Important notice for societies and organizations associated with the ICC from the Newspaper Committee Dear Friends, To better support the efforts of your society or organization in planning an event or an activity at the Italian Community Center for which you are seeking public support, we strongly suggest that you place your news stories in The Italian Times two months prior to the function date. This will ensure that your event or activity is published in both the online and the printed and delivered editions of the newspaper. As a general rule, your news stories should be submitted to editor Tom Hemman by email at themman@italiancc.org by the 5th day of the month. For the actual deadline for stories, please contact Tom via email or call him at 414/223-2180. The monthly issue of The Italian Times always carries a story regarding to the deadline for advertising, however, that due date is not the same as the deadline for news stories. When articles are presented, they must be typeset (done on a computer) and submitted electronically (i.e., via email). If this is not possible and your articles are handwritten, you will be asked to submit your stories significantly earlier – two weeks before the published deadline for advertising – in order to allot time for proofreading and preparation for layout in the newspaper. If you have any questions about the deadlines or submitting your articles, please contact Tom Hemman at the ICC. Thank you for your continued support of the Italian Community Center. – The ICC Newspaper Committee Rosemary DeRubertis, chair, Tony Piacentini, Tony Zingale, Susie Christiansen, Bobby Tanzilo, Ginny Balistreri, Anna Pitzo, Enrica Tarantino Woytal, Joanne Czubek and Faye Ann Kessler

The Theodore Mazza, Sam J. Balistreri, Tony and Sadie Machi, Italian Studies and Alfred A. Silverman Memorial awards were presentations of the Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National. All awards are administered through the UNICO organizations, except the Italian studies and the Silverman awards which are courtesy of the Albert A. Silverman Foundation. The high school award recipients were selected by a nonpartisan, non-Italian panel of dignitaries from the Milwaukee area. The Italian studies awardee was chosen by the teaching staff at UWM. The Civic Music Association of Milwaukee selected the Silverman awardee. Since its inception in 1936, the Milwaukee UNICO scholarship program has steadily expanded. The first year one $250 scholarship was presented. Since then, more than $1.1 million has been awarded to 581 student recipients. The Milwaukee Ladies of UNICO also presented $500 to the Italian Immersion Program at Milwaukee’s Victory School for the Gifted and Talented. Last year, the Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National did the same.

Italy’s ‘Festa della Repubblica’ is June 2 The Festa della Repubblica is celebrated in Italy each year on June 2. It commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when the Italian population was called upon to decide what form of government – monarchy or republic – to give to the country after World War II and the fall of Fascism. After 85 years of monarchy, with 12,717,923 votes for and 10,719,284 votes against, Italy became a republic, and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled. It became illegal for any male member of

the family to set foot on Italian soil. Monarchists argued that the vote was miscounted. These allegations were never proven. This is one of the most important Italian public holidays which, like July 4 in the United States, celebrates the birth of the modern nation. A grand military parade is held in central Rome. Many cities mark the holiday with parades and fireworks. Many businesses and venues, even major attractions, are closed in observance of this day.
