With Christmas over and done with and the New Year only just underway, its time to look to the future and see what 2017 has in store. We are only a few days into 2017 and already we have been inundated with lots of fabulous upcoming events. The Norfolk and Norwich festival in May promises to be just as colourful and fun as previous years with a packed programme already and they haven’t yet finalised the full-line up! The Crab and Lobster Festival in Cromer promises to be a must for May also. With the Annual Norwich Charity Darts Master in June, there is alot to look forward to. If like some you are more of an indoors person, then reading about having a private chef for the evening may be right up your street. All the pleasure of fine dining in your own home and no dishes to clean after. January can be a tough month, its cold, usually wet and for some, riddled with financial worry. Our resident counsellor Susan Leigh gives some advice on how to combat these worries to make January an easier month. For those where money is slightly less of an issue why not take a leaf out of Cheryl Cades (our resident beer sommelier’s) book and visit some of the wonderful new eateries our county has to offer.

THE BENJAMIN FOUNDATION

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 45 2017

The Benjamin Foundation We are really grateful to Iceni for adopting The Benjamin Foundation as one of their chosen charities and for all the complimentary space in their great magazine throughout 2016. We’d also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all of our supporters who help us give hope, opportunity, stability and independence to hundreds of children, young people and families across Norfolk and Suffolk . Here is a selection of some of our highlights in 2016 from just a few of our services and fundraising events:

Sleepout 2016

Sponsorship from our event in November has now exceeded a staggering £27000. Thank you so much to everybody who took part & all who sponsored work colleagues, friends and family. These funds will directly benefit the young people who use our supported accommodation. Jon Clifton Photography

This year, after working successfully in Norfolk for 21 years we have expanded into Suffolk to provide accommodation for children in care and those leaving care aged 16 – 18 years old. We provide a safe place for the young people to live while our staff help them get their lives back on track so they can leave us as confident young adults able to make their own way in life.

Break for Young Carers

Several organisations, including the Breakaway Business Networking group, have fundraised for us to enable breaks for young carers over the long summer holidays. Fun days out & weekend’s away give these children some respite from their caring responsibilities and they make new friends and lasting memories.

Furniture Stores

Working in partnership with Suffolk County Council and FCC Environment, we are now operating a re-use shop at the Foxhall household waste recycling centre in Ipswich.

It has been a record year in terms of the volume of furniture donated to us. Our furniture stores, in Norwich, Holt, Dereham and Ipswich enable us to raise funds to support our work but we have also donated a significant amount of furniture and white goods to individuals and families in crisis. Do pop in for a browse if you are nearby, there are always surprises in store!

We are always looking out for good quality donations and provide free collection.

Nursery and childcare

Ditchingham Day Nursery celebrated 5 years with The Benjamin Foundation & is now an accredited Forest School where staff lead exciting outdoor activities with the children. Our Kidzone club in North Walsham continues to be very popular, offering nursery places, pre school, after school and holiday clubs for over 100 children aged 2 – 13 years in a safe and friendly environment. Both establishments have a “Good” rating from Ofsted.

Concerts at Blickling

We were delighted to be the chosen charity at the annual “Last night of the Proms” concert at Blickling and the new, exciting “Classic Ibiza” concert, the organisers generously gave us £1 from the sale of every programme. We served tea & coffee and welcomed guests to sit awhile on some comfy settees from our furniture store.

Benjamin’s Boating Weekend

During a weekend in October, Ferry Marina, based at Horning, very generously reserved their entire fleet of holiday cruisers for the weekend. All the money raised from the hire of their boats came directly to us to support our work locally with children, young people and families. In addition to the fundraising element, three of the boats were used by young people we support and they enjoyed a relaxing, memorable weekend.

Thinking of volunteering in 2017? Ben’s Workforce is our service in North Norfolk for people aged over 65 who need someone to do small maintenance and repair jobs around the home. The aim of this service is to enable older people to retain their independence by living at home for longer. We are always looking for volunteers to work with us. If you have some DIY/handyman skills, we’d love to hear from you. The work is extremely rewarding and sociable. Whether you can spare a day a week or a day a month, please contact us for a chat If you’d like to know more about any aspects of our work, support us with fundraising or perhaps volunteer your time with Ben’s Workforce please do get in touch: info@benjaminfoundation.co.uk or tel: 01603 615670, like us on facebook or follow us on twitter @charitytbf

With very best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year from all at The Benjamin Foundation PAGE

SOCIAL MEDIA

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 45 2017

Have You Considered Trying Twitter Polls? I'm sure you've all seen the Twitter polls icon in your Twitter account - it's an often underused feature of Twitter. Twitter polls can be a great feedback tool to help your business better understand the needs and opinions of your customers. Here's a few ways that businesses could utilise them:

What could we do to improve our business? Faster response times, Improved website, Free returns?

1. Trending topic related polls This requires you to have a good sense of what's trending on social media. Check out 'moments' or 'trending topics' on Twitter to gain some insights. Use a poll to be part of the conversation in an engaging way - whether it's a local or national media event. If possible include event hashtags to widen your reach and connect with people chatting around the topic. For instance some of the more recent media opportunities could have been #GBBO #Strictly

3. Lifestyle polls Try to pose questions which can be tied back to what your product/service does and get people thinking about what you offer.

Which dance have you always wanted to learn? #Strictly #BBCStrictly Ballroom, Latin, Jive? Helpful if you’re into dance or supply dance related merchandise

Summary Polls won't be for everyone and it'll take time and patience to get engagement on them but it's worth it as they can be a great way to get insight into your audience wants and needs.

For instance: What's your favourite cake? #GBBO #MaryBerry Victoria Sponge, Fruit Cake, Carrot Cake? Helpful if you're into cakes, baking etc.

2. Audience feedback polls Polls can be a quick and easy way to get audience feedback or preferences about your product/ service - but don't get disheartened if you don't get a lot of response the more engaged you become with your audience the more likely they are to participate in a poll. If you don't try you'll never know! Polls can be a great way to test audience reaction before you proceed with a product/ service change or expansion, in the same way that larger companies perform consumer research or film makers have test screenings. For instance: We're considering expanding our delivery times, which would be more helpful? Before 9am, After 6pm, Weekends? Helpful if you operate a delivery service.

Twitter: @icenimagazine

For instance: What's your comforting early morning drink before work? Tea, Coffee, Smoothie/Juice? Helpful if you're a coffee shop or drinks manufacturer What's the one item you can never find when you're in a rush? Phone, Keys, Wallet? Helpful if you're in insurance or maybe even keycutting services.

Consider posting your polls during times that you've defined as being the best times for you to get engagement with your audience - for instance during #norfolkhour or other local or industry related Twitter hours.

Hopefully the above examples have inspired you to give them a try. Adding industry, event or local geographical #hashtags can help improve their success. If you need further help with Twitter or want to know more tips on how to increase the effectiveness of Twitter for your business get in touch with me at http://paulkirkdesign.co.uk or at @PKirk_designer

THE ANONYMOUS TEACHER

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 45 2017

Teachers, Parents And Social Media I must begin by saying that I make absolutely no apology for the emotive piece you're about to read. I'm sitting here, floored by reading yet another post on social media slating my profession and I'm not just going to sit back and take it (anonymously writing an article will do!). Since I became a teacher, the use of social media has grown significantly in popularity. Friend requests on Facebook from parents and children (even ones under 13 - parents, what are you doing allowing them access?) have become an issue ever since, but what's worse is the easy access to a large audience to share gripes and annoyances about individual teachers and schools. Most recently, I saw a frequently-shared post about an American teacher who, during a Thanksgiving performance, had stopped a child from accessing the microphone. The child's mother had filmed all of this and shared it on social media, publicly. Her child's meltdown and the laughter thereafter; she chose to share that, to have more people see his humiliation... or so we assume. The clip was fairly short and we know nothing about what else had happened that afternoon. We only have the child's mother's view and the video clip. What I saw looked insensitive (at best), however, as with all forms of media, Twitter: @icenimagazine

one must not believe everything without asking further questions. A few years ago, an anti-school Facebook group was set up. A list of teachers who were "crap" and those who were "good" was established. It was horrific to see the parents of certain children using simple mistakes as evidence in their statements about certain teachers. We all make mistakes; we are human. Should we have our mistakes broadcast to all and sundry? Do the parents sharing this sort of thing actually know the true story or are they relying on what their child has told them? Things can so easily be misinterpreted and children often miss out key details. My plea for 2017 is for parents to consider the impact of their rants on social media and with whom they share their concerns. I'm sure most of you tell your children, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!"; please could you think about that before posting on social media too.

NOVA SILVER

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 45 2017

Happy New Year From Us All At Nova Silver!

We hope you had a very happy Christmas and are looking forward to a brand shiny new year! As we all know trends in jewellery and fashion can change really quickly, but we thought this month we’d explore some tried and tested favourites that are sure to add a bit of sparkle to simple outfit. Pearls can often be thought of as a bit old-fashioned and traditional, but why not consider a pearl pendant or earrings with a more modern setting? It can be a great way to re-invent something classic, and you know your mother would approve! If you have a favourite pendant that has been seen a few too many times you could always pop it onto a different length or style of chain. It’s amazing the difference a piece of leather cord can make in place of a silver chain, or a longer length over a roll neck jumper. It’s a whole lot cheaper than buying a new piece of jewellery, and can re-ignite your passion for a piece you might have pushed to the back of the jewellery box. Don’t forget that, like anything else, jewellery can be really given a new lease of life with a bit of a clean. A silver jewellery cloth (around £2.50) can really bring the sparkle back to a piece of jewellery. For more ‘wellloved’ (old!) pieces, or anything with stones, feel free to pop into us for advice, or a professional clean.

Look out for a future column from us where we’ll share some of our best tips for cleaning your jewellery.

One of my favourite festive movies is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and whenever I’m watching it I can’t helping wondering if the writers knew of the Beev clan and based the Griswold family loosely (well, okay, almost Above: Keri Beevis entirely) on us. Here are some of our finest Christmas moments. 1/ One year sister really wanted a Dido CD. Off went Mama Beev to the local music stores and she purchased the CD with relative ease. Well… so we thought. On Christmas morning sister excitedly opened the CD shaped gift that was tagged to her under the tree. It was indeed a CD, but instead of Dido, it was for a band called Dodo. 2/ Beevs + board games always leads to hilarity and one time we were playing a team game where one member had to give a subject and the members of his/her team had to name as many things as possible. So for example, Colours: Red, blue, pink, purple, orange, yellow, green, etc. The subject was ‘Things That Come In Pairs.’ I was asking and brother Beev was answering. His gem of a response was ‘pips’. 3/ Our family black Labrador, Cody, adored Christmas. He used to get so excited when the gifts went under the tree, knowing that one of them was PAGE

for him. We always got him a new squeaky toy and by the time he passed away he had about sixteen of them. Mr Banana, Mr Lemon, Mr Burger. You get the idea. Anyway, one Christmas sister Beev wanted a Cartman (from Southpark) moneybox. Mama Beev bought it for her and it was hidden away in the cupboard. On Christmas Eve when she got it out to wrap it up, Cody took a shine to it and became convinced this was his gift. Mama Beev took it away, wrapped it up and it went under the tree with the other gifts. Later on that evening, brother, sister and I were out down the pub getting merry, while Mama and Papa Beev were at home getting merry with friends. Cody had disappeared and was being very quiet, so Mama Beev went to check up on him. Our naughty Lab had ripped his way through the gifts under the tree, causing mayhem along the way, until he had found Cartman, and he sat with the toy moneybox in his mouth. Mama Beev wrestled Cartman from him, rewrapped the gift as best she could, and sister Beev was presented with a chewed up moneybox on Christmas morning, plus a very disgruntled Cody giving her the evil eye. 4/ And finally, I will never get bored of this one. You know the Band Aid Song, Do they know it’s Christmas Time? Well you know the chorus goes, ‘Feed the world’. For years, I mean literally years, sister Beev thought they were singing, ‘Fever whoa!’ You really couldn’t make this stuff up.

The Diary of a Norfolk Family. By Mark King Above: Mark King The third Monday of January is according to experts on such matters the most depressing day of the year. It is the day when the buzz of Christmas and the New Year has quickly faded into reality. The Decorations have been put away making the home seem just that little bit duller, the cold dark nights spreads into an endless grey day, and for a lot of people the bills from the previous months exuberance now need paying. But, and as Mary, one of the lead characters in my Daniel Jones series of books, would say there is always a but, January can also be the most quiet of months. With a school age family certain months of the year are hectic, and December is the mother of all hectic months. It is a thirty one day period of endless school concerts, plays, fairs and parties. Add in the shopping for presents, with the writing of cards and wrapping of gifts, then special visits to friends and families, plus all the extra supplies of food and drinks that you need to get in, there never seems to be a day to relax and just do nothing. So on the third Monday of January just remember one thing. You will not be alone in feeling down in the dumps. The vast majority of people will wake up early on that dark and wintery day and will, Just like you, want to curl up again and go back to sleep. Claims are made that the nation needs another Bank Holiday during the year and various dates and names are put forward. Trafalgar Day, Nelson Day or St George’s Day. I think the third Monday of January should be made a compulsory Bank Holiday and every business should shut, including all shops. And that day should be called, Just Do Nothing Day. Then we can all curl up in bed on a Monday morning and not feel guilty about it. Now that sounds good to me! www.always-hanging-around.blogspot.com Follow on twitter: @author_king Twitter: @icenimagazine

Facing A Tough January

Things To Consider Before Your Debt Spirals Out Of Control I did many broadcasts throughout 2016 on debt, the issues around debt and suggestions to help. Here are some of my notes from interviews on BBC 5 Live, BBC Breakfast TV and several local BBC Radio stations around the country. For many homes the dread of being seriously in debt is never very far away, in many cases only the latest pay cheque between them and being homeless. A change in interest rates, divorce, loss of overtime or bonus payments can literally throw a tightly managed household into tragedy. Let's consider some things that may be able to help before your debt spirals out of control: • Concern at what friends, family, colleagues might say or think is often an initial knee jerk reaction to a reduction in spending power. Fear of looking a failure, being diminished in other peoples' eyes can cause otherwise sensible, rational people to hide the truth from others, sometimes even from their partners.

But appreciating that many people are equally constrained by their finances, that their partner will understand and want to help can enable the situation to be dealt with sooner rather than later, before debt starts to mount up excessively. Keeping up appearances can result in rash overspending and further exacerbating the problem. • Detail the household expenses. Many people automatically pay standing orders without thinking too much about them. Appliance insurances, unused memberships may be able to be rationalised and let go. Investigate changing onto cheaper tariffs, using more efficient providers, shopping at less expensive stores. • There may be unconsidered ways of earning money. Many homes have wardrobes full of quality, hardly worn clothes that have simply been outgrown or become outdated or stacks of unused gadgets and appliances stored away in the garage or spare room. These items could be sold online or at a car boot sale. What about a skill or talent such as cake-making, gardening,

dog-walking or decorating that others would be happy to pay for, that could be done part-time, as and when is convenient. Time is something that many people are short of. Offering to help with their time constraints might support a new source of income; things like shopping, collecting children or running errands could support a time-strapped family and earn a little extra money. • Credit cards can be used excessively when income is tight. They're often viewed as money in reserve, as spare available cash until the statements start to arrive and the balance in unable to be reduced. When only minimum payments are made it's virtually impossible to pay off more than the monthly interest; it's like treading water, just about keeping afloat. Speaking to card provider(s) and other creditors like mortgage providers and utilities that are proving hard/impossible to pay sooner rather than later is important. The sole aim of creditors is to get their money back in the most efficient way. By speaking to them as early as possible enables a realistic plan of repayment to be implemented. It's in no ones interests to institute court proceedings so pick up the phone, explain the situation and make an offer to pay what you can afford. Mortgage providers are often prepared to go onto 'interest only' arrangements where they receive the borrowed capital when the property is eventually sold. • Share with friends that you're cutting back a little on your spending. Real friends will be

Issue 45 2017

happy to see you for a lasagna and a bottle of wine at home and not miss the expensive restaurant, or enjoy a cup of coffee instead of a cafe lunch. They may well be happy to scale down their dining out budget too. Girls nights in can be dedicated to fun pampering sessions instead of booking treatments at more expensive beauty salons. • Children are often a major part of household expenses and children's education is often the reason why families choose to live where they do; the catchment area for good schools can be seriously reflected in local house prices. Sometimes though there may need to have a discussion about the impact such a heavy financial commitment is having on the household budget. School fees, uniform, trips and other associated expenses all add together to erode disposable income and may leave the family unable to survive financially. Investigate the possibility of other good schools nearby; do you know anyone who goes there, how easy might it be to change, how might you approach that discussion with your children? Debt can catch us unawares. Something that was just about manageable can gradually spiral and become out-of-control. There are several advisory bodies in the UK that are willing to help. The Citizens Advice Bureau and the National Debt Line are two bodies available to discuss individual cases, but all advice starts with protecting your home, reducing overheads, being honest and facing the fact that this problem needs to be dealt with as soon as possible, before it gets any bigger.

THE ART OF WRITING

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 45 2017

The Art of Writing I am an artist. I am a writer. I make art about writing, by writing about art. Like juice, the content carries flavor, a distilled essence, technicalities extracted, the spectator swallows you down. I attempt a refined assemblage of words to savour, words to taste, with connotation that unravels on your tongue as conversation unfolds and words expand helplessly. This interactive practice makes for an endless cycle of communication, discourse, familiar forms, and questions answered with more questions, each bridging an intimate and engaging experience in a single moment between artist, artwork, and observer. Language in Art is my favourite subject. Questions and comments engraved on exchanged ideas where perspective and definition frame our interpretations, how and what and why? Who is the artist? Who is the writer? Who is looking? Who is reading? Who is writing? An unprepared introduction of myself via my practice on the first day of my MA course crafted a peculiar abstract line that snuck out of my mouth; ‘I don’t so much like reading books, I just like to look at the pages’ (or there about). I’d always known this; aware of the displeasing relationship I had during my childhood with reading, supposing I’d never read anything I was actually interested in before.? I grew fond of the idea of reading about Reading. Reading about Writing. Reading about how we

say what we say and why we say it. Rules, systems and formulas, order and structure; in the same way that the pages were lined up, one after the other in uniform, the content was its equivalent. Through intensive study on the English Language, coined with the formation of a letter, the alphabet, words, sentence structure, definition, context and connotation; what began as a simple line had evolved drastically and became desperately appealing the more I came to understand it. Letters were taking shape in a physical form in unusual contexts, occupying external space before my very eyes. I could stand back from my thoughts and trigger silent reactions from onlookers as they assigned substance and explanation. The idea that Art can be made from words is spellbinding. It brings forth this idea that Art can be more accessible, related to, and not limited to specialist knowledge per se. To speak, to talk, and furthermore, to write about Art, is as much an Art as the Art itself. A translation is a particularly aesthetically pleasing ‘thing’. A script, action, or response to an artwork requires an element of thought and justification, which I would argue forms a mirror, or reflection of said artwork. I must refrain from asking what you envisioned whilst reading this. What was cast in your mind, and whether you went on to write out this image as an afterthought. Whatever you did or didn’t do, try to remember never to feel restricted in your creativity. A new sentence or a great thought can be the most empowering and inducing thing when acted on.

I am the artist that writes.

360fly 4k Reviewed Capturing The World From Every View Point The big buzz word at the moment is virtual reality. It's been around for many years, but the problem has always been making appear real enough to the user to make the brain believe it. The more believable or natural the video appears, the less it affects us with motion sickness and sometimes nausea. To reduce these potential unpleasant side effects, the 'refresh rate' or speed the images change on the screen has been improved, the resolution of the picture has improved and finally the delay between moving your head and the screen updating to reflect this has also improved. Essentially these VR devices have become super computers, charged with providing us with believable experiences.

So, how do we go about producing our own 360 degree footage for displaying on these devices or even on our mobile phones? Well, I have been checking out the 360fly 4k, a device that captures high resolution video in 360 degrees for your to play back on your computer, phone of VR headset. The 360fly 4k is a odd looking device, looking like an oversized dark grey golf ball with a spherical lens at it's top. The device has one triangular shaped button that is used to switch on, record, pause and switch it off again. It lights up in different colours to indicate what it is up to, when it is recording, the light is on a constant red, when not recorded it lights up in blue. There are a wide variety of colours bases on whether it's charging, synching with your computer or even starting up.

well in low light either, so bright days with plenty of light are a must if you are looking to use the camera. The sound quality from the built is mic was ok, but I found it struggled to pickup my voice in normal circumstance. Transferring the video from the camera to your phone, editing and then uploading to Youtube, Facebook or other 360 compatible services ok, but I did have problems connecting to the camera from my phone via WiFi, it constantly refused to connect and became a bit irritating to use.

The 360fly 4k is charged by placing in a magnetic base which stops it rolling around when no in use. It also doubles up as a way of synchronising with your computer when you are ready to share your videos with the world. There are also a number of other add-ons which allow you to connect a second microphone which improves the sound recording quality no end. I found the best way to control the camera and transfer footage was using the free iPhone or Android app, however you should be aware that the video sizes are massive, so make sure you have sufficient data allowances to upload your work to Youtube or Vimeo.

Transferring the video to my Macbook Pro was very slow and editing files using the supplied 360 fly Director was very very slow, taking 3 hours to convert and upload a 15 minute video, but I would hope the software will improve as the product evolves. All in all I loved using the camera, I'm really keen on video technology and I'm looking forward to seeing how the technology evolves. If you are looking for a fun way to record 360 video, then the 360fly 4k is a great device. If you are looking for higher resolution results, then you might want to shop around for a multi lens camera.

The quality of the video is quite good, but not brilliant, the issue with recording 'wrap around' video onto one image sensor is that you are stretching a normal hi-res video around a 360 degree angle, so the quality is much less that you would expect. The camera didn't operate very

LA BELLE ASSIETTE

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Issue 45 2017

Review By ReneĂŠ Jeffery

I love fine dining, sadly now I have 5 children, 3 of which are 7 and under, fine dining hasn’t been something I have been able to participate in. That was until recently. Le Belle Assiette brings the fine dining experience to your own home. All the pleasure of good restaurant quality foods, in the comfort of your own home. Cooked, served and more importantly CLEANED AWAY by an established local chef. I have never had personal experience with having a caterer come to my home before, so this was a new experience and one that I was not let down by. Le Assiette were professional and easy to navigate when booking our meal and they helped us along the way with all questions we had. We were contacted by our chef to arrange all details and eagerly awaited the day for our dinner party to arrive. Our guests were given a glass of spiced apple and ginger beer spritzer on arrival. I personally was slightly dubious at the mix as I really am not a fan of Ginger Beer however, it was perfectly delightful and a cocktail I would have again happily.

The table was set by the chef, and once seated served an Amuse Boche of Spiced Pumpkin Soup, which was served in a small glass cup and was a perfect pre-starter taster. Our Chef Connor Carway-Roe; (who is also a Chef at The Last Bar in Norwich) happily told us the ingredients contained in the very tasty soup, when asked by one of our guests. Our starter was Pan-Fired Mackerel, Beetroot and Horseradish. This dish was probably my least favourite as I am not a great lover of fish. That said it was displayed to its advantage and looked fantastic. The main was what I was most looking forward to Roasted Venison, Parsnip, Wild Mushroom and Pancetta. It blew my socks off! The venison was cooked to perfection, melt-in-the-mouth soft and the Jus complimented the meat so well. The parsnip was creamed and was smooth and the sweetness with the Jus and the Venison was a match made in culinary heaven.

I enjoyed every morsel of the main and could have easily had seconds and thirds of this. The Pre-Dessert was Apple and Elderberry Jelly, which cleansed my palate well after the richness of the Venison and set me up for a nice sweet desert. The Desert was a Blackberry and Lemon Cake with a Vanilla Cream Quenelle and blackberry compote. The sweetness of the cake coupled with the tartness of the blackberries and the richness of the cream was heavenly and by the time the petit fours came out I had to admit defeat and save them for the kids!

The meal was superb and the presentation was what I would expect from a high-end restaurant even michelon star level. To have this in the comfort of my own home was amazing. It left me with only having to smile and enjoy the time chatting to my guests, rather than running about cooking. It’s something I would recommend anyone who is unable to get out to a restaurant to eat for whatever Twitter: @icenimagazine

reason. The experience was unforgettable and I could enjoy the evening knowing my kids were safely tucked up in bed with me there nearby if needed, I didn’t have to drive and therefore could have a few glasses of wine and I could put my feet up after my guests had gone knowing I have no dishes or cleaning to do! Private chef dining - where the restaurant comes to you A welcome alternative to crammed dining rooms, poor lighting and costly wine lists. Nibbles &Tipples Article By Cheryl Cade

New Year, new beers and places to try them. As you are reading this the Turkey has can. We all know how to eat healthy and are happy to have the salad, and yes I will forego the deserts finally been finished (we hope). You like the idea of hiding the Christmas jumper and in most cases, we are all thinking how did we manage to eat all those mince pies/chocolates/ sausage rolls etc?

Now is the time we feel the need to make resolutions and eat healthy. Not me, I’m going to be a bit alternative. At the point when everyone else is abandoning their local eateries and pubs I am going to vow to enter a new pub or restaurant at least once per week. It may not be much but if a few people do it then maybe a few more pubs will stay open. January, February and March are the times when the number of public houses closing rises. But what if you want to be healthy? Can you be healthy and still visit your local? Of course, you

for a while, but what about a beverage?

Lots of pubs now provide a range of teas and coffees, this is not your only choice but if you want to avoid the calories, caffeine and the sugar what do you do?

Some non-alcoholic drinks contain loads of sugar and if you drink sugar free they can have a slight metallic taste, also I do like to match my drink to my food which is not something restaurants or pubs tend to think about. This is why I was pleased to find that the new landlords of The Ship Inn in South Walsham are working on finding soft drinks that taste good but will also match with their menu. The new brewery WildCraft is also looking at non-alcoholic

Cheryl enjoying a pint beverages (not beer) that can accompany food along with their exciting foraged beer range.

I will still drink my beer as well; it is lower in calories than wine or spirits and also lower in alcohol (for its size). Beer is also healthy for you as it contains, vitamins, minerals, fibre (unless its been filtered) and the hops have uplifting essential oils which will help combat that regular occurrence, the new year cold!

There is also a reason that beer is also known as ‘liquid bread’, during days of fasting in the past the clergy were still allowed to drink beer and it was noticed that those who did were healthier than those who fasted with water or wine. Beer will fill you up quicker with your meal, so foregoing that desert will be easier.

Where Should I Go And When? Part 2 As a Travel Agent, I am often asked to find holidays for people at completely the wrong time of year - for instance, people going to Dubai in August - way too hot. Majorca in November to get a tan - it probably wont happen or Iceland to see the Northern Lights in June - you wont see them. I am hoping the following will give you a good idea as to the best time to go to some of the most jaw dropping destinations.

to one of the great wildlife spectacles: the annual migration of over two million wildebeest from the Serengeti plains to the grasslands of the Masai Mara. Combine a Safari followed by some chill out time on the beach in Zanzibar. The sun is always out over Bali’s soft-sand beaches at a time of year before the crowds hit their peak. Planning in advance pays off, as some of my favourite hotels are quick to book up.

JULY If you want a few days away - Lisbon and SEPTEMBER September kicks off the Cascais are high on my list of places to return to. Cascais on the coast and just 20 minutes away from Lisbon has the most amazing restaurants - especially so if you like fish - or steak on a hot stone!! Corsica is perfect right now for those looking for paradisical beaches with turquoise water, although close to mainland Europe it will feel like you are on the other side of the globe!

AUGUST School’s out for summer - of course, Europe for the weather is a great destination. My top 5 would be Turkey, Croatia, Greece, the Balearics or Italy. Perfect weather and amazing food make for a perfect holiday. If you did want to go further afield then Africa plays backdrop

changing of the seasons in many regions, bringing with it shifting climates and bright landscapes. Before the wet season sets in, take a trip to Borneo and observe the orang-utan at the Sepilok sanctuary in Kota Kinabalu. In Peru, September is a good time to take a hike to Incan city in the clouds Machu Picchu while there's still very little rain. And there’s no better place to witness the seasons change than in New England where the changing of the colours transforms everything into a beautiful kaleidoscope of colours.

OCTOBER October is a great time to immerse yourself completely in another culture.

Jordan is one of my favourite places, few tourists, it is very safe and cheap to get to and not too far.

NOVEMBER

Though the temperatures may begin to drop, November still offers plenty of opportunity for active adventure. There are some really good deals to the Caribbean in November, before prices are hiked up for Christmas. Enjoy snorkelling or scuba diving in the warmer temperatures of crystal blue water. Mitsubishi L200 4Life Club Cab (2016) "On road, the L200 4Life Club Cab feels like a big boy’s Tonka toy"

Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups Since launching the fifth incarnation of the Mitsubishi L200, the Japanese automaker has added a Club Cab version of the renowned pickup.

Kit

Four-Up The Mitsubishi L200 4Life Club Cab seats fourup, and is very much a ‘tool’, as it comes in basic 4Life trim only. Don’t get this L200 confused with its L200 Double Cab sibling, which has a more car-like interior.

Rear Doors The 4Life is utilitarian, but comfortable enough for a working vehicle. The biggest difference for this fifth generation L200 Club Cab is that rear passengers enter the vehicle via back-to-front opening doors. They are not obvious as rear doors from the outside, but they give great access to the two individual seating areas in the back. PAGE

36

If you don’t need to carry anyone in the rear, then you can just flip the seats up to make more space for loading.

Twitter: @icenimagazine

There is a lot of space up front for the driver and front seat passenger, and the L200 4Life Club Cab’s dash is made of tough, but no-frills plastic. The same can be said for the switchgear - much of which is refreshingly simple to use. The instrumentation is much like that of a car you’d drive in the late 80s. However, back then you’d think it was the height of luxury to have electric windows or air conditioning. Well, the L200 4Life comes with both as standard - and there’s even a bit of modern tech - in the form of Bluetooth, a USB port and two airbags.

MOTORING REVIEW

www.icenimagazine.co.uk

Engine

Issue 45 2017

Power is a simple affair, too. You get one engine choice - a 151PS 2.4-litre turbo diesel unit, hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission. The L200 also comes, as you might expect of a hardworking pick-up, with four-wheel-drive. You can swap between two and four-wheel-drive by using Mitsubishi’s ‘Easy Select’ system. This is basically a knob situated by the L200’s gear-lever.

too fast. Likewise, the oil-burner only starts making that familiar diesel din if you stamp on the gas; otherwise the pickup is refined - for an entry-level machine. It’s also economical, returning an average of 40.9mpg. Only the stiff manual gearshifts and heavy clutch rain on the driving experience - making you feel as though you’ve been for a workout after a stint in stop-start traffic.

Off-Road

Payload

Compared with the superior version - Mitsubishi’s ‘Super Select’ four-wheel drive set-up, the ‘Easy Select’ system can’t operate all the L200 4Life’s four wheels at high road speeds. But this is no deal breaker as it has a proper differential lock, which is far better for coping with hardcore offroading. Indeed, off-tarmac, the L200 clambers and tramples over everything admirably. There’s loads of control when descending a hill if you use the pick-up’s low-range mode in the fourwheel drive settings. All you must do is stick the Mitsubishi into first gear, lift off the clutch, remove your feet from the pedals, and the L200 will drive down in a nicely controlled way.

Verdict

On-Road On road, the L200 4Life Club Cab feels like a big boy’s Tonka toy. It’s heavy, but not unwieldy, due to the accurate steering. It does lean heavily in the corners - but only if you push the L200

This Club Cab is a practical vehicle if you need to carry big loads. The payload capacity is 1,045kg and the L200 4Life’s load bed is 1,850mm in length, 1,470mm in width and 475mm in height. This Mitsubishi is also able to haul up to 3.0 tonnes, so it’s a top tow truck, too.

The best thing about the L200 4Life Club Cab is how little it costs to buy. £23,083 on-the-road is not a lot to fork out for such a workhorse especially one with decent fuel economy, and four-up cabin space. Subsequent albums; Diamonds in the Dirt, Almost Always Never and Songs From The Road followed and saw Joanne’s fan base rise globally. In 2014, Joanne reunited with her White Sugar album producer Jim Gaines and recorded her new studio album in Memphis. That album entitled The Dirty Truth was a return to Joanne’s original sound that mixes rock riffs with blues influences. The album was released in the UK in September 2014 on Joanne’s own independent boutique label Axehouse Records to critical acclaim across the world and has already become her biggest selling album to date. Joanne is a bona fide star with famous fans across the guitar world including Joe Bonamassa (who described her as a Superstar in waiting), Tedeschi Trucks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Wilko

She performed the title track ‘Dyin To Know’ of new top 20 album Wild, and also Gershwin's ‘Summertime’ with Jools accompanying on piano. The new album ‘Wild’ is out now.

Lord Russell Baker of Little Moulton has successfully organised and run the Norwich Charity Darts Masters for the past two years, all in aid of the 'Lord Baker Community Fund' managed by the Norfolk community foundation. The community fund aids other local charities through grants, with money raised from events such as this. Charities helped in the past and who will receive donations from the 2017 Norwich Charity Darts Masters include; Star Throwers Cancer care and support, Norfolk Accident Rescue Service’s (NARS) who's patron is Lord Baker himself; Chapel Road School for physically and mentally handicapped children in Attleborough, and The Norfolk Community Foundation. In addition, funding is also provided to aid local community projects where invitations are encouraged each year for grants of up to £1,000. In 2015 the Norwich Charity Darts Masters raised over £10k for these charities which was followed by whooping 12k in 2016. Raising over £22k in the last two years, we can't wait to see how much we can raise in 2017. Megan Rooney who is working on an Internship at Amber Dew Events said, “I am proud to work for such a charitable company. Having just moved to the area for university I think the event gives an amazing community feel and the charity work Lord Baker has done is incredible.
