elivery of wheeled bins to East Northamptonshire households has begun as the first bin deliveries are rolled out across the south of the district. Residents are starting to take delivery of their brand new wheeled bins and food waste caddies ready to start recycling more than ever before. The district wide delivery will take three to four weeks to complete with the new service starting on 1 August. Cllr Steven North, Leader of East Northamptonshire Council, Waste Management project board member, Cllr Glenn Harwood MBE and waste management staff have been out and about across the district, speaking to residents and explaining how the new system will work. Steven said: “It’s great to be at roll-out stage and for residents to see the bins for themselves. Hopefully, this will allay any worries they have about handling and storing the bins as they take up roughly the same amount of ground space as the recycling boxes. “We’re pleased to report that the majority of residents will take delivery of the bins and are looking forward to recycling more, particularly with the launch of the food waste service which means residents can recycle all their food scraps, eggshells and teabags.” Islip resident, Cathy Brazier, said: “I’m glad that the council makes recycling a priority because we can’t keep putting our rubbish in to the land. We all need to be making sure we re-use or re-cycle as much as possible.

“Also, the new wheeled bins are much easier to use and move about than carrying several boxes to the kerbside, and we won’t need to sort our recycling any more. Having bins with lids means we won’t have rubbish blowing down the street on windy days.” The vast majority (over 98%) of properties in East Northamptonshire will receive the set of bins and caddies and information packs unless they live on streets that have already been identified as unsuitable for wheeled bins or are in communal accommodation. These properties are being notified separately of the alternative service arrangements in place for them. Please make sure you read the information pack which will be delivered with your food caddies, and includes a useful calendar with collection days and a special ‘wheel’ which sets out what goes in which bin. Approximately one third of households will have a new collection day. The new system does not start until 1 August and please ensure you put the correct wheeled bin out for that week. If you’re lucky enough to be on holiday before 25 July, please ask family, friends or a neighbour to wheel the bins onto your property. For more information on which day each town or village will receive the bins, visit www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/ newcontract. For more information on the service, see page 9 ■

Update on Link phase work on Rushden High Street The final stage of the current improvement work to Rushden High Street has begun. The Link phase will be carried out in sections and will improve the length of the High Street between the Southern Gateway and the Town Square in front of the Wesleyan Church. The first stage will take around 6 weeks to complete and involves kerbing, paving and surfacing the section of road between the Southern Gateway and Coffee Tavern Lane. The road will be closed to traffic on this section except for access for delivery vehicles. Drivers can access the High Street from Coffee Tavern Lane, where the one way direction has been reversed for the duration of the work. There will be full pedestrian access at all times to shops and businesses, and ample parking is available in the nearby free car parks. The bus services will continue to run and the bus stop is located on College Street. As the project proceeds there will be a need to temporarily relocate the bus stop so please look out for details nearer the time. The whole of the work will take around 22 weeks, and should be completed before the Christmas trading period. Look out for further updates on the council’s web site at www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk and Nene Valley News. ■

Higham Ferrers l Twinning is coming to town again as a party from Higham’s twin town of Hachenburg will be visiting England 8 - 11 July. The twinning arrangement has been going for 21 years and the members alternate each year between visits to Germany and to the UK. Hachenburg is the same size as Higham Ferrers and is set in a beautiful wooded area called the Westerwald. This is about an hour from the river Rhine and visits are often made to this area, as it is so picturesque. Gill Mercer, Chairman of the Twinning Association, said: “They always make us so welcome when we go to Germany. We have made such good friends. Twinning is about learning how other people live and understanding their customs and the different ways they do things. We are very pleased that they are now able to bring a number of young people, as that way we hope that the tradition will be carried on.” During their trip, they will be visiting Rushden’s Party in the Park and the Black Country Museum. The visitors from Germany usually stay with host families. If anyone is interested in hosting a German guest or visiting Germany for the next visit, contact Gill Mercer at compiforce@ yahoo.co.uk or on 01933 313362.

Summer Safety Day at Stanwick Lakes

T

he East Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership is holding a Summer Safety Day with information, advice, non alcoholic cocktails to make and try, a chance to meet your local police officers and PCSOs, a quiz with prizes and a messy play area provided by SureStart. It’s all happening at Stanwick Lakes on Saturday 30 July from 10am to 4pm and is running alongside an open day taking place at the Northamptonshire Police Headquarters in Northampton. Officers and staff from the partnership will be on hand to provide you with prevention and protection advice so it’s the ideal time to discuss any concerns you have about your neighbourhood. You can also find out what the Community Safety Partnership has been doing to reduce crime and anti social

behaviour in East Northamptonshire including graffiti removal, youth work and crime prevention. Chief Inspector Gary Aston, Chair of the East Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership, says: “During the past 12 months we have seen great strides made by East Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership in delivering positive outcomes, highlighting East Northamptonshire as a safe place for people to live, work and visit. “Communicating the good work that we are doing to members of the public plays an essential part in confidence. This event is a good example of how we do this. So take this opportunity to meet the different partner agencies and find out what services are available to you in your area.” Cllr Brian Northall, Community

Celebrate Love Parks Week with I-Grow I-Grow, the community group for the John Pyel ward in Irthlingborough, is inviting residents to join them for a Love Your Park fun day on Saturday, 23 July. Love Parks Week is an annual campaign, organised by parks charity GreenSpace. Each year hundreds of events take place enabling thousands of people to get out and enjoy their parks and help put forward the case for reinvestment. I-Grow will host a free family fun day, 11am – 2pm, to celebrate the pocket park in Les O’Dell Park off Allen Road/Hayway. The event will be a mixture of fun activities as well as helping to make improvements to the park. Residents are invited to join in a litter pick, help paint the entrance fences and do some gardening. There will also be an opportunity to learn more about the environment with Groundwork’s Green Team. Sure Start will entertain the young children and Groundwork’s Spots vs Stripes team will be running activities and games for all ages. These events are a great way to get to know your neighbours and spend quality time in your local park – you could even bring a picnic. The I-Grow group hope this will be as successful as their first event held earlier this year - the St George’s Day and Royal Wedding event. If you’d like to get involved or want to find out more, come along to the next meeting on Tuesday, 12 July at 7pm at the Sure Start centre off Scarborough Street. Agenda items include the Love Your Park event as well as any future events and activities. Volunteer reading buddies needed Volunteer reading buddies are needed to help children take part in the Summer Reading Challenge in Northamptonshire County Council’s libraries. Each year children from across the county aged 4 - 12 take part in the national scheme with incentives, activities and events designed to encourage children to read. This year’s theme is Circus Stars. Anyone aged between 14 and 17 is welcome to apply to help younger children take part in the challenge, discuss their reading and to read with them. Volunteers will be offered training in early July at several locations around the county and will also receive a certificate to show they have taken part. For more information, visit the libraries section at www.northamptonshire. gov.uk or call 01604 236236.

Warmington Playgroup pick their own and enjoy toddling Children from Warmington Playgroup filled plenty of punnets (and their tummies) with strawberries on a trip to the local Pick Your Own farm. The visit included a talk by farmer Paddy explaining what is grown on the farm including wheat, strawberries, rape seed and gooseberries. The children handled the seeds as Paddy explained how they grow into plants for harvesting. The children then set off to fill their punnets with fresh juicy strawberries. For more information about the playgroup, call Josephine Black on 07914 070801 or 01832 280701. Tobias Saenko, 3 enjoying strawberry picking

From the Chairman

A

n early start meant we were in Rothwell by 6 o’clock to walk around the town hearing the Royal Charter being read for the fair. As in Thrapston, markets and fairs are ancient rights and it is great to see a good turn out to enjoy all the activities. I was pleased to represent the district at the service of Thanksgiving for Sir John Lowther. Despite being wounded in WW2, he was indefatigable in his contributions in many ways to charities and groups in Northamptonshire and it was gratifying to see All Saints church in Northampton full for this tribute. The Northampton, Rushden and Wellingborough Sea Cadets Unit beat all the other 300 units in Britain to win the Canada Award for the best unit. Two admirals

were present to take part in the presentation to the cadets who looked incredibly smart on parade. A change into suitable clothes meant there was also a demonstration of skills on the water with sailing, windsurfing and rowing all being shown very ably by the cadets. As always it is great to share in the success of young people and the Northampton University Fashion Show showcased the work of the students from one of the best fashion university departments in Britain. The shoes were fantastic and the textiles and designs followed various themes modelled professionally in the Derngate Centre. It was with great pleasure we visited Ashfield House in Raunds which cares so well for the elderly and those suffering with dementia.

The dedication of the staff and lovely atmosphere meant this is a real home for the residents. After much hard work by the trustees and many volunteers, we were delighted to be at the opening of the new village hall in Stanwick. Thanks to the foresight of councillors many years ago the site was secured by ENC and with a variety of grants the new hall has been built and is a tremendous asset to the community. We attended Manor School

and Sports College’s Cultural Celebration Day where there was a variety of activities representing different continents of the world. Drumming, flamenco dancing and making kites and mosaics were a few of the choices which also included cooking European dishes and viewing and handling animals from different countries. The students had a great day enjoying the international experience. Cllr Sylvia Hughes n

New parking charges at Stanwick Lakes This summer a new parking system will come into effect at Stanwick Lakes which should ease congestion at peak times and also help to raise funds, so that facilities can continue to be maintained at the scale and quality that visitors have come to expect. The new system will be by pay-on-foot at machines in the car park (which will take notes as well as coins), and will reduce queues at the barrier. Stanwick Lakes is run as a self-financing social enterprise by environmental charity Rockingham Forest Trust, in partnership with East Northamptonshire Council. The good news is that for most of the year – currently 310 days – the parking charge remains unchanged. A new ‘super peak’ charge will be introduced for Bank Holidays and Whitsun and school summer holidays when the site is under the most pressure from sheer volume of visitors. It will offer people living locally the best value, by going up according to length of stay, so that those who only want to visit for a couple of hours can still do so without paying any more than they do now. Plus, an annual membership will still be great value at £28 per year per household. Details of the new charges are: Charging period

There will still be no charge for those who walk or cycle to the site. For more information visit www.stanwicklakes.org.uk or contact Stanwick Lakes on 01933 625522. n

Pub door staff trial cameras Door staff at a public house in Rushden have been issued with police body-worn video cameras as part of a threemonth trial. The trial has been introduced by East Northamptonshire’s South Safer Community Team, working to the force target of reducing violent crime across the county by five per cent this year. Sergeant Kevin Byrne, of East Northamptonshire South SCT, said: “We have a challenging target to reduce violent crime and this is just one initiative we are driving. “The Feathers is a wellmanaged establishment and staff at the premises are keen to work closely with us in order to make Rushden a safer place. “The message we are sending out to trouble makers when committing crime is that it’s not just the police that they should be looking out for. They need to be aware that we are working with partners to reduce and detect crime and anti social behaviour. Offenders should expect severe penalties which can include lengthy bans from licensed premises.” The public house will look to purchase their own cameras if they feel they have been a success.

One of the benefits of the cameras is that they can help disprove malicious complaints which door staff at the Feathers have been subjected to in the past. In the past fortnight, the cameras have helped counter claims by a customer in the pub who alleged he had been pushed and slapped by door staff. Sergeant Byrne added: “This patron was a little the worse for wear and he was removed from the public house by door staff who used reasonable force. This was a clear example of the cameras protecting door staff from malicious complaints and allegations of assault.” n

When Sarah met Jet A

year after I finished my role as Chairman of East Northamptonshire Council I have been able to meet up with the guide dog that I sponsored as a result of the support you gave me whilst fundraising during my year in office. His name is Jet, a black Labrador and he is almost a year old. We met at the Leamington Spa Training Centre where Jet will go once he has finished his puppy walking training. His walkers are Andy and Debbie and he lives with their family and two pet dogs. I have received regular puppy progress reports giving me up to date information ranging from his health to

various skills that he has mastered over the last ten months. The progress he has made moving from “needs work” to “Good” and “Excellent” has been down to the patience and dedication that his walkers have given him. Once you have met the trio, you immediately see the team work that goes on, always praising him and encouraging, but also there to enforce discipline. It is heart warming to think that this dog will be providing somebody with the chance to have the freedom that a lot of us take for granted. The trust in each other is enormous. I would once again like to thank you all for the support you gave me. The £5,000 raised has got him this far but it

Caiden gears up for victory

Warmington Playgroup strolled, skipped and hopped around the village for the annual toddlerthon to raise funds for the group. En route, the children hunted for duck posters before receiving their medal for completing the toddle. Fun, games and cream teas followed in the village hall and over £500 was raised from the whole event. Thanks were said to all those who took part and donated raffle prizes.

young boy from Oundle has motocross fever after winning the East of England Auto Challenge. Caiden Wilkinson, 8, has been racing with the Peterborough Junior Motocross Club for three years having taken charge of his first bike (with stabilisers) at just four years old. He was inspired by his dad, Marcus, who raced BMX bikes as a teenager and introduced him to watching motocross on TV. Caiden was delighted to win the East of England Auto Challenge having beaten 19 other racers. He crossed the finish line in his distinctive green Mohican helmet to cheers and applause from family and friends.

Fencing taster days Local residents, Chris and Kate Howser will be starting a new community fencing club at King’s Cliffe Village Hall in September on Wednesday evenings and will be running taster sessions over the summer to introduce beginners to the sport. Fencing is often described as physical chess due to the tactical way it is fought. This means that it‘s not necessarily the fittest/ strongest fencer who wins a fight and so is ideal for those who are not naturally drawn to competitive sport. Chris, current East Midlands and Northampton Epee Champion, British Senior Champion 2005 and winner of three Commonwealth fencing silver medals, is a coach with 20+ years of teaching experience. Kate is a former British ranked number 1 fencer and has also won Commonwealth medals. Chris says: “We’re hoping to build up a core group of top level young fencers who we will train up to compete at county, regional, national and hopefully international level in the years to come. The club will also welcome anyone who wishes to be a recreational fencer who just likes to get fit in a fun atmosphere.” Daytime taster sessions will run through the summer holidays and will visit many of the local Fencing is great for physical activity villages. If your village is and requires tactical thinking not on the list and you know a group of kids who want to have a go at the sport, get in touch. Beginner courses for older children and adults will run over the summer if there is sufficient demand. Mum, Josephine, said: “Caiden was excited to win the Auto Challenge and is already looking forward to his next race. He loves jumping, and has an ambition to one day progress to freestyle motocross, doing tricks to wow the crowd. He is currently in first place in the club standings and hopes to win the championship this year – fingers crossed! His confidence was boosted this year when GoMxProducts sponsored him for tyres.” Next year, Caiden will be moving up to the 65cc class and has already started getting to grips with gears. New waste service starts 1 August Welcome to this special new waste service supplement. It gives you all the information you need to know about your brand new refuse and recycling service which starts in three weeks on Monday 1 August.

Why are we bringing in Latest news a new waste service?

W

• Reduce material going to landfill • Increase recycling • Maintain standards for street cleansing • Reduce contract costs. In order to achieve all this the leading companies in the waste industry recommended a wheeled bin system. They also reported that if we carry on disposing of waste as we are today, and do not improve our system we will not meet these aims and could be fined for exceeding our

allowance for landfill. We are committed to recycling at least 43% of household waste by 2012/13; 48% by 2015/16 and 53% by 2019/20. If everyone in the district gets involved we can achieve far higher rates and become one of the best areas in the country for recycling. This new collection service provided by Kier is in fact costing the council taxpayer considerably less than the current system £1.5 million less over the seven years of the contract. n

pre-identified as unsuitable or communal accommodations. These properties are being notified separately of the alternative service arrangements in place for them, and they will all receive the food waste caddies. If you have requested to opt out of the service and make your own arrangements, please bear with us. The logistics of delivering over 70,000 wheeled bins plus food caddies, means that it is more cost and time efficient for the contractor to deliver to all and then we will collect the extremely small minority of unwanted bins in the first few weeks. Please bear with us in storing the bins until we can collect them. n

e asked the waste industry to come up with a way that would help us to meet our waste reduction and recycling targets, while minimising costs and providing an excellent service for our residents. When tendering, councillors wanted to provide a system that would achieve the following aims: • Maintain a weekly collection of the waste which causes residents the most concern – the smelly food waste

W e have been extremely busy answering your queries and preparing the new service with Kier, our new waste and street cleansing partner, ready for its launch on 1 August. Thank you for your patience during this process. Many of you will by now have received your set of two wheeled bins, two food caddies and an information pack. If you haven’t got yours yet, don’t worry. Deliveries of these will continue throughout July. Initially, most households in the district (over 98% of properties) will receive the standard set of bins and caddies and information packs. The only exceptions are areas that were

New waste trucks will collect your recycling, refuse and food waste when the service starts on 1 August. Look out for a truck like this one down your street.

How is the new service better than the current one? Residents will have a brand new food waste collection service together with a more user friendly recycling service that accepts a wider range of materials than before including plastic containers (margarine tubs, yogurt pots, food trays etc). We will also accept paper,

cardboard, glass, bottles/jars, plastics, cans and cartons including tetrapak type cartons. Place all your recycling loose in the green-lidded wheeled bin. You will no longer need to sort your recyclables into three separate boxes. This will save you time

and confusion over what recycling box is collected which week and what goes in it! The new wheeled bins are pest proof and very sturdy. This means an end to recycling boxes and their contents blowing all over the streets on collection days and refuse sacks being ripped open by

pests and the contents strewn everywhere. We want to encourage you to recycle as much as possible. That is why we are providing larger bins. The crews will collect extra recycling such as cardboard boxes and transparent sacks of loose recyclables. n

Most households will receive two lidded wheeled bins and two food waste caddies

Assisted collections We know that many elderly or disabled residents are concerned about moving the wheeled bins. Some may actually find the wheeled bins are easier to move than carrying the existing boxes full of recycling. However, if you are unable to move your wheeled bin to your collection point and there is no-one able to do this for you, you can apply to join our assisted collection scheme where the crew will collect your bin from an agreed place and then return the bin to where it was stored after emptying. Those already on our existing Official Assist scheme will automatically be placed on our assisted collection list for the new service. n

Where will my recycling go?

Your information pack Y

ou should have received an information pack about the new service with your food caddies. The pack contains a handy recycling wheel to help you remember what you can and cannot recycle and what can go in your food waste caddy. It also includes four information sheets (Recycling, Refuse, Food Waste & Other Services) together with

a calendar showing you which week to put out which wheeled bin. Don’t forget your food waste caddy will be emptied every week. Please check the back of your calendar to see if your usual collection day is changing. Approximately one third of residents will have a new collection day, so that may include you. n

Have you requested different bins? If you have applied for a larger bin(s) please use the standard bins on a temporary basis. We have your details and will soon be sending you an application form to complete. Larger refuse bins will only be considered for large families or those with more than one child in nappies and this need will be reviewed annually. If you requested smaller bin(s), please try the standard size bins for the first few months and see how you get on. The grey lidded bin is not that large and will only be emptied once a fortnight. If it really proves to be an issue, we will seek an alternative

solution for you. We would recommend that if you do not produce a lot of recycling or general refuse, you place the bins out less frequently (once a month) and use the weekly food waste collections to avoid possible unpleasant smells. Please note: We will not collect extra nonrecyclable side waste other than after delays caused by poor weather (such as snow) or the first collection after Christmas/New Year when most of us produce more waste. n

I live in a flat/sheltered housing – which bins will I be getting? At the time of going to print we are in discussion with both sheltered housing providers and those responsible for

blocks of flats in the district. Each building may require a slightly different solution and therefore it is

appropriate to deal with these on a case by case basis. Where possible, they will benefit from our complete recycling,

refuse and food waste collection service. We will contact these residents to discuss their collection arrangements. n

Your recycling will be taken to Kier’s depot at the south of the district. Here it will be transferred to lorries and transported to a recycling facility in south Warwickshire. Your recycling will be separated and sorted, mostly by machines, and then sold on to various recycling markets. Any income the council receives from recycling is used to offset the cost of the collection service and keep council tax down. n

Food waste

M

any of you have told us you already compost, which is great and we don’t want to stop you composting your fruit and vegetable peelings. Our new food waste collection service makes it possible for you to also compost additional products including meat, fish, bones, cooked food and leftovers that you cannot compost at home. It also allows residents who do not have the space or time for home composting to still do their bit through us. We have provided you with two food caddies - an outdoor pest proof caddy and an indoor caddy that will blend in with most modern kitchens. Please do not line the caddies with plastic bags.

The food recycling process cannot handle plastic. Instead, you can use newspaper to line the caddies and soak up liquids such as cooking oils. If you prefer to line your caddies, please use only compostable liners. These are available at: Asda Waitrose http://www.gardeningdelights.com/ http://www.greenliners.co.uk/ http://www.amazon.co.uk http://www.caddiesandliners.co.uk http://www.envirobag.co.uk East Northamptonshire Council does not endorse any of these organisations or products. n

Green waste

The new scheme does not include a collection of green waste such as hedge clippings, grass trimmings etc. We offer a separate service for the collection of green waste. For a small charge you can join the Green Waste Club, currently run on our behalf by Verdant Group. Membership entitles you to a fortnightly collection of green waste in a brown wheeled bin supplied with membership. Home composting is a free and green alternative for the disposal of your green waste or you can take it to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre, run by Northamptonshire County Council. n

What happens to my three recycling boxes? You can keep these. See below for uses for your old boxes*: • Storage in your garage/shed • Ideal for planting veg – remember to drill holes in the bottom for drainage • Storing kids toys • Spare laundry basket • Turn green box upside down, cut out entrance and cover with twigs and grass to make hedgehog home • Under the stairs shoe box • Veg carrier from your allotment • Fill with ice to keep your cans cool when barbecuing *Take care with cutting plastic and make sure children are supervised if trying any of these suggestions. If you do not wish to keep the boxes, we will collect them. Please place them out empty alongside your first new wheeled bin recycling collection in the first two weeks of August. n

How do I keep the bins clean?

These potatoes have thrived in recycling boxes. Just make three to four holes in the bottom for drainage, water regularly, place in sunlight and watch them grow!

Your green lidded recycling wheeled bin should remain clean as recyclables contain no liquids if rinsed beforehand. Your grey lidded bin will stay cleaner if you place your rubbish in bags/ bin liners before putting them in the bin. Another tip is to keep a newspaper at the base of the bin to soak up any liquids that seep through bags. There are companies who specialise in cleaning wheeled bins for a nominal fee. Alternatively, you can use a garden hose or power washer and stiff outdoor brush to scrub the bottom of your bin. Food waste caddies can be washed out easily under the tap due to their size. n

Top tips • Squash/flatten cans and plastic bottles by stepping on them, this will save space in the recycling bin. • Large cardboard boxes are easier to fit into your green lidded bin if you flatten them first. • Rinsing out plastic, glass and cans will help keep the bin cleaner. Putting your wheeled bin out for collection • Leave the correct bin for that week at the kerb of your property by 7am on collection day or after 6pm the evening before. • Bring the bin back onto your property as soon as you can after collection. Bins left out for long periods can encourage vandalism - they may be considered abandoned and be removed. • If you can please label your refuse and recycling bins with your house number/ name. This will help reduce the chance of it being taken by mistake. The bins are the property of the council. If you move house, even within East Northamptonshire you should not take the bins you. n

What can I recycle in the food waste caddy? Your small caddy is to use day to day in the kitchen and the larger 23 litre caddy (with a secure lid to keep animals out) is for putting out for your weekly collection by the refuse/recycling crews. Please leave out your food waste caddy out next to your appropriate wheeled bin for that week. When your rubbish or recycling is collected the crew will empty your food waste into a special pod at the front of the collection vehicle. This will be unloaded separately to the

refuse/recycling. Your food waste will be taken for a process known as Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to produce a compost-like material that can be used as a fertiliser. A by product of the food recycling process is the production of methane that is used to generate electricity. Yes please 3 all food leftovers 3 raw and cooked meat and fish with bones 3 fruit and vegetable peelings

3 egg shells 3 tea bags and coffee grounds. 3 fats and small amounts of used cooking oil (soak oils into newspaper) No thanks 7 any packaging 7 plastic bags 7 non food products 7 garden waste 7 Animal poo/bedding Can I use plastic bags to line my food waste collection caddy? Sorry, no. The food waste will go for AD. Ordinary

plastic bags cannot be composted – this also includes some so-called biodegradable plastic bags. You could line it with sheets of newspaper to keep the caddy cleaner. Why recycle food waste? Over a third of the black sack rubbish we throw away at the moment is food waste. When this goes into a landfill site it rots to produce methane a gas that makes a big contribution to the Greenhouse Effect. Also by keeping food

waste out of your rubbish it will make the rubbish in your grey lidded bin less smelly. I home compost fruit and vegetable peelings, should I stop and put it in with the food waste collection? Please carry on home composting things like fruit and vegetable peelings if you prefer to. Environmentally home composting is the better option for that material but is not suitable for other food wastes. n

What is planning permission? Planning permission is what is needed to carry out works to a building, build a new structure, alter the function of a building, change the use of land or undertake engineering operations. These works are all types of development. Unless the works that you wish to carry out are permitted development, you will need to apply for planning permission. For the majority of developments we, as the Local Planning Authority, decide if planning permission will be granted or refused. There are three things that you need to think about in the first instance: • Do I need planning permission? • Which type of planning permission do I need? • Will I get planning permission? You will also need to consider if you need any other forms of permission or consent for the works you propose. To find out more about types of planning permission, visit our website at www.eastnorthamptonshire.gov.uk/planning or call the Duty Planner on 01832 2225, Monday-Friday, 9am-1pm. n

Award winning family fitness programme

The Big Splash T he Nene Centre and Splash Leisure Pool have joined forces with British Swimming and the BBC to deliver the Big Splash and inspire the nation to swim. It’s the world’s biggest celebration of swimming, stretching over 10 months. The Big Splash will be featured on BBC television, radio and online and some of your favourite BBC faces will be taking part. Double Olympic champion, Becky Adlington is supporting the campaign: “Swimming is my life but just getting in the pool a couple of times a week is a really great way of getting active and staying healthy. I’m right behind anything that encourages people to take the plunge and swim more often.” Why make a Big Splash? • more quality time with your child(ren) • the companionship of an Aqua Fit class • training to be the best

• splashing about and having a fun time The Big Splash knows everyone is different. Visit www.swimming.org/ bigsplash and get involved - tell them why you want to make a Big Splash and they will recommend a range of water-based activities for you. Is it that you want to shape up and tone or enjoy a family activity? Maybe you want to learn to swim or are a returner? Is it for health, fitness or are you competitive? Log onto the website to find out more.

A local healthy lifestyle programme has won a prestigious award for its work helping local families in Northamptonshire become healthier and more active. NHS Northamptonshire Provider Services was awarded for its outstanding work delivering MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!) programmes to local families. The MEND programme is a free 10-week healthy lifestyle course that provides families with information about healthy eating and how to keep active. Accepting the award on behalf of NHS Northamptonshire Provider Services, MEND programme manager, Kerrie Pearson said: “Supporting families to get fit and healthy and achieve a healthier weight is a priority More on P20
