Take a closer look! Overlooking Mark Twain’s mighty Mississippi River, Southeast Missouri State University is the kind of place that comes to mind when you think of college. The beautiful campus is an eclectic mix of old and new. Classic limestone buildings blend harmoniously with contemporary structures. All this is found in the historic, safe community of Cape Girardeau, which was recently named an American Dreamtown by the American City Business Journals. Our academics, too, combine the best of old traditions with technology of the future. Career training and broad-based liberal arts education emphasize writing and critical thinking, which are required in all occupations. In addition, hands-on learning opportunities and internships in every major prepare you for your first job. With more than 1,600 undergraduate courses, we teach everything from the classics to robotics. This extensive curriculum offers unique opportunities—pre-medical students take fine arts courses; musicians confront computers; nutrition majors crunch numbers in statistics courses and scientists play the trombone.

After nearly 20 years of National League for Nursing Accreditation, the bachelor’s program in nursing receives 10 years of accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The master’s program was accredited in 2001.

Across the curriculum, technology enhances learning—in language labs, in the management of stock portfolios, in practicing the latest nursing techniques, in chemistry, in graphic design, in education, in sophisticated science labs and at the new River Campus. You may chose from more than 200 areas of study and many programs that have additional, prestigious accreditations from national and international organizations. This is important because it means you can study a variety of subjects, choose from numerous majors, and meet people who are pursuing a range of interesting careers. Unlike a liberal arts institution or an engineering school whose mission is very specific, you can stay at Southeast and change your mind about your major or enhance your career potential by adding a double or even a triple major. With an enrollment of nearly 11,000, students refer to Southeast as a “mid-major.” Our academic programs blend the advantages of a large institution with an emphasis on small class sizes that makes learning interactive and fun.

The college experience of a lifetime. The job of your dreams. A life that is amazing. That is what most students (and parents) want from a college education. At Southeast, we want the same for you. We want you to learn your profession, gain the experience or internship you need, and help you get that first paycheck! The growing—and changing—student body at Southeast has had an impact on everything and everyone. The physical changes of the campus are the most visible. Two new residence halls. The new River Campus. The new polytechnic building. An information commons in the library. And so on. Students and faculty are experiencing change of a different kind. Classroom activity has reached a new level of productivity, as students are brighter and more prepared than ever. Enrollment is at an all-time high. ACT scores are up. In addition, the number of students who qualify for (and receive) a Southeast merit scholarship has grown by 44 percent (340 to 490) in the last five years. The impact on the Honors Program has been dramatic with more students than ever choosing to participate in and to complete the honors curriculum. All of this means that Southeast has become Missouri‘s most academically competitive public regional university!

2005—Southeast is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC)—one of only two in Missouri!

2005—

Enrollment breaks 10,000 students.

2007—River Campus becomes home to the Earl and

It’s interesting to meet and spend time with people from another country who have different cultural standards. It made me want to learn more about myself and how I can make the world a better place. National Reputation For many, the desire to teach has been a lifelong consideration. Perhaps it is because learning is something we have all experienced in a personal way. Regardless of how we came to think about the classroom, the future for teachers is bright. There are critical shortages of teachers in the fields of special education, math, science, foreign language and technology. If you are considering teaching as a profession, you are looking at the right university. For more than a century, Southeast has been preparing and sustaining some of the nation’s brightest and best teachers. Moreover, we have a record of accomplishment to prove it. Consider these accolades received over the years.

XSoutheast X is the nation’s only two-time winner of the prestigious Christa McAuliffe Showcase for Excellence Award, recognizing excellence in teacher education and in science and math. XThe X American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) featured Southeast as one of 20 national model programs. XOur X program was accepted into the prestigious Renaissance Group of Institutions. XThe X American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) presented the college with the “Best Practice Award for Global and International Teacher Education.” XSoutheast X is one of only 33 institutions nationwide selected to be part of the White House Conference on Education, an honor no other Missouri institution has received.

Southeast students finish with a full semester of student teaching during the senior year—not the traditional 8 or 9 weeks.

Most importantly, our education program is fully accredited by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCATE), which sets the highest standards for teacher education programs nationwide. Recognition is great; however, it is the day-to-day interaction with faculty and the innovative curriculum that help our students succeed. Because you begin assisting and observing in area classrooms starting in your first year, you accumulate more teaching practice and knowledge than graduates from other universities. This approach gives you a distinct advantage in the job market. It also gives you confidence as you step into the classroom for your first job. You experience a variety of teaching settings culminating with a full semester of student teaching during your senior year—not the traditional 8 or 9 weeks, but 16 full weeks of actual on-the-job training. This experience can be in one of more than 50 countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe, the South Pacific and the Middle East, or in a Native American school in the United States. Of course, you can request to student teach in your hometown or somewhere nearby.

Southeast teacher education students get first-hand experience in the classroom beginning in the freshman year and concluding with a semester-long student teaching experience.

Southeast offers 28 initial teaching certifications.

Southeast’s education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in addition to state of Missouri accreditation.

An Education for Life According to surveys by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, most employers are more concerned about a candidate’s skills than their major. The skills they want most include communication and critical thinking, skills for which liberal arts graduates are known. An education in the liberal arts gives you broadbased training for careers in business, the arts, media, education and the legal profession. Southeast recently joined 112 other institutions worldwide in securing prestigious mass communication program accreditation by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). Only one other institution in Missouri, the University of Missouri-Columbia, has this elite accreditation. In addition, our public relations program is one of only 20 institutions—none in Missouri—that holds certification by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Only nine other institutions in the world have recognition from both ACEJMC and PRSA for their mass communication program. Campus media, student publications and internships prepare you for a variety of exciting careers. Students have opportunities to work on the student-managed student radio station, KDMC Rage 103.7, the Arrow student newspaper, and the “U2” campus television station, all under the supervision of faculty advisors from the Department of Mass Media. Students gain practical experience in their internship that is part of the required curriculum in the department as well. Students work with the latest desktop publishing equipment and software for advertising, journalism and public relations.

During the last five years, Southeast’s pre-law students have exceeded the national LSAT average score, and their placement rate in law school approaches 100 percent. Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology, and the Psychology Club co-sponsor the much-anticipated annual Student Research Conference during which students across campus display their scholarly endeavors. Anthropology majors explore what it means to be a human in cultures past and present. Philosophy majors contemplate theories of past and present as they build a foundation for non-technical careers or for law school.

Historic preservation is one of a few such programs offering a four-year degree. Our students have interned at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as the Navy Museum in Washington, D.C., Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, the Harry S. Truman Home in Independence, Mo., Fort Ticonderoga in New York and others.

Only nine other institutions in the world have recognition from both ACEJMC and PRSA for their mass communication program.

Our students make politics come alive by working on political campaigns and by serving as interns in the German government and with the White House Press Corps.

The Importance of Writing …

and what we do to support you in that effort It is unthinkable to send college graduates who are not competent writers into the work force. In all jobs, you encounter memos, reports, proposals, etc. This kind of writing cannot be learned in a course or two in college. We approach writing differently than many colleges and universities. While other institutions designate specific courses, Southeast integrates writing throughout your curriculum. At universities where writing is assigned to English departments, students rarely learn how to write from experts in the various disciplines. In the “writing across the curriculum” model followed here, students get writing instruction at all levels and in all disciplines. All Southeast faculty are responsible for writing instruction.

Many of the jobs of tomorrow are yet to be discovered! Faculty and students are at the forefront of new technology, research and solutions to many of the world’s health and wealth issues. Astronauts, biologists, chemists, computer scientists, engineers, and health care professionals have a bright career outlook and enjoy some of the highest salaries in the work force. At the foundation of our success is an active faculty of teacher-scholars supported by wellequipped laboratories and the latest technology. Personalized study and research are a feature of the biology curriculum. Topics include DNA sequencing, restoration ecology and research that could lead to the development of new antibiotics or anticancer drugs. Today, many biologists are involved in biotechnology. They work on genome projects that isolate genes and determine their function. Our students learn firsthand how genes can be associated with specific diseases and health risks. Pre-med is one of our most popular programs. Our curriculum is designed to prepare you for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). Rich in biology and chemistry, our program is highly personalized with each student having a pre-medical advisor. The results are definitive— our students are accepted to medical school at a rate that is well above the national average.

If you major in chemistry, you benefit from a degree program certified by the American Chemical Society. Chemists discover and develop new synthetic fibers, drugs, paint and other products that improve our lives. They improve oil refining, save energy and solve crimes. Many choose the field of medical technology where they perform vital tests in laboratories. Overall, our chemistry graduates excel. Southeast students consistently score at or above the 70th percentile on the Major Field Achievement Test in Chemistry. Computer science and database management are among the most rapidly growing fields of the future, and our graduates enjoyed a 100 percent placement rate over the past five years. Our computer science program offers the flexibility to customize your degree or combine your programming skills and creativity to develop the next gaming phenomenon in a $50 billion industry. If you are concerned about the environment and want to make a difference, choose environmental science. Our program is interdisciplinary with areas of emphasis in biology, business, chemistry, environmental health, geoprocessing and soils, and policy and communication.

Qualitative analysis and general chemistry labs contain new equipment to broaden the range of research opportunities.

The Center for Environmental Analysis is involved in public health and environmental research, addressing environmental challenges that face the region.

Future science teachers have exceptional resources. The Linda Godwin Center for Science and Mathematics Education provides resources for teachers and pre-service teacher education students. The NASA Educator Resource Center provides materials for science lessons.

Mathematicians solve everyday problems in ways you cannot imagine. They analyze the most efficient way to build a machine, make manufacturing more efficient , and calculate the safety of new drugs. Where there is a need for precision, mathematics is involved. Our engineering physics program is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), which greatly improves your employment opportunities. Biomedical Scholars Program Boosts Pre-Med Student Success Becoming a medical professional is not an easy thing, but with academic talent, hard work and Southeast’s new biomedical scholars program, students can achieve a successful, rewarding career in some of the most sought-after professions. Qualifying students interested in medicine, dentistry, optometry or chiropractic medicine receive not only the rigorous academic regimen necessary for medical school, but also advising and resources to improve their chances for admittance. Every biomedical scholars student has a pre-professional advisor, as well as an academic advisor in their major. A key element of the program is the Biomedical Advisors Committee, which includes, among others, members of the biology and chemistry faculty and representatives from local hospitals. These experts offer tips on professional school application, mock interviews and resources to make students more competitive. Involvement by local hospitals means a greater number of diverse experiential learning opportunities to get students into the world of medicine early in their education. Academic preparation, hands-on learning, specialized advisors and community resources combine to make our graduates successful medical professionals. Agribusiness I will never forget my internship in Washington, D.C. with Representative Jo Ann Emerson. In Washington and at Southeast, I learned it is okay to do more than others think is wise, to care more than others think is necessary, and to try harder to accomplish a task than others think is possible. In our agriculture courses, we make presentations, which alleviated my fear of public presentations. This is great since I will be working with the public every day.

Eleven soundproof music practice rooms, all with a view of the Mississippi River

In 2007, a world of performance, culture and art opened to students and the region at the River Campus. With the coming of this magnificent facility, the number of new students planning to major in the visual and performing arts doubled in one year. Classic beauty and modern technology converge at Southeast’s new campus— Missouri’s only separate campus dedicated exclusively to art, dance, music and theatre. Overlooking the Mississippi River, a Cultural Arts Center and transformed Seminary Building are now home to the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts. Five interconnected art studios for drawing, painting, printmaking, fibers and design bring art students together to share their creativity. Technology includes two computerized looms and projected digital photography, as well as two presses in the printmaking studio. Display your work in an art gallery that features lighting and computer technology to allow 3-D animation.

As a dance student, you experience the intensity of ballet, the freedom of jazz and the aesthetics of modern dance in facilities that are impressive. Our dance studio is surpassed by none with quality sound technology and a “sprung floor.” Dancers perfect the smallest details in a studio that overlooks the Mississippi. They learn alongside students in theatre, music and art. They dance in two major “dance-exclusive” shows per year in addition to musical theatre events. Performing in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall matches the standards of great theatres in New York and Chicago. An intricate “fly system” is used for lighting and scenery and a technical catwalk allows stagehands to move equipment efficiently. Adjacent scene and costume shops, as well as dressing rooms, allow you to experience the broad world of theatre. You can find internships and professional experience at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, Seaside Music Theater, Santa Fe Opera, Utah Shakespearean Festival and Disney, as other Southeast students have. Become part of highly selective, summer master classes such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival or the HB Studio and Broadway Theatre Project, both in New York City. Maybe you wish to study at Carnegie Mellon, Juilliard or Northwestern. Southeast students perform from Los Angeles to New York City.

Missouri Symphony Orchestra exchanged music as well as culture in China when they performed concerts in Shanghai and Beijing. Eleven soundproof studios blend classical training with modern facilities. Music students perform in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. The electronic music lab houses the latest software for composing, recording and editing music, such as ProTools, a small-scale version of the system used to produce the soundtrack of Lord of the Rings, Mach 5, Sampletank, and Finale, a program for composition. Our faculty have studied at Northwestern, Eastman, the Juilliard School and the London College of Music, among others. They are internationally known and have performed in New York, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain and China.

At Southeast Missouri State University …

Honors students do all these things … and more!

Melissa Medcalf St. Louis, Mo. Marketing (Honor Student) The Honors Program made a profound impact on my decision to attend Southeast. It caught my attention as a way to make my resume stand apart from others’. I have made lasting friendships and been given incredible opportunities, such as conducting marketing research for the University to make publications decisions, as well going to the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum in Memphis.

The Honors Program at Southeast is typical of those at many universities in that we offer honors sections in many of our undergraduate courses, which are taught by some of our finest faculty. Dedicated honors classes also are offered. From the classics to robotics, honors students are exposed to a variety of options throughout the curriculum. One of the things that you may find interesting about our Honors Program is what you won’t find here. Other than honors classes, you won’t find honors students set apart from the overall student population. And you won’t find honors students segregated in required honors housing, although there are honors housing options available. Housing for honors students is available on the fifth floor of new Vandiver Hall (http://www.semo.edu/housing/ reshalls/vandiver.htm), which is suite-style housing. Living in the Honors Learning Community gives you access to other honors students, along with the diversity of living in a large residence with all of the modern conveniences.

Go on field trips like this one to the Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum in Memphis, Tenn.

Participate in the visual and performing arts.

What you will find is a commitment to providing you a stimulating environment in which to learn and thrive—an environment that nurtures your talents and your passions. You also will find honors students in every activity and aspect of campus life. In addition, these students enliven and enrich the campus culture. To complement your education, there are additional opportunities for leadership with the Honors Council, field trips and service hours.

The Honors Program is increasingly popular. Enrollment in honors classes has tripled from five years ago. Currently, there are 400 students active in the program.

You can join the program as soon as you arrive on campus or during your last semester of college; however, in order to graduate with honors, you must complete 24 credit hours of honors courses, including six hours at the 300-level or above. You also must complete an honors project.

The bottom line is this. Our program is interactive, individual and fun. It is designed to be flexible to meet your personal needs.

University Studies Currently, the general education program at most colleges and universities looks like a repeat of the high school curriculum: English, history, math, science, music and art. At Southeast, we have designed University Studies to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our program revolutionizes the traditional general educational program, which previously committed students to a rigid sequence of unrelated courses during their first two years.

Employment forecasts show that nearly 70 percent of the jobs in the 21st century have yet to be created. In this turbulent environment, the educated person is one who easily learns new skills and deftly analyzes new information. While specific career training can help you land that first job, a well-rounded education creates advancement opportunities.

Sara Head Fredericktown, Mo. International Business Southeast encouraged me to improve myself personally and professionally by offering a variety of classes, seminars, organizations and events. In particular, I am grateful for the support the University and professors have shown regarding my internship at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington D.C. Southeast challenges students to reach their goals and provides remarkable opportunities in the journey to success.

University Studies at Southeast Because you are probably more concerned about a major or career to pursue after graduation, you may not be considering those additional courses—those early courses—needed for graduation. Career-related courses are vital to your college experience; however, to be fully prepared in today’s competitive career market, you need more. You need to be educated in the liberal arts and sciences to prepare you for leadership, citizenship and advancement in your career.

Study Abroad! Kuan-Ju Chen Taiwan International Business—MBA

Foreign trade. Global economy. International culture and exchange.

Although I was born in the small country of Taiwan, I have seen much of the world—more than a dozen countries—so it was natural that I study abroad in my business program here. A trip to Finland and Russia with my professor and students in my international marketing class gave me insight into global business strategies.

Southeast recognizes the significance of a study-abroad experience in today’s world. That’s why Southeast offers more than 30 study-abroad programs. Some are conducted in English; others are in the language of the host country. Some are independent; most are with other students and faculty. There are short-term (three week) cultural excursions, semester and year-long study programs, spring break trips—even internships. Knowledge of a second language increases the choices of overseas studies, although study-abroad programs in English are available. Our students enjoy an active international component in our curriculum, and each year hundreds of students take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad. What Are You Doing After Class? Finding something to do is not a problem at Southeast. Your biggest challenges will be setting priorities, making good choices and using your free time wisely. The night with “nothing going on” is rare— maybe nonexistent. A typical week offers a women’s soccer match, a classical music concert, a comedy act sponsored by the Student Activities Council, a dance and intramural sports tournament. The beautiful Show Me Center is a performance arena that hosts entertainers, concerts, ice shows and Division I men’s and women’s basketball.

In addition to more than 100 academic organizations, 30 sport and intramural clubs, as well as 19 fraternities and sororities, Southeast has active organizations dedicated to culture, performance, religion, service and various special interests. Student Government gives students a voice on campus. Student Activities Council plans and organizes campus events, and the Residence Hall Association implements policies that help students improve their living environment. Fraternities and sororities, too, have their own governing bodies.

Michael Hebron Paris, Texas International Business

I knew I wanted to get involved in college. It’s a great way to meet people fast! The excitement started when I joined a fraternity and continued as I joined intramural teams—flag football, basketball, soccer and softball. In addition, I was accepted into Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society and joined Air Force ROTC and the Spanish Club. I also work on campus. Few colleges offer so many opportunities to FRESHMEN.

Fraternities and Sororities

Look around and you will probably find a group of students who share your interests. Maybe you will join a marketing club or the computer science club, the Spanish club or the Student National Education Association. If your interest is psychology, you may want to become a member of the Psi Chi Club—recently named national psychology honor society chapter of the year! Whether it’s the late-night pizza run, registering student voters or cheering the Redhawks on to victory, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get involved at Southeast!

If you “go Greek,” you may choose from national fraternities and sororities—well established organizations in which members participate in community service, intramural sports, scholarship activities, leadership and fund raising events. Last year Greek organizations donated thousands of dollars to charities. They provide terrific “home-awayfrom-home” experiences. Do you like playing sports, but don’t have the interest or talent to join a college team? Would you like to continue the fun of high school athletics? Learn to play a sport you’ve never tried? Intramural and club sports are a great way to get your exercise, relieve the stress of school and make new friends. Southeast offers a variety of intramural sports and club teams. If you are not interested in organized team sports, check out the 90,000-square-foot Student Recreation Center including our brand new aquatic center, which features a recreational pool and whirlpool, a six-lane 25-yard lap pool and a climbing wall. In addition to basketball courts, the center also features racquetball courts, a large weight room and cardio equipment area, as well as an indoor track. A second recreation center is located on the south campus to create maximum opportunity for you to visit and work out. If you are into fitness or simply enjoy athletic competition from time to time, you will find yourself a regular at the “Rec Center.”
