freedom?

We are alone, without excuses. That is what I mean when I say that man is condemned to be free. There is no power of ‘beautiful passions’ which propel men to their actions, we think, rather, that man is responsible for his own passions. J.P. Sartre ‘Existentialism is Humanism’

freedom?

Freedom is a ‘nothing rather than a something, a possibility rather than an actuality’*. We are born into a structured society that has rules upon which we are entitled to act. We are always watched by our parents, our friends, our neighbours, google, facebook, mobile network providers, the society and ourselves. The freedom we have is the freedom we take. The freedom that comes when we understand our own needs and desires, when we learn how to choose what is best for us and not what the society wants us to choose, when we learn how to create our own freedom. To find our own freedom, first we have to find our real selves among all the social roles we take up. Whether the free will exists or not, is only up to us to decide. Yet in order to be able to freely choose what I want, I have to understand which part of me is my true self. *J.Macquarrie ‘Existentialism’
