Mum New Smart Monitor Alerted eathing When Her Baby Stopped Br Owlet Baby Monitor now shipping after private beta release; company shares early success stories from real parents. USA, October 21, 2015 -- Michelle Blanchard’s Owlet Baby Monitor alerted her late one night that her 2-month-old infant had low oxygen levels. Michelle picked up her baby, who was silent and bluish in colour, and began pounding on her baby’s back, clearing her airway of built-up mucus. Baby Pia let out a scream and started breathing again. Michelle’s story is just one of many recent Owlet Baby Monitor stories that have been shared by new parents who were part of the company’s private beta release. The Owlet Baby Monitor, which is available to the public today, is a unique device that leverages pulse oximetry, the same technology used in hospitals, miniaturized into a baby sock 6

to alert parents if their baby’s oxygen levels and heart rate are out of range and they are having difficulty breathing. With unintentional suffocation the leading cause of injury death among U.S. children under the age of one, it’s no wonder parents often have trouble getting a good night’s sleep during baby’s first year. With the Owlet Monitor, mums and dads can rest easy knowing they will be alerted if their baby is in distress. As further proof of providing ease of mind for parents, the Owlet Monitor was just awarded the coveted Parent’s Pick Award, along with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association Safety Category Award at juvenile products largest industry show, ABC Kids Expo in the US. “While awareness around the threat of suffocation has increased in the past decade, many people don’t realise just how quickly and easily it can happen,” said Dr. Milena Adamian, M.D., an investor in Owlet. “Look at the invention and use of car seats-their use has been mandated to prevent infant fatalities and has been successful at that. Comparatively,

suffocation kills 10 times more infants each year than car crashes. It’s time we take advantage of the technology available and give parents the tools they need to help keep their babies safe.” With the Owlet Baby Monitor, vitals readings from the Smart Sock are relayed to the base station and then to parents via a simple smartphone application, enabling them to check in on their baby from across the hall, or even remotely while they are away from home. While the Owlet Monitor collects sophisticated data, the sole purpose of the device is to alert parents if their baby is not breathing or if the baby’s heart rate is out of range-giving parents one less thing to worry about. The Owlet Baby Monitor alert strategy was set by a team of pulse oximetry specialists, pediatricians, neonatologists and pulmonologists. Owlet received the Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and is also undergoing clinical validation for accuracy and sensitivity at the same hospital. Owlet Baby Care is currently seeking FDA clearance and working with researchers and clinicians to develop a device with medical applications. Recently, the company was awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for further development and research, and was included in an exclusive two-week program with Mayo Clinic’s Center for Innovation.

“We’re relentlessly dedicated to providing parents with reliable, easy-to-use devices to monitor baby’s wellbeing,” said Kurt Workman, CEO and co-founder of Owlet Baby Care. “As advanced monitoring technology is made appropriate for the home nursery, and information gathered from devices like the Owlet Baby Monitor give researchers the ability to study ongoing infant health, we hope to help doctors and parents improve infant care starting the moment the baby leaves the hospital.” In addition to the NIH grant, Owlet Baby Care recently received $6 million in new funding, bringing the total raised to $9.2 million. This Series A funding was led by Formation 8 (F8), with participation from Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS Shoes, as well as many of Owlet’s previous investors. “Owlet is using the power of business and technology to make the world a better place,” said Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS Shoes and Owlet investor. “I have used the Owlet Monitor since my son was born and I LOVE the product!” The Owlet Baby Monitor is available for purchase today and retails for $249.99. For more information and to order the monitor, please visit: OwletCare.com. Owlet is not a medical device and children with irregular heart rates, oxygen levels or other special medical needs should not use the Owlet Monitor as their primary monitoring system.

Benefits Of Essential Oils During Pregnancy And Labour After working as a midwife for many years, I have discovered that all women are concerned about which products are safe for themselves and their un-born baby. This is to give some guidance on the benefits, so you can use products with confidence. What are essential oils? Essential oils have been extracted from specific species of plants. They have been known for their ‘magical powers’ for hundreds of years. Now chemists and researchers have shown that the powerful constituents in these essential oils have a therapeutic use, so they have been backed by science and are often used in modern medicines. How to use essential oils Essential oils should only be blended safely for pregnancy by a midwife or a pregnancy qualified aromatherapist. Only a few drops are blended in a carrier (vegetable) oil as the constituents are so powerful and should never be applied directly onto the skin. How are they used? Aromatherapy Massage Body, back, arms and hands, feet and legs. Inhalation diluted in water or on a tissue or pillow Baths, Showers, Foot bath When are they used? Studies have shown using aromatherapy massage can: During Pregnancy a) Help you sleep and relax b) Reduce stress and anxiety on hectic days c) Help to soothe sensitive dry skin d) Energise and help you cope e) Help remove ‘toxins’ from your body, reducing swollen feet and ankles f) Help your skin - natural oils improve skin’s elasticity, allowing a ‘give’ for a growing baby g) Improve circulation, preventing cramps and restless legs h) Reduce muscular discomfort and joint pain i) Help boost your immunity During Labour a) Reduce pain and the need for pain relief b) Shorten labour c) Help you feel relaxed and cared for d) Increase the bonding of the couple Jan Bastard Company Director and Founder of Motherlylove BSc., RN, RM, IAIM www.motherlylove.co.uk | Twitter: @motherlylovexx | Facebook: facebook.com/motherlylove.co.uk Keep Updated | Visit: www.norfolkbump.co.uk | Follow: @NorfolkBabyShow

Rowan House

Empowers Women Through Hypnobirthing

~ Article by Reneé Jane Jeffery ~ Rowan House opened its doors in October 2015 and specialises in Health and Wellbeing for families. Rachel Pailes, Business Development Manager at Rowan House, talked frankly to Iceni about how she wants to promote Hypnobirthing for pregnant women. Rachel, who has formal training as a Child Physiotherapist and in Infant Massage explained how “expectant mothers are all individual in their needs and so require specialised support from the therapists working with them”. One of the therapist working at Rowan House is Emma DufficyRope, a Hypnobirthing therapist. Having been only practising Hypnobirthing techniques for less than 2 years, Emma draws her experience in helping the woman she sees from her 17 years as a midwife. Having recently been awarded the title ‘Norfolk Midwife of the Year’, it’s quite obvious that Emma’s Midwifery training has a positive impact on the services she offers. Hypnotherapy is the practise of using positive affirmations and breathing techniques to help the mother stay calm and in control during her labour. Usually started at around 10

28 weeks, hypnobirthing therapists work with both mothers, fathers to be and/or birthing partners, teaching the process of birth, physiological processes, relaxation strategies, positive reinforcement, massage and how a partner can support the mother. Offering counselling if needed to help the family move past any negative experiences in previous births. Speaking to two of Emma’s clients we discovered how hypnobirthing had impacted on both their pregnancy and birthing experience. Anna Catlin of Norwich spoke of how her first birthing experience ended up with a myriad of interventions and how she sought help from Emma to ensure that her next birth did not end up the same. Anna speaks of how through hypnobirthing her 3.5-hour labour was “full of

joy and positivity” and that it had empowered her husband Toby during labour too.

Kate and husband Andrew found out about Hypnobirthing with Emma through a friend, after undergoing several rounds of IVF, both Kate and Andrew didn’t want any further medical intervention if they could help it, so sought out the help of Emma. Using a relaxation CD Kate laboured at home before going to hospital. She spent 2 hours labouring in a waiting room before a bed was found. She explains that it was the techniques she learned during her time with Emma had helped her cope at a time when most would be struggling. When asked about what she would tell other parents thinking about hypnobirthing she said, “it's amazing, it helps, it gives you the knowledge to believe you can do it”.

Rowan house is a very serene building and clearly has the client’s needs at its heart, focusing on using highly trained, specialised therapists signifies this.

Parents, Children And Pets By Susan Leigh Susan Leigh, Altrincham Counsellor and Hypnotherapist has just published her third book, 101 Days of Inspiration #tipoftheday (ISBN 9781910275160) based on her social media series. A glossy, pocket-sized book, it's full of inspirational quotes & pictures, a treat to give or simply keep for yourself. Yet another parent has recently appeared in the media to discuss his reasons for wanting to agree a contract with his children before allowing them to have a pet. No doubt parents up and down the country are ruefully smiling as they say through gritted teeth, 'good luck with that, we've been there, tried it, got the t-shirt!' A contract, though, can be a great idea in principle. Children will initially agree to anything in order to achieve their desired goal. But an animal, whether it be a pony, dog, cat or guinea pig, needs time, attention and looking after, with some being more demanding than others. 14

Sitting to discuss the ground rules and outline a contract allows time for becoming clear about what's entailed in regularly living with a pet. Feeding, grooming, exercising and cleaning cages, water bowls or litter trays all require consistent input, yet it's the case that the parent becomes the fall back guy, relied upon to take up the slack when fun, friends and other interests become too distracting. A contract requires both parties to sit down together to discuss and negotiate the areas of responsibility, followed by signatures once it's been agreed. Doing this can be a valuable way of focusing the child's mind on what's expected

Keep Updated | Visit: www.norfolkbump.co.uk | Follow: @NorfolkBabyShow

of him/her, with any penalties that may be incurred. Displaying the contract prominently can then provide an ongoing reminder, a point of reference should standards start to slip. Having responsibilities, caring for others and showing respect are important for children to learn at an early age. I often hear of teachers who express their disappointment at parents who are too busy or distracted to teach children about consideration, selflessness and commitment. They complain that oftentimes parents leave it to their children's teachers to do their job for them. So having children look after a pet on a regular basis, even when it's raining, is an unpleasant task or is time-consuming is a crucial lesson for life. A contract can provide a clear reminder of what was agreed during the initial enthusiasm and promises made pre-pet. And a pet can add significantly to a child's life. There are many accounts of children whose mental and physical development was noticeably enhanced after a pet came into their lives. The benefits can be life changing. Dogs especially, don't judge and are often persistent in their demands, wanting stroking and attention, giving unconditional love. They constant presence enables them to become a child's loyal, inseparable companion, sometimes becoming their one true friend in life. This can be especially important if the child feels lonely, different, shy or awkward. Some children will tell their pet everything, so that it becomes their trusted confidante. They may feel comfortable about sharing their secrets, their distress at a family divorce or death, open up about their upset over a situation at home, problems at school and find it easy to disclose their inner fears, anxieties and concerns. It may be that a pet becomes a child's first experience of death and loss. Going through

The benefits can be life changing the death of a much-loved pet and learning to deal with it by asking questions and perhaps having a burial service or ritual can be an important lesson. They learn about grief and its associated emotions.. However, if there's any doubt about a child's ability to sustain interest in years of commitment to an animal it's important to reconsider carefully in advance. Or it may be that a very young child is unable to fully understand how to treat an animal properly, would be rough with it or irritated at having to look after it and would take his/ her frustrations out on it. Animals have very few ways of protecting themselves; their options tend to be biting, snarling and scratching which then result in the pet being punished. Education is important and it might be useful, prior to pursuing the pet route, to volunteer at an animal shelter, borrow someone else's pet to walk and look after or even sponsor something exotic at the nearest zoo and then visit regularly. There are even virtual pets that demand attention and regularly remind their owner of their presence. A child may soon realise that they're not that interested in having a pet longterm. One of these options might be a more viable alternative, at least at first.

Snow, Ice And Father Christmas Lapland isn’t all about kids seeing Father Christmas. Many ‘big kids’ will enjoy experiencing the sheer magic and wonder of the Arctic Circle. Those who habitually book an air ticket to tick one more item off the bucket list will find a trip to Lapland ticks off, not just one or two, but over a dozen lifetime experiences all in one go. The air is clear, the sky sparkles with a myriad of stars and the snow-filled landscape seduces you into thinking this is paradise. It’s the kind of place that will blow your mind from the moment you arrive. Rolling hills, dense forests, lakes, log cabins and, in winter time, lots and lots of snow. Touching down in Northern Finland we were greeted by a stunning view of the snowy wilderness and pine forests disappearing, or so it seemed, into infinity. With the thermometer heading down to -12 degrees Celsius we were thankful that we’d come prepared with plenty of layers, a thick ski jacket, gloves and a hat. With most Lapland trips your tour operator will provide Arctic overalls to keep you warm.

18

There are many day trips to Lapland from the UK. Fly there, meet father Christmas, take in the sights, fly back. But why not extend your stay to a few nights and experience all that this fantastic region has to offer at a more leisurely pace. You can sleep in an igloo, ride on a reindeer sleigh, play with huskies, toboggan down ice slides, walk on a frozen ocean, marvel at the elusive Northern Lights, and even float in water with icebergs for company. So many things to do, so many choices. Meeting Father Christmas in his true Lapland home is an experience your children will treasure for ever – and you will always remember the magical look upon their faces. You travel by sleigh deep into the pine forest until you pull up at his log cabin where you’ll have your private meeting with him. A far cry from the queues for a curtained-off area in a remote corner of a department store or shopping mall.

' Lapland is a snow paradise full of activities to take part in and, perhaps, take you back to the days of uninhibited childhood ' Once you’ve exhausted yourself by playing in the snow, giggled at the little elves in the village and hugged snowmen, head off to Kotahovi Restaurant in Santa Claus Village for a warming meal. The restaurant is housed in a traditional Lappish wooden hut, the roaring fire is comforting and made us feel immediately cosy. Lapland is a snow paradise full of activities to take part in and, perhaps, take you back to the days of uninhibited childhood. Snow-mobiling, a hair-raising ride on a husky sled, or a magical reindeer sleigh ride silently swishing along a winding candle-lit path through the forest,

the smell of pine tantalising your nostrils. My favourite has to be the husky rides. These amazing dogs, so strong and hardworking, yapping at the apparent pleasure of pulling their charges. A thoroughly magical and thrilling experience for the whole family. And you’re in perfectly safe hands as the experts steer your sled for you. All in all Lapland is a truly wonderful destination for both children and grown-up children. Somewhere that everyone needs to visit at least once in a lifetime.

Baby Scans What Are The Differences? 2D/3D/4D and now HDLive?? So your pregnant and your keen to see the different stages of your baby with a private baby scan. What is the difference between 2D, 3D, 4D and HD Live? 2D is the standard black and white which you will see at all of your hospital scans. Some mums and dads find this to be a little disappointing as you are limited to what you can see, and if you are not a qualified sonographer, will find it hard to understand what part of baby you are looking at.

2D

3D Scans show still images of your baby in three dimension. The ultrasound machine will translate the scan information to give a realistic 3D image. 3D Hands, feet and face become real and you get to see how baby looks. 4D scans show moving 3D imagery of your baby. They allow you to meet your baby and see all their little features before they arrive into the world. From ears to nose to their tiny fingers and toes the experience is something extremely special that you and the whole family can treasure. HDLive is the latest technology, with higher spec equipment your baby becomes even more realistic. Toning is given to the image and it is described a like putting a light on your baby to reveal what they currently look like. Most parents (and even grandparents) are amazed by the images that this can give.

HD Live

The experts say the best time for a 3D/4D/HDLive scan is from 26 weeks to 34 weeks. However, if you want to gage what baby looks like in 3D check out this fun but informative link: https://windowtothewomb.co.uk/how-big-is-baby/

Pregnancy Sickness Support Nausea and vomiting affects around 80% of all pregnant women at some point during their pregnancy. The more common experience of intermittent nausea and vomiting leads to the general belief that this should be manageable. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Many women experience more severe sickness, with more than 30% needing time off work to cope with their symptoms and 35% experiencing symptoms which are of clinical significance in terms of either physical or mental health. For 1.5% of pregnancies (approx. 10,500 per year), this can lead to a diagnosis of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) characterised by vomiting sometimes up to 30 times a day, dry retching and continuous severe nausea. As a result normal functioning becomes very difficult and women struggle to maintain adequate food and fluid intake. This often leads to dehydration, weight loss and even hospitalisation. Quality of life is affected completely: women are often bed or housebound, unable to eat, drink, read, watch TV or cope with bright lights, and cannot look after themselves properly. Severe pregnancy sickness and HG also have other impacts. Over 1,000 wanted pregnancies, complicated by HG, are terminated due to a lack of support and treatment. The condition causes extreme fatigue and a loss of self-worth. 22

Sufferers commonly report feeling alone, confused and unable to access the treatment they need from doctors and midwives. The lack of understanding by healthcare professionals and the public gives rise to poor mental health, with many sufferers developing depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. In-turn, this can lead to marriage problems, loss of employment and family breakdowns. According to research, over 80% of women with HG reported that HG caused a negative psychosocial impact. Pregnancy Sickness Support is the only UK charity offering support to women suffering from severe pregnancy sickness and HG. The charity offers support and information to sufferers, their families & friends, employers and health care professionals to improve care, treatment and understanding. For further information on the condition or the work of the charity visit: www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk or email: info@pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

8 Reasons To Book A Photoshoot For Your Beautiful Baby

© Jess Wilkins

Booking a baby photoshoot may not be ‘essential’ but it certainly can be an important and emotive way to capture memories of your baby’s beautiful first few weeks and growing milestones. A photoshoot is certainly an investment, but in a world where smartphone snaps have become the norm, it takes a professional touch to create image that stand the test of time. As a mother and a professional baby photographer I can see both sides of the coin, so here are my top reasons to book a newborn photoshoot for your baby. Your baby changes so quickly. Professional images will represent your new baby perfectly at each time, capturing them as they are. Whether you book a newborn shoot to capture your baby when they’re tiny or at around 6 months when they are at the newly sitting up stage with their great gummy smiles, or at the their toddling and talking stage, your photographer will capture these details… these precious moments you cannot get back. The images will freeze that moment in time, your baby just as they are. You can look back at these portraits and be transported back to that day.

The shoot often includes time for photos of the baby with parents. You can be in some of the images with your baby instead of being the one taking them. Mum and dad are usually the ones hiding behind the camera, with a photoshoot you can get in front for a change and have some beautiful photos taken as family. Images of family portraits have been proven in a study to boost a child’s self esteem. How lovely will it be for them to see a big family framed image on the wall as they grow. Your photographer can provide you with high quality products to showcase your baby’s images. How many of us plan to print images and frame them, or create a baby photo album and actually get round to it? Not many! Most photographers sell top quality products to suit your home and personal style. This can take the stress and time out of organising and ordering physical products . “I am very conservative about self-esteem and I think placing a family photo someplace in the home where the child can see it every day without having to turn on a device or click around on a computer to find it really hits home for that child this sense of reassurance and comfort.” Krauss.

I thought I’d photograph my baby son myself rather than booking a professional. I had a photoshoot for my bump but really believed I could do it myself . 4 weeks after he was born, I had taken some snaps but nothing that really took away the clutter of my house and gave me that wow factor! I was too overwhelmed with other clients to really think about my own newborn shoot. A professional will plan, take their time with your baby to ensure you have images to cherish, and we have lots of patience. 24

My son would dribble lots with teething and often get a little rash. Your photographer can edit things (within reasons) that are not usually there. For example, baby ache, rashes and bruises on knees - a common one for newly walking children. I am a firm believer in keeping babies as they are. But editing can enhance an image. Photo shopping out a bruised knee that may have drawn the eye away from their gorgeous cherub face is worth the investment. What is more than fun than watching someone else take photos of your gorgeous baby? Especially if it is a cake smash! Most photographers will use a local baker and we tidy all the mess up. Booking a photoshoot for a birthday cake smash means it is all organised. A professional will have worked lots with babies of all ages and know what they like, make it fun and know how to get the best from them whatever their age. Parents sit back and relax! Often parents come along wishing they had booked a shoot sooner or with their first child but you should try not to have any regrets. A photoshoot is an investment, it ensures you have professional quality images of your baby and family whatever age you book it. Baby portraits last a life time! © Jess Wilkins

Where Did Your Grandparents Sleep? I decided to write this blog after following yet another rant on a mummy page about unhelpful comments from a well meaning relative. Sleep, baby sleep to be more precise, is big business and a massive part in any new parents life. Many new parents have heard how hard it is when a baby arrives,

but then have preconceived ideas about when a baby should sleep through the night.* At 3 months of age 46% of babies wake regularly at night, at 6 months 39% of babies are regularly waking during the night and by 9 months this has risen, yes risen, to 58% of babies waking regularly at night, whilst at 12 months, 55% of babies are still regularly waking at night (Scher, 2001). Looking at these statistics, is it any wonder that parents will try almost anything to help their babies, and them, get a better nights sleep? One such “tool many parents use, often by accident, is bedsharing. A little clarification here, cosleeping is sharing the same room, bedsharing is exactly that, sharing the same bed with your baby or child. But why is it perceived with such horror by so many people? Firstly of course, is the fear of something going wrong. Heartbreaking stories of babies being rolled on, falling off the bed or found at the foot of the bed under the covers were not helped by NICE and healthcare providers, who, until recently, would not even talk about it.

Instead preferring to tell you just don’t do it. Not helpful when often exhausted parents end up bedsharing, or worse, sofa sharing when they just can’t take another sleepless night. Thankfully now NICE have changed their guidelines, more information is now getting out there for parents about how to bedshare in the safest way. You can find out more here: https://www.dur.ac.uk/resources/isis. online/pdfs/ISIS_bed-sharing_2014.pdf Secondly, is the seemingly unrelenting pressure for our children to be independent. No one wants to be that parent, first day of reception class when you suddenly find you have a limpet not a child! Our own well -meaning parents, aunts and uncles, will tell us not to keep cuddling our babies. Let them cry for a bit, it never did you any harm. You will make a rod for your own back if you keep picking that baby up. Never ever share your bed, they will never leave it! And lots more besides. But where did your Grandparents sleep? If they are anything like mine they came from a big family. On my mother’s side of the family, her mum was one of 7 children. Did her parents have a large 8 bedroom house? Of course not. Top and tail in a single bed was

very common years ago, with the new baby being kept very close to mum all the time and if not mum, then an aunty or close family friend. None of this having your own nursery, to be left by yourself from an early age. Research shows that before independence must come dependence. If children have a secure base then they will feel much more confident going out into the big wide world. How do we give them this secure base? By being there, cuddling, holding, bedsharing if it works for you and generally being empathic towards how they feel at a young age. Gentle parenting. Extended g n i d e e f t s Brea It can’t be denied that breastfeeding is something that’s very important for a baby’s nutrition and development, it’s a normal way of feeding a baby and compared to formula feeding, is always going to be superior in terms of nutritional content. Between 2005 and 2010 the breastfeeding rates in the UK at birth rose by 5% from 76% to 81%, which on the face of it seems extremely high. It’s only when we look into the longevity that we see just how poor breastfeeding rates are in the UK, compared to the rest of the world. At 6 week - 24% At 12 weeks - 17% At 4 months - 12% At 6 months - 1% Longevity of breastfeeding in the UK is low and sadly 0.5% of mothers are breastfeeding at 1 year of age, compared to 27% in the US, 35% in Norway, 44%in New Zealand and 92% in India. There is no doubt that cultural expectations have a huge role in this. Extended breastfeeding is a phrase often used to describe a child who is breastfeeding beyond 1 year, however, it’s worth noting that the World Health Organisation (WHO) state: ‘Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond’.

28

Yet breastfeeding beyond 6 months is often frowned upon and even described as ‘strange’, ‘wrong’ and with mothers left feeling embarrassed to follow guidelines and allow their child to wean when ready. A hotly debated topic, many scientist and professionals agree that biologically, weaning should occur around the time a child would naturally lose their milk teeth. Something that is not practised in the UK. There are however, a group of women who are very vocal about extended breastfeeding and thankfully are not ashamed to allow their children the freedom to choose for themselves when they wean from the breast. Locally in Norfolk we have a great supportive community of extended breast feeders who offer a huge amount of moral support and advice to other mothers. Here are some of the things they feel about breastfeeding. “I think it’s a cure all! Bumps, tumbles, tantrums, ‘Not-Fairs’, over-tired, poorly,

full-of-cold, go-to-sleep, calm-down, connecting-after-a-busy-day snuggles boobie is the answer! I’m so reliant on it in my parenting and it’s successful that I don’t know what I’d do without boobie”. - Shelley and 34 months old daughter. “Nursing a baby, and then a child, is not simply about providing nutrition. It’s a deep, nuanced relationship, a biological, psychological and emotional bond that doesn’t expire past certain date, but changes over time till it no longer includes the act of breastfeeding but retains that closeness. Nursing older child may seem hard to embrace for many, but these children were once newborn babies, and every day they become just a day older. We don’t suddenly begin to nurse three or five year olds; they simply get older as we nurse them. My boys are two and five; while our journey with my eldest slowly comes to an end, I hope for my youngest to nurse as long as he needs, be it a couple of years or more.” - Agnieszka and tandem feeders aged 3 and 5 years.

It’s more than food, it’s comfort, it’s security.

“She still needs it - for me it’s that simple, her immune system needs it, her body clock needs it to help her slow down at the end of the day. It’s her safe haven. Losing my milk supply during pregnancy has really shown me how much she needed both the milk and the nursing relationship.” - Connie and 26 months old daughter. “I never started out to feed until my son was 4 years old, it just happened. I decided as he got older I would allow him to wean when he was ready, which coincided with him turning 4 and starting school. I talk to my son about his memories of breastfeeding and they are always happily relayed to me in a very animated way. It’s a memory we will both cherish.” - Renee and son 4 years old. “I never ever planned to do this, but as time goes by I realise more and more it is the most obvious, natural thing to be doing. Sometimes it drives me bonkers, but it rescues more situations than it challenges.” - Louise and daughter 39 months. “My son is very active and doesn’t sit still for 5 minutes, so it’s lovely to have that time to reconnect and have cuddles with him, especially when I get home from work.” Jess and 1-year-old son. Whatever your choice for your child, whether it be formula feeding from birth or breast feeding a 5-year-old, we should all agree, it’s the parents’ choice and we should celebrate their choice at every opportunity. Why Is Sensory, Music And Dance Important For My Child’ Development?

From the day they are born, children are designed to learn about the world by using their five sense; touching, tasting, smelling, seeing and hearing. This is why babies and toddlers touch everything and put it in their mouths and why they make funny noises and experiment with different sounds. Sensory play can be anything from playing in sand and water tables, with play dough, singing songs, moving to music, playing with a floating scarf, a reassuring smell and even a simple cuddle. All of these activities encourage brain development by stimulating the senses; it sends signals to the brain that help strengthen neural pathways important for all types of learning. For example, playing in sand is exploring the sense of touch, which lays the foundations for learning other skills such as identifying objects, developing fine motor skills and enhancing their knowledge of language by talking about what they are doing, is it hot or cold, hard or soft etc.

30

Movement and dancing is a non-verbal response for children who do not yet have language ability. The vestibular system (part of the ear related to balance and movement) must be activated for learning to take place. All learning in the first 15 months of life is centred on the vestibular system (Hannaford, 1995) Movement strengths the vestibular system and helps the brain to be ready for learning. Swinging your babies backwards and forwards is great stimulation of the Vestibular. Music and singing songs has countless benefits, including expressing emotions, developing listening skills and aiding concentration, improves basic speech patterns, widens vocabulary, stimulates children’s creativity and curiosity, helps in mastering fine and gross motor skills to mention just a few. Activities such as clapping to music and jumping in time to the beat stimulates brain function and helps the brain to organise thoughts and behaviours. Using different props can really help develop gross motor skills. Playing with pompoms is fun activity and great gross motor skills for toddlers. Babies use visual tracking watching the pompoms and this promotes focusing ability

and helps eyes work together as a team, a crucial skill in learning to read. Dancing with scarves, moving them from one side to the other is another key activity to help your child’s development. Cross lateral movement is necessary for the brains development and the fusing of neuron pathways. It enables the brain to cross the mid-section, which is really important for learning to read and write. Using scented Bubbles with music is one of the best forms of sensory play, they can stimulate all five senses, hearing - from listening to the music, touching - You can encourage your toddler to use pincer movements to catch the bubbles, this fine motor skill exercises a muscle in the brain used for higher-level thinking. Seeing - as they watch the bubbles, smelling - as they smell the fragrance and tasting - as they catch them in their mouths. This active learning stimulates and involves more parts of the cerebral cortex, producing stronger long term memory. After an experience like this, the entire brain is awake and waiting to be filled! (Schillier, 1999) Our Beebops Sensory music and Dance classes incorporate all of these things and more. All our classes adhere to the Early Years Foundation stages and we aim give your child the best start in life by learning through play. As well as the many benefits to your baby or toddler they are also great fun for you, enabling you to meet other parents, and release some happy hormones (endorphins and oxytocin) as you sing, dance and play and help to develop your little ones and most

importantly spend some quality and fun one on one time with them. For more information about our classes please see our website: www.beebopsltd.co.uk email: enquiries@beebopsltd.co.uk or find us on facebook: www.facebook.com/beebopsltd
