hope everyone had a safe but joyous December! We certainly did and we were a bit busy, from taking photos at venues with Santa around the Vaal, to taking photos with the Meyerton Fire Department as the dropped off toys by kids; it certainly was a December to remember! In this month’s issue we have an interview with renowned TV and film actor, Luthuli Dlamini, a write up on the Lady Gaga concert, and an interview with Sowetan rock band ReeBurth! We also have an interview with Miss Gauteng, she also happens to be one of the models on the cover! And because it’s January and so many people will be doing the New Year’s resolution thing (hence the cover, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No evil!) we decided to find out where its origins lies. And if you’re still decid-

Congratulations Elize van der Schyff! You have won a Bell’s hamper, compliments of Bell’s and ICED* Magazine!

Adam Boyd interviews Tumi from Soweto rock band ‘Ree-Burth’ How did the Ree-Burth first come about? ReeBurth was the brain child of Vocalist Nathi louw. For a long time he would play music that he was feeling around Soweto to one day be told that what he was playing was in fact rock and roll. He then started researching rock and rock music and found that he would need a band. And so his search began. First with Guitarist Tshepo Mohape then drummer Oscar Lempane and Bassist “smokey” (Just smokey) The last addition to the family was second guitarist Tumi Mothei Being 1 of the first rock bands to come out of Soweto, how has the youth in Soweto responded to rock music and the band? The youth took to it very well. Kids were and still are looking for something unique and expressive and that is what rock is to them. So they would throw their hand in the air and swing their heads free of inhibitions without a history of the music and just purely enjoy it. It was the older folks that just called it noise at first!!! But they have since come around Which artists are your main influences? We are all influenced by many different artists. I think this is a key factor in the unique sound of the band. To name a few the spectrums ranges from as far back as Jimmi Hendrix. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, coming into Nirvana, closer being Killswitch engages. Protest the hero. We all even listen out of the genre to the likes of Miles Davis, Prince, Bob Marley and many more. If you could collaborate with any artist (Dead or alive) whom would

that be? Die Antwoord What are Ree-Burth’s plans for the future? We will continue to release new singles. Music videos and tour the country. We would like to take our music up Africa. America and Europe can wait their turn… we want to rock out Africa first. What has been your greatest show to date with the band? Our most legendary has to be 2009 OppiKoppi main stage. Prime time slot, screaming crowd, now that’s real Rock and Roll. Are there other rock bands developing the Soweto area and do you believe that Ree-burth was the driving force behind this? Yes there are bands springing up. It’s great. We can’t take credit for that though. We would be humbled to know if some bands had found inspiration from us but everyone has their own path to travel. Describe yourself in one word Sex! Interview by: Adam Boyd

New Year’s resolution N hard!!

ow a lot of people I know, are promising to either quit a bad habit (like smoking) or to do something more positive, like go to the gym a few times a week, that was mine, but it’s damn

A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit. A key element to a New Year’s resolution that sets it apart from other resolutions is that it is made in anticipation of the New Year and new beginnings. People committing themselves to a New Year’s resolution generally plan to

do so for the whole following year.

The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts and the Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knights took the “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. So every year we make these Resolutions in an attempt to improve ourselves cause deep down we know what we are doing right and wrong, these Resolutions is our sub-conscious telling us what we need to fix! So I hope this year to listen to my sub-conscious and follow through as I hope you do too. And good Luck to all of you that have taken on a New Year’s Resolution or 2 or 3 or..................................! By Franc dos Santos.

New Year’s

Got some love for Gaga?

A

n inspirational, very talented Lady Gaga visited our beautiful country for the first time November of 2012. Yes, it has already passed, so sad for some little monsters. I was privileged enough to attend the mind blowing concert after some very anxious and long awaited months of waiting. I just had to see what all the fuss was about. And to say the least I would watch the same show more than a hundred times. The fuss, the articles and all the best reviews couldn’t explain how astonishing Lady G really is on stage and not even to mention the decor and the dance performances. Oh and let’s not forget the wonderful fashion – a wardrobe that no one else but Lady Gaga can pull off. At first the stage was dark; the crowd filled with anticipation to be blown away by Madame Gaga’s astonishing stage decor, and man was it worth the wait. On stage a mid-evil gaga story appeared. A castle built on stage; it really felt as if you were entering the contested territory between reality and fantasy. And then... there she was, entering on a pitch black horse, well a human horse, but it could just as well have been the real thing. The queen of pop welcomed South Africa just as a queen would. Her opening performances introduced the crowd to an incredible voice, something similar to what I think an angel

sounds like. “Oh boy, this woman can sing”, this is a thought that probably crossed every single persons mind in the crowd. The castle, in which her band was hid away (yes, Gaga rolls with a live band), opened and closed from time to time. Gaga blew away the crowed with a stunning body and put all those rumours about her weight gain to rest. The dancing, the crowd interaction and a ten minute inspirational speech made this a memorable night. Gaga truly showed her appreciation for her fans when she invited four lucky concert–goers or rather little monsters on stage. They sat with her through a whole song and the little monsters definitely went gaga over Gaga. It was an unforgettable night filled with little monsters dressed as the Mother G. Pink gaga wigs filled the Soccer city arena in no time, and where definitely so sad to leave. But I am sure that no one could ever forget a night like that, just like me they would live to tell their grand children about the most amazing concert they have ever seen, by the most amazing artist. Cheers to Gaga, and may she visit South Africa again soon. So put your paws up little monsters. By Tamen de Lange

90.6FM relocation plans for 2013 C

hange is a very important factor in the growth of any company! So once again 90.6 FM STEREO is relocating our studio and offices to a more convenient address in Vanderbijlpark. As we develop the number 1 Radio Station in the Vaal, it is important to both our loyal listeners and our ever growing advertising base to see growth and improvement of our product. Increase staff obviously requires more and larger office space. Brand new ultra modern studios will be bigger with more space and more technology to enable a clear radio station on the 90.6 FM air waves. As we once again re-invent 90.6 FM STEREO, to keep abreast of Radio growth world wide, we must be more informative and more important,

more interactive with both our listeners and advertisers alike. World wide radio has changed so much since the inception of 90.6 FM STEREO, but our new offices at 11 Edison Boulevard will allow us to keep fully up to date with the trends and technology of 2013, thus giving our listeners the radio service they have come to expect, deserve and love over the past 18 years with 90.6 FM STEREO. So please, watch out for the bigger improved 90.6 in Edison Boulevard Vanderbijlpark from January 2013. 90.6 FM STEREO promise to provide the Vaal Triangle and outlying regions with the best Radio Service we can offer. rofessor Tim Noakes is the director of the Sports Science Institute at the University of Cape Town and author of the cult book, Lore of Running. He is highly respected, both at home and internationally, but has recently ignited a highly controversial debate. Although continually stating that his is a “view” that requires further corroborative evidence, in recent interviews across all major media platforms, Noakes has indicated that he thinks that the traditional “high carb” or “prudent, heart-healthy” diet (originally advocated by the US government in the late 1970s) is responsible for the massive increase in obesity, and its related diseases, over the last thirty years. According to Noakes, not only has this led to an obesity epidemic, but it has probably led to an increased susceptibility to pre-diabetes and diabetes in the general population. The solution (again most experts, including Noakes concede that more research is required) is a low carbohydrate high fat (LCHF) diet, especially for individuals at risk of diabetes and/ or who struggle to lose weight.

Behind the scenes: Timetable Interview with Luthuli Dlamini

What is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on set? I sneezed and a bubble bogey came out my nose, ha ha ha What is the strangest thing that female fans have done around you? I had one woman claim that I got her pregnant , oh and this one girl put her nickers in my jacket pocket, they are very sneaky. How long have you been in the movie industry? Close to 15 years, fuck im old. Ha ha ha What do you do to relax after shooting a movie or series? I chill with the family, my kids and I write anything from scripts to stories. How and when were you discovered? I was discovered by accident, I went to a modelling agency and they said I was too ugly to model, so they sent me to an agent, we got along and then he sent me for an audition for the drama series THE RES on sabc 2. What movie/series can people expect to see you in soon? Jacob’s Cross, Scandal, oh and Intersection 2 You are a very relaxed guy, what is your secret? I don’t take myself too seriously, I love what I do, and I’m an adrenalin junkie. What is the one thing that you absolutely and without fail have to do before you start shooting? I have to have a shit What message do you have for aspiring actors trying to make it in the industry? Do it for the passion, for no other reason What was the one role you had the most fun playing and why? It would have to be chris in blue orange, he was a west Londoner who claimed idi amin was his father, he was bipolar with borderline schizophrenia and was arrested for doing weird things with citrus fruit. Interview by Devon.

THE SHOWREEL MOVIE REVIEW Prometheus 8/10 A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Director Ridley Scott delivers a fantastic film in Prometheus and stays true to his 1979 film Alien, the style is remarkably similar and the build-up of intensity is faultless. This is a great movie to rent as it transcends the typical horror genre to a whole new level. Prometheus is cold and thrilling and makes a good rental choice for old fans of the Alien series as well as the “scary movie” for movie night. A stellar performance from Michael Fassbender (X-men: First Class).

Ted 7/10

As the result of a childhood wish, John Bennett’s teddy bear, Ted, came to life and has been by John’s side ever since - a friendship that’s tested when Lori, John’s girlfriend of four years, wants more from their relationship. This is Seth MacFarlane’s directorial debut for feature film and he impresses. Macfarlane the creator of The Family Guy and American Dad series doesn’t hold back in Ted, he writes, directs and voiced the vulgar, weed smoking Teddy bear. The storyline is admirable and reminds me of movies from the 90s. The humour is second to none and will leave you in stitches. Be warned this movie is not for kids and has its fair share of swearing.

Emerald Beach Party Game Review - Dishonored

T

his month we’re taking a look at Dishonored.....oooh.......say it again...... Take Skyrim and combine it with Assasins Creed and you get this gem of a game! You play as Corvo Attano – The Royal Protector of the Empress and you have been framed her murder. You are now out to clear your name and avenge her death.....bring on the fun. You have the power to turn people to ash, send rats to do your “dirty work” - hehe and pretty much go where you want and do what you want, but be warned, everything you do comes with a consequence and affects the game play further down the line...... hint – don’t do what I did and kill everyone. You have options, you either knock everyone unconscious or kill them – it’s all up to you. The city of Dunwall has an awesome layout, you can sneak around, jump around on rooftop and the side quests are fun and rewarding. You have the ability to upgrade your skills and spells using “bone charms” or just buying better gear, I mean what’s more fun than teleporting in behind an enemy, killing or pick pocketing him and vanishing again. No matter how many times you play the game, there’s always a different outcome, so it will keep you busy(Sorry, Franc, I know it took a while with the review, but I had an empress to avenge!). This game is fun, it’s refreshing and it’s AWESOME! If you are a fan of Skyrim and Assassins Creed – BUY THIS GAME! It was also one of the nominees for game of the year for 2012 – need I say more! It’s available on all platforms and at BT Games and has an M rating – Yes, mommy has to hold your hand while playing! By Corry Roets.

Interview: Miss Gauteng So Alicia, from what age have you been entering beauty pageants? To be quite honest, I wasn’t actually the beauty queen type when I was younger; I was kind of a tomboy haha! It was only from the age of 16 that I got interested in the idea of being a beauty queen. What is your ultimate goal in the beauty pageant world, a date with Mr South Africa, hehehe? Haha I would say a date with Andrew Govender is more a dream than a goal haha...but any pageant lover would agree when I say the ultimate goal is to win Miss South Africa and then represent South Africa in the Miss Universe competition. I’m sure there’s a lot of prize’s to be won in these pageants, but do you get more attention from the opposite sex as well mmmm? Haha I will be lying if I said no! All of the sudden the favourite pickup line becomes “if I’m a province, will you be my Miss”!!! And the general conversation starter is “ooooh so you’re Miss Gauteng”... then my urge to be more sarcastic tends to get a bit bigger hehe. What’s the hardest thing about being a beauty queen? Without any doubt it’s definitely trying to live up to the standards of a beauty queen, which everyone has a different idea of being a beauty queen. It’s really demanding sometimes, so you have to be strong (heart), able, consistent, elegant and charming at all times, and whilst having all those qualities you still have to look your best! But to me it’s just about being yourself. I hope to live up to the beauty queen standards. Has your life changed since you won the crown (do you need a bodyguard, we can organise!)? Haha no luckily not, but thank you! My life has definitely changed, in the sense of; I look at things from a whole new perspective. All the children I’ve helped or put a smile on their faces has a definitely influenced my outlook on life. So what are your goals for 2013? I would love to get a big sponsor for the Lerato Children’s home in Meyerton and to just change more lives as I go, not necessarily with money or big things, just by the way I live my life, but most importantly to live according to God’s will. Do you have a role model? My famous role model is Melinda Bam, the current Miss South Africa. She is so beautiful, graceful and elegant and she is always friendly and polite, but my main role model is my Dad. He showed me how to be the best person I can be and to never do anything in my life halfway, to do it to the fullest of my ability and to keep going till the very last bit!
