Executive Summary, 2013 I Challenge Diabetes

I Challenge Diabetes (ICD) offers unique, experiential programs that leverage our world class mentors to reach and effectively engage people with diabetes.

Our Reach in 2012: In 2012 ICD ran 53 day and 16 overnight programs across Canada to reach over 3000 participant days in activity-based education. In addition, ICD social media posts reached nearly 3 thousand in the first week of 2013 and is growing along with our clinical partnerships across canada.

Background on ICD: ICD is a not-for-profit charity that designs programs and events to help people of all ages and backgrounds take control of their diabetes. We use experiential learning programs with focus on reinforcing key teachings in practical situations. ICD adds a stronger level of personalized education and powerful mentoring to our programs. We address challenges through naturally occurring moments, developing problem solving skills that foster confidence. ICD partners with health clinics, organizations and schools to reinforce a positive view of life with diabetes. Often increasing compliance, participants see significant health and wellness gains, through A1c drops, increased testing and confidence to take on challenges.

Key Achievement in 2012 While proud of the repeating success of events in 2011, it was excellent to expand our retreat program to 3 more cities. Serving “at risk” youth in 2012 was a key goal to reach, and will continue to be one for ICD. With huge drops in A1c’s for post retreat participants, as large as 8%, the true potential of this program is yet to be seen.

Executive Summary, 2013 Key Leadership Strategy for ICD: ICD has more leadership and speaking experience than any other organization in Canada and includes a wide variety of mentors, from Olympic athletes to hardcore geeks! We strive to reach all age categories and interests in our diverse programming that has allowed for a cross-section of leadership development. With 35+ adult leaders and 20+ youth leaders, the ICD team has developed programs with type 1 elite athletes from more than 10 different sports!

I Challenge Diabetes - 2013 Coming off the momentum of an incredible year in 2012, ICD aims to expand and strengthen in 2013. Plans include: • Over 100 educational programs across 7 provinces. • Expanding and strengthening our current “at risk” mentoring program and adding a first ever retreat in Nova Scotia. • Adding to the diversity of 2012’s programs, ICD will be adding new program concepts such as “The Amazing Race”, an 8-day youth canoe trip, a 7-day adult hiking expedition, and customized medical alert bracelets. • Finally, ICD is striving to inspire the country with “Running on Insulin”. An epic 13-day journey with ICD founder Chris Jarvis running 885km, the entire Bruce trail. This will include community hikes and/or relays each day.
