ell summer is truly here! I get asked quite a bit to describe the average ICED* reader, well I’d like the readers are like myself, we work our a** off in the week and in the weekend we party even harder!! So we are a mag where work and play meet and we can help with both. There is so much negativity in the news these days, its either someone is going on strike or half the country is drowning under floods, but considering at what’s happening to the rest of world, we’re in pretty good shape! Well October was a great month, thanks to Model Bottle Store for hosting an awesome golf day and Party Park for a Beer Fest to remember. I think if I could be a super hero, I’d be Captain Beer!

Grimehouse

o every now and then we hear a style of music that completely blows our mind and rips our hearts across the dance floor. For me, that style of music is Dubstep. As I explored into the international scene and got to know the cool cats controlling this unique style of music worldwide, I decided to check out some of our local talent and what I found was a not so shy, outspoken, tattoo’d bad a$$ named ‘Grimehouse’. So I decided to get together with this Cape Town sensation over a cup of tea and a selection of biscuits to chat about the SA Dubstep scene. 1. You have accomplished a lot in your illustrious career as a DJ. From being named the top Dubstep/Drumstep artist in South Africa by ‘DJ Mag’ to getting signed to one of the world’s biggest record labels ‘CR2’. To doing remixes for international artists such as DjChuckie. Tell us how did you first get into Dubstep/Drumstep/Drum and Bass? I found the Dubstep Genre really late, one night just strolling around town looking for a club I stumbled into an event called “Rubadub” and heard these amazing energetic basslines and Robotic noises and immediately fell in love, not only with the vibe and energy but also the production techniques used. That night I went home and started writing my own stuff. 2. What has been your favorite Gig/festival to perform at and why? Rubadub because it was my birthplace and Rock The River because I usually play on a laptop and never play my own music because of crazy stage fright, but when I got on stage at Rock the River there were no plugs for my laptop and all I had was a few CD’s of all my own songs so I was forced into playing a full set with it and the people looked like they were enjoying it . 3. What would you say your greatest accomplishment is thus far? Musically I would say getting all my releases this year so far into the BEATPORT Dubstep and Drum n

Bass charts. It was a major goal of mine 4. What can we expect from Grimehouse in the months to come? More pranks on random people and stealing your bicycles outside your house. I am sponsored by Monster Energy Drink now so will be doing a lot more with them, and I’ll still be trying to make music as much as possible and waiting at home for the next club to phone and book me 5. Have you got any plans on bringing your unique style of music to the Vaal Triangle area? I play under another alias, Psycho Keaton and play hardstyle music. (Look it up you you haven’t seen or heard of it yet) anyway, I got booked to play in your lovely area under that alias. At a club called “Mango’s” I got there and they were playing random Afrikaans music and old people were doing indoor windsurfing moves!! I was like WTF , then the promoter took me downstairs to this basement like place and there were over 1000 people in heavy underground mode! It was seriously one of the best sets of my life. Then I played at another club in the Vaal about a year later (Livewire) and it was also really epic!! – I ain’t no stranger to the Vaal 6. Describe yourself in one word. Random 7. From my experience, Dubstep parties tend to get out of control. Have you had any interesting experiences with fans or haters? The other day some guy raged so hard he whipped out a gun. People went scattering!! And then I would love for you all to watch this video - http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=PVF8WzZoo8w – as for haters, I get enough of them but they are not worth mentioning 8. If you had the opportunity to do a collaboration with any artist dead or alive whom would that be? Tupac! Interview by Adam Boyd.

Model Golf Day

The Heels

at a fashion house with a bunch of women on a daily IThiswork basis and my favourite day of the week has to be a Monday. is our time to catch up on weekend gossip and mishaps.

Ranging between the ages of 21 and 35 years old, our stories are always ones filled with laughter – From break ups and make ups, to wardrobe dilemmas and our latest “crushes and flushes”, Mondays are definitely great days for coffee breaks. Sitting with a few of the girls a couple of weeks back we got onto the topic of stilettos and how these beautiful calf enhancing magicians have caused us all some embarrassing moments and sometimes even a nail or two. We have all, at least once in our lives, worn a pair of heels that have resulted in us walking like flesh eating zombies from Wrong Turn, hunched over and stumbling around in pain but too proud to replace our 9inch stilts with more comfortable alternatives. A friend of mine, let’s call her “Jennifer” for this story; was out with a couple of friends enjoying an evening of dancing when suddenly she realised she could not move, her heel had wedged its way into a sliding door rail, unable to free herself from the “trap” her friend got down and tugged and pulled until eventually the shoe was free – But not unharmed, the heel tip had snapped off and now posed a new problem. Trying to walk and dance with no heel should be an Olympic sport, whereby you receive a medal if you survive the first hour. A few months ago I decided to go party with my girlfriends;

a night of dinner and dancing sounded enticing and gave me the opportunity to show off my newest, most comfortable (Did I mention most expensive) heels and after only a few dance moves disaster struck and my heel broke and was not fixable. The best part about it was that the heel did not fully snap off, instead stayed attached to the shoe like an unwanted cling on causing some seriously crazy walking manoeuvres and unexplainable photo posing – Note to self always carry a spare pair of shoes with you. (Oh and never believe the shop attendant when she tries to tell you that the price is worth it as the shoes will last a lifetime) Because nine times out of ten…They don’t! Aardklop Festivities

ardklop is an annual arts festival hosted in the North A Western town of Potchefstroom. Afrikaans arts festivals are becoming more scares every year, aardklop is the biggest Afri-

kaans arts festival in the highveld area and stills sees support from many South Africans. Aardklop introduces patriotism in the form of art, whether it be theatre, music or a flea market that sells mostly South African inspired products. From food stalls to mampoer tasting, there is something for each generation. Aardklop is known well amongst the youngsters and mostly students as a gigantic party fest, with bands, beer tents and cheap food. This year Aardklop had changed a little more than the previous years with the lay out of the terrain. This year an entrance fee had to be paid to gain entrance to the flea market that also had access to the beer tent, where most people could be found during the day, the night and most probably in the early hours of the morning. But not to fuss to much about Aardklop as a party, but rather an arts festival, there were theatre performances the full duration of the festival, there were art exhibitions and also , musical performances for every age group. During the four days of Aardklop there were well known bands performing on bourbon street, where the main festival usually occurs, there were artists such as Van Coke Kartel, Jack Parow, Glaskas and many more. There were also unknown artists that performed at some places in bourbon street, for some new musical exploration. Aardklop is a family festival where by day you can enjoy watching rugby in the beer tent with your family and walking through the flea market and by night you could dress yourself in a party suite and hang out with your friends, meet new people and enjoy some entertainment that was completely mahala, such as people enjoying their self a little bit to much, and created

a dance floor on tables, people singing as if they were the next Britney Spears and many more free entertainment. So next year, join in the arts and festivities. Bring along the whole family and enjoy our heritage in a great way. Till next year aardklop, cheerio. By Tamen de Lange.

Going For Broke(rs)/Embrace Change

n recent times there has been much debating about “Labour Brokers” Iment, being banner. Certain high profile people echoing this very sentiwhilst government departments saying outright that it will not

happen; Unions calling for it and the press having a field day. In short there is great division on this view point, but one overriding reality. The L.R.A (Labour Relations Act) already has rules and guidelines that govern employment relationships. The Basic Conditions of Employment and Main Agreements/Sectorial determinations lay out minimum employment conditions and the bargaining councils

along with the department of labour have durestriction to govern all employment relationships. What we need is a mature approach from all parties to both embrace and enforce current legislation, instead of focussing on elements that will ultimately hurt the economy and inevitably the people. Rulings, such as hereunder illustrated embrace the heart of what I believe is the true problem and will hopefully drive change in industry; to the point where fair practise is forced.

Labour Court recognises vulnerable workers’ plight hile amendments to the laws on regulating labour brokers are far W from finalisation, the Department of Labour said on Monday it was happy the courts were extending protection to vulnerable workers in

labour broking arrangements. A recent labour court ruling recognised the vulnerability of workers in temporary employment as the “weakest and most vulnerable” in the triangular relationship encompassing the worker, the labour broker and its client. It held that arbitrators and courts should not take all labour broking arrangements as “presumptively valid on face value as soon as a signed contract is put up by an employer”. Regulating the labour broking environment has seen an emotional response from all quarters, with business and opposition parties warning that the changes would result in job losses, and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) calling for an outright ban of the practice. But at the end of last month, the Labour Court in Cape Town handed down a judgment that showed an increasing willingness by the court to go beyond the “contractual relationship” between an employee and a labour broker. The case involved an employee of the paper giant Mondi, who was hired by the company, but was told to sign a contract with a labour broker after two years, which he did. The employee, Khululekile Dyokwe, continued to work for Mondi for five and a half years and was then dismissed. He referred the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to determine who his true employer was at the time of his dismissal. The CCMA found that the employer was the labour broker, Adecco, who after Mr Dyokwe’s dismissal from Mondi told him he was too old for the company to place him in other employment. He then took the matter to the Labour Court for review. The Labour Court found that Mondi was the employer, and set aside the CCMA’s earlier decision. The CCMA was also ordered to arbitrate the

dismissal of Mr Dyokwe between him and Mondi. A CCMA spokeswoman said on Monday the matter was set down for arbitration next month. Imraan Mahomed, labour director at attorneys Eversheds, says the judgment shows the courts are prepared to come to the assistance of employees in the tripartite relationship and that they are prepared to “make every effort to afford labour protection” to vulnerable workers. He says the judgment sends a “strong signal” to labour brokers and their clients to make sure their relationships are “properly ordered in terms of the law”. “If not, the client will face unfair dismissal and other forms of employment related liability,” he says. Audrey Johnson, senior associate at law firm Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs says that the importance of the judgment is in its view of the matter “beyond the contractual relationship”. Cosatu’s parliamentary officer, Prakashnee Govender, says the case goes to the “heart” of how labour brokers work. She says they create “legal fictitious employment” which places a “wedge” between the workers and their “true employer”, which in turn affects the workers’ ability to assert their rights and reduces the “quality” of their employment. Ms Johnson says this particular case shows that the transfer of employment to the labour broker is a “sham”. Department of Labour director for collective bargaining Thembinkosi Mkalipi, responding to the judgment on the previous Monday, said it “confirmed” the department’s intentions in terms of the proposed labour amendments before Parliament and once the amendments took effect, workers would be able to rely on existing legislation for protection without taking the matter to court. He said the department would like the amendments to be finalised as soon as possible. This article appeared in The Business Day Newspaper on 28 August 2012.

Dating in the Vaal, or dating in the dark? I

s dating in the dark becoming all to ordinary? Guys keeping secrets in the dark, girls keeping secrets in the dark, no more honesty. How does a relationship work under these circumstances? If there is no honesty in a relationship, there can be no trust and like everyone states without trust a relationship can’t work. I have come across to many cases here in the Vaal where there are external strains on a relationship, whether it be an ex-girlfriend, parents or plain dishonesty. All of these cases have led to a determination of a relationship, and all of this comes down to either trust or honesty. A relationship is between two people, not more, no one has the right to mingle in your relationship. If there are external strains on you and your partner there is nothing you can do alone

about this situation, you and your partner have to come to a certain agreement where there is mutual trust and honesty. So girls, guys. Let those external strains take the high road, if your relationship is so important to you, you will find a way. Never make any excuses for why you should be allowed to do something that is not healthy for your relationship. If your partner is persistent towards one situation, and you know it is bothering them, find a way to firstly make them happy and not yourself. I mean that is a huge aspect of a relationship, selflessness. Do your relationship a favour and let the unnecessary strains be on their way. May all be well and may all relationships last till infinity and beyond. By Tamen de Lange.

A Law For Women I

n the crime capital of South Africa, I think it is wise for women to start familiarising themselves with the law and what women are entitled to that is coherent with the law. In today’s society no women are safe, sometimes even in the line of the law, women are threatened and helpless. I think it is our duty as women to get to know the law, let us fight crime in our own way, by starting to protect ourselves and our rights. This is a new generation where women have the power to protect themselves, but some still chose not to. In this article some guidelines will be given for women and how to prevent them from becoming a victim in jurisdiction when they are not. Some women do feel violated when a peace officer requests certain actions and expect women to do so. In order to prevent violation, women need to understand that there are laws that apply to certain situations. In the event of a women being searched for legal purposes, a female peace

officer needs to conduct the body search and the search of the belongings. If this law is not obeyed by officers of the law, a law suit can be filed against the peace officer who was in line of duty. Women truly feel unsafe, especially at night whilst driving alone. In the scenario of a female driver being requested to pull over and the driver does feel very unsafe and uncomfortable in the situation. The female driver is allowed to contact the police station in the district and request that she feels unsafe and will pull over at the next police station. Women need to be sure of what their rights are and how they are actually privileged in the line of the law. So ladies, do it for yourself and your safety. Study the laws that protect women and also in this way we as women can make our own change in crime rate and preventing crimes to come your way. By Tamen de Lange.

THE SHOWREEL MOVIE REVIEW

BY SAJEN

American Pie: The Reunion (7/10) American Pie: The Reunion is the fourth installment in the American Pie theatrical series, thirteen years after graduating, Jim, Kevin, Oz, Finch and Stifler have moved on with their adult lives and the responsibilities that come with it. Life didn’t turn out the way they expected to be, being kings in high school they find themselves lagging in the real world. Jim and Michele are married and struggling to find a spark in their sex life, Oz is a sports broadcaster, Kevin is a stay-athome husband, Finch travels around the world looking for his true love and Stifler is a temp at an Investment firm and is constantly verbally abused by his employer. When former class-mate and the one half of the MILF team John (John Cho- Harold and Kumar) arranges their class reunion, the gang is reunited and realise just how old they have become. Stifler decides to throw a party and things go haywire from there on. American Pie: The Reunion is packed with laughs and just as funny as the first three films, the difference is this time that they deal more meaningful issues then just getting laid. Those who watched the first American Pie when in high school will enjoy this movie thoroughly.

Taken 2 (7/10) After the events that occurred in France, former CIA operative Bryan Mills becomes the target of the head of the Albanian group of sex traffickers. After completing a case in Turkey, Mills is paid a surprise visit by his daughter and ex-wife. Murad, the employer of the men and father of a victim whom Bryan killed by electrocution, states that they will find Bryan to avenge the deaths of their loved ones. This time Mill’s ex-wife is taken she has a limited time to live as she is tortured. Mills has to make use of his special set of skills that he has acquired to save his family once again and end this once and for all. Taken 2 is much like the first movie, jam-packed with action and thrills. If you enjoyed the first film you will definitely enjoy this well-made sequel.
