IIDA TXOK SAN ANTONIO CITY CENTER April 2019
Spring is an exciting part of the year for the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter. As many city centers are planning, and holding, their annual events, our chapter is simultaneously uniteing our student, industry and professional members in order to provide professional development opportunity and exposure to their future design community. Two years ago, the Texas Oklahoma Chapter began the transition of relocating (and rebranding) IIDA Student Conference from Houston and SHIFTing it to Dallas in order to, hopefully, become more accessible to our student members. The event has grown significantly the past five years, as we have worked to expand our reach to students outside our chapter. This year’s event, in February, saw us max out on attendance for the second year in a row! Students from the San Antonio campus centers were exposed to more than 300 professionals, along with 200 design students, from 16 states and 38 design programs, during the three-day event. However, it wasn’t just students coming together for this event. Council members from various city centers came together to ensure the success of the event. The annual campus center round table was held for an intimate discussion between IIDA headquarters, city center student liaisons, campus center leaders, myself and we look forward to continue assisting our campus centers in their individual, and collective, needs. Next year will be 20 years of IIDA SHIFT and we’re excited to meet what new talent will soon be entering our community. - Shannon Oliveira, IIDA TXOK - VP of Campus Centers
As my term as Past Director is coming to a close, I’ve been reflecting on everything that IIDA has done for me and my career path. I joined IIDA over 6 years ago in a way that I think so many of our members can relate… my coworker told me that I’d be a great volunteer and that if I became an involved IIDA member, our firm would pay for my membership. You get out of your membership what you put into it... For me, IIDA has become more than just CEU’s and happy hours… it has become my niche where I feel at home surrounded by those just as passionate as I am for making the built environment a better place for PEOPLE. There is a TON of planning and organizing that goes on behind the scenes of every event and this is accomplished almost entirely by unpaid VOLUNTEERS! It is truly amazing to reflect back on how much your San Antonio City Center has accomplished. But our work isn’t done yet! We need YOUR help! SHIFT 2019
Through an application process the IIDA San Antonio City Center was able to provide awards to five students to attend IIDA SHIFT this February! SACC was able to award three students from the Art Institute Students with the profit from the AI Product Sample Drive held this year!

Recent Event Recap San Pedro Creek Culture Park Tour IIDA San Antonio City Center members took part in a walking tour of the first phase of San Pedro Creek Culture Park on Wednesday, 3/20. Hosted by Javier Parades from Munoz & Co, this linear park, located in the historic heart of downtown San Antonio, is vital to safely conveying flood waters with low impact design features that are improving water quality and the natural habitat of the creek. San Pedro Creek Culture Park is recognized as a catalyst for economic development, Latino culture, art and nature in San Antonio. We began at the Plaza de Fundacion and concluded at Alameda Theatre. IIDA TX/OK CHAPTER LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
This year, all eight city centers in the IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter gathered in Oklahoma City to share the successes from the past year. All current IIDA members and their guests were invited to attend as the achievements of the City Centers, members, and the chapter and local level sponsors were acknowledged for their contribution to the organization throughout the year. The Annual Meeting took place during the annual Chapter Leadership Summit, which brought together members and leaders from all over Texas and Oklahoma for a two day session on leadership training, networking, and inspiration.
