Caring Friends Therapy Dogs
T
hose familiar with the term “therapy dog” know that these animals are specifically chosen to bring joy, companionship and healing to the underprivileged members of our society. These dogs usually visit frail care centres, mentally and physically disabled institutions and hospitals, to bring the calming and healing effects of dogs to these people. Science has proven that interaction with a pet is stress relieving, it reduces heart beat and blood pressure, has positive impact on depression and mood disturbances, and increases serotonin levels in the body. “Caring Friends Therapy Dogs” was established in March 2009 and is a registered NonProfit Organisation (and PBO) with primary focus on using dogs (or any other pets, for that matter), to further and improve people’s well-being and health.

Times 2: KLOP DIEP VIR JOU
he seventeen year old talented twins from Glen Marais, Zenobia and Saskia van der Spuy, released the debut CD titled, Klop diep vir jou, during 2013 in front of a sold out audience at the Barnyard Theatre, Boksburg, and now it is time to formally introduce them to the media and wider public. Their first single release, I’m in love with you, is currently being released to radio stations nationwide and the feedback is overwhelming. They realised during their Grade 7 year at Impala Primary that they wanted to make a living out of singing and there and then Zenobia (without any prior training) picked up a guitar and started playing. Saskia joined in and both of them starting writing the lyrics to all the melodies that Zenobia created. As students at the Hoërskool Kempton Park, they ended in the finals of their school’s “Veg Vir Vym” competitions during 2011 and 2012. Back then they were baptised by the school as Totally Talented Twins, but later when they decided to make a career out of it they chose to go with the name Times 2. They are currently studying at the College Campus of Performing Arts in Kensington where they are being educated in vocal ability, business management, culture, theory and marketing. One of the most exciting things for them so far was the evening of their CD launch at the Barnyard Theatre in Boksburg and to share the stage with well respected names in the industry such as Mauritz Lotz, Denny Lallouette and Bruce Wallace. Both of them admires Andrew Massey at COPA, Bruce Wallace and their mother (their “MoManager”) as their mentors. They sing about how they feel and how they see the world and live as teenagers. They have their own unique style and sound. They learnt not to wait for a dream to become a reality but to follow it, work hard at it and make it a reality. Spinning classes
W
hat is spinning? Spinning is an intense cardio workout on a stationary bike. In a spinning class all the bikes face the instructor who plays a variety of music designed to motivate you to pedal fast or slower, according to the beat, while talking you through visualisations of an outdoor cycling workout: he/she will describe various settings you are supposedly cycling through as you adjust your resistance and pedal accordingly. For example: “ Adjust your resistance to eight as we go up a hill, you’re almost at the top…” Health Benefits of doing Spinning: 1. It can maximize your body’s fat burning ability. 2. It can help you develop lean muscles. 3. It can improve your cardiovascular health. 4. It can improve your posture. 5. It can work out many different muscle groups. 6. It can boost your overall fitness level. Spinning tips Because spinning is such a vigorous activity, you should do a few things before, after and during your class to make the most of your workout: 1. Hydrate. Spinning makes you sweat. A lot. So hydrate with at least two glasses of water, at least an hour before you start a class. Bring a water bottle with you. And be sure to drink lots of water when you’re done. 2. Eat right. Your body will need lots of fuel to get through a spinning workout. Eat a balanced diet that includes protein, carbs, fruits and veggies. Don’t eat an hour before you work out, though, because spinning on a full stomach could make you nauseated. Instead, eat a well-balanced after-spin snack or meal 3. Go at your own pace. Because you can adjust the speed and intensity of the workout to your liking, you should never feel like you have to overextend yourself during a class. If you’re not comfortable at a certain pace, slow down. It’s not worth injuring yourself or getting discouraged. 4. Stretch. Stretching before and after a spinning workout will reduce your risk of injury and will loosen you up for next time. 5. Ask questions. If this is your first, second or even third time spinning, don’t be afraid to ask the spinning instructor questions. Instructors can help you figure out the best seated position for you on your bike, including how far your knees should extend during a cycle rotation and even how to adjust the handlebars for workout comfort. Instructors want you to have fun and have a great workout, so take advantage of their expertise. Class rules: When you arrive at a spinning class you’ll choose or be assigned to a bike. It’s a good idea to arrive a few minutes early so you can set yours up properly. If it’s your first class, let the instructor know so he or she can keep an eye on you.

Vaalpark Martial Arts projects The Vaalpark Martial Art & Fitness Academy under the renowned instructor, Shihan James Vermaak, announced that the academy has been very active and did the academy present various projects that were launched over December 2013 and January 2014. Two of the projects were launched in association with CIPLA NUTRITION organized by Henk Bronkhorst from CIPLA and Shihan James Vermaak owner of the academy. • On 10 December 2014 the EFC Fighter, Sean Robinson, hosted a fighting MMA seminar that were attended by 40 fighters in association with CIPLA Nutrition. The fighters were trained in basic stand-up fighting methods and basic ground and pound techniques. Sean also went toe to toe with some of the attending fighters to teach them whilst fighting with them on the floor. Sean is a great ambassador for EFC and the sport of MMA. • On 1 February 2014 again the academy in association with CIPLA Nutrition presented a 1000KJ’s burn-out working training session and the academy was blessed that thanks to the support from CIPLA the well known DJ – Mark Stent supplied the music and pumped the rhythm to the roof and ensured that the energy stayed constant and did he kept the people on the floor going at the training in a positive zone. The session were attended by 35 members of the academy. • Over the period 28 to 30 March 2014 the academy will host the South African Traditional Karate Council National All Style Karate Championship at the Emerald Resort & Casino. The 2014 National Championship will be hosted in association with MASA whom is the national governance for SASCOC. The SATKC is a member in of MASA. We expect around 600 competitors with around 1 200 spectators. The championship will also be attended by the 2014 National Protean Team that will represent South Africa at the 2104 World Martial Art Games to be hosted in Canada in 2014. • During October 2013 Shihan James Vermaak traveled to Thai-land where he trained under Thai instructors at the Tiger Muay Thai School in Thai Boxing. Shihan james were also fortunate to train with the well known UFC Coaches, Roger “ Al Matador” Huerta and Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole. CHANGING FACE IS BACK WITH A BRAND NEW ALBUM!

ocal rock group, Changing Face, were first introduced to the SA music industry when they released one of their biggest hits, Everything Changes. Not surprisingly, their second single, Forever & Ever Young followed suit and hit the charts - even making it onto a national radio commercial. 7 years down the line and Changing Face - more promising than ever – are taking off where they last left off by releasing their long anticipated self-titled third studio album. The beginning of Changing Face lies deep in the heart of the Vaal Triangle. Formally known as Lloyd, a one-man acoustic act, the need grew for more than a solo setup. Changing Face was formed and in 2006 they released their debut album, Blind Fold, followed by So Real in 2009. The group is made up of four individuals from different backgrounds, but all with one thing in common – they live and breathe music. The key to this band is a combination of confidence, hard work and talent. The group consists of Lloyd Peltier on lead vocals and guitar – born in SA, bred in the US and now back in SA; Sam Moka on drums - originally from Nigeria; Ugo Moka on percussion - Sam’s younger brother and newer member, Bruno dos Santos on bass guitar and vocals born and bred in Vanderbijlpark. As like the members of the group, this 13-track album is diverse and fresh that fans, old and new, will appreciate. Known for their polished and energetic songs, each song offers an original and different experience. Together the band creates a fantastic up-tempo rhythm fused with Lloyd’s smooth vocal work. The album opens with the ballad, Freedom Song and picks up with the well-arranged track, Giving In. Lyrics
of up-tempo tracks such as second single, Fire with Fire, Soul on Fire and Lullaby are accompanied by catchy guitar riffs. Facing Changes is a more solemn piece while rockier tracks like Letters from Heaven and It’s About You showcase the band’s masterful guitar work and harmonies. The album also contains other interesting tracks that are enjoyable to listen to such as Dusty Road and the album’s closing song, Loaded Gun (first single and music video). The album was produced and recorded by Wayne Joshua Hirschson at Dreamspace Recording Studios in Cape Town. All four members of Changing Face co-wrote on the album. “We rely heavily on our tight bond that we share as friends. We can write songs individually but we know how to tap into each other’s experiences and talents to craft a great song together,” says Lloyd. They have collaborated with the likes of Lindsay McGuire, Mark Beling, Johan Laas and UMOJA and have shared the stage with some of South Africa’s top musicians. The band takes their inspiration from the likes of Collective Soul, Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, David Gray, Foo Fighters, Prime Circle and the like. Changing Face always gives an unparalleled energetic performance. Changing Face regularly performs at various venues and events across South Africa and has even ventured abroad. usito Land, Joburg’s hottest family festival is back in 2014 with some of the finest South African musicians and bands taking to the stage as well some of the city’s tastiest Portuguese cuisine sizzling on the grills. The festival runs from 24 April to 4 May 2014 at Wemmer Pan at Pioneer Park in La Rochelle in the south of Johannesburg. “This year’s festival promises to be the best one we have ever put on and we
have gone all out to make sure that all our visitors have a great time that exceeds all expectations,” said Noemia Contente, spokesperson from the Lusito Association for the Physically and Mentally Challenged. Lusito Land first opened its doors in 1981 as a festival that celebrated the Portuguese tradition and culture. Over the last 34 years, it has evolved into a festival celebrated by the many cultures that make up Johannesburg and Gauteng. The Portuguese tradition has however been sustained in the wonderful traditional flavours of the fine cuisine that is an important facet in the Portuguese heritage. Lusito Land has proven to be a crowd-pleaser and was voted no fewer than 11 times as “Best Festival” by Leisure Options Magazine readers. 160,000 visitors annually walk through the gates and proving it to be the ideal family day out ahead of Gauteng’s winter months.
