Digital Art (p.3) tells the story of the form and Photography Reframed (p.13) presents a new road map for contemporary photography. In ‘The Library of Gender & Popular Culture’, Beyoncé (p.39) unravels the image of a cultural icon; Tweenhood (p.40) investigates young girls’ popular culture; Shaping Gym Cultures (p.40) analyses fitness culture, and Bad Girls, Dirty Bodies (p.40) looks at ‘safe’ femininity. FASCIST MODERNISM

The Arts under Dictatorship NEW Francesca Billiani University of Manchester

A unique and visionary generation of young Chinese artists are coming to prominence in the art world – just as China cements its place as the second largest art market on the planet. Building on the new frontiers opened up by the Chinese artists of the late 1980s and 1990s, artists such as Ai Wei Wei who came to the West and became household names, this new generation are provocative, exciting and bold. But what does it mean to be a Chinese artist today? And how can we better understand their work? Here, renowned critic Barbara Pollack presents the first book to tell the story of how these Chinese millennials, fast becoming global art superstars, negotiate their cultural heritage, and what this means for China’s impact on the future of global culture. 192 PAGES 216X135MM JUNE 2018 9781788313131 PAPERBACK £16.99/ $25

Between 1917 to 1975 Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Soviet Union, and Spain were ruled by authoritarian or totalitarian dictatorships. In order to bring about sweeping changes to the political system and to reinforce traditional values, these regimes uniformly adopted what we would call a modernist aesthetic. Focusing largely on Benito Mussolini’s Italy, and his ‘New Rome’ project, Francesca Billiani argues that the new concept of ‘modernity’ in design was intertwined irrecoverably with fascism. 320 PAGES 216 X 134MM SEPTEMBER 2018 9781784535230 HARDBACK £75 / $110 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF TWENTIETH CENTURY HISTORY e ebook available

THE PARTICIPATOR IN CONTEMPORARY ART

NEW

Art and Social Relationships Kaija Kaitavuori Aalto University, Helsinki

The early twenty-first century has seen contemporary art make continued use of audience participation, in which the spectator becomes part of the artwork itself. In this book, Kaija Kaitavuori claims that the ‘participator’ is a new artistic role that does not fall under the auspices of artist or spectator and in proving such she devises a four-group typology of involvement. This highly original book offers students and teachers the tools with which to improve their understanding of participatory art and removes the confusing terminology that has characterised so many other discussions. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 2018 9781784538750 HARDBACK £69 / $95 e ebook available

AIDS AND REPRESENTATION

Portraits and Self Portraits During the AIDS Crisis in America NEW Fiona Johnstone Birkbeck, University of London How might artists choose to represent themselves before their own death? What visual language can possibly convey the experience of living with a stigmatic and life-threatening condition that was misunderstood and a source of hysterical fear and revulsion? How might an artist respond to the loss of a loved one under such circumstances, and how can art transform private grief into an act of political engagement? In this book, Fiona Johnstone argues that the epidemic necessitated a radical new approach to conceptualising and visualising the human body. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2018 9781788311885 HARDBACK £69 / $95 INT. Art World Dissidents and Their Alternative Identities Nicola McCartney Central St. Martin’s College

There exists a series of contemporary artists who continually defy the traditional role of the artist/author, including Art & Language, Guerrilla Girls, Bob and Roberta Smith, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd and Lucky PDF. In Death of the Artist, Nicola McCartney explores their work and uses previously unpublished interviews to provoke a vital and nuanced discussion about contemporary artistic authorship. How do emerging artists navigate intellectual property or work collectively and share the recognition? How might a pseudonym aid ‘artivism’? Most strikingly, she demonstrates how an alternative identity can challenge the art market and is symptomatic of greater cultural and political rebellion.

What is the story of digital art? Tracing the medium from its roots in constructivist and futurist fantasies to today’s complex virtual realities, Nicholas Lambert has written the first rigorous art historical account of digital art’s evolution since 1945. Unlike so many artistic dwevelopments, digital art has never belonged to a single and canonical movement; its genesis reflects a multiplicity of philosophical viewpoints and technological discoveries. The book chronicles the major artists, exhibitions and institutions key to the medium’s story. 336 PAGES 234 X 156MM OCTOBER 2018 9781848858589 HARDBACK £69 / $110 9781848858596 PAPERBACK £18.99 / $32 e ebook available

THE ORIGINS OF VISUAL CULTURE IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD NEW

Aesthetics, Art and Architecture in Early Islam Mohammed Hamdouni Alami University of California, Berkeley

The depiction of historical humanitarian disasters in art exhibitions, news reports, monuments and heritage landscapes has framed the harrowing images we currently associate with dispossession. People across the world are driven out of their homes and countries on a wave of conflict, poverty and famine, and our main sites for engaging with their loss are visual news and social media. In a reappraisal of the viewer’s role in representations of displacement, Niamh Ann Kelly examines a range of commemorative visual culture from the Great Irish Famine. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2018 9781784537104 HARDBACK £69 / $95 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF VISUAL CULTURE e ebook available

WOMEN ARTISTS, FEMINISM AND THE MOVING IMAGE NEW

Contexts and Practices Lucy Reynolds (Ed) University of Westminster

In tenth-century Iraq, a group of Arab intellectuals and scholars known as the Ikhwan al-Safa began to make their intellectual mark on the society around them. It was a mysterious organisation, but its contribution to the philosophy, art and culture of the era is evident. In the visual arts, for example, Hamdouni Alami argues that the theory of human proportions which the Ikwan al-Safa propounded (something very similar to those of da Vinci), helped shape the evolution of the philosophy of aesthetics, art and architecture in the tenth and eleventh centuries CE, in particular in Egypt under the Fatimid rulers. 200 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 2018 9781788310963 PAPERBACK £20 / $29.50 e ebook available

An Art History Matt Lodder University of Essex Despite its rich visual culture and aesthetic traditions, there has never before been an art history of the tattoo. Beginning by explaining the origins of the art form – with Captain Cook ‘discovering’ the tattooing practices of Polynesians - Tattoo: An Art History then traces the history of tattooing as a professional artistic practice in Britain from 1870, when the first professional tattoo studio opened, to the present day. In this enthralling book, body art and modification expert Matt Lodder establishes a chronological survey of an oftmisunderstood and much mythologised mode of art. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM NOVEMBER 2018 9781780762364 HARDBACK £72 / $99 INT. Art and Critical Theory NEW

The Legacy of Feminist Artists in Emerging Practices Kathy Battista

William Blake (1757-1827) is considered one of the most singular and brilliant talents that England has ever produced. Celebrated now for the originality of his thinking, painting and verse, he shocked contemporaries by rejecting all forms of organised worship even while adhering to the truth of the Bible. But how did he come to equate Christianity with art? And why did he conceive of Christ himself as an artist: in fact, as the artist, par excellence? 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 2018 9781784539832 HARDBACK £69 / $95 LIBRARY OF MODERN RELIGION e ebook available

STREET ART IN THE MIDDLE EAST NEW

New York is a centre of creative production for an exciting, emerging generation of women artists. Their work investigates themes such as the body as medium and subject matter; the deconstruction of the existing patriarchal order of the art world; the appropriation of earlier art historical references; and the use of so-called abject and everyday materials. New York, New Wave investigates the relevance of earlier feminist practice for this ‘new’ generation, asking: Does gender difference still play a role in today’s practice? How can younger women artists embrace a radical political ideology and yet remain market friendly? How far have these artists diverged from the established feminist ‘tradition’? 192 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2018 9781848858947 HARDBACK £69 / $95 9781848858954 PAPERBACK £16.99 / $28 e ebook available

DRAWING IN In recent years, ‘thinking through drawing’ has become a ubiquitous trope – not only in the arts, but in the sciences and humanities too. This affords an exciting opportunity for sustained intellectual dialogues to emerge within, between and without traditional disciplinary boundaries. Drawing In provides a space where new perspectives and critical approaches in drawing can be brought together and explored. This innovative series includes books for general readers, scholarly monographs and edited anthologies – which emerge from the diverse fields of art and design history and theory, fine art, design, drawing pedagogy, technology, geography, science, engineering and even medicine. Some are practice-led and driven by creative textual strategies that move beyond the page; all contribute original perspectives on how drawing facilitates and manifests the production, acquisition and understanding of knowledge.

NEW

New Practices since the 1960s Maryclare Foá, Jane Grisewood, Birgitta Hosea & Carali McCall

Drawing has been growing in recognition and stature within contemporary fine art since the mid-1970s. Simultaneously, feminist activism has been widespread, leading to the increased prominence of women artists, scholars, critics and curators. Drawing Difference argues that these developments did not occur in parallel simply by coincidence. Rather, the intimate interplay between drawing and feminism is best characterised as allotropic – a term originating in chemistry that describes a single pure element which nevertheless assumes varied physical structures, denoting the fundamental affinities which underlie apparently differing material forms. 320 PAGES 234 X 156MM DECEMBER 2018 9781788313841 HARDBACK £72 / $99 e ebook available

Art and Critical Theory Are you baffled by Baudrillard? Dazed by Deleuze? Confused by Kristeva? Other guides can feel as impenetrable as the original texts to those who ‘think in images’. Contemporary Thinkers Reframed instead uses the language of the arts to explore the usefulness in practice of complex ideas. Short, contemporary and accessible, these lively books utilise actual examples of artworks, films, television shows, works of architecture, fashion and even computer games to explain and explore the work of the most commonly taught thinkers. Conceived specifically for the visually minded, the series will prove invaluable to students right across the visual arts.

MERLEAU-PONTY REFRAMED

NEW

A Guide for the Arts Student Andrew Fisher Goldsmiths University, London

Merleau-Ponty wrote that philosophy was “a way of relearning to look at the world.” Since the 1950s, artists, art historians and philosophers have been continually influenced by his work. But how to make sense of Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and his belief that perception should be questioned above all else? This accessible guide explores both his thought and its impact on visual art. Examining work by artists including Paul Cézanne,Vito Acconci, Katy la Rocca and Dan Graham, it presents Merleau-Ponty’s engagement with the body, interpersonal relations, the senses and the environment through concrete examples. Exploring the wide-ranging and interdisciplinary nature of Merleau-Ponty’s work, this book unpacks his legacy and continued relevance, encouraging the reader to look with fresh eyes at art and its place in the world. 174 X 124MM JUNE 2019 9781848857995 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $14.99 CONTEMPORARY THINKERS REFRAMED e ebook available

Art and Critical Theory NEW ENCOUNTERS: ARTS, CULTURES, CONCEPTS Series Editor: Griselda Pollock Professor of Social and Critical Histories of Art and Director of the Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and History, University of Leeds. After theory: do we abandon ‘the theoretical turn’, or do we work with it differently? The New Encounters series brings together major international commentators and also introduces a new generation of thinkers. Resisting both the rejection of theory and the current displacement of art history in favour of visual culture, New Encounters instead rejuvenates both approaches. Marked out by their critical engagement with and close informed readings of images, texts and cultural events, these books employ fresh feminist, postcolonial and queer perspectives. New Encounters also showcases exciting new volumes which revisit key figures in twentieth century art through highly original feminist approaches.

CROSSMAPPINGS

NEW

On Visual Culture Elisabeth Bronfen University of Zurich and New York University Foreword by Griselda Pollock

The great, influential cultural critic, Elisabeth Bronfen, sets out in this book a conversation between literature, cinema and visual culture. The crossmappings facilitated in and between these essays address the cultural survival of image formulas involving portraiture and the uncanny relation between the body and its visual representability, the gendering of war, death and the fragility of life, as well as sovereignty and political power. Each chapter tracks transformations that occur as aesthetic figurations travel from one historical moment to another, but also from one medium to another. Many prominent artists are discussed during these journeys into the cultural imaginary, include Degas, Francesca Woodman, Cindy Sherman, Paul McCarthy, Eva Hesse, Louise Bourgeois, Wagner, Picasso, and Shakespeare, as well as classic Hollywood’s film noir and melodrama and the TV series, The Wire and House of Cards. 384 PAGES 234 X 156MM FEBRUARY 2018 9781788311076 HARDBACK £72 / $99 NEW ENCOUNTERS: ARTS, CULTURES, CONCEPTS e ebook available

Art and Critical Theory Art and… is a series of intelligently written and highly readable illustrated books for the gallery-goer and student. The series takes as its starting points both that art matters – that it has a real and important connection to the world in which we live – and that contemporary art, sometimes difficult or unapproachable, need not equate to difficult writing. In selecting themes, we have aligned art with those perennial issues such as sex and war which trouble generation after generation, as well as those specifically contemporary issues – recent scientific advances and advertising for example – to show how art both reflects and influences the wider world.

REBUILDING BABEL NEW

Modern Architecture and Internationalism Mark Crinson

Much of modernist architecture was inspired by the emergence of internationalism: the ethics and politics of world peace, justice and unity through global collaboration. Mark Crinson here shows how the ideals represented by the Tower of Babel – built, so the story goes, by people united by one language – were effectively adapted by internationalist architecture, its styles and practices, in the modern period. Focusing particularly on the points of convergence between modernist and internationalist trends in the 1920s, and again in the immediate post-war years, he underlines how such architecture utilised the themes of a cooperative community of builders and a common language of forms. 288 PAGES 246 X 189MM MAY 2017 9781784537128 HARDBACK £20 / $35

IMAGES OF SEX WORK IN EARLY TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICA NEW

Gender, Sexuality and Race in the Storyville Portraits Mollie Le Veque University of East Anglia Storyville was New Orleans’ infamous red light district from 1897 to 1917. Its inhabitants, principally sex workers, were captured on film by one of the city’s photographers, E.J. Bellocq. Images of Sex Work questions the long-held assumptions about Bellocq and his models and argues that sex work was an everyday aspect of life in the modern city. 272 PAGES 216 X 138MM SEPTEMBER 2018 9781788311786 HARDBACK £69 / $95 e ebook available

Photography in a Global Age Gerd Hurm, Anke Reitz and Shamoon Zamir (Eds) The Family of Man is the most widely seen exhibition in the history of photography. The book of the exhibition, still in print, is also the most commercially successful photobook ever published. First shown at MoMA in New York in 1955, the exhibition travelled throughout the world, and was seen by over nine million people. This book revises the critical debate about The Family of Man, challenging in particular the legacy of Roland Barthes’s influential account of the exhibition.

FASHION CRIMES

At the beginning of the Victorian period, most of England’s population lived in the countryside; by its end, the balance had tipped towards living in urban and suburban spaces. In the context of this rapidly changing world, Rachel Worth explores the ways in which the clothing of the rural working classes was represented visually in paintings and photographs and by the literary sources of documentary, autobiography and fiction, as well as by the particular pattern of survival and collection by museums of garments of rural provenance. 256 PAGES 234 X 156MM JANUARY 2018 9781784533960 HARDBACK £72 / $99 e ebook available

Consumption, Politics and Islamic Identities Nazli Alimen Helsinki University This book investigates three of the most widespread faithinspired communities in Turkey: the Gülenists, Süleymanli and the Menzil. Nazli Alimen compares these communities, looking at their diverse interpretations of Islamic rules related to the body and dress, and how these different groups compete for power and control in Turkey. Based on ethnographic research and in-depth individual interviews, Alimen analyses the relationship between the marketplace and religion and shows how different communities interact with each other.

Film Thinks is an original new book series that asks: how has film influenced the way we think? The books in this series will be concise, engaging editions written by experts in film history and theory, each focusing on a past or present philosopher/ thinker whose intellectual landscape has been shaped by cinema. Whilst explaining and interpreting these thinkers’ ideas and the films at their origin, the series will celebrate cinema’s capacity to inspire and entertain – and ultimately to change the world. Aimed at film fans as well as specialists, Film Thinks is devoted to knowledge about cinema and philosophy as much as to the pleasure of watching films.

NOËL CARROLL ON FILM NEW

A Philosophy of Art and Popular Culture Mario Slugan

University of Warwick

‘Film is made for philosophy.’ So states Stanley Cavell, proposing the screen as the perfect venue for something more than pure entertainment. Catherine Wheatley’s book, as part of the compelling Film Thinks series, examines the Cavellian volumes explicitly focused on film, and identifies how the influence of cinema refined his wider philosophical concerns. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2018 9781788310253 HARDBACK £69 / $95 e ebook available

Noël Carroll is one of the most prolific, widely-cited and distinguished philosophers of art, but how, specifically, has cinema impacted his thought? This book argues that Carroll’s background in both cinema and philosophy has been crucial to his overall theory of aesthetics. Often a controversial figure within film studies, as someone who has assertively contested the psychoanalytic, semiotic and Marxist cornerstones of the field, his allegiance to alternative philosophical traditions has similarly polarised his readership. Mario Slugan proposes that Carroll’s defence of the notions of truth and objectivity provides a welcome antidote to ‘anything goes’ attitudes and postmodern scepticism towards art and popular culture, including film. 208 PAGES 216 X 134MM JUNE 2018 9781788312295 HARDBACK £69 / $95 e ebook available

GODARD AND SOUND NEW

Acoustic Innovation in the Late Films of Jean-Luc Godard Albertine Fox University of Bristol

French cinema is, as Ginette Vincendeau argues and demonstrates in this book, a popular art, combining audience appeal with art house and film festival attraction. While there have been books aplenty on either French cinema’s history, hitherto little has been published to stand alongside this book. 296 PAGES 228 X 152MM OCTOBER 2019 9781850438106 HARDBACK £69 / $110 9781850438113 PAPERBACK £15.99 / $28 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE e ebook available

What happens when we listen to a film? How can we describe the relationship of sound to vision in cinema, and in turn our relationship as spectators with the audio-visual? JeanLuc Godard understood the importance of the soundtrack in cinema and relied heavily on the impact of carefully constructed sound to produce innovative effects. For the first time, this book brings together his post-1979 multimedia works, and an analysis of their rich soundscapes. The book provides detailed critical discussions of feature-length films, shorts and videos, delving into Godard’s inventive experiments with the cinematic soundtrack and offering new insights into his latest 3D films. By detailing the production contexts and philosophy behind Godard’s idiosyncratic sound design, it provides an accessible route to understanding his complex use of music, speech and environmental sound. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2017 9781784538422 HARDBACK £69 / $94 e ebook available

Film Cultures and Histories Dorota Ostrowska, Francesco Pitassio and Zsuzsanna Varga (Eds)

The continued interest in the social and cultural life of the former Warsaw pact countries encompasses a desire to know more about their national cinemas. Yet, despite the increasing consumption of films from these countries, there is a lack of comprehensive information on this key aspect of visual culture. This important book rectifies the glaring gap and provides both a history and a contemporary account of East Central European cinema in the pre-WW2, socialist, and post-socialist periods.

The Global Vision of a Turkish Filmmaker Bülent Diken, Graeme Gilloch (both at Lancaster University) Craig Hammond Liverpool John Moores University Film maker Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s visually stunning contributions to the ‘New Turkish Cinema’ have marked him out as a pioneer of his medium. In an age where Turkey’s modernisation has created societal tensions and departures from past tradition, Ceylan’s films present a cinema of dislocation and a vision of ‘nostalgia’ understood as homesickness. This book offers an overdue study of Ceylan’s work and a critical examination of the principle themes therein. 240 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2017 9781784538163 HARDBACK £69 / $95 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE e ebook available

The Wizard of Oz brought many nowiconic tropes into popular culture: the yellow brick road, ruby slippers and Oz. But this book begins with Dorothy and her legacy as an archetypal touchstone in cinema for the child journeying far from home. In this book, distinguished film scholar Stephanie Hemelryk Donald offers a fresh interpretation of the migrant child as a recurring figure in world cinema. 272 PAGES 234 X 156MM JANUARY 2018 9781784534233 HARDBACK £72 / $99 TAURIS WORLD CINEMA SERIES e ebook available

ICS (Instituto de Ciências Sociais), University of Lisbon Portuguese cinema has become increasingly prominent on the international film festival circuit. From the prestige of directors Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa and Miguel Gomes, to box-office hit La Cage Dorée, aspects of Portuguese national cinema are widely visible although the output is comparatively small compared to other European players. This strange discrepancy prompts the question: how can Portuguese cinema be characterised and thought about in a global context? Accumulating expertise from an international group of scholars, this book investigates the shifting significance of the nation, Europe and the globe for the way in which Portuguese film is managed on the international stage. 288 PAGES 234 X 156MM JULY 2017 9781784531980 HARDBACK £75 / $110 TAURIS WORLD CINEMA SERIES e ebook available

This book offers innovative scholarship and in-depth analysis of Jia’s unique body of work. Drawing on classic and contemporary realism theory, it suggests that his particular expression of the realist mode is greatly shaped by the aesthetics of other Chinese artistic traditions.

A MODERN HISTORY OF FILMMAKING Series Editor: Jon Lewis

The Behind the Silver Screen series of ten volumes together cover for the first time the collaborative art, craft, business and history of filmmaking from inception to reality. Illustrated in black-and-white and colour, they also comprise the first full history of filmmaking. Following the first two books in the series on Cinematography and Screenwriting will be volumes devoted to directing, acting, producers, sound, animation, costume, art direction, editing and special effects.

DIRECTING

NEW

Behind the Silver Screen: A Modern History of Filmmaking

Lucy Fischer (Ed)

Of all the artisans who work in the American film industry, directors have been given the lion’s share of attention. Yet few books in this literature address the ways directors have worked with others and have negotiated the constraints and opportunities posed by a complex production process and a sprawling commercial industry. Directing fills this gap. It provides the historical context necessary to understand the key role of directors in the Hollywood system. It covers iconic directors like Cecil B. DeMille, Francis Ford Coppola and Terrence Malik. It also shows how a selection of remarkable filmmakers confronted issues encountered during a given period; for example, how Ida Lupino negotiated 1950s ingrained sexism and how black directors like Charles Burnett operated in the system. It follows the working strategies of independents like Steven Soderbergh or Tim Burton and of directors dealing in twenty-first century digital cinema. Both readable and detailed, the book has appeal across the study of film and film production to the broader interest in the director’s art. 216 PAGES 228 X 152MM OCTOBER 2017 9781788310376 HARDBACK £72 9781788310383 PAPERBACK £14.99

NEW

The Untold Story of Vivien Leigh Alan Strachan

As Scarlett O’Hara and Blanche Du Bois, Vivien Leigh took on some of the most pivotal roles in cinema history. Yet she was also a talented theatre actress with West End and Broadway plaudits to her name. In this ground-breaking new biography, Alan Strachan provides a completely new full-life portrait of Leigh, covering both her professional and personal life. Using previously-unseen sources from her archive, recently acquired by the V&A, he sheds new light on her fractious relationship with Laurence Olivier, based on their letters and diaries, as well as on the bipolar disorder which so affected her later life and work. Revealing new aspects of her early life as well as providing glimpses behind-the-scenes of the filming of Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire, this book provides the essential and comprehensive life-story of one of the twentieth century’s greatest actresses. 336 PAGES 226 X 155MM AUGUST 2018 9781788312080 HARDBACK £25 / $35 e ebook available

THE ORIGINS OF THE FILM STAR SYSTEM NEW

Persona, Publicity and Economics in Early Cinema Andrew Shail Newcastle University

Film stars are central to today’s celebrity-obsessed culture. Yet, in the early decades of cinema, the industry faced disincentives to using the identities of performers for publicity. For over 12 years after the invention of the projector, the major production centres of the world made fiction films without the use of constructed star personas. Assembling evidence from a multitude of unused and little-used archives, Shail reveals how film companies created ‘stars’ and how this major aspect of show business actually originated in France. 336 PAGES 216 X 134MM JULY 2018 9781788312073 HARDBACK £75 / $110 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE

PERFORMING FEMININITY

Woman as Performer in Early Russian Cinema Rachel Morley

This book examines the non-fictional representations of Soviet borderlands from the Far North to the Northern Caucasus and Central Asia between 1925-1940. Beginning with Dziga Vertov and his vision of the Soviet space as a unified, multinational mosaic, Oksana Sarkisova rediscovers films by filmmakers who helped construct an image of Soviet ethnic diversity and left behind a lasting visual legacy. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784535735 HARDBACK £72 / $99 KINO - THE RUSSIAN AND SOVIET CINEMA SERIES e ebook available

University College London Oriental dancers, ballerinas, actresses and opera singers - the figure of the female performer is ubiquitous in the cinema of pre-Revolutionary Russia. From the first feature film, Romashkov’s Stenka Razin (1908), through the sophisticated melodramas of the 1910s, to Viskovsky’s The Last Tango (1918), made shortly before the pre-Revolutionary film industry was dismantled by the new Soviet government, the female performer remains central. In this groundbreaking new study, Rachel Morley argues that early Russian film-makers used the character of the female performer to explore key contemporary concerns from changing conceptions of femininity and the emergence of the so-called New Woman, to broader questions concerning gender identity. 272 PAGES 216 X 134MM NOVEMBER 2016 9781784531591 HARDBACK £77 / $110 KINO - THE RUSSIAN AND SOVIET CINEMA SERIES e ebook available

FILM AND IDENTITY IN KAZAKHSTAN

Soviet and Post-Soviet Culture in Central Asia Rico Isaacs Oxford Brookes University In this book, Rico Isaacs uses cinema as an analytical lens to explore how the Kazakh national identity has been constructed and contested. Drawing on an analysis of Kazakh films from the last century, and featuring new interviews with directors and critics involved in the Central Asian film industry, his book traces the construction of nationalism within Kazakh cinema from the country’s inception as a Soviet Republic to a modern independent nation. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2017 9781784538385 HARDBACK £72 / $99 e ebook available

What has brought about the transformation of the British film industry over the last few decades, to the beginnings of what is arguably a new golden era? In recent years, as British films have won Oscars, Cannes Palms and Venice Golden Lions, releases such as Love Actually, Billy Elliot, Skyfall, Paddington and the Harry Potter series have found enormous commercial as well as critical success. The UK industry has encouraged, and benefitted from, a huge amount of inward investment, much of it from the Hollywood studios, but also from the National Lottery via the UK Film Council and BFI. Through vivid accounts based on first-hand interviews of what was happening behind the scenes, film commentator and critic Geoffrey Macnab provides in-depth analysis of how and why the British film industry has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. 320 PAGES 216 X 135MM APRIL 2018 9781788310055 HARDBACK £14.99 / $25 e ebook available

FILM CRITICISM AND DIGITAL CULTURES Journalism, Social Media and the Democratization of Opinion

Andrew McWhirter, Glasgow This timely collection brings together leading scholars who draw on a variety of critical approaches including adaptation, performance, cultural studies, queer theory, feminism and philosophy to examine screen representations of controversial sexualities from the weird and wonderful to the debased and debauched. In order to move past binary distinctions of good and bad, normal and abnormal, moral and immoral, Tainted Love seeks to critically interrogate perverse sexualities and sexual perversion on screen. 304 PAGES 234 X 156MM AUGUST 2017 9781780761954 HARDBACK £75 / $110 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE e ebook available

The World of TV Cyborgs Bronwen Calvert

The Open University in the North of England

The cyborg – an organic body augmented with technology – is an enduring figure that can be found across science fiction stories, novels, films, and, more recently, television. What can its marked presence in cult TV shows tell us about the rapidly changing world we live in, and indeed about the human condition? This book explores how the image of the cyborg attracts our fears and fascinations. These bionic creations encourage us, as viewers, to think about our interactions with technology in an age of immediacy and surveillance, reassess our own corporeal experiences, and re-imagine gender binaries and racial differences. This book uses the televisual medium as a tool to understand a range of cybernetic characters. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2017 9781784536480 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $22.50 e ebook available

Cult television is a pioneering platform for empowered female characters. From the dynamic female protagonists of The Avengers, Bewitched and Sapphire & Steel to the robust titular heroines of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Xena Warrior Princess, women in cult TV solve mysteries, save worlds from destruction and wield super powers. The book provides the first genealogy of action heroines in cult series from 1960 to today. The phrase ‘cultural phenomenon’ is sometimes over-used, but its relevance to the TV series Sherlock is undeniable. Few shows have been the subject of discussion between the UK’s Prime Minister and Chinese fans; few have found such a devoted fanbase almost overnight; and few have attracted hordes of viewers to watch their location filming. This is the first book to explore the hit series in relation to adaptation studies, TV aesthetics and stardom. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM AUGUST 2019 9781784533540 PAPERBACK £14.99 / $25 e ebook available

Danish television drama has never been as successful as in recent years. Drawing worldwide acclaim from critics and audiences alike, programmes like The Killing and The Bridge demonstrate widespread fascination with Danish style, aesthetics and culture as seen through television narratives. This book uses familiar, alongside lesser known, case studies of drama series to demonstrate how the particular features of Danish production have enhanced contemporary Danish drama’s appeal both at home and abroad. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM JANUARY 2017 9781784533564 HARDBACK £75 / $110 e ebook available

THE TV DETECTIVE

James Quinn (Ed)

Ethical Dilemmas in Factual Filmmaking British television changed radically in the new millennium. The influence of American ‘quality’ drama series such as The Sopranos, 24, Six Feet Under, and Mad Men – characterised by high production values, a glossy visual style and fast-paced elliptical editing – prompted a fresh generation in programming across the pond. This book analyses these changes in British television drama production and style since 2000, placing their development in cultural, historical and economic contexts.

TIME ON TV

Narrative Time, Time Travel and Time Travellers in Popular Television Culture

Lorna Jowett, Kevin Lee Robinson and David Simmons (Eds)

In this book, Patricia Pender argues that Buffy includes diverse elements of feminism and reconfigures – and sometimes revises – the ideals of American second wave feminism for a wide third wave audience. She also explores the ways in which the final season’s vision of collective feminist activism negotiates racial and class boundaries. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM APRIL 2016 9781780767451 HARDBACK £69 / $95 9781780767468 PAPERBACK £16.99 / $28 INVESTIGATING CULT TV SERIES e ebook available

Time and television have a unique and multi-faceted relationship. Focusing on the cult genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror, the book draws examples from among the most beloved television programmes of recent decades including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek:The Next Generation and Dr.Who to explore the diverse uses and representations of time. Using academic approaches from cultural studies, literary analysis, psychoanalytic theory and philosophy, this book lends a deeper understanding of television as a contemporary narrative medium. 192 PAGES 216 X 134MM MARCH 2016 9781784530136 HARDBACK £69 / $95 INVESTIGATING CULT TV SERIES e ebook available

The Myths and Stories of Doctor Who Ivan Philips

NEW

Adventures in Time and Space with Peter Capaldi Andrew O’Day (Ed)

“We’re all stories in the end”, said the Doctor in ‘The Big Bang’. Stories are, fundamentally, what Doctor Who is all about. Ivan Phillips presents a lively and richly varied analysis of the accumulated tales that constitute this popular modern mythology. Concerned equally with ‘classic’ and ‘new Who’, Phillips traces the expansion of the Time Lord’s story from the television into ever more intricate patterns of transmedia production. He discusses Doctor Who as a mythology that has drawn on its own past in often complex ways, at the same time reworking elements from many other sources, whether literary, cinematic, televisual or historical. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM MAY 2018 9781784532673 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $18.99 e ebook available

NEW DIMENSIONS OF DOCTOR WHO Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who – unpredictable, embattled, mercurial - has raised many fresh issues for followers of the Timelord. In this book, international experts evaluate the effect of Capaldi’s older age on the series’ pace and themes; his Scottishness - and the roles of the Doctor’s female companions. 288 PAGE 216 X 134MM OCTOBER 2018 9781788313636 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $17.95 e ebook available

It examines both the successful revival of the series since 2005 and its spinoff series, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Lorna Jowett delves into the distinctive stories and characters, including the Doctors themselves, their female and male companions, Captain Jack Harkness, Missy, Sarah Jane and her young comrades. 240 PAGE216X135MM MARCH 2017 9781784533748 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $28 e ebook available

MARVEL’S MUTANTS

NEW

The X-Men Comics of Chris Claremont Miles Booy

Today’s media, cinema and TV screens are host to new manifestations of myth, their modes of storytelling radically transformed from those of ancient Greece. They present us with narratives of contemporary customs and belief systems: our modernday myths. This book argues that the tools of transmedia merchandising and promotional material shape viewers’ experiences of the hit television series Star Trek, to reinforce the mythology of the gargantuan franchise. 288 PAGES 216 X 134MM FEBRUARY 2018 9781788310086 HARDBACK £69 / $95 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF THE MOVING IMAGE

In 1975, Marvel Comics revived the X-Men, a failed title which hadn’t used new material for half a decade. It was a marginal project in an industry then in crisis. Five years later, it was the bestseller in a revived comics market. Unusually in the comics world, one man, Chris Claremont wrote the comic over seventeen years, from 1975 to 1991, developing new characters such as Wolverine and Storm, and taking themes from Freudian psychology, Christian temptation narratives, Existentialist philosophy and the language of sub-cultural identity. Marvel’s Mutants is the first book to be devoted to the aesthetics of these comics that laid the foundation for the worldwide X-Men franchise we know today. Miles Booy explores Claremont’s recurrent themes, the evolution of his reputation as an auteur within a collaborative medium, the superhero genre and the input of the artists with whom Claremont worked. 256 PAGES 216X135MM MARCH 2018 9781788311526 PAPERBACK £12.99 / $18.99 e ebook available

University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) Video games are a defining part of mass visual culture. Today over half of all American households own a dedicated game console and gaming industry profits trump those of the film industry worldwide. In this book, Soraya Murray moves past the technical discussions of games and offers a fresh and incisive look at their cultural dimensions. She critically explores blockbusters like The Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, Spec Ops:The Line, Tomb Raider and Assassin’s Creed to show how they are deeply entangled with American ideological positions and contemporary political, cultural and economic conflicts. 272 PAGES 216 X 134 MM NOVEMBER 2017 9781784537418 HARDBACK £72 / $99 INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF VISUAL CULTURE e ebook available

Popular Culture From Mad Men to gaming culture, performance art to steam-punk fashion, the presentation and representation of gender continues to saturate popular media. This new series seeks to explore the intersection of gender and popular culture engaging with a variety of texts – drawn primarily from art, fashion TV, cinema, cultural studies and media studies – as a way of considering various models for understanding the complementary relationship between ‘gender identities’ and ‘popular culture’.

Men in Television Period Drama

Katherine Byrne, Julie Anne Taddeo and James Leggott (Eds) University of Ulster, University of Maryland, College Park, USA and Northumbria University

In this new book, Kirsty Fairclough-Isaacs explores how feminist theory operates outside and within Beyoncé’s carefully crafted and tightly controlled public image. Through detailed new research and analysis, Fairclough-Isaacs examines the cultural discourses - such as race and pregnancy, gender and motherhood- that revolve around the star.

Never before has period drama offered viewers such an assortment of complex male characters, from transported felons and syphilitic detectives to shell shocked soldiers and gangland criminals. Scholars of film, media, literature and history explore the very different types of maleness offered by contemporary television and show how the intersection of class, race, history and masculinity in period dramas has come to hold such broad appeal to twenty-first-century audiences.

Gay Men and HIV/ AIDS in the Culture of ‘Post Crisis’

University of Leicester

Dion Kagan

University of Melbourne

A tidal wave of panic surrounded homosexuality and AIDS in the 1980s and early ‘90s, the period commonly called ‘The AIDS Crisis’. With the advent of antiretroviral drugs in the mid ‘90s, however, the meaning of an HIV diagnosis radically changed. These game-changing drugs now enable many people living with HIV to lead a healthy, regular life, but how has this dramatic shift impacted the representation of gay men and HIV in popular culture? Positive Images is the first detailed examination of how the relationship between gay men and HIV has transformed in the past two decades. From Queer as Folk to Chemsex, The Line of Beauty to The Normal Heart, Dion Kagan examines literature, film, TV, documentaries and news coverage from across the English-speaking world. 272 PAGES 216 X 138MM DECEMBER 2017 9781784534196 HARDBACK £72 / $99 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE

A powerful female, preadolescent, consumer demographic has emerged in tandem with girls becoming more visible in popular culture since the 1990s. Yet the cultural anxiety that this has caused has received scant academic attention. In Tweenhood, Melanie Kennedy rectifies this and examines mainstream, pre-adolescent girls’ films, television programmes and celebrities, highlighting the deification of celebrity and femininity within its culture. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM AUGUST 2018 9781780768427 HARDBACK £72 / $99 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE e ebook available

BAD GIRLS, DIRTY BODIES

NEW

Sex, Performance and Safe Femininity Gemma Commane Birmingham City University

Throughout history, and even in our modern society, what made a woman ‘bad’ was often linked to certain qualities or behaviours that were seen as socially or morally corrosive, dirty and disgusting. Here, Gemma Commane explores the social, sexual and political significance of women who are labelled as ‘dirty’, ‘sluts’ or simply ‘bad’. Through a variety of case studies she argues that bad girls disrupt heterosexual normativity and contribute new embodied knowledge to society. From neoburlesque, sex-positive and queer performance art, to explicit entertainment and popular culture this book situates ‘bad’ women as models of power, potential and success.

THE AESTHETICS OF CAMP NEW

Post-Queer Gender and Popular Culture Anna Malinowska University of Silesia, Poland

Welding sci-fi and fantasy with alternative history and speculative fiction and Victorian Britain with the Wild West, the steampunk sub-culture which came to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s has recently resurged as a cultural phenomenon. What does it mean to take part in this cultural practice and how does gender impact on it? In the first book devoted to this fascinating subject, Claire Nally addresses how the fashion, music scene, visual culture, literature and politics of this subculture intersect with theories of gender and sexuality. 256 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2019 9781780766430 HARDBACK £72 / $99 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE

How does camp influence presentations of masculinity and femininity in our so-called ‘post-queer’ era? Has camp lost its outsider status? Here, Ania Malinowska argues that, in the twenty-first century, to be camp and potentially queer is no longer a marker of difference, but is aesthetically expedient when constructing a personal style and celebrity brand. Malinowska draws on recent manifestations of camp style in mainstream entertainment, such as that of Lady Gaga, Ru Paul’s Drag Race and the queer styles of manhood (underworld dandyism and post-modern fops) to analyse camp and popular culture’s cohabitation, including both their marginal and mainstream origins. This book is seminal in exploring camp and popular culture in terms of these incompatibilities and provides a new definition of camp as a very gendered aesthetic. 304 PAGES 216 X 134MM DECEMBER 2018 9781788313827 HARDBACK £72 / $99 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE e ebook available

The exotic and dangerous stereotype of the Gypsy woman formed in nineteenth-century literature and visual culture remains alive today. These contemporary clichés about Gypsy culture - both negative and romanticised - have a long history. In The Gypsy Woman, Jodie Matthews analyses why the representation of female Gypsy figures in print, painting, television series such as Big Fat Gypsy Weddings and social media sites like Instagram matters so much. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM JULY 2018 9781788313810 HARDBACK £69 / $95 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE e ebook available

FILM BODIES Films by female directors featuring female protagonists appear to receive particularly harsh treatment and are often criticised for being too ‘emotional’ and incapable of expressing ‘real’ history. Julia Erhart makes powerful connections between the representational strategies of women directors such as Kathryn Bigelow, Ruth Ozeki and Alexandra von Grote and their concerns with exploring the past through the prism of the present. 256 PAGES 216 X 138MM APRIL 2018 9781784535285 HARDBACK £72 / $99 LIBRARY OF GENDER AND POPULAR CULTURE e ebook available

Here, Nabil Dajani looks at how this societal division impacts on the nature of the mass media in Lebanon. Implementing the wider theory that the structure and content of mass media is unique to the society within which it operates, he looks at how Lebanese media have often helped to sustain the sectarian divisions within Lebanese society.
