Word from Founder

DEAN MULLANEY The Library of American Comics from IDW is the world's #1 publisher of classic newspaper comic strip collections and coffee table art books about the leading and most influential cartoonists of all time, with 21 Eisner and Harvey Award nominations and five wins for Best Book of the Year. Choose from our more than 100 books that will make you an instant expert in the history of comic strips. Top titles include Bloom County, Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, Tarzan, Flash Gordon, Superman, Terry and the Pirates, Secret Agent Corrigan, Polly and Her Pals, and more. The New York Journal of Books says, “The Library of American Comics [is] a reprint series that is becoming a national treasure,” and the New York Times reports that LOAC’s “distinguished roster of comic strips [recreates] the old-fashioned notion that Sunday is fun day.” Scoop sums up what readers and reviewers alike already know: “LOAC is the gold standard for archival comic strip reprints. The glorious reproduction of the material has preserved these strips for those who knew them and offers a new gateway to adventure for those discovering them for the first time." EuroComics, our newest imprint, brings the best European graphic novels to America, leading off with Corto Maltese, arguably the greatest graphic novel series of all time.

CORTO MALTESE: UNDER THE SIGN OF CAPRICORN This book, the first of 12 volumes, launches the definitive English-language edition of Hugo Pratt’s masterpiece, presented in the original oversized B&W format with new translations made from Pratt’s original Italian scripts. Long before the term “graphic novel” entered the popular lexicon—ten years before Will Eisner’s A Contract with God—Hugo Pratt pioneered the long-form “drawn literature” story. Corto Maltese set the standard for all adult adventure comics in Europe. By the mid-1970s, Corto was the continent’s most popular series and Hugo Pratt the world’s leading graphic novelist. Hugo Pratt’s peripatetic sailor was featured in a series of 29 stories. The adventures of this modern Ulysses are set during the first 30 years of the 20th Century in such exotic locales as Pratt’s native Venice, the steppes of Manchuria, the Caribbean islands, the Danakil deserts, the Amazon forests, and the waves of the Pacific. Corto Maltese: Under the Sign of Capricorn collects the first six interconnected short stories Pratt created in France in the early 1970s: “The Secret of Tristan Bantam,” “Rendez-vous in Bahia,” “Sureshot Samba,” “The Brazilian Eagle,” “So Much for Gentlemen of Fortune,” and “The Seagull’s Fault.”

“In his verbal-visual genius, it’s impossible to distinguish between the art and the writing; in Pratt’s stories there’s only one line.” –Umberto Eco “I read my first Corto Maltese story when I was ten years old and ever since, this was the version of Corto I’ve wanted on my shelves.” –Matt Fraction STORY, ART, & COVER BY
