The Benjamin Foundation Town Tots: Building Intergenerational Community Links Since 2017, Rose Meadow residential care home, on the outskirts of North Walsham, has played host to visits by the children of The Benjamin Foundation Town Tots pre-school. Now, several months into the initiative to bring generations together, the benefits for both parties are clear to see.

“It’s just really nice to see the children,” one resident of Rose Meadow says. “We enjoy their company. They’re very good. They like playing with puzzles when they’re here - they’re great fun.” Managed by Norse Care, Rose Meadow welcomed the opportunity to strengthen community links. Now their lounge is filled with colouring books, games and jigsaw puzzles ready for the monthly visits by Town Tots.

Town Tots Early Years Practitioner Emma Brown says, “Our visits to Rose Meadow mix the generations and it really works. Everybody looks forward to it and it builds links within our community, which is part of the Early Years Foundation Stage that we work to." With one young person describing Rose Meadow as “a beautiful house of Nannies and Grandads”, the regular excursions are also having a positive impact on the lives of the children from Town Tots pre-school. Emma continues, “It’s an amazing experience for the children; it offers them insight and understanding, for example, they now understand that the frames they see at Rose Meadow help people to walk.”

Amelia Perriss, Manager of Rose Meadow, says, “Building intergenerational links within our community is incredibly important. It’s great to see our residents’ faces light up and see them engaging and interacting with the little ones. It supports their wellbeing and brings a smile to their faces.” Learn more about Town Tots pre school: https://benjaminfoundation.co.uk/town-tots

New Maternity Assessment Unit At NNUH

Midwifery staff in the New Maternity Assessment Unit.

A host of local companies and the N&N Hospital charity have helped to fund a new MacLeod Maternity Assessment Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, which will benefit hundreds of local pregnant women and their babies each year. The new three-bay unit is situated next to the delivery suite at the hospital and sees about 30 -50 women each week to carry out extra monitoring, where needed, or perform tests such as glucose monitoring to detect gestational diabetes for mums-to-be. Ann Walker, Acting Head of Midwifery, says: “Having a dedicated space has enabled us to speed up the assessment service for women and reduce the busy feel on delivery suite where the assessments would previously have taken place. We wanted to improve the patient experience as some women may need several visits to be assessed during their pregnancy. Louise Cook, N&N Fundraising Manager, says: “The N&N Hospital charity funds a range of improvements for patients and we welcome all the contributions which have helped us buy equipment and convert some of the rooms next to delivery suite to create the new unit.” The following organisations helped with donations to the Maternity Assessment Unit: MacLeod family, The Sunshine Ladies, A and E Motors, The Assembley House, Dialhouse, Reepham, Dolly & Belles Vintage Tea Party, Dotty Pottery, Dunston Hall, Middletons, Gnaw, Norfolk Gin, Figbar, Adnams, Jarrolds, History Mystery, Norwich Porridge, Kettle Chips, Imagine Spa. A Plastic-Free Future For Floral Arrangements Paper replaces the cellophane. Even existing card holders made from plastic can be replaced by an alternative crafted from bamboo.

A Norfolk funeral director is reducing the amount of plastic used in floral arrangements by offering fully biodegradable memorial wreaths and tributes as an option. Rosedale Funeral Home has teamed up with local florist and grower Gabriel’s Garden to provide the service after seeing all the media coverage about plastic reduction and thinking about what they could do to contribute. Although the flowers themselves can often be composted, some contain pesticides that make this unsuitable. Wreaths and arrangements are normally set in floral foam, which takes many years to biodegrade, if at all, and plastic cellophane is used to wrap bouquets. However, there are other materials that can be used that allows the entire arrangement to be composted. The toxic foam traditionally used can be replaced by using moss blocks secured with biodegradable copper wire. Recycled moulded cardboard and willow whips are used to create wreaths of all shapes and sizes that can either be composted or become a lasting tribute. And planters made of moss and filled with seasonal native flowers can be planted at the grave for a long lasting and natural memorial.

Anne Beckett-Allen, director of Rosedale Funeral Home, said: “We are committed to reducing the amount of plastic and non-recyclable materials we use generally as a company. I think many people will be surprised at just how many floral arrangements can’t be composted so we believe that offering this option to our clients is a real positive step for the environment.” “Most crematoria have composting facilities available owing to the large gardens that they maintain, but almost all of the flowers go into landfill, still attached to their plastic containers. Many of our families are also requesting greener funerals for their loved ones and whilst we can offer wicker coffins and green transport we haven’t until now been able to provide a fully sustainable option.” Gabrielle Reid, from Gabriel’s Garden, said: “We grow our flowers and foliage without the use of chemicals and pesticides. Our aim is to reduce the use of floral foam and plastics within the floristry business. There is a growing nationwide movement of eco-friendly florists who are committed to using alternative methods and products, ensuring the wreaths and arrangements look just as good, if not better, using more environmentally friendly materials.” “Many people are more conscious about reducing their use of plastic and appreciate our locally grown flowers. We’re passionate about sustainability and welcome the opportunity to play our part in making our natural products look their best without harming the environment.”

Norwich Company Funds Big C Cancer Research Project

Pictured above (Left to right) Prof. Colin Cooper, Carolyn Sexton Big C chairman, Dr Dan Brewer, Alan Boswell, Dr Chris Bushby

Leading independent insurance brokers and financial planners, Alan Boswell Group has given £50,000 towards a Big C funded cancer research project being undertaken at the Norwich Research Park in Norfolk. This is in addition to the group raising £15,000 in 2017 for the Norfolk and Waveney based charity. Dr Dan Brewer will work with Professor Colin Cooper to research and discover new sub-types of cancer. Understanding these sub-types of the disease is important to help predict survival, inform treatment options and suggest new drug treatment strategies to improve the lives of those affected by cancer. Dr Chris Bushby, Chief Executive at Big C, said, “We are extremely grateful to the board of directors at Alan Boswell Group for their commitment and partnership in this significant cancer research project, which will benefit those affected by cancer locally and far beyond.

It is a fantastic example of a corporate organisation pledging their involvement and financial backing to help accelerate the progress of cancer research and enhance our understanding to better prevent and treat the disease. We would welcome approaches from any other organisations interested in this area of support.” Group Executive Chairman Alan Boswell, comments: “Everyone has a story about somebody close to them who has been affected by this disease. We’re extremely proud to help support the amazing research undertaken right here in East Anglia.” Big C has a long-standing partnership with Alan Boswell Group, which has seen the company raise nearly £100,000 over the past 20 years for those locally affected by cancer. BOUDICCHARE REVEALED

Issue 62 2018

The Friends Of Iceni Reveal BoudiccHare On Thursday May 17, during the monthly Norfolk ‘TweetUp’, the Friends of Iceni gathered to reveal a very special warrior - BoudiccHare. The East Anglian warrior queen of the ancient Norfolk Iceni tribe is sponsored by The Friends of Iceni, a collective of 18 local independent businesses. Martin Green, Project Manager from the GoGoHares, said, ‘The Iceni Collective are brilliant for our trail as they are all so prolific on social media, which in turn helps their networking using their character as a point of reference. Having a team of so many, this tribe will surely be one to watch!’ The Friends of Iceni, returning sponsors from GoGoDragons 2015, chose artist Helen L. Smith, who also designed and painted their popular GoGo King Tut. Colin Jeffery, Director of Iceni Magazine, said, “Huge thanks to our wonderful artist Helen L Smith for realising our vision so perfectly! It’s been a pleasure to have her on board once again.” Colin Jeffery explained the inspiration behind this GoGoHare: “The name for our hare was

an obvious choice, but the design was intended to turn the famous story of ‘Queen Boudicca releasing a hare from her gown’ on its head, with the hare being the carrier of Boudicca instead. Legend has it that Boudicca released a hare from the folds of her garment and whichever way it ran, was a sign showing her the direction to invade. Mr Jeffery added, “We would like to urge anyone who takes part in this year’s trail to share photos of themselves with BoudiccHare on social media in support of this exciting charity event.” The team behind this sculpture can be found actively tweeting in the realms of #norfolkhour Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8.30 - 9.30pm and the hare will be no exception with the twitter handle of @boudicchare. Is Your Child ‘School Ready’? A number of parents are now choosing to ‘defer’ their child's entry into school (legally a child doesn’t have to be in education until the term after their 5th birthday - for some children this can be when they are in year 1). The number of parents/guardians requesting to defer a school start has risen by 84% between 2015 and 2017 according to the DFE (Department for Education) statistics. Many parents don't feel their child is ready for school. You may have chosen to apply to send your child into full-time education in September and be wondering if you have made the right decision. You may also keep hearing the term ‘school readiness’. This is a term used to describe when a child is ready for school. However, a child is not necessarily expected to do all of these

before starting school, but should be working towards achieving them. You will also find that there are many definitions of school readiness with no definitive answer as to what it is, and it is really important to remember that each child learns in different ways and at different times. Many parents think it is important to have their child know colours, shapes, numbers, letters etc but from talking to reception teachers, working in childcare and seeing a number of children, the general feeling is that the most important skills are confidence, self-help skills and social skills. A general guide is that children who are preparing for school can: * Mostly get dressed and undressed on their own (and working towards buttons)

* Have the confidence to communicate their needs eg. toilet, hunger, feeling unwell * Be able to separate from their parent/carer * Be able to wash and dry their hands * Be able to toilet independently (or with minimal support) * Understand and follow age-appropriate boundaries and instructions * Take turns, interact appropriately and share with others * Sit and listen for short periods of time * Express their thoughts and ideas through their vocabulary * Focus on, and be interested in, actvities

I will always remember on our daughter's first day at school, I asked her teacher if they prefer them to know their letters etc and she said “Please, no. We do all that in reception, but it is easier for us to teach them the right way, than have to undo it when they have been taught an old way. The most important skills they can have from home are independence and socialisation skills”.

The rest will follow. Of course, if they can already do the above it can be advantageous to recognise some numbers and letters or be able to write their name, but in reception they will learn these things.

Thanks for reading! Becca

The picture above is available in full size from www.nurseryresources.org We will be posting on our blog soon in more detail about each of the expectations for being “school ready” and will also share links to each of the posters available!

The Diary of a Norfolk Family By Mark King

Above: Mark King

The first bank holiday of the year was a surprise. Monday evening sitting on Eccles Beach with the sun beating down as it gently settled in the distance with the shoreline to ourselves except for the occasional dog walker, and it was just heavenly.

We had a small barbecue firing away with a mixture of sausages and burgers sizzling on top while a small trail of smoke wafted into the air. My daughter’s friend had stayed the Sunday for a sleep over and as the two of them soaked up the sun, my boy splashed into the water with his mini surf board. I took control of the cooking like a caveman standing guard over the fire while keeping a watchful eye on any beast that might dare to snatch my hard fought for meal. A beautiful looking dog with long brown shaggy hair that had sniffed the delights carried on the wind came closer and closer hoping to gain a treat. It immediately caught the attention of all the children who came over, and gave it plenty of fuss which it

gladly enjoyed. Its owner joined us and we chatted. Once they had left the requests for us to get our own family dog got louder and louder. Since our cat Sunny passed away after fifteen happy years, the children would love to get a family dog as a replacement. I soon distracted them with some delicious barbecued food. We sat on towels with our toes in the sand. We also enjoyed a good old fashioned 99 Ice-cream from a van parked on top of the cliff. It was a glorious bank holiday weekend weather wise and a real treat. Most years you can expect wind, rain, grey skies and generally a wash out for the early May Day weekend, but not this year. If only our weather could be more predictable, but then again it’s such an influence on the British mentality. It’s probably one of the reasons us Brits are so unpredictable, and something the politicians should have taken into account before calling the E.U Referendum and expecting to get the result they wanted! www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author_king

Bake Off Competition There are few things in life I am good at. Drinking wine, looking after pussycats, sleeping, telling stories and eating: it’s a short list. Now when it comes to eating, I am something of Above: Keri Beevis an over achiever. Others may call it having a big eye, but ‘over achiever’ sounds more productive. My specialist skill area is pizza, closely followed by cheese and crackers, and though I will always pick savoury over sweet, I still like to do my bit for the chocolate and cake industry. So unsurprisingly I was over the moon when I found out some of the girls I work with were planning on having a bake off competition… especially when they asked me to be one of the judges. Now initially I was a little skeptical. The plan was for the cakes to be judged and the winner announced, before slices were sold off to the office staff with the proceeds going to charity. ‘So let me get this right?’ I asked Hannah who was organising the event. ‘You girls are going to pay an

entry fee to be able to bake a cake. You then want me to eat a slice of everyone’s cake, for free, tell you which one I think is the best, then everyone else in the office has to pay if they want to eat a slice?’ ‘That’s right,’ she beamed. My work clothes have been feeling rather snug of late and I had been planning on going on a diet, but it was for charity. I decided the dieting would have to wait while I did my bit for this worthy cause. The other judge was my friend, Ness, who is like the Mary Berry of our office. She had been selected for her baking expertise, so I can only assume I was picked for my cake eating skills. Of course everyone was too polite to confirm this, but we all knew it was true. So the day finally arrived. I toyed with eating a croissant to line my stomach, but settled for just a cup of coffee, and boy, am I glad I did. By the time I had sampled all of the cakes, I was on a chocolate high and in dire need of looser pants. I also felt sick for much of the day. And that folks is what happens when you literally have your cake and eat it. PAGE

R2-D2 From Sphero The ever-faithful Star Wars droid in the palm of your hand Having reviewed some of Sphero’s line of robots over the past three years (including the amazing gravity defying BB-8), I was absolutely made up when R2-D2 dropped onto my desk a few weeks back! For those of us who haven’t been near a movie theatre or television for the last 40 years, R2D2 is character from the enormously popular STAR WARS movie franchise, appearing in 9 of them (so far!). The droid (robot) is portrayed as a skilled mechanic, fighter pilot’s assistant and has many hidden skills which have been gradually revealed over the course of the movies. Sphero have clearly made sure that their version of R2-D2 is as authentic as possible and it is

absolutely crammed with technology which mimics the character from the movies. With front and rear LED lights, rotating head, integrated speaker and, most amazing of all, articulating legs, which mean when Artoo is stationary, his legs are position straight down and he stands upright. As soon as he is commanded to move, the middle leg drops down and moves forward, his side legs then move backwards to form a tripod (as he does in the films). Artoo is controlled using Sphero’s Droid App (iOS or Android), after scanning for the app, you are presented with a selection screen showing the available droids within Bluetooth range. After selecting R2-D2 from the list he suddenly lights up and chirps. The app screen then shows controls for moving the droid and also for

triggering his signature moves. These moves really make the whole experience authentic as they mimic scenes from the film, such as when the Jawas disabled the droid and caused him to fall on his face in A New Hope. There are simply too many to detail here, but you could recreate pivotal scenes from Star Wars using these moves alone. Aside from these features, the app also allows for Holographic Simulation and the ability to explore difference places and ship interiors from the Star Wars galaxy. It also supports Droid to Droid experience, where R2-D2 will interact with other Sphero Star Wars droids.

I’m a big fan of Star Wars, so I have to admit I was a bit star-struck when I realised just how good the Sphero R2-D2 really is and at the current price of under £95, it feels like good value for any of fan Star Wars. It should also be noted, that along with Sphero range of robots and droids, R2-D2 is fully compatible with Sphero-Edu which gives budding young coders the opportunity to learn about programming using their favourite Star Wars character.

There is a ‘Watch With Me’ feature was one of my favourites, it allows you to select a movie from the Star Wars saga and R2-D2 will react to difference scenes, such as acting scared when Darth Vader appears on the screen and much more.

IS IT TIME TO ASK...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Is It Time To Ask For Help? Many of us feel disinclined to ask for help. Even asking for directions can require a huge effort. We may be loath to appear vulnerable or incompetent, telling ourselves, 'I'll be fine, we must be nearly there by now, it will all work out in the end'! But whilst we may feel that asking for help is a sign of weakness, the reality is it can often be a sign of strength. Appreciating the value of additional support or input can positively influence our chances of success, saving us time and allowing us to maximise our resources. There's nothing weak about doing that! Here's to recognising that it's time to ask for help. • Feeling overwhelmed, out of our depth, not sure where to start or how to proceed, is an important indicator that it's time to ask for help. Whether we're in a study, work or domestic situation, it can be frustrating and futile to fritter increasing amounts of time not knowing where, what or how to begin. Overwhelm can result in anger, frustration and feeling de-motivated, especially if we're new, young or lacking in confidence. If we're unable to determine the

way forward, we may end up feeling stupid, useless and choose to walk away. Asking for help from the outset means we potentially start with a clearer overview and directions or instructions from day one. We're able to make notes and continue using any of the channels of communication we've opened, so helping us become more confident about speaking up if and when required. • There may be areas of our life which really cannot be ignored any longer. A team may be struggling to bond; a disruptive relationship may be causing havoc; or staff development may not be as successful as was planned. Outside help may provide a better, more neutral perspective, see things differently and be able to work effectively to bring about positive results. If your personal relationship is struggling, outside help can be beneficial in the form of relationship counselling. This can be a good decision even when the only option left is to split, facilitating a more respectful resolution, especially when there are children to consider.

IS IT TIME TO ASK...

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

• Stress often builds up over time, perhaps being triggered by a catalogue of day-to-day pressures, unhappy mindset or precarious physical wellbeing. Learn to recognise the signs that your stress symptoms are starting to appear. Signs may be poor concentration, accidents and mistakes, not sleeping well, losing your joy in life, each alerting you to the need to start saying 'no', develop better coping strategies and start asking for help. Counselling and hypnotherapy can be good ways to deal with old unhelpful habits, support good decision-making and introduce effective stress management strategies. Find time for fun, things that you're good at and commit to taking regular breaks. • What about those occasions when we're already doing too much, yet still agree to take on more, rather than say 'no'? Such behaviour can come from a fear of appearing incapable, inefficient, not coping or we don't want to disappoint or risk losing a client. We may want to do it all, be keen to be involved in every step of the process, perhaps not trust others to do as good a job or prefer to micro-manage everything. Asking for help allows others to feel included, part of the team and so enable them to develop and even suggest better working practices. Or there may be some real value in forming alliances with other associated businesses and offering a more comprehensive menu of goods and services, a win/win for all involved.

Issue 62 2018

You gain by having additional time for other, perhaps more important things, or free up some time for fun activities. It might be viable to pay for help with domestic chores, like gardening, ironing or cleaning or engage business expertise to support your accountancy, social media, admin needs; all could be money well spent. • Perfectionism is often a barrier to asking for help. Easing our stress levels through constant checking may bring its own temporary reassurance, but it's often short-lived. Learning to move on from one piece of work when it's finished, good enough, can save a lot of time and stress. Besides that, going over something repeatedly often means we become de-sensitised and word-blind to any flaws or errors. A fresh pair of eyes can often zone in on something straight away. • Trust other people's areas of expertise. If you know someone who's already practised or familiar with what you're attempting to do invite them to share their experiences with you. Chances are they'll be only too happy to help, and you may be able to reciprocate at another time. Alliances like this can bring advantages to all involved. Our business skills or personal capabilities may benefit from the introduction of a coach, trainer or mentor to provide guidance, motivation and accountability. Soliciting help can move us out of our comfort zone and take our personal and professional development to the next level. When our aim is to grow and develop, it's often important to ask for help.

Have You Discovered ‘Moments’, The Curated Content Option In Twitter, Yet? Twitter Moments is a relatively new feature for most of us and lets you collate your tweets into one Moment allowing your followers to catch up with what you’ve been up to or feel passionate about over the course of the day. It also allows you to include others’ tweets in addition to your own. Think of this as Twitter’ s version of Instagram Stories. These Twitter Moments are great for increasing brand awareness and raising visibly and engagement surrounding your brand/product. You can use a variety of photos, videos, existing tweets, retweets and even others tweets. Moments could be particularly good if you don’t tweet that often and your tweets are getting lost in your followers feeds - using ‘Moments’ would allow you to recycle those tweets and display them in a way that can be re-shared, giving them a potential new life and hopefully get the views, likes & RTs they originally deserved! Before you dive straight in there’s a few things to consider if you’re going to use this for your business: • Will this Moment appeal to my audience and generate engagement? • Does it help promote my brand or product? • What keywords or hashtags could I add to the title/description fields to improve discoverability? • Do all the individual tweets in the ‘Moment’ form a coherent and logical progression.

So what sort of Moment content could your business create? Here’s a few ideas: • Comment on a trending news topic or event • Promote a message or an inspirational storyline • Create a round up of entertaining industry/ brand/product related content • Event/Concert/Product Launch • Customer feedback • Promote your own business news Where is the ‘Moments’ option? If you’re on an iPhone it can be found on your profile tab on a desktop it’s likely to be found across the top near Tweets, Followers etc’. Other platforms may have this in a slightly different place. One last tip - Ensure that you keep your ‘Moments’ titles short, punchy and relevant. Then use the description to give your followers a taste of what they can expect to find in your Moment. Think of it like a News story headline and extract! Whatever your brand or product, there’s lots of ways you can utilise Twitter Moments for your business.

If you need more information or help on how Twitter Moments could work for your business, please get in touch with me at http://paulkirkdesign.co.uk or at @PKirk_designer PAGE

MOTORING REVIEW

Jaguar XE R-Sport Review

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring journalist. Tweeting @carwriteups You get a lot of kit shoehorned into the sporty version of Jaguar’s XE. Equipment encompasses xenon lights, two-zone climate control, an eight-inch touchscreen sat-nav and heated door mirrors. But, a body kit is the biggest clue to differentiate the R-Sport from the other more conservative XEs. Chrome trim adorns the front air intakes; the side sills are extended; and then there's an R-Sport badge on the boot. The suspension is low, and the wheel-arches are filled with diamond turned five-spoke alloys. 18-inch wheels are standard, but my test car had beefier 19-inchers fitted. There is a range of engines, and the car I drove came with a 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel, pushing out 240PS. It also had an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD four-wheel drive. You can get into an XE R-Sport from a little over £31,000, but the priciest (yes, you’ve guessed it), is the 240PS diesel, which carries a hefty

price-tag of £40,125. That means forking out a hard-hitting £450 in road tax, too. Behind the wheel, the R-Sport’s athletic character gives credibility to the puffed up exterior trim, particularly if you hone things by choosing the ‘dynamic’ setting on the Jaguar Drive Control. The car is light, due to aluminium making up 75 percent of its bodyshell – and this shows in the Jag’s dexterity. Sure, it isn't quite as sharp-handling as BMW’s 3 Series M Sport, and the electric power-steering is a bit vague, but altogether the XE R-Sport is a comfortable car. Zero to 62mph arrives in 6.1 seconds, and the top speed is 155mph. Furthermore, the 54.4mpg average fuel consumption figure means the muscular XE isn't a thirsty beast. The ride is excellent, with the R-Sport's suspension set-up feeling confidently stiff, but not unpleasantly hard. You can adjust things, though, with Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics dampers. The system is optional – and worth it. It was housed in my test car, and it just means

you can ‘taste the rainbow’ regarding different levels of comfort. But, left to its own devices, the XE R-Sport corners without any roll and has enormous amounts of grip - as you might expect of a car with four-wheel drive. It induces confidence and finds just the right balance between sportiness and comfort. The XE’s driving position is on the money, with loads of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel. The substantial A-pillars do mean there’s a blind spot, and the centre console feels a tad too broad, but the wide-opening doors mean access is easy. What’s more, there’s space in the rear for two six-footers. So, the Jaguar XE is a compelling car to go for if you're in the market for a compact executive saloon. The blend of comfort and dexterity is excellent, while the 240PS twinturbocharged diesel power unit performs with gusto. Also, the R-Sport version of the baby

Nibbles &Tipples June Article By Cheryl Cade

Tipples There is a developing trend in the beer industry, the return of the Tap room, something that to me is not novel. During my tours of Europe it's unusual not to find a brewery that does not have a tap. These are wonderful areas to stop and enjoy the freshest of beers, normally with something a little different to attract the tourist. D'Oude Maalderij (a self-built brewery near Kortrijk) has one of the best collections of pinball machines I have seen, but also an X-rated toilet, which attracted more attention from my travellers than the aged beer list. Mass production combined with tied pubs led to the demise of the ‘Tap’ in the UK and I am very pleased to see its return. It gives the brewer an

extra income, the traveller another place to stop, and income to local economies, sometimes a pub to a village that no longer had one.

Recently, I attended the opening of the tap for All Day Brewing. Travelling up the long drive, you pass the hop poles that will supply next year’s hops, followed by the cows that will be enjoying the spent grain from the mash. Sitting in the sunshine watching various insects dive bomb the pond whilst drinking one of their barrel-aged beers is a one of life’s simple pleasures. Some other tap rooms include: Chalk Hill, Fat Cat Brewery Tap, St Andrews Brewhouse, Redwell, Humpty Dumpty, St Peters, Woodfords (although more of a restaurant/pub) and soon Wildcraft along with a few others. Plans have now been passed for Duration Brewery near Castle Acre. The Tap room is a feature that will enhance the visitor experience of this historic site.

NIBBLES & TIPPLES Issue 62 2018

Nibbles This month, I have experienced the Good, Bad & Ugly of mass catering. I am ok with a fixed menu when there is a large party going out for a meal, but usually you are given a choice of 2 dishes. During a family visit to one of the Holiday Inn (Norwich Airport) ‘event nights’, we were told we had, Sausage & Mash followed by Eton Mess (only changes for allergens), this does not scream to me celebration, just cheap. But we all wanted to celebrate and had already paid so off we go.

Ok, the sausages were good, the gravy and mash passable, but the peas… overcooked, hard, inedible green bullets. Only for this to be followed by a disaster. Eton Mess should be strawberries, cream and CRUNCHY meringue pieces, mixed together to create a textural delight in each bite. Not this… bland strawberries could be identified and there was certainly cream, but we all had to play hunt the meringue; I found a piece of sugary mush. We envied the people allergic to cream, with their delicious fresh fruit salad. As a family we celebrated, danced to an ‘interesting’ DJ (not sure he remembered the brief) and had a few drinks. We would not go there again for the food or the tired décor.

A few days later, some of us headed to the Glasshouse for a meal. Ok it’s a Wetherspoons, but no pre-order; I even used the app. The drinks turned up, the food shortly after; they dealt with the allergens; there were no complaints about anything. The food is not the most inspiring, but it's reliable, mass catering on a grand scale, that means whichever Wetherspoons you visit you know what to expect. It may be all prepared elsewhere and shipped in with the simplest of cooking methods required, but my Steak was cooked perfectly and everything else had flavour, with nothing sitting around under heat lights for ages to get warm and dry. My only issue with this bar is that it does get noisy, but then it is busy.

Paws For A Good Cause At Hospital Charity Fun Dog Show And Fete It’s not every day you get to enjoy a fun dog show, woodland walk, Staffordshire Bull Terrier display team whilst rubbing shoulders with Darth Vader, Transformers and a Crufts winner The Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity has pulled out all the stops to make this year’s summer fete on Saturday 16th June a day not to be missed. The popular annual event will be held, as always, on the hospital’s Colney Lane site with the theme Woof, Wellies and Wellbeing. As well as a whole host of attractions and entertainment, for the first time there will be a chance for visitors to bring along their dog to take part in a fun dog show organised by Beachside Agility Group. Sponsored by Adroit Dog Grooming and Dog Boutique, there will be a range of categories including hairiest hound, best rescue dog, best young handler, best old timer, as well as a chance to test your dog’s skills at the rally obedience class. The dog-themed fete comes as the hospital welcomed its first Pets as Therapy (PAT) dogs earlier this year when they visited the patients on Heydon Ward. The PAT team will also be at the fete and will be demonstrating what they look for in a PAT dog. You will also have the chance to take part in an organised woodland walk around the hospital site, thanks to Norwich Best for Pets, and visit the team from Taverham Vets who will have their pet photo booth on site. Taking time out from Miss England preparations, Natasha Adams, who was

recently crowned Miss Norfolk, will be bringing along her own pampered pooch, Ruby. We have more than 40 stalls, including dog and animal-themed stalls, tombolas, food and drink, a BBQ, games and entertainment from the Rock Choir, dancers from Busybodies stage school and the hospital choir. Also visiting will be Darth Vader, Storm Troopers and Bumble Bee from the Transformers. Proceeds from the dog show will go to N&N Hospitals Charity. Fundraising Manager, Louise Cook, said “We are delighted at how this year’s fete is shaping up - we have received some fantastic support from individuals, organisations and companies who have volunteered to help us out on what is our first dog-themed event. “Everyone is welcome to come along for what we’re certain will be a great day out, whether you come with a four-legged friend or not.” Entry is free and the fete starts at 12pm until 4pm with free parking on the main hospital site. Master Illusionist Showcases Popular Work In New Show Photo by Mark Douet

DERREN BROWN - JUNE 19-23 The multi-award-winning master of mind control and psychological illusion Derren Brown is heading back to Norwich Theatre Royal.

and he has performed at sold-out venues previously including Norwich Theatre Royal, and estimates his shows have now been seen by over a million people.

His brand new show Underground is on stage from June 19 to 23 and mixes together some of his favourite work.

He has also enjoyed critical acclaim for his West End runs and enjoyed a successful stage debut at New York’s Atlantic Theater with the show Derren Brown: Secret.

Derren aims to create a jaw-dropping experience of magical genius for his audience whether they are new to his work or big fans. He explained: “Underground began as a show to take abroad for people who had not seen me. It is made up of all the best bits of the previous tours put together to form a new show with its own standalone integrity. The result, everyone felt, was so strong that we decided to tour it here. “The material has been re-envisioned and reworked and, by its nature, is different from night to night anyway. People who come after having seen those previous shows are telling me they are being caught out and surprised again which is great to hear.”

John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “A master of mind manipulation, the only guarantee with one of Derren’s shows is that you have no idea how he achieves the impossible on stage. This will be a chance for both fans of Derren and people new to his work to be wowed and amazed by some spectacular illusions.”

Listing: Derren Brown, Tuesday 19 - Saturday 23 June at 7.30pm, and Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets £10-£45. Discounts for Friends.

Derren’s live shows have previously won two Olivier Awards as well as plenty of nominations

Special Musical Reunion At Norfolk Deaf Association's 120th Anniversary Celebrations Nathaniel Laker (18), a student at Access to Music and member of Norwich band The Visitors, is set to perform on the same bill as the man who inspired him to learn electric guitar when he was 12. Dave Cowley (64), lead guitarist for local function band The O'Fenders, set Nathaniel off on the music path, when Nathaniel and his elder brother Stanislav, played three numbers with The O'Fenders at their sister Natasha's wedding, six years ago. Nathaniel and Dave will be reunited on stage when The O'Fenders and The Visitors perform at Norfolk Deaf Association's 120th anniversary celebrations, 'Turn it Down' at Epic Studios on Saturday, June 16.

Nathaniel explained: “It was an amazing experience to play guitar, when I was 12, alongside Dave and the rest of The O'Fenders. I was self-taught up until then. We had four rehearsals with the band, who were very welcoming, and put together two Beatles songs, Back in the USSR and All You Need is Love and Natasha Dance by Chris de Burgh.” “Straight after the wedding I decided that I wanted to learn music properly and had four years of electric guitar lessons, before getting onto the two-year performance course at Access to Music in Norwich.” “We are all aged between 17 and 21 in The Visitors,” added Nathaniel. “It's going to be quite a unique experience sharing the stage at

Epic with The O'Fenders, who definitely have a few years on us!” It was Nathaniel's idea to stage a gig to help celebrate Norfolk Deaf Association's 120th anniversary and raise awareness in young people about protecting your hearing when listening to loud music, as well as raising money for NDA. Dave Cowley has lived in Norfolk since 1992, but is originally from Birmingham. He was also 12 when he started his musical journey, and became lead guitarist in a band called The Bobcats. The band was founded in 1965 and, with Dave's dad, Fred, as 'minder', were soon playing clubs and pubs. In 1966 they won a Battle of the Bands competition at the Locarno Ballroom Birmingham and this led to a contract with Pye Records, making them the youngest professional band at the time. Pye Records released one Bobcats single, Can't See For Looking and the band made appearances on national TV on Blue Peter and the David Frost Show. Dave then played in touring bands until he moved to Norfolk and had a break, but returned to the music 10 years ago, when he stood in as lead guitarist for The O'Fenders, and has been with them ever since. Dave said: “It's great that Nathaniel was inspired by his appearance with The O'Fenders. I am looking forward to being reunited with him on stage at Epic Studios on 16 June. Good luck to him as he pursues his musical dream.” Nathaniel is going to do one more year at Access to Music, taking a neo-classical guitar course, after which, he hopes The Visitors will be able to do some serious touring and see how far they can go in the music industry. The band write all their own songs and to date have released an 8-track LP 'The Visitors', with a four-track EP due out this year. “We write on a co-operative basis,” said Nathaniel. “One

of the band will come in with a musical idea. If it's accepted we then work out our own parts. I'd describe our music as rock pop with a bit of punk.” Norfolk Deaf Association's 120th anniversary celebrations, 'Turn it Down' are at Epic Studios, Magdalen Street, Norwich, on Saturday 16 June. Doors open at 6.30pm, with the evening beginning at 6.45pm. The O'Fenders and The Visitors will each play one-hour sets. There is also a talk, 'That's music to my ears', by Rob Shepheard, an expert in noise induced hearing loss. Tickets are £25 and £20 for under 25s and include a welcome drink, hog roast and pudding. Legacy Dance Company UK Premieres 2018 Show

THE EVOLUTION OF MAN[SCULINITY] - JUNE 22-23

What does it mean to be male and how has everyone’s view of men changed over the last 100 years? That is the theme of the brand-new dance show being premiered by LEGACY Dance Company UK at Norwich Playhouse this summer. The Evolution Of Man[sculinity] will take the audience on a two-hour journey through the ages mixing dance styles and music at Norwich Playhouse on June 22-23. It is the latest chapter for the company, which was initially formed from the male dance talent selected to star opposite members of the worldrenowned Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures in Lord of the Flies around four years ago.

Since then, Norwich-based choreographer Cat Chapman has run Legacy, made up of male dancers aged 10 to 21, through a mix of live performances, workshops with some of the globe’s top choreographers and leading companies from the dance and musical theatre worlds, and the chance to hone their skills in sessions every weekend. She was inspired to look at the subject of the show during a Legacy session. Cat explained: “I was looking at the lads in rehearsal one day and I thought we have such a diverse set of them in one room. Some are just typical teenage lads and others are just completely comfortable in their own skin, and I thought if you go back even 50 years, they couldn’t have been how they are now. It got the cogs turning and I thought let’s

go right back to the twentieth century and see how things have changed for men, particularly young men.” It will include an extract from the acclaimed collaboration between LEGACY, New Adventures, and Norwich Theatre Royal writing students which was performed at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, Cambridgeshire, earlier this year. Cat explained: “It told the story of young men who were drafted to serve at Duxford in the Second World War and what they went through in terms of being in training, conflict, fighting and flying. What gave it extra impact was that we were performing among the historic planes that are on display there.” While she is at the helm of the company, she also stressed it is really important that the Legacy members themselves have a big part to play in the creation of this show too. She said: “These days, you can’t just be a dancer. You have to be able to do everything. It is also very important to me that they have an input because it is their show and they are on stage doing it and in the studio with me. I am always up for giving them creative input. It is also about giving them a voice.” Listing: The Evolution Of Man[sculinity], Norwich Playhouse, Friday 22-Saturday 23 June at 7.30pm. Suitable for age 7+. Tickets £12, and £8 concessions. In a short film which The Wildlife Trusts have recently released on social media, James McVey, says: “I’m supporting The Wildlife Trusts’ national challenge of spending 30 Days Wild. Every day in June they are asking you guys to do something wild. Now - that could be going camping somewhere if you’ve never been camping, it could be doing an off-road trail, climbing a massive hill that you’ve always wanted to do but never done - but it could also be something as simple as recycling if you’ve never recycled before or buying a reusable water bottle.” He adds: “It doesn’t have to be absolutely crazy - but it’s just a great incentive to get you guys thinking a little bit differently and getting active so make sure you sign-up and get involved!” Lucy McRobert, Campaigns Manager for The Wildlife Trusts, says: “It’s so kind of James to do a shout-out for 30 Days Wild - everyone in the team was so touched. 30 Days Wild is a lovely way to get closer to nature and marvel at the everyday wildlife that lives all around you. Sit quietly and enjoy watching dragonflies dance over a pond or take a moment to sow a windowbox of wildflowers to help bees. Get together with your neighbours to create hedgehog highways or sow front-garden meadows along the length of your street. No matter how small the action, it all counts!”

One Two Groove Indie Mini-Music Festival - June 21st 2018

One Two Groove, a fresh, new, Indie mini-music festival, organised by 18-year-old Ellie Bickerton-Jones for her final major project as part of her Media course at City College Norwich. The festival is a celebration of upcoming Indie talent from Norfolk alongside independent businesses. The festival has a promising line up from local artists: New Scientists, Painted Heathers, St. Benedict’s and Jenny Andrews. In addition to the fantastic music, there will also be stall holders; Lefty Flip, Never Trust a Hippie and Lovering (with more to be announced), which will sell a range of products, from vintage clothing to jewellery. The event is free, with any donations going to Big C, a local charity that aims to improve the lives of those affected by Cancer. The mini-festival will be live-streamed (with link to follow), for those at home, and beyond Norwich to get a taste of the local music scene. Ellie Bickerton-Jones is enthusiastic about production, which is why she is producing this event fully independently before graduating from the Media Learning Company at City College Norwich. “I wanted to create something

really ambitious as this is my final project at college, and I have a particular interest in music, seeing as I play the drums and guitar in my spare time. Therefore, I decided to create a mini music festival, to showcase local talent, as well as having the chance to explore production before heading to university in September”. The headliners, New Scientist add, “Being part of this event is a cool idea because as a band we will be able to meet new bands and new people. In the music industry, it is good to have contacts, so this event is very good for getting more people in your local area to help you out.” Teacher & Media Learning Company Leader, Lorraine Sutherland, adds, “Ellie aspires to work in production and has independently developed this event in order to push her skills and ability. It is fantastic to see her commitment to creating a community event on this scale.” The event will be take place on Thursday 21st June 2018 at Platform Theatre at City College Norwich, with doors opening at 7.30pm. One Two Groove is a free event, with any donations welcome for Big C. PAGE
