for our industry. ADMINISTRATION CHANGES

The beginning of 2014 kicked off an exciting change for the Mid America Chapter with some changes in our administrative processes. In the past few years we’ve come to the realization that the clerical elements of some of our board positions were getting overwhelming. Many of the rolls had changed from asking volunteers to find innovative and creative ways to grow our Chapter to ‘check these items off the to-do list’. With one of our primary goals to get more involvement from firm leaders, principals and experienced designers we worried that some of these tasks could scare them away. When our local AIA Kansas City staff approached us about hiring them for management services, we saw it as an opportunity to become more organized and consistent for our members, allow our volunteers to spend their time on what’s important and strengthen our relationship with AIA. The team at AIA now assists with our accounting/banking and communications, sending out regular emails and updating the website. In hiring AIA’s management services we’ve also found a physical home for our Chapter, providing a consistent place to meet each month, a permanent home address, a place to host events and a valuable shared storage closet. In the last year AIA Kansas City has worked on transitioning their home office to the Center for Architecture and Design. Our Chapter President and President-Elect have been invited to the conversation as they determine how this Center could benefit the entire design community. We’re proud that “International Interior Design Association Mid America Chapter” is now featured on the front door of the Center for Architecture & Design in Kansas City. Each year we’ll reevaluate this administrative decision to make sure it’s best for the Chapter, for now we feel like we’ve made a really positive change for IIDA Mid America.

I love how IIDA brings us together to strengthen us as individuals, as a group and as a key, integral part of the Kansas City design community. We continue to elevate our chapter each year! -TRACY TAPP, Assoc. IIDA

2014 MID AMERICA CHAPTER RETREAT AGENDA Saturday, January 18th

On January 18th, 2014 our Chapter Board and both City Center Committees joined together for a weekend in Wichita. While our Chapter retreats have typically been just the board we loved the idea of bringing together all of our volunteers to connect. With so many new volunteers we spent some time going over the IIDA ‘basics’ before diving into group discussions and then small group break-out sessions. We grabbed a glass of wine while touring a local firm, GLMV Architecture, before heading to dinner. it was a great weekend for our Chapter to learn and bond.

PROGRAMS & FORUM EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES Between April 2013 and April 2014, IIDA Mid America hosted 25 events. Like many Chapters, we constantly work to find a balance of the right kind of events to bring value to our members and our industry. Providing something for every member, from the student just graduating to the principal with 21 years of experience is something we strive for.

The planning and preparation changes for each event. For our largest events, MADA, Color+Couture and both charity 5ks, committees (usually 8-10 people) begin meeting up to six months in advance. Programs chairs on both City Centers work year-round to provide a range of CEUs and tours while Campus chairs coordinate student events.

EVENT TYPE: + Social/Networking : 9 + Educational/CEUs : 8 + Tours : 3 + Community Benefit : 3 + Student Events : 2

Our members continually give us feedback on the events they’d like to see. In the coming year we’re working on developing unique CEUs to help designers in and outside the workplace. Our members don’t necessarily need another CEU on wood veneer. Information on financial planning, work/life balance and health could help them be happier designers and members of the community.

GET INVOLVED WITH IIDA! HAPPY HOUR

360 Architecture, Kansas City MO After an amazing number of “how can I get involved?” emails came through we decided to hold a happy hour with current Board and City Center members and invite anyone interested in IIDA. This happened to land perfectly a few months before the new City Center and Board turned over in July. We had a great turn out and recruited new Board members, City Center committee members and event volunteers. We even managed to re-recruit a couple of great volunteers to take on new positions. Handouts provided brief responsibility descriptions and a signup sheet gave us ways to follow up with each person. We have more volunteers involved right now than ever and we’re excited to say those “how can I get involved?” emails just keep coming!

4.11- 4.14.13 MAKEOVER

Youth Horizons The IIDA Wichita City Center undertook an extreme interior makeover for Youth Horizons, a not-for-profit organization in the local community. Youth Horizons exists to empower children and their families to become healthy and productive members of the community. They achieve this through their mentoring program. Children ages 5-14 are paired with a positive adult rolemodel who meets with them 2-3 hours per week for a year or more. During this time, the children engage in fun and life-building skills.

after

With the success of the Youth Horizon’s Mentor Program more and more youth are enrolling. Unfortunately, there are not enough mentors to provide a match for each child, leaving many in a “waiting-list” state. IIDA renovated a current multipurpose room into a game room. This space now provides a fun and safe place for interaction between the youth and various mentors. It also functions as a place for paired youth to enjoy time with their specific mentor. This event has grown from previous years in all aspects including sponsorship, donations, construction help and volunteers, and number of unveiling ceremony attendees. The makeover event has really taken off and provided Youth Horizons with an amazing new space to share with their tenants and the community. Participation included IIDA members, students, and the public. The construction was done over a long weekend by members and a few local construction workers. People came and went in shifts as designers demoed, constructed, painted, installed carpet and furnished the space. Local design students stopped by when they had a break between classes and work and picked up a paintbrush for a few hours. Everyone donated their personal time and materials to help out with the makeover. The makeover was valued at almost $23,000 and this is the only event in Wichita that is done by Interior Designers for a not-for-profit 501C3 organization. Participants enjoyed helping out in the local community and are proud of what they accomplished. The Youth Horizons makeover was huge success! The Wichita City Center strives to maintain and go beyond that level of expectation in future years. They’ve decided to limit the event to every other year to focus and organize their thoughts on creating something bigger and better in the years to come.

The IIDA Extreme Home Makeover 2013 at Youth Horizons has been a huge success. The project transformed a drab, colorless space that was essentially used for storage into a vibrant, exciting game room. We think of the IIDA Chapter often and recommend their work at every opportunity. -AMY MAXTON, YOUTH HORIZONS

IIDA 5K ACTIVE FOR ART

English Landing Park, Kansas City Three years ago the Kansas City City Center hosted their first charity 5k. They wanted to create an event that could benefit something bigger while creating an opportunity for our design community to gather together with their families for a healthy day of fun. Each year a new charity is selected to support and the choice for 2013 was a new charter school focused around the arts, The Academy for Integrated Arts. We loved the idea of encouraging children to learn through art from a young age. Over 100 runners gathered with volunteers and families of the school’s students to run through a local park. The race was kicked off by a team of student’s doing one of their morning cheers. After the race the crowd stuck around for a children’s race, a pancake breakfast and an arts & crafts activity. One of the unexpected outcomes of these races are the cult-following our uber-soft race t-shirts have developed! It’s great to see them throughout the year around the community with IIDA big and bold across the front. 100% of the race proceeds are given to the charity each year and this year we were able to give $2,000 to The Academy for Integrated Arts. Our committee of volunteers is already underway planning 2014.

The sessions are located in Kansas City, however a video/phone conference is available for our Wichita City center to participate. The study sessions are free for IIDA members and $50 for non-members. Some of the exciting hands-on demonstrations include an informational walk around a local flooring show room, samples of different stages of carpet production and an electrical engineer presenting how lighting can affect the space. New to the study sessions this spring is a previous code reviewer’s presentation on various aspects of the building code and barrier free design which the participants will need to know for the exam. We have received positive feedback and the participants love the hands on applications.

Beth Luedke, LEEP AP and Trendway Corporation Sales Representative, Western Region, presented information about architectural building products and their environmental benefits through case studies. After the presentation, attendees could immediately apply what they learned to determine major functions and components of a green interior as well as specify interior building products for maximum LEED points.

IIDA DESIGN WARS

encompas, Kansas City MO The Mid-America Chapter held their 1st Annual Student Award competition “Design Wars” at encompas, the local Haworth dealership. Design Wars is a design charrette where each student team had to come up with a creative design for an existing interior space in downtown Kansas City. They were provided a program for an imaginary new office for IIDA in Kansas City. Each team, comprised of students from different schools, had 3 hours to complete a floor plan, provide finish selections and put together a presentation. The group then pitched their concept to a panel of prominent industry leaders. The panel selected one team to win the $2,000.00 Mid America student award. All IIDA members were invited to come and support the students with advice and insight before the winning team was announced. The event was open to sophomore, junior and senior interior design students currently enrolled in an interior design degree program at the university level.

Through IIDA I’ve been able to start interacting with professionals in Kansas City and truly learn the ins and outs of my amazing profession, even before graduation. -BRANDI WOOTON, Student IIDA

COLOR+COUTURE

Starlight Theatre, Kansas City Our Kansas City City Center’s largest event of the year, COLOR+COUTURE celebrated it’s eighth year in 2013. Design firms from both Kansas City and Wichita and regional schools form teams and are paired with a product manufacturer. Teams use products - in every deconstructed, woven, stitched and shredded way imaginable - to create couture garments. Designers from 24 teams strut the runway in front of a crowd of more than 700 attendees. COLOR+COUTURE is also our Chapter’s largest fundraiser and VIP tickets typically sell out in a few days. We love that the community outside our design industry has taken notice and the features in many local publications are a wonderful opportunity to share more about the organization. To keep the event fresh we’ve changed venues, added VIP host/sponsor parties and added a few twists in the challenges to the design teams. The COLOR+COUTURE excitement keeps growing and the team is already underway planning for 2014.

Color + Couture is a great opportunity to express creativity, learn the ins-andouts of a new product and bond with co-workers. -DENISE BLISS, Assoc. IIDA

Lidias Kansas City, MO For the second year in a row, IIDA Mid America hosted an annual meeting at one of Kansas City’s favorite restaurants. While we’d like to think 75 of our members are showing up for the Chapter updates and pasta, we know the truth is that everyone loves to hear from Cheryl. Both years Cheryl Durst has joined us and given a small talk on IIDA around the world, from trends she’s seeing in the industry to changes she sees coming, it’s a great opportunity for our members to realize we’re part of something more. This event is free for members and they’ve always left with a little IIDA swag as an early holiday gift.

CEU - LOCK IT DOWN, A SPECIFICATION STORY Wichita, KS

Twenty-two designers attended “Lock it Down – a Specification Story.” This CEU course educated interior design specialists how to lock their specifications by clearly identifying the features and benefits of a product. Attendees learned the specifics of what to write into a specification to keep it from being converted. The emphasis is on the materials used to build a product; how the product should go together (built of quality) and how it must meet industry safety standards and sustainability practices along with providing the right function and design aesthetics. Presenter Jay Eubanks (Former Professional Athlete) currently serves as Director of Training for Jasper Group Brands JSI and Community furniture. He is a certified trainer for BIFMA’s (E3 Sustainability and Level) course and has also held head training roles for multiple national manufacturers (Paoli Inc., Jasper Group) in the midmarket contract furniture industry. 28 |

On December 13th 2013, IIDA along with AIA, ASHRAE, ASLA, SMPS and USGBC threw their first annual Holiday Networking Event. They ate, drank and got tacky for charity as they crawled along the Douglas Design District. The Design Crawl started at BCS, an engineering consultant firm, where the groups collected unwrapped toys or a $5 donation for Interfaith Ministries which provides critical services to individuals and families struggling with hunger, homelessness and poverty. After leaving BCS the group moved to GLMV Architecture, then on to the Workroom, an interior design practice, and finally ended at Ferguson Kitchen and Lighting. Each location had their own signature drink, raffle items and snacks and the event was a great way to network between organizations. The event was a huge success with 77 attendants, $220 in donations, and 25 toys taken to Interfaith Ministries to be donated to kids in need.

PORTFOLIOS & PROFESSIONALS

360 Architecture, Kansas City IIDA Mid-America Chapter held our 2nd annual Portfolios + Professionals in February which brought together area universities and schools with professionals in the Kansas City area. More than 80 students attended, with their portfolios, projects, and works in progress for an opportunity to meet design professionals and gain feedback on their portfolios. Professionals were there to give valuable critiques and advice. In conjunction with the Portfolio review, a competition was held for Best Portfolio, Best-In-Progress Portfolio, and a raffle for a free student membership. The Best Portfolio winner was given a day of job shadowing with a local KC designer, and the Best In-Progress won a one-on-one session with a graphic designer to work on their portfolio. Following the portfolio review, a panel discussion with a range of design professionals discussed the ins and outs of networking, how they came to be where they are as a professional and answered questions the students had about a particular field or design work in general.

I joined IIDA as a student member because it seemed like a great way to get involved with KC’s awesome design community. I am excited to be a part of this chapter! -KALI FOSTER, Student IIDA 30 |

KANSAS CITY DESIGN WEEK Kansas City MO

Kansas City Design Week was started four years ago under the partnership of AIA Kansas City and AIGA Kansas City. Other organizations became involved and in 2013 IIDA jumped in. When planning began for 2014 our Chapter really felt we needed to up our involvement and became a Level 1 supporter with AIA and AIGA. Alissa Wehmueller, our Chapter President served as an event CoChair. KCDW’s goal is to create a week of inspiring and educational events for designers from all disciplines and to share the design community with Kansas City. This year’s ten events included speakers, live design competitions, student panels and design awards. Our Chapter organized a speaking event featuring Lawrence Abrahamson of IDEO on Building Creative Confidence. The event took place in a recently completed, innovative business school at the University of Missouri Kansas City and was the perfect opportunity to showcase amazing design while learning about creative thinking. Being involved with KCDW has been an amazing opportunity for our Chapter to collaborate with other organizations in the design community and expose our members to new events. Participation in KCDW is free for IIDA Mid America, the week of events is supported by sponsorship and ticket sales. You can learn more about KCDW at kcdesignweek.org.

IIDA has not only allowed me to get connected with other design professionals in the metro area but also with other organizations and professionals in our community. I feel so plugged in. -ASHLI DUHAMEL, Assoc. IIDA IIDA Mid America Chapter

John A Marshall Co., Wichita The Wichita Herman Miller dealership, John A Marshall, graciously hosted the “Authentically Green Interiors: Optimizing Nature’s Design” CEU. Gary Loop with Green Plants for Green Buildings presented a study of interior landscape’s impact on Human-Centered Sustainable Design. His presentation included the most relevant and compelling findings on the environmental impact of plants on people’s physical, psychological and behavioral needs within the built environment. Participants learned ways to quantify the environmental contributions of plants to a building interior and gained practical insight into the bottom-line and human-centered benefits to designing with interior plants.

MEMBERSHIP MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS In the past few years the IIDA Mid America Chapter has gone through some significant changes. In 2012 one of our City Centers, St.Louis, became the Gateway Chapter. While this meant losing a portion of our members, we saw it as a great opportunity to start a new chapter for our Chapter (see what we did there?) In the last year we’ve seen a wonderful growth in the bond between Wichita and Kansas CIty. Our ability to share ideas for events, ask advice and celebrate together at Chapter events only builds excitement and a feeling of a holistic Chapter.

This cohesive feel has extended to our external communications through a redesign of our website, emails and newsletters. There is a great energy in the Mid America Chapter right now and that extends throughout our membership process - from marketing to new members, welcoming those that join and then continuing the conversation with members throughout the year.

“I recently moved to Kansas City and joining the IIDA Mid America Chapter was my first step to explore the design community. This Chapter quickly welcomed my participation and provided numerous opportunities to network” -LAURA VANBIBER, Industry IIDA

Want to join IIDA Mid America? Each Fall, as IIDA Headquarters kicks off their marketing campaign for the following year, our City Centers start planning their annual Membership Drive events. In Kansas City, the Tacky Holiday Trivia Night welcomed more than 60 people for an evening of trivia and drinks. Intermixed with traditional trivia material were questions on the history of IIDA and the Mid America Chapter. Wichita hosted a similar Jeopardy lunch at GLMV Architecture. In both events, the winning individual or team won a free IIDA membership (in the team setting the prize could be used for one person or split and applied to any new members). These events are a great way to get in front of the design community at the end of the year and remind them to renew for the following year - and encourage new members to apply! We have had an amazing amount of designers and industry members step forward in the last year and ask that wonderful question, “how can I help?” There were so many of these questions, in fact, that Kansas City hosted a “So you want to get involved with IIDA” happy hour. This event provided an opportunity for prospective volunteers to talk with the current board and committee members, find out more about the available positions and responsibilities and sign up. We feel lucky to say we never have a lack of volunteers!

Welcome to the Chapter! To welcome new members, our VP of Membership, Sarah Godfrey, initiated a “New Member Coffee” event once a month. Once Sarah receives an updated list from HQ, she’ll send an invite out to all new members to sit down at a local coffee shop together. This provides an opportunity for new members to meet a board member, network with other members and learn more about the Mid America Chapter. We’ve found it’s the perfect time to answer questions, fill them in on upcoming events and find out if there’s something they’d like to help with in the Chapter. We also provide a little Mid America swag with a new IIDA notebook. The most important thing about this coffee? It’s opens the dialogue between a new member and our board so they feel they always have a familiar face at events and someone to contact with questions. IIDA Mid America Chapter

Let’s chat. For a Chapter to keep buzzing, it’s all about the communication. The Mid America Chapter promotes all of its events through a Chapter website, email newsletters and social networking sites. In 2012, the board went through a year-long effort to completely rebuild the website and design coordinating email templates for a clear, consistent message to members and the design community.

Our new website is user friendly and easy to navigate while showing off the work of our Members. The homepage is a rotating series of projects that were winners at the Mid America Design Awards (MADA). Platinum Chapter sponsors are featured at the bottom of the screen and our keywords, “Participate. Support. Benefit” are highlighted.

Visitors to the site can use menus on the left side or click on colored tiles over the feature image to visit pages on Membership, Sponsorship, Events, Photo Galleries and Resources. Click on ‘Our Chapter’ and you’ll see the smiling faces of our board members along with a letter from the President and both City Center Directors.

A clear calendar layout shows what’s going on in coming months. Click on an event and you’re able to find information and access to ticket sales. Want to see more of our fabulous website? Check out iidamidamerica.org. IIDA Mid America Chapter

You’ve got mail. As with most Chapters, we struggle with a mix of feedback on emails. We hear equal parts:

1. I get way too many emails from IIDA, I never read them anymore 2. I didn’t get that email! In an effort to streamline and organize, our VP of Communications, Kim Crane, started sending Chapter emails every Tuesday afternoon. Members can expect an email once a week highlighting the next three or four upcoming events as well as information relevant to the Chapter at that time (what’s happening with the Missouri Coalition? How’d the Chapter Retreat go?) The email also highlights past events, links to photo galleries and thanks participants. The bottom of each email features a highlighted Chapter Sponsor and a list of all Chapter Sponsors including links to company homepages. While we know we’ll never find the perfect balance of too many/not enough emails, members have shared that they like knowing exactly when they can expect the email and what to look for.

EXCELLENCE IN GRAPHICS We’re lucky to have wonderfully creative Communication Chairs in both City Centers that create beautiful, energetic graphic identities for our events. It’s important to create a consistent brand that can be translated to a variety of products and mediums year after year, especially for our larger events. The Color+Couture graphics change each year to reflect the event, however the logo stays the same (in font and proportion) from year to year. This consistent message gets our members attention and keeps them coming back.

We’ve embraced IIDA’s new Chapter branding and celebrated the unity it’s brought graphically to the organization. We’ve fully implemented our logo in all graphics, websites and printed materials. In addition to event specific graphics we’ve had IIDA Mid America notebooks and specialty mugs created as member gifts featuring the new logo. We love to see members around the community proudly carrying their IIDA swag.

IIDA SUPERHERO 5K

Sedgwick County Park, Wichita The Wichita City Center’s 5k committee included a graphic designer that was in on the planning process from the beginning. Our first task was to develop a timeless logo that we could carry throughout the hopefully many years to come for consistency and brand recognition of the event. Our IIDA Superhero 5K logo was inspired by the vintage Wonder Woman and Superman’s logos, melding the two into one new logo with plans to tweak both logo and shirt colors throughout the later years of the race.

The concept for “Everyday Heros” lent itself well to supporting our cause, Rainbows United, which enhances the lives of children with special needs. They are the true heroes as they battle disabilities and struggles throughout their everyday life. The last .1 miles of the race had Everyday Hero signs to help guide participants to the finish line and to give inspiration and perspective to each runner and they passed by.

Sticking with the Superhero theme, the 5K poster was designed to mimic a comic book cover complete with a city skyline and Superhero. This was used both as a digital poster and for our 5k Facebook page and eblasts, as well as printed posters hung in gyms, running clubs, yoga studios, etc. throughout the city of Wichita and surrounding small towns. Wichita has a large running community and the number of races in the city is astronomical, the committee knew that a fun theme and consistent graphics were the way to catch the wandering eyes of runners making a decision on their race calendar for the year.

Staying true to the Superman color palette, shirts for volunteers and for runners were designed using bright red, yellow and royal blue. Volunteers were distinguished with a red shirt while each race participant received a complimentary blue shirt with their registration fee.

MID AMERICA DESIGN AWARDS (MADA) The Gallery Event Space

The graphic concept for MADA was based on the idea formulating the progressive design in our industry into a visual icon of the ‘futuristic city’ graphic. The cityscape is built with simplistic forms to read as abstract, not representing either of our two City Centers. The futuristic city was a way to give homage to creative design and the built environment which is what the MADA awards themselves ultimately represent. The cityscape concept has since been used for each MADA with a new color scheme.

COLOR+COUTURE

Starlight Theatre, Kansas City The theme for Color + Couture 2013, “Out of the Box”, stemmed directly from the event concept in which designers were teamed with reps who filled a box with finishes that designers were required to use. This concept was different from previous years because it gave designers further constraints beyond using any materials and rep could provide. The event graphics were inspired by the geometry of a box, repeated with bold colors to provide a bold backdrop for the event. The geometric graphic was then translated onto posters, flyers, tickets, judging cards, and event trophies. The Color + Couture committee even wore scarves and headpieces, provided by the host sponsor, which mimicked the geometry of the graphics. The goal was to saturate the event with the bold graphics, immersing the attendees into the “out of the box” concept. Additionally, the Color + Couture Facebook page has become and extremely integral part of the yearly event. With over 850 page “likes”, it acts as a platform for anyone interested in event information and updates. Creating graphics that coordinated with the Facebook page became just as important as traditional posters and fliers. A Pinterest page was also created for first-time and returning attendees to get outfit inspiration and event information.

CHAPTER ADVOCACY & GRA ACTIVITIES At our MADA Awards event in April 2013, our emcee Cheryl Durst said “What you do is important” and we truly agree. While our Chapter does a great job creating social and educational events, our focus is our members and the work they do. Interior designers have a constant struggle to prove their worth and value - to the public, to their clients and to the other professionals they work with. We strive to be a supportive resource for them, helping them to grow as designers while sharing the message of what interior designers do throughout the community.

By being advocates for our profession, for our industry and for the communities we live in, we’re telling people who interior designers are and what we’re capable of. We’re energized by this profession, by its challenges and its successes and we’re committed to working with our members to show that what we do is important.

Advocates for our profession. As the Mid America Chapter spreads over two states, Kansas and Missouri, we have two very different situations for interior design legislation. Currently, the state of Kansas does not have any legislation in place and there is not an effort to begin this process. Missouri, however, has a title act in place to allow designers to become a Missouri Registered Interior Designer. This act was put in place in 1998. The last few years saw a shift in the organization of IIDA Mid America as the St. Louis City Center formed the new Gateway Chapter. Instead of seeing this as a loss, IIDA Mid America took advantage of having an additional VP of GRA representing the State of Missouri.

Megan Ryken of Mid America and Ann Young of Gateway began collaboration on Missouri’s first Advocacy Day in August after the initial idea was proposed by previous VP of GRA, Julie Sayers. The date was set for April 15th, 2014, Ann and Megan set to work gathering information and ideas for planning the day. Thanks to support from other chapters , a plan and packet was developed that included a schedule, talking points and an overview of current bills that our lobbyist, Kyna Iman was tracking for us. It took a considerable amount of coordination since the two chapters planned to travel by Amtrak and everyone, including our Coalition, shared the day’s expenses. Cooperation was a key element and because we managed to plan and budget correctly, we will be able to have two very special guests, Emily Kluczynski and Mike Stinzano, join us for the event. Through this experience, the bond between IIDA Mid America, Gateway and our Missouri Coalition for Interior Design strengthened. The train ride to Jefferson City symbolically uniting each side of the state in a common goal to recognize our profession.

Advocates for our industry. One of our Chapter President, Alissa’s, goals for the last year was to increase our collaboration with fellow design organizations. We’ve made a serious effort to work on this in both City Centers and have seen great results. As our members work with these professionals every day it’s important that we build a relationship in and out of the office. For the second year in a row, Kansas City participated in planning Kansas City Design Week alongside AIA, AIGA, PGSLA, IDSA and more. Committee members from all organizations met regularly to coordinate a week of ten events celebrating design in Kansas City and inspiring designers of all kinds. We challenged KCDW to think about how design can be shared outside the design community and we hosted IDEO’s Lawrence Abrahamson to give a presentation on creative thinking to more than 200 people. In attendance were designers and architects but more importantly members of our local business community, getting the chance to learn about design thinking. KCDW presentations included:

In the last year AIA Kansas City has worked on transitioning their home office to the Center for Architecture and Design. Our Chapter President and President-Elect have been invited to the conversation as they determine how this Center could benefit the entire design community. We’re proud that “International Interior Design Association Mid America Chapter” is now featured on the front door. Events are being developed in late 2014 with the Center for Architecture and Design to promote this cross-disciplinary resource and home for design in Kansas City.

“The IIDA Mid America chapter is incredibly successful at bringing its members together and creating great synergy and collaboration among designers in the profession. ” -JACOB LITTRELL, AIA Wichita held a new networking event in December in collaboration with AIA, ASHRAE, ASLA, SMPS and USGBC. Clad in tacky holiday sweaters, the group of 77 visited an engineering firm, architecture firm, interior design practice and ended at a kitchen and lighting showroom. They gathered toys for Interfaith Ministries while enjoying signature drinks and raffle items at each location. It was a great opportunity for the Wichita design community to get to know one another and are already planning their next event together.

Advocates for our community. In the last few years IIDA Mid America has made great strides in giving back to our communities. Our generous members are always looking for ways the Chapter can help support others. In Wichita, the new Superhero 5k chose to support Rainbows United. Rainbows United “enhances the lives of children with special needs and their families by bringing together community resources and providing customized services.” This home grown and locally recognized organization provides therapies, development classes along with many other services. The Wichita City Center’s Superhero 5k raised $2,000 to support United Rainbows. Kansas City’s charity 5k has selected a new charity to work with each year. In 2013 the race supported the new Academy for Integrated Arts, a charter school serving students in Kansas City using art as a strong part of their curriculum. “Using an arts centered approach with rigorous academic curriculum holds much potential for the classroom because of the power of art to engage students.” We loved that this school was teaching creativity at a young age and providing students a better education. The IIDA5k was able to give $2,000 to AFIA and raise awareness of this new school in the community. One of Wichita’s largest events each year is the Makeover event. IIDA Volunteers select a local organization that could use some assistance in their space. The 2013 choice was Youth Horizons, an organization with a wonderful mentor program pairing children with individuals in the community to provide a positive role model for youth who come from non-traditional homes. Youth Horizons asked IIDA to help them turn an unused room into a game room where mentors could meet with more kids, have a welcoming place to play games or read and converse in a safe, happy place. The Makeover was a success, providing Youth Horizons with a functional, positive space, showing the impact real design can have.

“Saturday was one of the greatest days I’ve ever had...it’s days like those that keep us positive and even more determined to fight. Julie, I can’t thank you and the rest of your committee enough for how generous you have been with your time and spirit.” -MARK SACCARO
