will arrive in good order and will be back in time for the start of the 2009 season. At last: you will receive an invitation (via your nat. secretary) for the WC2009 in Medemblik, Holland. We are already looking forward to meeting a lot of sailors and expect it to be a happy and succesfull event. The organising committee of RYC Hollandia is highly respected in the regatta world, so is he wonderful venue at the IJsselmeer: the International Regatta Centre Medemblik. The NFDCO is expecting it to be a unforgettable experience.

Dr. Gizmo sent in an article in which he gives us his thoughts on an interesting development in FD- saildesign, we wonder what this is all about!

We hope you will enjoy this issue of the FDBulletin and wish you safe, fast and happy sailing! Warm regards,

With the WC in New- Zealand coming up in January we wish all the compeditors all the best and good sailing. Most of the European boats are on their long journey to Napier, we hope they

Interview with Norman Rydge - Rabac, 7 June 2008 Around five years ago a new Australian FD team started sailing in some of the European and World Championships. It was the AUS-37, crewed by Norman Rydge and Richard Scarr.Always a steady candidate for the top places, this year again team Rydge/Scarr did well, reaching a third place in Croatia. We decided to see where this successful helmsman Norman Rydge came from and what he had to say about the Flying Dutchman. (by Casper Schaaf) Norman, what does your pre-FD sailing career look like? I guess I started sailing when our family moved to an area in Sidney harbor, very close to a boatyard. I was I think about six or seven years old and the men who were working as shipwrights in the boatyard built me a little boat and I just started sailing that boat around the bay. I can remember I used to make the sails from our bed sheets and my mother wasn’t very happy about that. I can imagine. Yeah, it was very informal, just playing. Some of the other children that lived around the bay that we were in had little boats too and we used to swap boats and just play around with those things. I lived in that house until I was about twelve years old and I always wanted to sail a boat that was only sailed at a small sailing club in that area, called a Northbridge Junior, very much like a hard scale Scow/Moth. But for some reason my father wasn’t too keen that I should get into organized racing, although we were just playing with boats. Anyway, when I was about thirteen we moved to another part of Sidney, closer to the surf beaches. I didn’t do much sailing there, but got involved with surfing.

Wind surfing? No, just wave surfing. I wasn’t very keen on wind surfing until I was about seventeen. After that we started to get involved in wind surfing as well. Anyway, I can remember from this period a friend of mine bought a Laser. That was when the Laser was getting popular. There were lots of those in Sidney. And I remember going out with this Laser and thinking to myself, this is a really badly designed boat; you can’t keep your bottom out of the water. But anyway, we got involved in Laser racing and I started sailing my Laser, just like when I was a little kid, around the little bay where we lived. Generally beating other Laser I’d come across I thought I could go to the State Championship for Laser. I went there and had absolutely no idea why I was coming last. Well, you know, I’m now nineteen; hadn’t sailed since I was twelve years old and didn’t know competitive sailing as a teenager, just surfing. I thought I’d remember how to sail boats and I was always, every race, coming last. I had no idea why boats had compasses on them. Anyway, that was my first racing experience in sailboats. So you immediately started with these big races, or you had some club races? Well, until I got there I thought I was pretty good. But when I came last in that State Championship I realized there was more to it. I then did about ten years of sailing Lasers, gradually getting better, to a stage where I came overseas and sailed Lasers at Kiel Week. Got third in Kiel Week I think, one year. To see things in perspective, what age are you now? I’ll be fifty this year. I think I was at Kiel at about twenty three years old; I did one big European trip in Lasers. Generally got in the first four or five in most of the big regattas: the British Nationals and

so on. Anyway, when I came back I got involved in sailing 505 and I sailed those for many years. From the Eighties onwards? Yeah, from the mid-eighties actually. I think it was about 1986. Because I sailed a Taser championship in Sidney harbor in 1985. A Taser? Never heard of that. It’s a two-men boat, Sidney design. They had what’s still the biggest regatta in Sidney harbor with 238 boats. It’s a world wide class? No, it’s not. Mainly in North America and Australia. That’s why I’ve never heard of it, probably. It’s not in Europe? No, other than England it’s not very popular there. Anyway, every Laser sailor in Sidney had a Taser. So we won that regatta and graduated to the 505, which was the best dinghy going around in Sidney at the time. And then I started sailing FD’s because of a good friend of mine, Doug Harris, who people who’ve been in the FD class for some time will know. He was the man who made the Goldspar mast. He’s a very good friend of mine and he had an FD. Once a year I’d jump in the Flying Dutchman with Doug, because he owned the boat but liked to crew it. I’d skipper the boat for Doug and we generally came in second in the National championships, behind Ian McCrossin, who is another name people associated with the class will know. When was the first time you were in an FD? Well, the first big regatta that I can remember was an international regatta that we did in New Zealand, at a place called Taranga. I don’t remember the year, but the class was then Olympic I remember: the competition was very stiff. Ian McCrossin might have been about the best amateur at that time and he would get in the twenties or thirties in this fleet. It was quite an eye opener to go there. Of course, we didn’t do very well at all. That was the first time I sailed Flying Dutchman. But my main pursuit around that time was the 505. It wasn’t until maybe five or six years ago Dough decided that we needed a new boat – we were always sailing his old boat, it was a bit of a tractor. He loved the boat, but it was very rudimentary; it didn’t work very well and we didn’t maintain it very well. What brand of boat was it? It was a home-built one. So, Doug decided that we should build a new boat. We had some molds by a boat builder called Hasselgrove. Our boat was the last one that he built, because Doug basically sent this man mad during the construction. Dough designed the construction of the boat and I think it’s a very good boat; we still have it. It’s

the boat we use when the Mader is in a container somewhere. It’s certainly a very strong boat, but completely different to the Mader. Which is the quicker boat, I don’t really know. Richard and I prefer to sail the Mader, because everything works. However, we built this boat I’d say in the last few years before the World Championships in Melbourne – maybe two years before that - but just after building it Doug had a bit of a health problem. He had to have a heart operation. And that’s when I rang Richard and asked if he would like to sail with me, because Doug physically wasn’t able to sail. That was 2002, 2003? Melbourne was 2003. Yeah, it would have been the year before that I think, because I think the intention was to build this boat to sail in that regatta. Richard and I sailed that boat in Europe one year before that championship. That was when the European Championship where at Lake Como. Yes, that was in 2003. Yeah, that was when we constructed that boat. And ever since Richard and I have been sailing FD together. I suppose we keep sailing FD because we think it’s the queen of dinghy classes. You like the FD better than the 505? I do. I like the 505 as well. It’s a fantastic boat on a reach in fifteen knots in waves. The 505 is a very good sea boat, just like the Flying Dutchman. However, of the two I think the Flying Dutchman now is my choice. FD’s are much nicer to sail in lighter breezes; they act like a little keel yacht, where a 505 is a bit too bobby. And I think what’s important for – let’s say this regatta – they have a lot more room to relax when there’s no wind. Between races you can relax more in a Flying Dutchman than you can in a 505.Seriously though, one of the things that interest us in the FD class is the continual development. Having spent many years in Lasers, my approach to the 505 was – as most Laser sailors generally know – that you can use

equal equipment and have big differences in speed. So, if you spend many years in Lasers you don’t tend to be equipment focused. You tend to believe that the game has to be made by positioning on the course and just how you use the equipment. So, in 505’s I was never very interested in developing equipment. I’d just buy whatever everyone was using and go and try to practice with it and get better used to the equipment. One of the things I’m enjoying in the FD at the moment is learning more about masts and sails and how they might be improved. One of the reasons we’re here at this regatta is we were hoping to trial a new mast and sail combination. You have the CST mast now? Yes, we’re using the CST mast from Australia and Ullman sails. The reason we’re using these is, they’re not necessarily better than anything you can buy in Europe, but we have control over the way they’re constructed. You know, we tell CST what we want in the mast and they can build it. It feels better that you’re in control of your own stuff. That’s one of the things now that’s interesting more in sailing. I think sailing is a marvelous sport, because it comes to such a range of interests. One, it’s a lovely thing to do, just to get out on the water. But there’s also the tactics. Some people are more interested in the technical side of sailing, some people in the development of speed, with the rigs and spars. And of course you have the physical element. I can remember the first time I was sailing dinghies: I never thought you’d have to be fit to sail one of those. But there’s even a physical side now to sailing. You asked me my age before – fifty – you know, I’m starting to have to try to stay fit, for windy regattas. Luckily, that wasn’t tested here.

Yes and no. Result wise it’s pleasing. Quite frankly I don’t think a lot has changed in the pecking order here in Europe. The Bojsen-Mollers are still obviously the best, and Szabolcs and Andras. I’d say the faster boats are going faster than they were the last time we saw them – say, in Lake Balaton or St Petersburg – and I think there’s been a small increase in fleets. So, in this regatta, a third place is nice, but it feels as though somebody came out and dealt some cards and gave you a place. It’s been a difficult regatta for the race committee. I think they did a really good job; as good a job as they could do.The weather has conspired against them. But, even though the breeze has been wildly swinging, the better teams seem to get in front. Maybe the minor places could change. There’s one point between second, third, fourth and fifth: that’s a bit of a lottery. I couldn’t go home saying we’re definitely third in this boat, because with Borowski (4th) and Bogumil (5th) you could easily change positions.Anyway, if you have a look at the results, they’re pretty indicative of who’s sailing FD better than other people at the moment. And how are things in Australia, leading up to the Worlds in New Zealand? The situation in Australia is, FD-wise, I think a bit like Europe. The fleet is slowly graying. It’s a challenge to get people involved in dinghy sailing, especially young people. Anyway, there’s a small dedicated group of people who sail FD’s in Sidney, about ten boats. And, having come here and seen the rest of the fleet, I’d say the Sidney fleet is basically on the pace. There’s two or three boats in Sidney who are as quick as we are and Ian McCrossin has come back on speed recently. As for the Worlds in Napier, I think there will be about 10 Australian boats making the trip. Hopefully we can fill two containers. So we’ll see what we are worth out there next January.

No, this had a different testing element to it. But you did well here in Croatia, you’re third overall. I guess it’s pleasing, result wise?

European Championship – Rabac 30 May – 7 June 2008 By Robin Matulja (CRO-51) After 22 years, trust has been shown to Croatia, conceding to her the organization of one of the most important sailing events, the Open European Championship for the queen of all the classes – the legendary Flying Dutchman. The honor passed to the Fly Sailing Club, who together with the Labin/Rabac Tourist Board and the City of Labin carried out an excellent work. During the seven days of racing the Rabac Harbour has been transformed into a sailing center worth of all compliments. 85 boats from 16 nations have sailed in the Kvarner Bay and gave a wonderful and unique picture to everyone present. The Croatian representatives were Tin and Robin Matulja from the host club. Although nine races in the Olympic triangle course were planned, because of the cyclone and the very variable weather conditions that dominated Europe the whole week, only five have been sailed, but enough to acclaim the winners. Danish brothers Jorgen and Jacob Bojsen-Möller, after a not so good start on the first two days have dominated the event with three first places and took home the title of Open European champions. The second place went to the Hungarians Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos, and the Australians Norman Rydge and Richard Scarr went third. In the junior <26 category the winners are the Italians Nicola

The speech of the FD class president dr. Alberto Barenghi was full of compliments and congratulations to the organizers and to the sailors, and it was closed with the announcement of the upcoming Worlds in NZL and the 2008 Vintage Yachting Games in Holland.

Kieler Woche, 21 – 24 June 2008 Text: Kai Schäfers (NED-11) Translation: Casper Schaaf This year’s Kieler Woche had 25 boats at the start. Because of the Europeans in Croatia a few weeks before it was quite difficult to get the necessary entries for Kiel. On Saturday the races started punctually at 13:00 hours with a good 4 Bf. A long course was to be sailed. The first day we managed to do three races and were therefore quite tired when we came on shore in the evening. Bojsen-Moller had underlined his world class with three victories that day. The NED-32 with the van der Pol brothers was also in top form and was second in the results, followed by Hans Genthe and Olaf Ballerstein. In the first two races some teams were thrown back to the lower ranks because of an early start. The second day we started the fourth race with lighter wind, around 2 to 3 Bf. In that race there was a little change of leadership after a nice tack to the left during the final beat by Kilian König, who managed to keep his first position. Coming from the right, the DEN-21 secured a position as second and the NED-11 as third. Then came the most sensational race of this Kieler Woche. The fifth race started. After the second round the wind fell away and the whole fleet got nicely mixed. Despite loud protests the race wasn’t cancelled. After 15 minutes a light breeze came from the left side of the course with which the first five boats managed to cross the finish line. The following boats had to wait another 5 minutes to float into the area that had a little wind and afterwards reached the finish as well. During the time without wind some boats were given a 720° penalty by the otherwise laid-back jury, for unauthorized propulsion. And so, after the second day the DEN-21 took the first place, the NED-32 the second and the NED-11 the third. On the third day there was no sailing because the wind was too strong. In some of the gusts wind strengths of over 8 Bf were measured. Hans Genthe decided to use this wind to put on a little FD training program for the audience, at 7-8 Bf with spinnaker. Amazing how fast an FN can go. Too bad that after an hour his genoa roller broke, as well as his mast. After a long repair session and a new mast the GER-33 was ready for action the next day.

16

The fourth and last day saw some more exciting races! The weather report predicted a diminishing 3-4 Bf. Some teams looked forward to a few nice races on the last day and came to the racing area with light wind sails. But hardly had they rounded the harbor corner and reached open water when a stiff breeze from 280 degrees greeted them with 45 Bf. Some crews had sailed out with sails for more wind, which they could put to good use the first two races. Bojsen-Moller, among those to start with a light wind genoa, once more proved his sovereignty and was able to win the first race with stand-in crew Holger Jess. The second race proved to be quite interesting because of a 20 degree wind shift. The positions on the course were changed a number of times. With a lighter breeze from a stable direction of 290 degrees the third race could also commence at 13:00 hours. This allowed the desired second discard for some of the teams who’d started too early the first day. With that the final result after 8 races stood as follows: 1st place DEN-21, 2nd place NED-32 and 3rd place GER-33.

Spanish National Championship By Javier Higuera (ESP-9) Ginés Romero and Alvaro Moreno (ESP-6 from CN Altea) again won the FD Spanish Nationals by completing ten of the twelve scheduled races. The Championship was held at Altea’s Bay from 3rd to 6th July. On Thursday, the first of three races started at 15.00 and wind was dropping from B-4 to B-3/2. On Friday, the first race was won by Barenghi – Carp (ITA 7) with the wind shifting to South East. The second race was dominated by Martinez – Guijarro and the third race, with 7 knots wind, was for sailors of EVLE. Having completed a total of six races, provisional classification was as follows: Francisco Martinez - Vincente Guijarro (RCNT-CNA) 14 points; Ginés Romero - Alvaro Moreno (CN Altea) 15 points; Echevarria- Garciamartín (EV La Escandalosa) 16 points. Is more emotion possible?

On Saturday four races were disputed with a Southerly wind and a strenght of 10 to 12 knots: a beautiful (and hard) day of regatta sailing. The final day of the Championship gave no changes to the classification due to the absence of wind (never more than 4 knots). Thus, automatically, Ginés Romero and Alvaro Moreno retained the top position in the overall result with three points of advantage to Francisco Martinez and Vincente Guijarro, and four points to the third in classification, Carlos Beltri and Juan Pablo Diego from Murcia. The awards ceremony was held early in the afternoon with the presence of Ángel Roquero, a member of the Board of Directors of CN Altea, Alberto Barenghi, IFDCO President, Marino Gil and Vicens Cespedes as members of Race Committee.

Austrian Championship – Achensee 15 / 17 August 2008 (By Casper Schaaf, NED-5) Thursday 14-08 The ÖM for 2008 was hosted by the SCTWV, an old club on the Achensee (and home to the Olympic 470 ladies team Sylvia Vogl / Christina Flatscher who were 8th in Peking). The grounds used to belong to a monastery and so, not only is the club house still in original style, but the old chapel is still being used as well, as bar and barbecue spot nowadays. Unsurprisingly, the atmosphere was excellent. 34 boats on the entry list (15 AUT, 16 GER, 1 ITA, 1 NED and 2 POL), making it the biggest Austrian Championship since a long time. An indication of the positive development the Austrian FD fleet has shown in recent years. This year there were about four new teams, of which the AUT-31 looked most promising. Sailing a brand new Mader, helmsman Julius Trippolt (20 years) and crew Lukas Linhart (17 years) were here for their very first FD regatta, after dropping out of the Austrian 470 team. Furthermore, an older team was sailing in the POL7 (once famous as the Bojsen-Møller boat, then the Douglas Parker boat). They are new in the FD since this year’s Kieler Woche and although the helmsman confessed he’d sailed FD before, his last time was 26 years ago. Predicted favourites for Austrian Champion 2008: Kilian and Schappi König, Bernd Schreiber, Gerhard Ulrich, Christoph and Sylvia Aichholzer and (hopefully) Fred Schaaf.

Quite a few boats capsized as well, with the day prize going to the Greek-Australian team in the GER-1902 at three times. Fortunately, no serious damage anywhere. Conditions for racing get worse and after an attempted 4th race is cancelled we sail home in heavy rain. Tasty soup and cocktails more than make up for it though. Provisional result: 1) NED-5

2) AUT-382

3) AUT-31

Saturday 16-08 10:00 first race; again North wind with Bf. 3. With 10° C. dry suits and winter caps are no exception. The first race won by the surprise of this regatta, the AUT-31. The second race, after lunch, with South wind Bf. 2/3. As of this race we sail together with a small fleet of Ynglings, who have a smaller regatta during Saturday and Sunday. Finally a bit warmer! Sylvia Aichholzer wins 2nd race before her brother. Third race: still South Bf. 1/2, some sun too. Shortened by second top mark because of dying wind. GER-13 wins before, once more AUT-382. On shore, a good sailors’ dinner with free beer and more cocktails. Provisional result: 1) AUT-382

2) AUT-31

3) GER-13

Sunday 17-08 Friday 15-08 The first day of racing. 33 boats at the start, from 4 nations: Alberto Barenghi couldn’t make it. All boats had managed to get through the unexpectedly strict measurement and were ready for the first start around 14:00 hours. Heavy rain and wind in the morning and, even more unpleasant for the middle of August, ± 12° C. because the Achensee is located at almost 1 km altitude. Luckily, at 14:00 more favourable conditions with a 2/3 Bf. breeze from the North. We manage to win the first race, followed by Sylvia Aichholzer and Christoph Zingerle in the AUT-39. The second race won by last year’s champions Christoph Aichholzer and Philipp Zingerle in the AUT-382, with Gerhard Ulrich (AUT-15) and ourselves in pursuit. At the end of this race the wind picks up to a good 4 Bf. New team of AUT-31 shows quick adaptation skills by winning the third race they’ve ever sailed in an FD. Kilian König had some problems during the second and third race and the AUT-382 managed to lose a spinnaker pole along the way.

Julius Trippolt / Lukas Linhart through the finish line

For the first time no rain in the morning. Partly sunny, but no wind. At 11:00 a little wind picks up, allowing a Bf. 2 during the first race. Won by Schappi König (GER-13). The wind picks up a bit more to a good Bf. 3; once again won by König sr. GER-13 and AUT-382 are now really close in points, so the final race must decide the winner. Third race, still Bf. 3, this time won by Kilian König (GER-113). AUT-31 by this time had some lesser results and dropped off the stage. A good sailing day and in the end Aichholzer kept his head and his title. An elaborate prize giving follows, in which GER-13 receives 2nd prize and NED-5 3rd. As soon as all the boats were packed the rain came back as if it never went away and stayed the rest of the day. But it couldn’t prevent anyone from having had an excellent Austrian Championship. Enough wind for nine races, good food and drink at the end of each day and happy sailors when it was all over. Pictures by Kathrin Witting.

British National Championships - Lee on the Solent 29 – 31 August 2008 By Julian Bridges (GBR-380) The British FD fleet were invited to join the LOSSC centenary regatta over the last weekend of August, and enjoyed a three day regatta, on and off the water, with a good variety of conditions. The results belied the closeness of the racing, which saw Jon Williams and Alex Rogers again take the championships. Starting on Friday in light breeze with a strong tide, the first race was comfortably won by Peter Doran and Richard Phillips, from Tony Lyall, with the eventual winners finishing last after trying every flyer they could find. However, in similar conditions with slightly more wind the second race saw Strang and Alex recovering their style and winning convincingly. The day was completed with a class championship dinner in the club. Saturday’s racing, held in classic Solent conditions of 18-20 knots easterly winds over the tide was a very different matter with Strang and Alex dominating all three races. Mike Pickles, well known Javelin sailor, enjoying the grace and power of FD sailing for the first time, helming for Jamie Whitaker, took two of the seconds, before gear failure forced their retirement from the final race. Peter and Richard kept the event open with a third, fourth and second while the back markers enjoyed the exhilaration, terror and swimming of windy FD sailing. Sharing the course with the asymmetric B14s meant that competitors had to keep their eyes open, but far more spectacular and unusual was the hovercraft open day being held at HMS Daedalus which involved the fleet being buzzed by various machines providing joyrides, apparently without much directional control, so actually very similar to the B14s. The many competitors in the club regatta joined the visitors to celebrate the centenary with a splendid buffet supper, a live band, and Gordon’s free birthday beer all of which were provided on the Saturday evening by the club organisation led by FD crew Jim Harrop.

With two races scheduled for Sunday, the event was still theoretically open, but with flat calm and intermittent drizzle, prospects were not

good for any sailing at all. After a long postponement ashore, the fleet enjoyed the water frolics of the more excitable of the young people sailing B14s, during a long postponement afloat. Following another period ashore, both fleets rushed back onto the water with the onset of a bit of air. Steve Parry, RO for the weekend, got it exactly right, holding a race during the only 45 minutes of good breeze during the day. Strang and Alex led for the majority of the race to be caught right at the finish by Peter and Richard, with Jon Berry and Simon Anderson, also a newcomer to FD sailing, third. With the breeze fading to nothing again and a random flypast from a wartime Lancaster, that was it, both for the day and the championship.

Flying Dutchman Bulletin 155

Dr. Gizmo complains More than fifty years after its conception the Flying Dutchman still effortlessly holds on to its undisputed status of Lion King in the jungle of dinghy sailing. Surely, the FD’s sailing performance is indeed more than respectable. However, it is probably fair to say that the boat owes a substantial chunk of its enduring legacy to its sheer looks. Just marvel at that elegant scoop, culminating in the sturdy bow, radiating at the same time manly aggressiveness and female elegance: more classic than the Mondschein Sonata. Park the FD next to any one of those modern thirteen-in-a-dozen skiff-things and ask, pointing at your victim’s pitiful front side: “You call that a deck? ...Now that’s a deck” as you triumphantly turn to your FD and measure its foredeck with broad arm gestures. But, certainly, more than anything else, the Flying Dutchman’s secret shockand-awe weapon is its huge genoa. The overlap of this foresail extends two thirds of the way to the transom offering a silhouette that make the boat instantly recognizable from almost any distance. If any single detail stands out as a symbol of the FD’s masculinity, it must be its genoa. But what has happened? Two Dutch wimps, claiming to be FD sailors, have done the unthinkable. They have irreverently and willfully castrated the alpha-male, by replacing its proud genoa with a pansy, faggoty

handkerchief. One of the FD Bulletin’s own paparazzi was able to secretly photograph the result of these guys’ misguided tests. Just take a look at the picture below and shiver with sheer disgust. Why did they do it? Their utterly unconvincing defense is as follows: First: the guys claim that they are way too light for an FD: together they weigh in at a pitiful 140 kg. One wonders why they don’t buy a 470 or a 29-er to play with the other kids, but granted, with that crew weight an FD is probably overpowered at any wind speed over 8 knots or so. Second: they claim that the standard genoa has too much overlap to be efficient. Just look at the wings of glider planes and modern high tech sailing machines; it is high-aspect wings and rigging that seem to be the in-vogue-thing if you want performance and pointing ability. It is with the utmost reluctance that Gizmo has to admit that this argument is not entirely nonsensical. Thirdly: safety; the FD genoa is so big that it is all but impossible to spot any competing boat to leeward. Countless collisions have ensued from this total lack of visibility. The smaller sail allows a clear view behind the leech of the jib. What a bag of rubbish: if you can’t take the heat, stay away from the fire. No matter how reasonable some of the arguments for the small sail may seem, they do nothing to relieve the dismay of your narrator. It simply amounts to nothing but blasphemy. Luc-

kily, these poor twits have had little or no success with their new gadget. In races they are where they belong: at the back of the pack. But let they be warned: if, god forbid, they ever start winning with this sail, they better opt for personal protection. Early snapshots of the FD with the handkerchief hoisted.

3rd International Skiing Championship for FD-Sailors 2008

2 March 2008 Organized by the Austrian FD Class Organization Lammeralm / Langenwang Text: Heinz Waerder (AUT-9) Translation: Casper Schaaf The Skiing Championship for Flying Dutchman sailors on the 2nd of March 2008 was the only skiing event in the entire area that was finished that day. Because of the effects of hurricane Emma all organized skiing matches in the area had to be cancelled that Sunday. As a consequence, for example, all ski lifts from Stuhleck, Semmering and Präbichl were out of order. Although the first squall on Mount Lammeralm had already been very heavy that Saturday, there was no big damage. Later on, the squall was followed

30

by hail storms, transforming into snow storms. But, since the wind mainly came from a west to west-north-westerly direction, Mount Lammeralm was in a secure position, preventing the wind from blowing in full strength. Nevertheless, at the first gust of wind the power supply on the Lammeralm ski arena had already been interrupted by fallen trees. Since the power on the Lammeralm was still down on Sunday March 2nd, the chair lift was out of order, causing us to be thrown back on the diesel-operated drag lift. The power supply for the time registration was also down. But, because the staff of Ski arena Lammeralm had with exemplary conduct arranged an emergency power assembly from the fire department, the races could have a punctual start on Sunday, despite the circumstances. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions – on Sunday morning there was wet, fresh

snow on the run and rain from above – 70 of the 100 expected contestants came to the start. Without a problem the giant slalom on the FIS-race track - organized by ÖSV-trainer and race leader Sabine Lair – could be run by the FD sailors and the Prater Tennis club players (whose race was being held at the same time as the FD-race). The winner of the 3rd International Flying Dutchman skiing championship was Thomas Oswald, from Salzburger Yachtclub in 52,76 sec., followed by Kenneth Andersson (54,13) from Swedish sailing club Delfinen and crew of the Swedish champions FD team, and last year’s champion Wolfgang Sitzwohl (55,36) from Yachtclub Odysseas-Graz. Among the tennis players of the Prater-Tennis club Peter Krassel from KSV was the best, followed by Heinz Waerder from SV-SchwarzBlau and Herbert Hrdlicka from the Vienna Cricket Club. An interesting detail about this Peter Krassel is that he ended 4th in the Austrian giant slalom championships in the 1960’s, beating Karl Schranz – who in this race ended 7th - , in those days a sensation for a skiier from Austria. It seems that Peter Krassel (JG 42) hasn’t lost his skiing skills yet. The ski arena on Mount Lammeralm, both renowned as family skiing area and as training mountain for the Austrian Skiing Assocation (the Görgl sisters and Karin Blaser have trained here for their World Cup races!) had the preparations for the skiing run perfectly under control, even among such extreme weather conditions. And so, thanks to that, the conditions for all the races were good.

Flying Dutchman Bulletin 155

Obituary Hans Schelling Hans Schelling died on the 20th of may 2008 at the age of 53 on de consequences of a draining disease. Until the last moment he stayed optimistic and kept on sailing, his passion. When he realized sailing became more and more difficult to him, he was broken. Hans was a very talented sailor. He started to sail in a Dutch youth class at the Kagerplassen near his home town. As a young boy he had to cycle back and forth quite a distance to be able to sail. Later he bought himself a second hand FJ, refitted and modernized the boat and became a Dutch Champion and was also present in international events. After finishing his education as a physiotherapist he started his own practice and was able to put more money in his passion.

In 1982 he started racing in the Flying Dutchman in a B&C and he bought a new Mader in 1983. With his tactical insight as a talented helmsman, his length and weight he was an ideal crew and with his helmsman Henri Koning they became the leading Dutch team. In Holland the building of the KDV FD had started and Hans was very interested and involved in the further development of it. Hans wrote some articles about the trim of a FD in various wind strengths in the Dutch FD flyer to share his experience and knowledge with other Dutch sailors. Hans was a modest man and had no big talk, but was always willing to help his fellow sailors to become better. Ultimately he and Henri sailed several KDV’s and became elected to sail for Holland at The Olympics of Seoul in 1987. They retired as a team in 1989 shortly after becoming Dutch champions in 1988. But occasionally he crewed with me and was especially pleased about the bigger spinnaker. Still interested in the FD, Hans and Henri Koning took care of several training sessions for the Dutch FD class in early springs, After his FD career Hans started sailing in a typical Dutch class, the Falcon class, a class with a lot of experienced and competitive crews. In a short time he had a good speed and was in front of the fleet. I think a very few people knew ass much as he about hull

Obituary Thecla Gulcher van Styrum

Obituary Tom Clancy

It is with sadness that IFDCO reports the death of Thecla; second wife of Conrad Gulcher whose vision and inspiration led to the design and development of the FD Class.

It is with great sadness that the British FD Class reports the death of Tom Clancy following a heart attack whilst visiting the USA. Tom was a very loyal supporter of the FD Class. He kept his FD at Grafham Water and participated in numerous FD events in the UK and was always friendly and his sense of humour provided great entertainment at each event.

Thecla worked very hard for the FD Class travelling around the world supporting Conrad who was IFDCO General Secretary until 1988. After his death in 1989, Thecla continued to provide guidance and inspiration and was always very kind and considerate and keen to extol the virtues of the FD. Thecla awarded the prizes each year at the Conrad Gulcher Memorial regatta held at Loosdrecht the birth place of the FD. At the 50th Anniversary Regatta, Thecla was delighted that the FD Class was still alive and well.

Tribute from David Wilkins Tom and I first met in 1978 when Tom was looking to get an FD with the idea of doing an Olympic campaign. He soon realized what it took and he decided his best efforts would be to help us with ours. He took on the role of fundraising for our campaign as there was very little money available from Ireland. He raised the money that bought the new boat – IR5 that we went on to win a silver medal in. He also supported us through 1980 by acting as our support at most major events.

dimensions and mast sail combinations. A skill he made himself in his former classes the FJ and FD and still keeping contact and discussion with Johan Vels of KDV. Hans was a long time figurehead of the Falconclass and became several times Dutch champion. He made a short sidestep to the Finnclass but returned to the Falcon after the revealing of his disease, and also because he missed the sailing on a nice afternoon with his wife Els and daughter Femke. Hans will be missed greatly by his family, friends and all the sailors who have had the privilege to sail with and against him. May he rest in peace.

Rien van Paridon

He was with us in Tallinn for the Olympics – which he always said was one of the high spots for him. That was a bit of a battle with the ISA – but he had given us huge support and deserved to be there more than anyone in Ireland. He eventually inherited that boat, Glenfarne (named after his beloved home town in Ireland) from us in 1984. He continued to support the class from 1980 (when he sailed IR4) until very recently when his poor health restricted his sailing. I know he loved sailing the FD more than any other boat and enjoyed the company of all the British FD fleet. His dry sense of humour will be missed by all who knew him. We all send our condolences and best wishes to Teresa and his three daughters.
