Making Christmas Special for the People We Support
As the Christmas countdown approached, celebrations took place across our charity to make it a special time of year for the people we support.
Big Lottery-funded Youth and Family Centre 'Meet Up' in Thetford held their annual Christmas party and the whole community was invited to join in. With a disco, plenty of games and

refreshments, around 70 children and their parents had a brilliant time with Meet Up staff describing it as "the best place in the world to be!"
Young Carers groups across the charity held their own celebrations. Young carers are children and young people up to the age of 18, whose lives are affected by caring for someone in their family who has a long-term illness or disability, mental health problem, learning disability, or who misuses alcohol or drugs. The 2011 census suggests that in Norfolk there are approximately 2,000 young carers.
Our groups provide a safe, supportive environment for young carers so they can let their hair down, make friends, play, socialise and forget their adult responsibilities for a while. For the Norwich North Young Carers Group their Christmas get-together was no exception, with lots of games and a turkey dinner. Presents that had been donated by the public through our Christmas Gift Appeal were also given out and a good time was enjoyed by all!
“A Beautiful House of Nannies and Grandads� Children from Town Tots Pre-School in North Walsham have recently been enjoying getting out and about in their community with visits to a local care home. Groups of up to six three-year-olds at a time from Town Tots have been meeting the ladies and gentleman of Rose Meadow. They have played games, such as skittles and hoopla, and enjoyed a snack together as part of the new scheme, which has brought much delight to both parties.
There has also been plenty for our young people to talk about following the visits, which bring mutual benefits to both groups, including improving memory, strength and general wellbeing, with one young person describing the care home as "a beautiful house of Nannies and Grandads". Following a successful trial, Town Tots hopes to continue with monthly visits to engage the two groups and bridge an intergenerational gap. The Garage Launches Its New Spring Season Of Events 2018
The Garage has launched its Spring season of events featuring a varied selection of productions, some of which have been partly made by professional performers in The Garage studios. For those looking for love in the new year the season kicks off with Kaleido Film Collective and Feral Foxy Ladies’ I Would Like to Get to Know You, a cabaret-esque collection of real life dating stories. Local talent can be found in INK on the Road featuring the best new short plays from prolific East Anglian writers performed at the INK Festival, and fEAST Theatre’s latest offering takes us to Morston, North Norfolk in World War II, in an adaptation of Jeremy Page’s, Salt. The season gets serious with unflinching drama; house theatre’s Growing Pains follows a working-class lad who travels down a dangerous road, Gypsy Queen from Hope Theatre Company tells the unconventional love story between two fighters who discover the greatest challenge lies outside the ring, and The Garage Youth Theatre Company present a National Theatre Connections performance, The Changing Room, a lyrical piece about existing on the cusp of growing up. The season also features ThisEgg presenting Me and My Bee, where Josie and her pals
ask you to bring your family to join the Bee Party, to 20 Questions presented by Unit which has been co-created with some of The Garage’s participants, Foursquare Theatre’s production of Half a World Away which, as the title suggests, is a nostalgic trip back to the 90s in a rural community. Plus, there’s cutting edge comedy with John Kearns, Tanyalee Davis and The M.M.O.R.P.G Show. If you are looking to take up a new hobby in the New Year, The Garage have added more adult dance and fitness classes during the day and at lunchtimes, including Burlexercise and Kettlercise, with more of the popular Ballet Basics classes as an introduction to dance. This is alongside the popular ever-expanding dance, music and theatre class programme for all ages, term starts Thursday 11 January. The Study at The Garage programme continues, including extracurricular GCSEs running on a Sunday. Modern Dance Company To Unveil Newest Piece In World Premiere For Norwich RICHARD ALSTON DANCE COMPANY – February 2 & 3, 2018 Richard Alston Dance Company is an avidly followed UK dance company with some of the world’s most talented contemporary dancers, and it returns with a full programme of works including a brand-new piece by associate choreographer Martin Lawrance which will receive its world premiere at the Theatre Royal on Friday 2 February. In Cut and Run, Martin Lawrance takes his inspiration from contrasting music by two contemporary classical composers, Damian Legassick and Michael Gordon, from the Icebreaker album Terminal Velocity. Fast frenetic rhythm with a cool sombre undertone takes the dancers into a world of shadow and swift dodges. Martin Lawrance, who hails from Leicester, danced with the Richard Alston Dance Company from 1995 to 2007 and had over 25 works created on him before turning his talents to choreography. He is recently returned to the UK following a sabbatical working in the Philippines with Ballet Manila founder and artistic director Lisa Macuja-Elizalde to choreograph her vision of a modern-day Spartacus. A brand-new piece by Richard Alston will also be performed. Carnaval is danced to Schumann’s beautiful and evocative piano solo of the same name and revolves around the complicated personality of the composer. Carnaval had its world premiere at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, on Friday 22 September 2017. Inspired by the life and relationships of Robert Schumann, two dancers depict the dual aspects of the composer’s personality (he struggled with mental illness), showing his wife, Clara, struggling to love both sides.
The dance sees couples waltzing in masked flirtation, responding to the stunning and complex score played live onstage by pianist Jason Ridgway, while costumes are by BAFTA Award winning designer Fotini Dimou who previously worked on Alston’s An Italian in Madrid and Illuminations. The third piece will be Gypsy Mixture, a great Alston favourite, which has been newly-revived for the first time in a decade. It will move the pace up a notch taking its tempo from the music of Electric Gypsyland, which has its roots in flamenco mixing Roma music with techno mixed by DJs and artists from Chile to Frankfurt. With exhilarating dancing full of leaps and shimmies played out to the infectious music of Romanian and Macedonian gypsy bands, it is a dance to lift the spirits and quicken the pulse. Judy Foster, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “The 2018 visit by Richard Alston Dance Company brings another diverse programme showing off the company’s versatility and dynamic dance skills and is guaranteed to set some sizzle into the cold winter months. A Murderous Game
GALLOWGLASS - February 20-24, 2018 An atmospheric thriller from the pen of Ruth Rendall (writing as Barbara Vine) will set spines a-tingling when it comes to the stage at Norwich Theatre Royal from February 20 to 24. Gallowglass is presented by The Middle Ground Theatre Company who earlier this year brought A Murder Is Announced before Norwich audiences. Ruth Rendell’s novel was described as “Marvellously gripping...tense, compulsive and beautifully written” by the Sunday Express, and as “compulsive reading; an unsettling narrative that casts eerie shadows into the unknown” by Woman's Journal. The novel was turned into a BBC series in 1993 starring Michael Sheen as Joe and Paul Rhys as Sandor.

Now bringing the story to the stage, Middle Ground’s production stars a host of popular television stars. Paul Opacic is best known for his role as Carl Costello in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks. He also played Steve Marchant in Emmerdale and has enjoyed roles in The Royal, Holby City and Waterloo Road. Joining him is Richard Walsh who played fireman Bert ‘Sicknote’ Quigley in the longrunning ITV drama series London's Burning from 1986 to 2000, and also appeared in Midsomer Murders, Doctors and Heartbeat. The cast is completed by Karen Drury who is best known for her role as Susannah Farnham in Brookside, Dean Smith who played Philip Ryan in Waterloo Road, Florence Cady who played the lead role of Scarlet in the gothic thriller Crucible of the Vampire and Rachael Hart who plays Katie in CBeebies Apple Tree House. Gallowglass tells is an emotional story of obsessive love, lust and fear. Joe is saved from committing suicide in front of an oncoming tube

Happy New Year! We hope you’ve had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas and New Year! January is that time of year that the glossy magazines may tell you to improve yourself, or make changes, but here at Nova we don’t really agree with all that. We like you just the way you are! But January can be a great time to look back over years gone by and see if there are things that can be useful for the brand-new year ahead. These can be anything from memories, boxes hiding in the loft, and of course, your wardrobe. Well, if you’re tempted to create a brand-new look for yourself, why not start by looking through your jewellery box and seeing what can be transformed into new pieces? I bet there are a few single earrings that have long been missing their partners. We all know how difficult it can be to find an exact match, but did you know it can be fairly straightforward (and inexpensive!) to transform these lonely earrings into pendants? Pop into the store and we’ll soon let you know whether we’re able to transform it. Silver is known for tarnishing, and can be a really satisfying job to clean up. A simple solution of bicarb, salt, aluminium foil and hot water will remove the worst any tarnish on plain silver pieces. If you missed our article a couple of months ago detailing how to do this, never fear! We have small cards letting you know what to do available from the shop, just ask! We have two re-stringers in-house, who are able to rejuvenate a number of styles of strung necklaces. People don’t always know that vintage pearls can often be strung on cotton thread, which will degrade over time. It’s always better to have given the necklace a little TLC and potentially be restrung before the thread wears away completely and you’re left with an empty necklace! The beauty of jewellery in precious metals is that it can always be remodelled and given a new lease of life. We’re always happy to talk about how we can re-design a piece to transform a well-loved, but dated piece into something new. So, before you go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, make sure you’ve given all the pieces you already own a good check over first! With love from Nova Silver

So, You Want To Feel Happy? Many people see being happy as their main aim in life. Ask them what they truly want and they'll probably reply, 'to feel happy'. However, I see happiness as a by-product in life, generated by activities and experiences, like a walk-in nature, sitting people-watching in the mall, enjoying someone's company, having a particularly satisfying or successful day. Few of us set off in the morning with happiness as our main aim for the day. When you want to feel happy it starts by appreciating the small things in life. We will often find that those things hold the key to real happiness. A child's laughter or them running over to us with the gift of a crumpled pine cone, a crisp autumnal day, a warm shower, listening to music; all those things which are so easy to take for granted can bring happiness and contentment when we stop and appreciate them.
Be sure to acknowledge your successes, no matter how small or unimportant you may think they are to others. They're a testament to your efforts and as such deserve recognition and acknowledgement. If you're working with a to-do-list be sure to acknowledge all the additional things you do that are not on your list. Give yourself credit for those extras too. A sense of achievement often comes when we've applied ourselves, worked hard and done our best. Even if something doesn't work out as well as we'd hoped that sense of accomplishment can bring its own reward, having tried, pushed ourselves and given it our best shot. We should smile and give ourselves a pat on the back for having had a go, and as such feel happy and proud of ourselves.

A positive attitude is an important element of being happy, where we appreciate what we have and are grateful for it. There is so much in life to be grateful for but we can often lose sight of the good fortune we have, especially if we're tempted to compare our lives to other people's in an unfavourable way. Remember that many people would feel blessed to be in our shoes. Balance in life is also important. Constant partying and fun might seem like the dream, but if we ate cake all the time we'd end up bored, fat and not enjoying cake as much! Find a balance between work, responsibilities and 'me time'. Making an effort first often makes the reward of fun afterwards more meaningful and enjoyable. Belonging, where we can be ourselves, perhaps as part of a group, makes a difference to our happiness levels. Knowing that we're accepted as we are, that we don't have to dress up, continually make an effort or pretend to be something we're not can really allow us to relax and feel happy. Being judged, watched or permanently under scrutiny is a familiar part of many people's everyday lives, so having places which are free from that burden is a big relief. Being involved in charitable works and good acts can make us feel happy, having donated our time, skills or done something selfless. Doing good and helping others can bring a real sense of positivity into our lives, and it's often about the act itself, rather than any recognition we may receive. Our comfort zone can be a happy place for a time, but it's important to leave it occasionally

and explore further afield. Remember to accept opportunities and challenges that come your way, be prepared to scare yourself a little on a reasonably regular basis and avoid becoming too complacent, settled or comfortable. Co-operating on a joint project or venture can bring much happiness and satisfaction into life. Think of a group of people tending a garden, volunteering or even sharing a commitment to exercise regularly or learn a new skill. It can be easier and more sustainable when we're working together, urging each other on, joking as we appreciate how much we've achieved. Afterwards there's often a strong sense of camaraderie, of being part of a winning team, laughing at the failures, retelling anecdotes and in-jokes from the miscellany of adventures along the way, feeling happy at having been a part of the experience. Whilst feeling happy may not be something we can necessarily choose for ourselves there are certainly many ways we can support ourselves and so become more comfortable and contented. It's often then that we smile and realise how happy we're feeling. ‘Dad’s Boats Celebrate Exciting Milestone At London Boat Show 2018
David Williams, designer of UK made Pedal Boats for two, celebrates 50th anniversary of circumnavigation of Isle of Wight A UK luxury Pedal Boat maker is set to exhibit their uniquely designed boats at the London Boat Show 2018 from 11th - 14th January at ExCel, London. This year’s show is ‘re-defined, re-imagined’ and is set ‘to be better than ever’. David Williams (Dad) built his first Pedal Boat in the 1950s. Norfolk based Dad’s Boats is a
family run business manufacturing and selling their latest unique design which allows two people to face each other and pedal forwards in comfort. The sophisticated gearbox makes it efficient, easy to use and environmentally friendly, so you can just sit back, sip a drink, chat and take some gentle exercise while enjoying the water. David’s first Pedal Boat was a single seater and was designed as a way of following his remote-controlled yacht while keeping his hands free for the controls. The drive mechanism was an old hand drill! ‘The Sieve’, as it was affectionately called, was moth balled in the garden not long after when National Service got in the way. In the summer of 1968 David decided to prove that the Pedal Boat really was a vessel that could go places and together with his friend, Peter Buckland, they picked a day during a week’s holiday and despite a very dubious coast guard and a near miss with a fleet of sailing boats at the start of a race, they successfully completed the circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight thus proving the Pedal Boat’s worth! David and his family will be celebrating this very special anniversary at the London Boat Show. Charles Dickens is one of those great writers that deserve their spot on the plinth of historic fame, and an inspiration to fellow modern-day authors like myself. I am now writing the manuscript to Revenge, the third book in my Daniel Jones series of stories and I will have many more to write before I can get anywhere near to him, but I do have one grumble! His wonderful story The Christmas Carol with its brilliant feature character Ebenezer Scrooge. Over Christmas I watched the film of the 1970’s musical adaptation of Christmas Carol. It tugs at your heart strings and does make you want to splash the cash over the festive period. And this is my one gripe with Mr Dickens. The second Monday of January is supposed to be one of the most depressing days of the year as the bills start arriving and for too many households the Christmas festivities will have cost thousands of pounds paid for with credit and debt, and this I blame on Scrooge. Now people could say it was the three wise men bringing their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh and yes this was the start of giving presents, but as I watched the final scenes of the film, after Scrooge had seen the light and was dancing down the street with a cast of hundreds, spending as if money had gone out of fashion, it’s very hard not to get caught up in all the hype, especially when you have children. I try not to get caught up in any type of hype, or the latest craze, but what I do find myself getting caught up in is the holiday attitude. Yes the attitude that lets you sit on the sofa at nine thirty on a Monday night and you get the urge for some Dry Roasted Nuts. Normally this would pass, but you have that festive attitude that says, “bugger it, it’s Christmas, let’s have some nuts.” After a packet of them and then some salted nuts to follow I wish I had been a bit more Scrooge like, and settled for a cup of herbal tea instead. www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author_king PAGE

By the time you read this, Christmas will be over, my clothes will be feeling tighter, and I will have no doubt have lost interest in all of the New Year resolutions I will have earnestly made in the lead up to 2018. Above: Keri Beevis But before I launch myself fully into another new year, I want to first reflect back on 2017. It was a mixed year and, on a personal level, it will remain memorable for three things. It is never easy saying goodbye to someone you are close with and in May 2017 I lost a good friend and work colleague to cancer. Fiona was someone I had known for twenty years and for about the last eight of those we lift shared into the office, so I got to know her pretty well. In some ways we were like chalk and cheese, Fiona always impeccably dressed, while I would roll up in jumpers covered in cat hair, rocking my Jon Bon Jovi circa 1985 hair. ‘You really should make more of an effort,’ she would scold me. ‘You never know who you might bump into.’ In other ways though we were compatible, both loving our cats, our food and our red wine, and we were both homebodies, preferring nights in to going out. I also miss her acerbic wit, and she really was the queen of the put me down lines, which I often found myself on the receiving end of, though it was always good naturedly. Fiona never got to see my completed building work, which finally happened in September. My tiny pad is now completed, the whole house redecorated, and new carpets down. Lessons I learnt in the process were, it is possible to get more paint on yourself than on the wall, my cats aren’t very smart (my front door has moved and three months later Ellie and Lola still haven’t figured out that it leads to the same outside places as before), and, while I might be rubbish at most things DIY, I am pretty good with a Stanley Knife.
So there you go, I excel at cutting stuff up and I write mystery thrillers. I wouldn’t recommend going for a walk in the woods with me. But that does bring me neatly on to the main highlight of my year, which was the release of my third book, The Darkness Beneath. It was launched in December in both Kindle and paperback, and I have to say this is by far my favourite book I’ve written. Unlike my earlier novels, this one is a standalone romantic mystery thriller, and the fantastic early feedback has ended my 2017 on an absolute high. Norwich Mumblings: New Years Resolutions Article by Katrin Oldridge Norwich Mumbler https://norwich.mumbler.co.uk Christmas is over for another year and by now, if you’re anything like me then you’ll have overeaten, over-drunk and generally over indulged for the past few weeks. It’s been crazy in our house as we hosted both sets of grandparents, plus an auntie for the Christmas period. My eldest has taken full advantage of doting family members and tried to consume her body weight in sweets and chocolate. New games and toys have lay strewn about the place and I’ve somehow got to make the house expand to fit it all in. But, the New Year is now upon us and as ever it is the time people start to think of resolutions. I always have the best intentions with my New Year’s resolutions, and they usually revolve around trying to be a better parent, and a vague nod to fitness. This year my resolutions are: • Be better at ‘turning off’. I tend to respond to e-mails or cram in a bit of work while my two girls are quiet rather than enjoying watching them play. I resolve to be better at ‘turning off’ my seemingly endless social media trawling for Mumbler and be truly present. This is particularly important this year as my eldest will be starting school in September and I know I’ll miss spending time with her.

• Get fit. This is an annual resolution which I fear is never truly going to happen BUT, after growing two 9lbs+ babies my stomach and back are crying out for something good to happen, so I have already signed up to some Pilates classes in the hope that signing up might compel me to GO! • Plan for the weekends so that we can spend proper “family time” together doing decent activities. We always have the best intentions but somehow, we rarely get our act together in time to achieve anything great. There are so many great places to visit locally and I want to try to visit more. Not wanting to waste time, I have already begun my quest to see what our county has on offer. Suggestions for places to see and family activities are welcomed. Instagram Following hashtags Instagram have recently rolled out the ability for users to follow #hashtags in the same way that you can follow people. This opens up some great opportunities for both your business and your followers. So firstly, how do you follow a hashtag? It’s quite simple really. Tap a hashtag in an Instagram post. This will display a page containing allure latest posts containing the hashtag. Then just tap the ‘follow’ button, in the same way you’d follower a fellow Instagram user. When you then want to see what’s being said just go to your profile, tap ‘following’ and then you’ll see you have the options of ‘People’ or ‘Hashtags’ to view. Click ‘Hashtags’ and then see a list of all the hashtags you follow, select one and then browse. As described above, you’ll now have hashtag ‘lists’ in much the same way that you can on Twitter. This will enable you to build up the ability to see what’s trending in your chosen area of business and in turn help you to determine what’s popular and what you can then use in your posts to get more interaction. It’s important to know that you can only add hashtags to your own posts and you can’t add more than 30 to an individual post. The addition of hashtag following on Instagram now means that you could potentially use the same searchable hashtag across all social networks, ensuring brand cohesion.
This is particularly important if you take advantage of creating your own brand specific hashtags. Promoting these across all social media and offline materials could really increase brand awareness. If you’re lucky, and obviously depending on the structure of your hashtag, other users could start using it and it could then take on a life of its own like my #bemoresocial hashtag. Don’t be fooled though, this might take time to build up that sort of following and desire in your followers. Remember to do a bit of research before you decide on any brand based hashtag to ensure that, if anyone else is using it, it’s not being used in a negative way. Having your own hashtag is a great way to promote an event, competition, location or product. On Instagram, hashtags can contain numbers but no spaces or special characters. Think careful before you settle on your brand based hashtag as you’ll want to use this regularly and potentially for a number of years. So, there you have a brief overview of the benefits of having the ability to follow hashtags on Instagram. Orbitsound ONE P70W Reviewed
Amazing stereo sound from thin air! Orbitsound was founded by Ted Fletcher, the inventor of Airsound™ technology. Ted has been working for many years as a musician, audio engineer, electronics designer and studio designer, to give the listener a more realistic, more immersive sound experience. These years of experience in the industry led to the release in 2017 of the Orbitsound ONE P70, the world's first multi-orientation speaker, meaning regardless of where you stand, its sound remains the same. The P70W is designed in such a way that it can be shelf or wall-mounted. It has a narrow design (700mm wide x 173mm deep x 77mm high), this allows for comfortably mounting below a flat screen television or on a wall as a 'party' speaker. It's built from wood and steel and can be purchased in matte black, bambo or bone white weighing in a 5.1kg.
Sound is provided by two (front and top) 2" 'Orbitsound MK4 drivers', a Sub-bass low-profile 5.25" driver and 2X2 Airsound Orbitsound MK4 drivers. By positioning the main speakers both front and top mean that sound production is maintains regardless of how the speaker mounted. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth, Optical cable, 3.5mm stereo jack and the Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi feature is the most impressive as it allows streaming of audio from a variety of sources without the loss of quality associated with Bluetooth, effectively allowing for uncompressed playback of music. It also allows for multi-speaker / multi-room playback with perfectly synchronised sound and zero delay. This is achieved by using the Orbitsound Smartphone app (Android and iOS) which supports streaming providers and internet

radio stations and allows you to 'group' sets of speakers to create one virtual speaker. When I was given a demonstration of this at the Orbitsound offices, 3 separate speakers, both wall and shelf mounted were grouped together using the app. I was then asked to close my eyes to try and decide where I thought the sound was coming from. It was unearthly as it sounded like it was coming out of thin air, very impressive! Quite a bit of thought has gone into small details on the P70W with the inclusion of reversible LED information display and Orbitsound badge. This might seem small things, but they count as you really wouldn't want to be showing off your new speaker to friends and have the badge upside down. integrated wall mounting and 200mm VESA bosses and bolts are included to allow you to get going straightaway with unnecessary

visits to AV stores to buy mounting kits. There is also a protective sleeve for the speaker, to protect it when not in use. The speaker also comes with a standard power cord, aux cable, quick-start guide and safety and warranty information, all packaged up in a very smart box. The useful inclusion of a carry handle was helpful too, as I carried a demonstration unit to the train station. At ÂŁ399, the Orbitsound P70W is great value for buyers looking for a richer smoother sound regardless of their position in the room. Applications are now open for artists to apply to be part of a popular sculpture trail which is set to return to Norfolk in 2018.
The site at Raveningham includes an orchard, pond, shrubberies and lawn areas, which provide an array of spaces for artists to respond to.
The Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail annually attracts thousands of visitors to the region to see the work of artists from across the UK.
On site there are a number of attractions on offer with the Ravenous Cafe, East India Trading Company, Cannell Antiques, Helen Howes Textile Artist and other units nearby.
Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts, the event takes place at The Raveningham Centre, ten miles south of Norwich.
In 2017 more than 3,000 visitors visited the trail to see the work of more than 40 artists, generating around £12,000 worth of sales.
The trail is part of ‘Celebrate the Waveney & Blyth 2018’, an annual programme of events that highlight the unique character of the two valleys situated in north Suffolk and south Norfolk.
Curator Sarah Cannell said: “Following the huge amount of work spent getting the site ready for 2017 we now have a fabulous blank canvas to work with for our fifth sculpture trail in the lush countryside at Raveningham, South Norfolk.”
The venue offers a unique location for site specific work and sculpture in the grounds of Castell Farm, a Tudor farmhouse.
“I am so excited to see how artists and makers, either familiar with or new to the site, respond creatively. Often a space can spark a new idea for a piece of work and I feel it is my job to encourage and support each artist to realise their creative vision.”
Both established and up-and-coming artists are encouraged to apply to take part in the 5th Waveney Valley Sculpture Trial which will take place between Friday, August 17 and Sunday, September 16.

New Subaru XV (2018) Review Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist tweeting @carwriteups Subaru’s new XV won’t make you moist with excitement, but it’ll keep you safe and sound on and off-road. I should know. I tested the car in snow-covered Lativa – and didn’t crash once. Oh, I tried. But the excellent all-wheel-drive system employed by the XV thwarted my efforts to have an accident. Crazy? Yes, I am. But car tests can get boring, so why not chuck an XV around stupidly on ice and snow to see what happens? Honestly, the Subaru somehow just plays ball all the time, and its wheels feel like they have spikes digging into the terrain below them. Yes, the grip is that good. The car’s not bad in comfort terms either. It still lacks that premium feel you’d expect to find
in a German machine - and it’s not sexy to look at, but it’s damned impressive to drive. The only thing to wee on the chips of the XV is the whining CVT ‘box. The noise does the old noggin in, but the excellent audio system can drown that out, no problem. The new XV will set you back around £23,000 if you want to buy a basic one, and it’s worth it for the safety factor alone. The solid motor achieved the highest-ever grade in Japan’s newly hardened NCAP assessments, notching up 199.7 out of 208 marks. The new XV also impresses on the roominess front. It has bags of space for front and rear occupants and more than enough room for everyone’s luggage in the boot. You also get that factory-fitted all-wheel drive and Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance.

The latter tech consists of adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking and lane keeping assist. And to help with any off-roading you might want to do, the XV has a substantial 8.7-inches of ground-clearance. The XV’s performance isn’t mind-mashing, but it’s damned decent for a crossover. It’ll do 0-62mph in 10.2 seconds and the top speed is 116mph. Fuel consumption isn’t horrific either, at over 40mpg. The fresh Subaru provides a confident, stable drive on and off-road, with appealing compact proportions for negotiating the overcrowded urban jungle, too. Overall, the Japanese auto-maker’s new XV should do well in 2018, although it’ll never sell as well as rivals, such as SEAT’s Ateca. But Subaru fully acknowledges it’s not the biggest seller in the UK – and it’s cool with that. In some ways, that makes me want to go out and buy an XV now, because it isn’t a car everyone will drive. You might feel the same. Trouble is, then the XV will become ubiquitous. Oh well; can’t win can we, Subaru?

Can it really be 37 years since George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley formed one of the most enduring pop groups of the 80s? In four short years WHAM! sold more than 28 million records, topping the charts with three albums, four number one singles and eleven top ten hits. They featured in the Live Aid concert of 1985 and were the first western pop group to ever tour in China. Their impact and influence on the 80s era and music today really cannot be over-emphasised. The Best of WHAM! Show includes all those hits, a few B side favourites and a couple of early George Michael bonus songs. This brand new concert show stars Craig Webb, performing as George Michael. Craig made his TV debut on Gary Barlow’s talent search Let It Shine, which aired live in February 2017 on BBC1. He made it to the quarter finals, where he performed with BUSTED. Travels In Light The Voice Project Choir
The Voice Project Choir’s new piece explores three very different locations in the same medieval Norwich Street. In the often-dark post-festive weeks, The Voice Project Choir offer to take us on an uplifting multi-venue journey in Norwich that will inspire with the promise of spring to come.
co-director Jon Baker “All the music we will perform will be specially written for the choir.” Inspiration for the show came from a quote from painter Paul Nash “ The divisions we may hold between the waking world and that of the dream are not there; they are porous; in a word, they are not there.”
The 150 voices of the choir, plus soloists and guest musicians will perform Travels in Light, the final part of a trilogy of pieces about sleep, dreaming and waking and the bits in between, on 20 January with three separate performances at 5pm; 7pm and 9pm.

The show is a multi-venue secular performance piece that will be staged in the three very different churches on the city's medieval Princes Street - St George’s Tombland, St Peter Hungate and the United Reformed Church with the choir leading the audience between them.

Dazzling Choreography From Strictly Favourite BRENDAN COLE - JANUARY 28, 2018 He may be out of Strictly Come Dancing for this year, but Brendan Cole’s legion of avid fans can still see the charismatic dance professional in his very own show, All Night Long, which returns to Norwich Theatre Royal on Sunday, January 28, 2018, with performances at 3pm & 7.30pm. Brendan’s latest spectacular production from PMB Presentations visited Norwich earlier this year and returns by popular demand following a successful and critically acclaimed run. Created and hosted by Brendan himself, it takes audiences through a journey encompassing high energy dance, live music, comedy, passion, intimacy and all things ballroom as he is joined on stage by a cast of superbly talented championship dancers and a 13-piece band and singers. On the programme will be an extravagant mix of Latin fever and ballroom magic, choreographed by Brendan and featuring all the Strictly favourites from tantalising Tango to powerful Paso Doble, elegant Foxtrot to breath-taking Waltz, performed to the songs of great music legends and exciting contemporary artists - and there will be a few surprises in store too. During the current run of Strictly Come Dancing, Brendan and his celebrity partner Charlotte Hawkins were voted of off three weeks ago, although he will continue to appear in the set dance pieces where all the professional dancers dance together.
In addition to Natasha, his partners have included Kelly Brook; Lisa Snowdon; Jo Wood; Victoria Pendleton, Sunetra Sarker; Kirsty Gallacher; Sophie Ellis-Bextor; and pop star Anastacia. Brendan has presented eight concert tours -Live & Unjudged (in 2010, twice in 2011 and again in 2012), Licence to Thrill (in 2013 & 2015) and A Night To Remember (in 2015 & in 2016), leading to his 9th tour with All Night Long.
He is one of only two professionals to have competed in the entire Strictly Come Dancing TV series - the other being Anton du Beke – and has just completed his 15th year on the show. He danced the very first dance on the first show and was the first winner to lift the famous glitter ball trophy with his ‘celebrity’ partner Natasha Kaplinsky.
