of one of my favorite bands, “What a Long, Strange, Trip it’s been.” Having been elected to serve as the 2014 president of the International Fluid Power Society (IFPS), I can pause and reflect on just how I arrived at this point. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this day when BY TOM BLANSETT, CFPAI, CFPS, CFPIHT, CFPCC, I first heard of the organization so many years ago. This Manager of Hydraulics is truly an honor, and I am humbled. Training Services at Eaton Corp. There have been a lot of very smart people in this and 2014 IFPS President industry with whom I have had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with over the course of my career, and many of them have served a number of roles to help get me where I am today. Some of those roles were as mentors, teachers, peers, co-workers, and students. Yes, I have learned a great deal from my teaching experiences over the years, and I have had the privilege of knowing some of the legendary teachers in the industry, such as George Altland of Vickers. In fact, that is really what I want to focus my comments on—education in our industry. I’m sure I am preaching to the choir when I say that education is extremely important in any professional field, but in some aspects, it is uniquely so in the fluid power industry because there is not a widely accepted and consistent set of standards that exist for educating students in the technologies of fluid power. Unlike ABET, which is the accreditation body for engineering and technology degree programs, there are no specific standards that are universally adopted and accepted to ensure that those working within the industry at various levels have consistent core knowledge and skill levels. The closest the fluid power industry has are the various certifications offered through the IFPS. What is lacking is a consistent and agreed-upon set of teaching standards to ensure that everyone attains at least the same foundational levels of knowledge. A lot of different sources offer hydraulic training with a wide and varied level of instruction. There are programs that propose to teach basic hydraulics in as little as a day to well-structured associate degree programs lasting for two years. A disturbing trend over the past few years is that many of the individuals who say they are seeking knowledge aren’t as concerned about the quality of the instruction and the depth as they are about the length of time they have to lose from “work” and corresponding cost to obtain a “certificate.” As a result, those individuals who take the shortcuts don’t possess enough knowledge to perform optimally. Because of this, I am a firm believer in IFPS certifications. They offer the best tool currently available to evaluate and substantiate an existing knowledge and skill set. It is a shame that companies within the industry don’t as a whole actively embrace and seek certification for their employees. Certification provides a mechanism of validating that those responsible for the operation, maintenance, and selection of fluid power components and systems have met at least some minimum established standard of knowledge. I encourage all professionals in the industry to take a positive step forward and attain certification at whatever level is appropriate for their job functions. This would go a long way to help improve safety, reduce energy waste, enhance productivity, and promote the professionalism of those within our industry.

PEOPLE WITH A PURPOSE – These submissions should depict fluid power professionals at work or working on fluid power equipment [e.g., a group shot of certified employees by the company sign, employees assembling or testing equipment (safety glasses required), a preview of activities you’re planning to celebrate on Fluid Power Professionals' Day]. POWER DENSITY – These submissions should depict large pieces of equipment or the amazing power that can be achieved through fluid power systems (e.g., large tunnel boring equipment, the valves in a processing plant, descaling in a hot strip mill). PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE – These submissions could depict the conductors and connectors used in most fluid power systems or could depict the path a piece of equipment creates (e.g., hose, tubing, or pipe; a conveyor; road building). It has been said that fluid power is a “hidden giant” because it is so common in every aspect of our day-to-day existence that we have simply overlooked the obvious. There is not a vehicle, ship, plane, or train that can operate without fluid power. There is no consumer item, no electronic gadget, and no morsel of food we grow that can exist in enough quantity at a cost we can afford without the use of fluid power and our efforts. From the ancient waterwheels of an emerging agrarian economy through the renaissance of industrial revolution to the automation and information technology age of today, we have worked to utilize, maintain, improve, and advance this all-encompassing technology. These efforts have improved productivity, ensured safety, and provided critical services that improve the quality of all of our lives. THANK YOU!
WHY JUNE 19TH? A little bit of history behind the date is interesting. Blaise Pascal—a French mathematician, inventor, writer, and physicist—was born on this day clear back in 1623. His work in hydrodynamics and hydrostatics, including the invention of the hydraulic press, paved the way for all future innovations. He was also instrumental in experiments in pneumatics that examined the behavior of air in a vacuum and validated the work of the man who invented the barometer, Evangelista Torricelli. Because of Blaise Pascal and his work, the scientific foundation of thermodynamics and fluid power was set to build upon for those who followed.

CELEBRATE THE DAY: Wear emblems, pins, badges, and shirts noting your fluid power affiliation or organization. Plan a picnic. Demonstrate practical hydraulics to the kids with a squirt gun battle or just set up the sprinkler in the back yard. On your way to the beach, pool, or water park, note how many fluid power applications you can spot. Make this a special day in your life of day-to-day work in fluid power by taking the time to celebrate with your friends and colleagues in the industry. IN-LINE FLOW CONTROL SERIES Clippard Instrument Laboratory, Inc. ΠThe PQ-FV in-line flow controls can be easily added to existing circuitry, and are lightweight and compact in size. Since it is a tube-to-tube connection, in-line flow controls may be installed as a meter-in or meter-out device. lowserve Corp., a provider of flow control products and services for the global infrastructure markets, has harnessed the high-accuracy surface measurement capabilities of AMETEK Taylor Hobson’s Talyrond 585 metrology tool to analyze micro-features laser machined onto its most advanced mechanical seals. In developing the mechanical seals, Flowserve pioneered entirely new laser-machining techniques at its Temecula, Calif., facility that involved incorporating microfeatures, such as waves and concentric grooves, onto the faces of its seals. The Flowserve seals were developed for use in harsh environments and highly demanding applications, such as pipelines, boilers, pumps, and compressors, where seals would often come in contact with highly abrasive or difficult-tohandle materials at elevated temperatures and pressures. The advanced surface features are designed to greatly extend the life of some seals, allow them to run without making contact, or eliminate leaks and other operational issues. To develop the seals and ensure their performance, Flowserve needed a reliable, easy-to-operate surface measurement tool. It required a high-accuracy instrument that could repeatedly measure seals in a range of diameters and contours with complex surface features and made from a variety of materials. The Talyrond 585 proved up to the task on all counts and, combined with proprietary Flowserve software, established itself as an integral, complementary instrument in the company’s analytical laboratory. In developing this series of instruments, Taylor Hobson combined its experience in highaccuracy surface measurement with its expertise in ultra-precision machining. AIR ACTUATORS Win Over Users with Durability and Long Service Life BY CONTITECH
T
he air actuators are single-acting pneumatic cylinders, and are used in machine and plant engineering. Thanks to their robust and simple design, they offer unique advantages over conventional pneumatic cylinders in many application fields. They are used primarily where extreme force has to be generated and adverse ambient conditions prevail. In addition to the standard range, there are also special material designs available as catalog items for particular applications. For instance, there are air actuators that are heat resistant for

temperatures up to 257°F (high-temperature versions) or cold resistant down to -75°F (low-temperature versions). ECO air actuators are used in the case of aggressive media in the paper-producing and chemical industries.
A SIMPLE DESIGN FULL OF ADVANTAGES Air actuators can withstand high dynamic loads. The materials used have been optimally tried and tested in the production of commercial and passenger vehicles, as well as rolling stock. The dimensionally stable elements in
their design are compatible to that of a tire or an air spring. This simple construction allows for complete solutions that are cost effective. The rodless construction functions without parts or seals moving against each other. This prevents any stick-slip effect, thus eliminating static friction. The actuators respond immediately and uniformly, even to small variations in pressure. In pneumatic applications, they can be operated using either oil-free or lubricated compressed air. Depending on the product type, the air actuators can be used for tilt angles up to 30°. This characteristic enables the designer to avoid costly con-

necting elements and articulated constructions. The air actuators also continue to operate reliably even with a lateral displacement of up to 0.79". The small design height means that they can be integrated in compact constructions. When unpressurized, they can be installed quickly and easily, thereby saving time and money. Another advantage: Their flexibility allows air actuators to even compensate for assembly inaccuracies, once again demonstrating their versatility.
FRICTIONLESS AND LOW WEAR Particularly under harsh operating conditions involving dirt, dust, particles, or mud, air actuators are often significantly superior to conventional pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders, for example in wood processing, which generates coarse-grained particles. With conventional push-rod cylinders, the particles can accumulate on the push rod, resulting in wear and leakage when moving through the sealing elements. In comparison, air actuators have no sliding seals or articulated joints. In air actuators, the stroke results from deformation on the bellows wall. Dirt particles on the bellows wall stay outside and do not come in contact with sealing parts. Air actuators are also low wear, even in adverse operating conditions. Where actuators are used, the costly precision guides required for conventional pneumatic cylinders, which are sensitive to dust and dirt, are not needed.
UNIFORM CONTACT PRESSURE IN RAIL TRANSPORT One example of the frictionless function of the air actuators is the application of these products in pantographs, which are used for transferring current from a fixed overhead power line to rail vehicles. They ensure uniform contact pressure in changeable weather conditions and at high speeds. Air actuators function reliably and free of friction throughout their long service life.
ContiTech has over 50 years of practical experience with air actuators. Over this time, various air spring designs were developed, which can be subdivided into convoluted air spring and rolling lobe air spring designs. Among the convoluted air springs, there are single, double, and triple wall types, also known as single, double, and triple convoluted air springs. Rolling lobe air springs are supplied with and without end beads. In the version with end beads, the connecting parts are formfit to the bellows. Another type of air actuator is the sleeve-type rolling lobe air spring, in which the connecting parts are joined to the bellows like on a hose, using clamping sleeves, also known as “clamping rings.” Both designs originally came from the development of air springs for passenger and commercial vehicles. The company’s product range of convoluted air springs is structured according to the design of the fastening and connecting parts: C, D, and R types. C types are air actuators that are single, double, or triple convolution air springs with a formfit, airtight connection with metal plates. These metal plates have fastening and air connection threads. D types are air actuators with two-part, removable connecting components. (Air actuators with open bead-ring connecting parts are referred to as “R types.”) These connections seal the actuator directly to the machine. Their bead rings made from metal act as a flange and can be connected directly to the machine. They are available with diameters of between 5.70" and 37.40". The range of air actuators for industrial applications is rounded off with sleeve air springs with plastic connecting parts, known as “S types.” This design is derived from the manufacture of commercial vehicles, where they are used as seat and cab mounts, for example.
COMPLETE RANGE AVAILABLE AROUND THE WORLD Available in a broad product range and as customized individual deigns, the air actuators are capable of dealing with even the toughest pneumatic jobs in machine and plant engineering. The pneumatic cylinders are available with diameters ranging from 2.36" to 39.37", strokes of up to 20.48", and standard pressure of 116 psi. They have a lifting power of 112 lbs to 98,915 lbs. Designs for operating pressures of up to 232 psi are also available for special applications.

Global Manufacturing Update By Chad Moutray, Chief Economist, National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)
November 8, 2013 – The global economy continues to see progress this autumn, with manufacturing activity picking up from recent softness. The JPMorgan Global Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) increased from 51.8 in September to 52.1 in October, its highest point since May 2011. While this still reflects only modest growth, stabilization in Europe and Asia has helped to lift overall sentiment, new orders, and production in many key markets. Moreover, all top 10 export destinations for U.S.-manufactured goods grew on net in October with a PMI value greater than 50. This was the first time since we began preparing this report that no countries contracted, and it represents a nice turnaround from only two months ago when half of these markets contracted. This progress can also be seen in much of the underlying data, but with slow growth overall. For example, the Markit Eurozone Manufacturing PMI has shown modest expansion for four consecutive months—a sign that Europe has begun to rebound after its deep two-year recession.
Despite the more uplifting news, the European Commission this week slightly lowered its forecast for European real GDP to 1.1% growth in 2014, down from an earlier estimate of 1.2% growth. France and Greece both continue to contract, suggesting pockets of weakness are still present. Moreover, recent data on retail sales and employment continue to suggest challenges. The European Central Bank continues to worry about sluggish economic growth and disinflation, and yesterday, it surprised the market by lowering its key interest rate to 0.25%. On a more positive note, the prospect of even more minimal growth has lifted spirits across the continent, with the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment reflecting increased relative optimism in October.

The story is similar in Canada, throughout Asia, and in the emerging markets. The RBC Canadian Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.6 in October, its fastest pace since April 2011. New orders and production have rebounded from softness during the spring and summer. We hope better economic news in Canada—our largest trading partner—will increase demand for our exports there. Likewise, the HSBC China Manufacturing PMI has expanded for three straight months, albeit slowly, up from 50.2 in September to 50.9 in October. Moreover, while economic growth has decelerated over the past few years, real GDP picked up from 7.5% in the second quarter to 7.8% in the third quarter. Industrial production and fixed asset investments have also been higher in the third quarter, suggesting improvements in overall activity. Furthermore, stabilization in Europe and Asia has helped to buoy most of the emerging markets, with the HSBC Emerging Markets Index up from 50.7 to 51.7. Nonetheless, growth in U.S.-manufactured goods exports remains frustratingly low so far this year despite modest gains in the economies of our major trading partners. U.S.-manufactured goods exports have risen just 1.8% through the first eight months of 2013 relative to the same time period in 2012, using non-seasonally adjusted data. This represents only marginal improvement from July’s 1.6% pace, and it presents a challenge in our nation’s ability to double exports by 2015 as outlined in the President’s National Export Initiative. Reduced year-to-date exports to Europe account for much of the slower pace of U.S.-manufactured goods exports, with eased growth rates to many of our other large trading partners, as well. However, the recent deceleration in the U.S.-euro exchange rate should help to boost our exports to the EU. Next week, we will get industrial production data from a number of countries, including the United States. Output is expected to continue to show signs of improvement in the United States and China, but production is predicted to decline somewhat in the Eurozone. Europe is also anticipated to report its second straight month of positive real GDP growth, with thirdquarter data similar to the second-quarter growth rate of 0.3%. On the trade front, negotiations continue around the clock on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) talks, while the Administration, Congress, and the business community accelerate efforts to move forward on the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA). Manufacturers worked across the Atlantic to support the inclusion of key trade secret issues in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (T-TIP) trade discussions as U.S. and EU
negotiators prepare to return to the table this month and next to make progress on these negotiations. All eyes turn again toward Bali as the World Trade Organization (WTO) seeks to address trade facilitation and information technology liberalization to cut red tape and unnecessary costs at the border.

Meeting Reinforces Show as Global Industry Gathering Place

FPE 2014 is the site of the 2014 International Fluid Power Summit, a meeting of leaders from fluid power associations across the globe. Show co-owner National Fluid Power Association (NFPA) is hosting the event. The International Fluid Power Summit typically attracts key association leaders from countries including Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Energy Storage Solutions for Fluid Power Systems
O
ne of the primary research challenges identified on the Technology Roadmap for the Fluid Power Industry has to do with increasing the energy storage density of fluid power systems. Hydraulic accumulators can store a lot of energy, but unfortunately are still too big for widespread use in applications like hybrid passenger cars and medical-assist devices. So it was a rare treat for me to be able to participate in an ideation session at the Fall Annual Meeting of the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) focused on generating new approaches to this difficult problem. (Truth be told, I was more of an observer than a participant, but it was a treat all the same.)
Guided by Barry Kudrowitz, an assistant professor of Product Design at the University of Minnesota, about 20 industry engineers, university professors, and graduate students split off into three work teams and tackled the problem with surprising enthusiasm and creativity. Fig. 1 shows Professor Jim Van de Ven, also of the University of Minnesota—whose lab, by the way, is already working on a novel approach to the problem: a flywheel accumulator. But I really want you to look at all the yellow Post-it notes on the wall behind him. Each one contains another new idea for how to increase the energy storage density of fluid power systems. Brainstorming these new ideas was fun, but it was just the first step of the process. Once

the teams had their ideas up on the wall, it was time to select the best ones and create some prototypes—not out of iron castings and high viscosity fluids—but out of plastic cups, cardstock, straws, balloons, and any of a number of household items Barry had brought expressly for that purpose. The objective was not to create a working model, but to create a 3-dimensional representation of the idea—which research shows is more likely to communicate the basic concepts and make them stick in your brain. Fig. 2 is one of the projects developed by the team I was on—this one ably led by Spencer Stober of ExxonMobil. He calls it the Phase Change Accumulator, and if this non-engineer understands it correctly, it works—theoretically—by

having different fluids with different phase change properties in each of the balloons. When materials change phase—go from a liquid to a gas, for example—they release a tremendous amount of energy. Problem is, they release it all at once, so if the fluid in your accumulator changes phase, you’ve got this sudden burst of energy that is difficult (and dangerous) to control. But if your accumulator has different fluids that change phase at different temperatures and pressures, than you should be able to better control a cascade of small releases of energy as you take the overall accumulator through a set pattern of pressure changes. No prizes were given out at this Science Fair, but based on the reactions from the real engineers in the room, this seemed like an idea with real potential. It was a fun afternoon, but more importantly, the sheer number of creative ideas produced demonstrated to me that the challenges facing the fluid power industry are temporary. As we continue to add more young engineers to the team, the solutions will inevitably come.

ICUEE 2013 had a record 862 exhibitors, and the show floor hit a record 1,173,957 net square feet, including co-located H20-XPO and iP Utility Safety Conference & Expo. The indoor and outdoor exhibits offered utilities and utility contractors the ultimate in comparison shopping for new products and equipment, with the hands-on product demonstrations that are a hallmark of ICUEE. INDUSTRY EDUCATION AND NETWORKING ENHANCE SHOW QUALITY, VALUE A record 11 co-located education programs and events—more than double the previous benchmark—provided attendees with additional value for their show experience. Attendees purchased 40% more education tickets for ICUEE 2013 than at the last show, underscoring the relevancy of the targeted, expert education offered by leading industry groups to better meet attendees’ specific needs. “ICUEE is known as a venue for utility and contractor professionals to meet face to face with their industry peers across the country and worldwide to exchange information. ICUEE also provides the opportunity to talk with industry executives and product experts, and to be the first to see new product launches, discover new suppliers, and find solutions to tough problems,” stated Mooney. “There were numerous new product introductions, and we heard many favorable comments from both attendees and exhibitors about the high caliber of the 2013 show and the high-quality professional support from AEM as show owner and producer,” she added. ICUEE 2013 also featured jobsite safety demonstrations and a new indoor “demo stage.” Specialized exhibit pavilions helped attendees find specific products and companies; a New Products & Technologies program (online and onsite) and an interactive, personalized online Show Planner also helped attendees make the most productive use of their time at the show.

FLUID POWER SYSTEMS CONFERENCE DELIVERS SOLID EDUCATIONAL CONTENT FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR
QUESTION What do organizations like the National Fluid Power Association, the FPDA Motion and Control Network, and the International Fluid Power Society have in common? ANSWER They all want to educate the OEMs and end-users that rely on fluid power to design and maintain the most reliable and energy-efficient fluid power systems possible. During the November Fluid Power Systems Conference, co-hosted by the NFPA, FPDA, and IFPS, held in Rosemont, Ill., conference attendees were able to do just that. Now in its third year, the conference (formerly known as Energy Efficient Hydraulic and Pneumatic Conference) helped to ensure that fluid power is a more competitive and logical technology choice now and in the future. Attendee feedback concurred that this conference gave participants the opportunity to enhance their educational prowess for themselves and their organizations. Fluid power industry engineers and technicians took advantage of the dynamic, interactive environment of the conference to learn design concepts critical to developing efficient fluid power systems, techniques to keep the systems operating at peak efficiency, and discussions about the future direction of reliable and energy-efficient fluid power. The three-day program provided the following:

1. Design workshops communicated and explored why energy efficiency and reliability are increasingly a concern for the machine builder and the important role that fluid power can play in increasing machine efficiency and reliability. 2. Facilitated round-table discussions provided an opportunity for peers to come together to share specific challenges among many different industries and applications.

THE ANTI-ROBOT Optimizing Controls for a Sports Machine BY JONATHAN TIPPETT
ave you ever dreamed of having a two-story tall, 200hp, 4-legged, hydraulic mech suit to run around in? I have, so we’re building one. It's called Prosthesis: The Anti-Robot. This is not a new idea. Many sci-fi movies have depicted machines like this over the years; the legendary Power Loader in Aliens, the menacing Ampsuit in Avatar, and most recently, the absurdly colossal, monster-busting, dual-piloted Jagers in Pacific Rim. While these machines were remarkable and exciting, Prosthesis differs from them in two very crucial ways: 1) it's real, and 2) it's built for racing. These two criteria introduce unique challenges in the design of the hydraulic system. In order to understand the hydraulics, however, we must first understand the application. Prosthesis: The Anti-Robot is a 100% human-controlled, two-story tall, 3,500-kg, 4-legged running machine designed for

competitive sport. It is an ongoing educational research project intended to inspire future engineers, designers, and creators while in the pursuit of an entirely new human experience. It is being built by a team of volunteers with the support of industry sponsors, academic partners, and a Vancouver-based educational non-profit called The eatART Foundation that supports the creation of large-scale, technically sophisticated art projects to educate people about alternative energy technology. A CAD rendering is show in Fig. 1. First and foremost, Prosthesis is built for the pilot. Its four massive legs are controlled via a full-body, exo-skeletal interface worn by the pilot (Fig. 1), who is strapped into the center of the machine. Hydraulic power to operate the legs is supplied by electric pumps, driven by a light-weight, 150-kW lithium-ion battery pack. The movement of the legs, including all balancing, running, or (given enough courage) jump-

ing, is entirely up to the skill of the pilot. There are no computers controlling the movement of the machine, no background-stabilizing algorithms, and no auto-pilot. That is why it is called an anti-robot. Robots do things for you; antirobots leave everything up to the pilot. A machine like this has never been built before, so when tackling the power plant and control system design, we had to think carefully about what we were trying to achieve. As a platform for development and pilot training, we have built a 2:3 scale prototype leg called the “Alpha Leg.� It is mounted on a hinged tower so it can be dynamically tested and loaded, and eventually ridden. It has a 1 DOF rotary knee joint and a 1 DOF rotary hip joint, both actuated by hydraulic cylinders. The pilot straps his arm into an exoskeletal interface that lets him control the knee with his elbow and the hip with his shoulder. This interface starts out on the ground but can be mounted atop the leg for the next stage of training. Fig. 2 shows it next to Prosthesis for scale.

The most important distinction from its sci-fi counterparts is that it is a real machine, which means there are consequences when something fails or goes out of control. From a hydraulics perspective, this equates to a need for durability, reliability, and stability. Because it is built for sport, however, it has to feel right. This means the controls have to be responsive, light, and ergonomic to deliver the ideal experience to the pilot. Excessive automation and technological intervention are not necessarily the right solution. Prosthesis is a sports machine, and the pilot is the athlete. It would undermine the purpose of the machine to simply hand over the controls to computers. Putting the human in control has several advantages: 1) it will save us from the robot apocalypse, 2) it creates a rewarding challenge for the pilot, and 3) it takes advantage of the most sophisticated and adaptable control system in the world, the human nervous system. This is often referred to in robotics as “human-in-theloop-controls.” For a racing machine, the controls must be repeatable and stable enough to master with practice but require low enough input forces that the machine can be operated for at least 20 minutes without excessive fatigue. To start out, we wanted to keep things simple and direct.

FIRST-GENERATION INTERFACE PURE MECHANICAL - A TECHNOLOGICAL BASELINE The first incarnation of the control system represents the simplest possible way to achieve the basic positional feedback control system we needed. It used a purely mechanical “hydraulic logic” circuit to control mechanical spool valves, which directed hydraulic power to the working cylinders in the leg. The first-generation exoskeletal interface is shown with the Alpha Leg in Fig. 4. This system used three, small, passive, lowpressure hydraulic cylinders per joint, plumbed in parallel: an input cylinder attached to the exoframe, a feedback cylinder in the corresponding joint in the leg, and a signal cylinder on the lever of the corresponding spool valve. The schematic of the complete system is shown in Fig. 3. When the pilot moved his arm, flow would go from the input cylinder on the exo-frame to the signal cylinder on the spool valve atop the platform and open the valve (essentially remotely operating the valve). This would cause the joint on the leg to move and bring the feedback cylinder with it, which would move the signal cylinder on the valve in such a way as to close
the valve once the leg joint caught up with the position of the exo-frame. If the pilot wanted to keep the valve open to keep the joint moving, he would have to keep moving his arm. This created a very smooth and stable positional feedback control system with essentially only three moving parts (aside from the spool valve). It was interesting to note that if the feedback cylinder (in the joint) was plumbed directly to the signal cylinder (on the spool valve), resonance and shuddering would occur at certain flow rates. By putting the pilot in the middle of the loop, the feedback signal was sufficiently damped before affecting the valve, creating a stable system across all operating conditions. While functionally very satisfactory, the system suffered from three main problems: a large deadband, limited adjustability, and high input forces.
SECOND-GENERATION INTERFACE THE INTRODUCTION OF ELECTRONICS – PERFORMANCE AT THE EXPENSE OF SIMPLICITY The next-generation control system, shown in Fig. 5, addressed all of these problems by switching to solenoid valves and controllers donated by

Hydraforce. This reduced the deadband, introduced many more points and ranges of adjustment, and allowed input forces to potentially be reduced to nearly zero. The hydraulic logic circuit was reduced to two cylinders—the input cylinder on the exo-frame and feedback cylinder in the joint on the leg— with the valve transducer connected in series with the input cylinder by a common arm linkage as shown in Fig. 6. Because the input signal was picked up by a rotary encoder, the input force could be as low as desired and was set by adjusting a centering spring. The damping in the system was adjusted through a separate damper. The ratios of all of these elements could be adjusted independently to give the right amount of resistance and stability required for “that sporty feel.” Further, the programmability of the Hydraforce valves gave another point of control to adjust response curves or compensate for factors like user skill and preference and asymmetric cylinder response. While this more advanced technology solved many of the user experience issues, it is more complex and will require more tuning to reach peak performance. We are presently working with the Hydraforce applications engineers to

optimize the system for conditions like overrunning loads and high-differential pressures seen when moving the leg through the air unloaded. There is still work to be done, but the system promises to produce the right combination of performance and usability to be worthy of a sports machine. Once this system is proven to be
