elcome to February! The month of grand gestures of love! I wonder if either Romeo or Juliet were born in February, would definitely explain a lot!!

Well if you’re planning a romantic night with your significant other, take a look at our “RED” there’s plenty of venues to choose from. On the sporting side of the things, Bafana kept the flag by beating Anglo 2-0; I just hope they keep the faith in themselves because we’ll be all the way behind them. February is also the start of the Vodacom Super Rugby league, so ladies expect rugby fever to hit your men hard!! We also have the Vaal River Fashion & Beauty week starting on the 6th at Emerald, looking forward to that as it’s our first time there. We also have a write up on Henley Boxing Club, where they try and help focus and train

AMSTEL WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU WINNER

Congratulations Angie! You have won the Amstel ‘What’s new with you’ competition!

Who is Cupid?

I

n Roman mythology, Cupid (Latin Cupido, meaning “desire”) is the god of desire, affection anderotic love. He is often portrayed as the son of the goddess Venus, with a father rarely mentioned in ancient Roman sources. His Greek counterpart is Eros. Cupid is also known in Latin as Amor (“Love”). The Amores (plural) or amorini in the later terminology of art history are the equivalent of the Greek Erotes. Although Eros appears in Classical Greek art as a slender winged youth, during the Hellenistic period he was increasingly portrayed as a chubby boy. During this time, his iconography acquired the bow and arrow that remain a distinguishing attribute; a person, or even a deity, who is shot by Cupid’s arrow is filled with uncontrollable desire. The Roman Cupid retains these characteristics, which continue in the depiction of multiple cupids in both Roman art and the later classical tradition of Western art.

ICED MAGAZINE

Cupid’s ability to compel love and desire plays an instigating role in several myths or literary scenarios. In Vergil’s Aeneid, Cupid prompts Dido to fall in love with Aeneas, with tragic results. Ovid makes Cupid the patron of love poets. Cupid is a central character, however, in only the traditional tale of Cupid and Psyche, as told by Apuleius. Cupid was a continuously popular figure in the Middle Ages, when under Christian influence he often had a dual nature as Heavenly and Earthly love, and in the Renaissance, when a renewed interest in classical philosophy endowed him with complex allegorical meanings. In contemporary popular culture, Cupid is shown shooting his bow to inspire romantic love, often as an icon of Valentine’s Day. Taken from Wikipedia

All is fair in love and war F ebruary hasn’t always been my favourite month due to a certain day called Valentine’s Day! I have done some silly things on this day on my quest for true love and I have had some silly things done to me, because love does not only bring out the best in people but also the worst!! I once had a crush on this one girl when I was younger, problem was, so did my friend, so when I found out he had bought her a dozen red roses like I had, I made sure his flowers got “lost” and she received mine. But my plan backfired because she ended up with him but we still managed to keep our friendship. I also lost a valentines because the girl I was seeing at that time believed a rumour about me (I later found out it was started by a girl that liked me and wanted me as her

Valentines, needless to say that didn’t happen!!). In movies and books you always see the right guy ends up with the right girl, but the truth is, you have to fight for who and what you want in life. You don’t need any under handed tricks to beat your competition, but you do need to be honest and open with yourself and her. Because love is one of the most precious gifts between a man and a woman and should be celebrated all year round and not just 1 day of it. And for those of us spending it alone, I think it’s also the perfect day to go out and meet someone, because Valentines isn’t just for the couples, it’s for everyone searching for their better half. Good luck and happy hunting!!!!

Adam Boyd interview’s Hard Rock Heroes Hiccup

How and when did Hiccup begin? It began like most bands begin or so I think. A bunch of friends who had a dream and looking for a platform to release some youthful angst and creative vision. That was almost a decade ago. Since then so many brothers have shared and parted ways from the collective dream. The format we have now as a three piece outfit is going on its third year now. What bands influence your style of music? System Of A Down, Foo Fighters, Muse, Queens of the Stone age, Tool, Perfect Circle, Metallica, Korn, Slipknot, Springbok Nude Girls, F0kofpolisiekar, Chevelle, The Narrow, Prodigy, Nine Inch Nails, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Dire Straits, Bob Marley, Rolling Stones and many more. Hiccup keep a busy schedule as a full band, but between yourself and your brother Robbie, you also keep an intense acoustic gig schedule. Do you think its important for local bands to scale down to acoustic shows and expand their skills in a different area? I think that bands should do whatever comes naturally to them, but in the same time not to be scared to try new things and styles. We started the acoustic sets because we realized that it opened us up to so many places that would have been impractical for the full band to perform with drums. It is very unfortunate that the music scene in this country does not cater for everyone, especially if you look at the venues that are available to play. Breaking the market is always a challenge and the acoustic show does seem more “commercially” friendly. I really don’t like playing a show without our drummer Jones. He is a bloody machine behind the kit.

What have you got planned for the future? Finally releasing our album and touring. Already making plans for the second one. We have learned so much doing everything independently, but we will surely do things a lot differently the next time around. We have this vision of creating a flow of all the varied styles and genres we hold dear and creating something new. Plans for a second video is also on the board. What keeps you motivated? The music does that for me. Nothing beats writing a song and watching it take shape and evolve. The other big motivator is the fans. Its always such an honor to hear that there are some people out there that appreciate what you do. What has been your craziest experience at a show? (Yours or another bands) Think it has to be Aardklop 2011 at Memphis Rock. It was the Friday night midnight slot and we were finishing up our set. Those last 3 songs were completely mental. It was a full house and the crowd was going so crazy that they were literally pushing each other onto the stage. Booze was flying everywhere and the stage monitors were rolling past our feet. Found a purse, a shoe and a chipped tooth on stage, it was half scary. The mosh pit got so crazy I almost thought I had to stop playing to save some girls getting trampled, but luckily that thought passed in a few seconds. It was a very fun set. Describe yourself in one word Experimentalicious

January Survivor: Getting back into the swing of things, slowly… T

he first few months of the year are always a tough time for most. Money is low, the holiday spirit is slowly being ripped from our clasps and our mundane work duties have begun… And let me not forget the extra few pounds that have found their way to my hips compliments of a holiday filled with festivities and luncheons with the family.

New Year’s resolutions and life plans have been put in place and even semi forgotten by now; and people are getting back into the swing of things, despite an empty wallet and lack of motivation just yet. One thing I dread about coming back to work, is the timely task of picking out things to wear that are job appropriate (Keeping in mind that I am still living on memories of the beach, sun and sandals) It has taken me the month of January (31 days, 744 hours, 44 640 minutes… I could go on) to come up with a few of my favourite items to help keep me stylish and summer fresh until my wallet decides to stop eating my extra income…. 1. Neon accents help to illuminate the skin and show off that beautiful bronze tan you picked up during the holidays. 2. Carnival and fantasy-like prints help keep you in holiday mode. 3. It’s all in the details. Accessories like hats, scarfs and turban head wraps will help transform a simple outfit choice into a head turning summer creation. Another great way to surviving the first few months of work is to master the art of DIY. Transforming your older wardrobe items into newer ones using glue, scissors and other items will help turn your attire from drab to fab, and DIY-ing is quick and easy to do. There are many sites and blogs that offer easy DIY tutorials; try I SPY DIY blog, she has some

H

enly Boxing Club also known as Habib’s Ultimate Fitness is owned and run by Grant Habib. This Community Boxing Club has been funded and run in Grant Habib’s personal capacity . It started as a Boxing Club out of his garage for underprivileged kids. The initial aim was bully proofing children, developing selfesteem and keeping the children active and off the streets. Last year April we registered with the Johannesburg Amateur Boxing Orginisation, Henley Boxing Club is the only competitive club allowed to compete in the whole of the Vaal Triangle and has been commissioned by Mr. Kit Makotter and endorsed by Brian Mitchell, Hall of fame boxer. We have graded 24 boys whom have done us proud and proved to us we have potential in our community as seen by the likes of IBO World Champion, Chris Van Heerden and former SA Champ, Daniel Billy the Kid Bruwer. We scrape by every month to cover costs such as rent, water, lights and necessities for the boxers and gym. Grant Habib started the Habib’s Ultimate Fitness Boxersizing for the Ladies and Gents of the Community at a flat rate of R250.00 per month to help cover the costs so that our boxers can have a home called Henley Boxing Club, which at the present moment is not covering expenses. He has also taken on the task of sacrificing 2 hours of his day on Friday morning to assist Pastor Danie Groenewaldt, from Eden Wholeness Youth Care Centre, where he assists in the rehabilitation of problem children, addicts, and destitute boys, which is also a project to uplift the

youth in our community. Grant Habib does a detox cardio fitness program to help the boys on the path to rehabilitation. We are urging the community, council and private or business sector to have it in your heart to assist with funding, in keeping these boys dreams and hopes as well as future development alive. Stay brave Bafana A

fcon 2013 started out slowly but I now feel it’s gaining impetus. You naturally get tight encounters in the opening games as teams don’t want to give too much away. Up until Wednesday evening, I would have said that Bafana Bafana were the biggest disappointment in the tournament thus far. Against Angola, however, they really showed what they are capable of. The side played with more freedom and a short passing game, which allowed them to retain possession. Most importantly they demonstrated the ability to pass forward. From day one I have called for the side to take risks, as I believe you will never win matches if you don’t. When a side adopts a more positive mentality they end up getting more players in the box and it’s funny how things often fall into place. Take for example when Siyabonga Sangweni made a run into the box and the ball fell kindly for him. If he hadn’t made the effort of getting into that position, he would never have scored. Dean Furman was outstanding against the Sable Antelopes but was ably supported by May Mahlangu in the first half and Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the second. The combination play allowed Bafana the outlet to employ their short passing game. I have always maintained that the strategy of two holding midfielders has never worked for South Africa, as they can’t get forward enough from the centre of midfield. Playing just one holding midfielder doesn’t mean the other players won’t get back and defend. The likes of Mahlangu and Letsholonyane weren’t afraid to track back. The Barcelona midfield is a prime example – they get in the faces of their opposition and aim for the interception. While Furman was the holding midfielder, even he was attack-minded and I feel that’s the way modern football has evolved. Taken from Neil Tovey

RODRIGUEZ COMING TO SOUTH AFRICA

C

ape Town - Big Concerts announced on Thursday that the legendary singer-songwriter Rodriguez will be heading to South Africa. Two performances have been scheduled and will take place on Friday 15 February at the Big Arena Carnival City in Johannesburg and Wednesday 20 February at the Grand Arena, Grand West in Cape Town. The Mexican-American singer-songwriter, known simply as Rodriguez, has been working on his music career in Detroit since the early 1960s. Folk hero It was also during this time that he launched his debut album Cold Fact. The album had been banned by the then apartheid government, but a bootleg recording of the album found its way into South Africa and became the official album for the young

liberal resistance. For the next two decades it was a nationwide phenomenon. Yet, back in Detroit, Rodriguez had no idea that his music had secured him as a household hero for many in South Africa. After rumours that Rodriguez had committed suicide, two South African fans set out on a journey to find out what really happened to their hero. This eventually led to the making of a documentary Searching For Sugar Man which achieved great success at this year’s Sundance Festival in Utah. The movie is still showing at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationwide. Tickets for the shows will go on public sale via all Computicket channels. Seating plans for Cape Town and Johannesburg are available on Computicket’s website as well as Big Concerts’ Facebook page. www.channel24.co.za

THE SHOWREEL MOVIE REVIEW The Watch 7/10 Four men who form a neighbourhood watch group as a way to get out of their day-to-day family routines find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion. With the cast of Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill, also the writing abilities of Seth Rogan, The Watch is an enjoyable comedy that will keep you laughing from start to end. The Watch is almost the modern day version of the Ghostbusters, but instead of ghosts, its aliens. The use of language and alien scenes are not for children, the age restriction 16 but for those who are looking for a good comedy to watch I suggest you rent this one.

The Dictator 7/10

The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. The Republic of Wadiya is ruled by an eccentric and oppressive leader named Hafez Aladeen. Aladeen is summoned to New York to a UN assembly to address concerns about his country’s nuclear weapons program, but the trip goes awry. Sacha Baron Cohen delivers a performance that only SBC can, he is crude, vulgar and insensitive but those are things we love about the actor/writer and that makes his characters push the boundaries. The Dictator makes fun of the world powers and how business dealings are the true reasons why governments do what they do. If you enjoyed Ali G and Borat I strongly suggest you rent this film.

Game Review - Far Cry 3

W

e’ve all thought about becoming something better, but on our own terms. That is not the case in Far Cry 3. You’re friends and family are either killed or kidnapped by pirates on the stunningly, majestic and beautiful Rook island and now you decide to stop them..... A exciting holiday takes psycological turn and you and your friends get kidnapped, you have no experience in fighting and after a miraculous escape, you quickly start learning the laws of this jungle. The trial of freeing those you care about takes a tumble and Vaas Montenegro(dum, dum dummm...) is pulling the strings, he’s voilent and unpredictable. Soon after making your escape you meet Dennis Rogers, who guides you through the physical and psycological path of becoming a Rakyat Warrior(with cool tattoos or “tatau” included). Helping them helps you on your quest to escape the island. Vaas’s Pirates are ruthless, they came to the island to pillage and steal and do what pirates do, they are not very smart and therefore easy to take down, also their paranoia (From all the narcotics) works in your favour as it is best to single them out because dealing with a hord of these guys will get you killed. Stealth is greatly on your side, this is where a bow and arrow comes in handy. The weapons available in the game range from your trusty machete to hand guns to flame throwers and many, many more..... You have a crafting option where you can create loot rucksacks, potions, pouches and even arrow quivers, however it’s not that easy to come by the ingredients, thinking back to the time I got ripped apart by a tiger. Jason turns into a very good hunter and gatherer. Sharks are also quite tough, but nothing beats punching a shark and beating it! You heal by gathering plant life on the island and even take a “trip” down mushroom cove! The game has a majestic world as full of beauty as it is of horror. Clear oceans, and thick plant life gives you the cover you need to sneak in and take down enemies especially as they have quite a bit of snipers. Side quests include the Rakyat trials and even actual pigeon shooting and all these unlock very nice toys for the everyday island assasin! By Corry Roets.
