13 January 2011 MEDIA RELEASE IGNOU focuses on conserving Indian languages “Keeping in mind the Indian government policies about the conservation of Indian languages, we leave no stone unturned to publish our most of the courses in Hindi,” said Prof. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, VC, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), in its forthcoming Hindi publication „Deepshikha‟. IGNOU today is the largest university in the country according to the Wikipedia rankings on the internet. We have set a benchmark for others to follow. According to these rankings, IGNOU stands first out of 61 universities in the country running successfully with 338 programmes which have 30 lakh plus takers. “This has been possible only because there has been a sudden spurt in the number of programmes offered by the university. We have been dynamic in our approach towards education, training and capacity building and have injected 11 lakh professionals in these 25 years,” he added. The central government has announced this decade (i.e from 2010 to 2020) to be that of innovation uses where the country aims to strive towards an overall sustained development. It also focuses itself to reach the zenith in the field of education and development. “Our university is well established in this case,” said the VC. The university is well equipped with 61 regional centres and 3500 study centres. It is the flexibility and diversity of the programmes offered by the university which has deemed it the status and attracted such a large pool of students. It has bridged the gap between the students and teachers not only through its quality study materials but also through its online availability.
