The emergence of the telecom tower sector in India is a testament to Bharti Group’s thought leadership in the Telecommunications Industry. Bharti Infratel was created as an independent telecom tower company, providing basic (passive) infrastructure services and sharing opportunities to all mobile operators, while providing compelling savings and operational efficiencies.

Infratel is an internal division of Airtel, managing the passive infrastructure requirements of their wireless business

Call tariffs nose-dive as multiple players join the fray. Mobile operators seek out new methods to reduce CapEx and OpEx while rapidly extending reach

Bharti Infratel is carved out of Airtel as an independent tower company, providing compelling savings and ready-to-use infrastructure to all wireless operators

In line with the same objective, Indus Towers is created as a Joint Venture between Bharti Infratel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular in a stake share of 42 : 42 : 16

A win-win for telecom operators and the Indian economy The emergence of the Telecom Tower industry has led to optimal utlisation of infrastructure and increased mobile coverage in RRI (rural, remote and inaccessible) areas. As a direct consequence, telecom services became more affordable, helping integrate remote sections of the country into the mainstream, and as it reached the deepest pockets, improving the quality of life in the local communities.

Benefits of Shared Infrastructure to Telecom Operators • Substantial CapEx savings to Operators – free cash flows • Optimum utilisation of Infrastructure • Significant benefits achieved through synergies of sharing • Tenant-on-Tenant rental cost reductions and savings • Operator can focus on their core competencies and other areas of growth • Ready-to-use infrastructure enabling quicker rollouts for additional tenant operators • Infratel continuously works towards improving cost and operational efficiencies

Rural and remote areas Several parts of rural India suffer from low or no availability of Grid Power and the poor connectivity by road. An essential national objective is to integrate these RRI areas and make them an equal part of the development. Infratel helps facilitate telecom presence in rural areas like the Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa

Hostile and inaccessible terrains TInfratel has presence in areas, which are marked by tough terrains, extreme climatic conditions, high altitudes and erratic grid power. Be it the picturesque yet difficult to reach stretches of North Eastern States and Assam, or the mountainous terrains of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir – Infratel has helped map these states on the telecom network.

Committed to a greener, cleaner world Bharti Infratel was the first telecom tower company to take proactive and bold steps in adopting cleaner technologies for power generation, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the telecom industry.

Green Towers P7 initiative Infratel’s landmark green initiative, which introduced innovative power generation models to improve operations, increase energy efficiency, provide 24x7 network service uptime and successfully implement these at a large scale to reduce diesel usage and hence the carbon footprint

Infratel bagged the ‘Green Mobile Award’ at the 2011 GSMA Annual Global Mobile Awards for its ground-breaking P7 Green Towers initiative

2010 Bharti Infratel pioneered the concept of a ‘Tower Operations Center’ which serves as the centralized Control Room that functions as a single point of contact for flashing and reporting all site-downtime alerts, which are routed to the concerned service technician,

and “feet on street” who manage the Towers. The Center also maintains a whole lot of data on the status of the 30,000 towers across the country. Right from the health of the equipment, down to the last service alert, every single piece of information is stored and monitored by a large team of qualified personnel, with the help of sophisticated software and equipment.
