In 1920, the first Fannie May® retail store opened in downtown Chicago. Founder H. Teller Archibald, a lifelong entrepreneur, had started out selling candy in Chicago grocery stores. He decided to take a chance by opening his own candy shop on North LaSalle Street.

A Rich Tradition Using only premium ingredients and keeping the shelves stocked with quality products was always important at Fannie May®. Our reputation as the purveyor of high quality gourmet chocolates soon spread, and by 1935 we had grown to nearly four dozen stores throughout the Midwest. During World War II, when ingredients were scarce, other companies chose to alter their recipes. But not Fannie May®. We continued to use the same ingredients we always did – even if it meant closing our shops early if we ran out of candy. Close to ninety years later, Fannie May® is still a trusted friend in gourmet chocolates and we still make our products with the same quality ingredients. Even though we’ve been in operation for decades, Fannie May® is a company constantly looking toward the future future, with an array of delicious new products being tested and added on a regular basis. To boost our appeal to loyal customers and attract new ones, we are continually exploring bold new products to enhance our lineup, such as chocolate dipping theaters for dried fruits, strawberries, ice cream bars and more. Flexible Store Options With a long history of retail experience behind us, we’ve found that a strip center, especially one anchored by a popular grocery store chain and other high traffic generators, is a great location for our stores. A typical strip center Fannie May® location requires 1,200 square feet of space, with at least 18 feet wide frontage. Franchisees may also opt to open within an enclosed mall environment, which will require between 400 - 800 square feet of space plus additional offsite storage in the mall property. Freestanding stores, which can offer great visibility, can be built up to 2000 square feet. No matter which site alternative you choose as a franchise owner, you’ll get guidance with approved building standards, designs and construction guidelines.

Locations have been designed with a warm, contemporary interior that features Fannie May’s signature red and white awning. The dark woods in our retail stores complement the red and white walls that highlight the inviting product presentations.
