Neuroma

with Dr. Salem

A neuroma is a swollen or damaged nerve that runs between the bones of the foot to which your toes attach. It is a benign condition, most commonly found between the third and fourth toes. What causes pinched nerves (neuroma)? Pinching of the nerves from tight shoes or repetitive stress can cause irritation and damage to the nerves that run towards the toes. Sometimes, the nerves can be damaged by trauma, also. How are pinched nerves diagnosed? True Medical and Foot Care Group use sonography of the foot to confirm the diagnosis and to help to locate the nerve damage,

so that treatment can be directed at the exact location of the trouble. What are the symptoms? The most common complaints with neuromas are cramping, tingling or numbness. Sometimes, these symptoms can go from the ball of the foot to the toes, or from the ball of the foot to the ankle. A feeling as if the sock were bunched up can also be a sign of a neuroma. Tight shoes usually aggravate the symptoms. Any kind of bending of the toes, or stepping the wrong way, when barefoot, however, can also cause the same symptoms. If the neuroma becomes large

enough, you may even feel a clicking sensation or a lump in the ball of your foot. How pinched nerve will be treated: Early treatment may include one or more of the following: • Roomier or specially constructed shoes. • Orthotics (inserts) for the shoes. • Anti-inflammatory medicines. • Cortisone injections. • Alcohol sclerosing injections. If these methods fail, then surgery may be suggested. This involves the removal of the damaged nerve tissue.

Chronic Pain May Result from Pinched Nerves

A pinched nerve is the term used for a nerve which is being compressed by pressure that is being applied to it by surrounding tissues, such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This causes decreased flow of nutrients up and down the nerve and results in failure of the conduction of electrical impulses through the nerve. Symptoms of pinched nerve include localized pain, numbness (decreased sensation) or burn-

ing or tingling(pins and needles), and pain in the area supplied by the nerve. It may also cause weakness of the muscles supplied by the nerve in severe cases. These symptoms are usually observed first at night, while sleeping. Common sites at which pinched nerves occur include: 1. The carpal tunnel at the wrist – the median nerve gets trapped and causes symptoms in the thumb, index, and middle fingers. It can also cause a decreased ability to grip objects due to weakness of the muscle of the palm near the thumb. 2. The cubital tunnel in the elbow- the ulnar nerve is involved and affects the forearm, the ring (fourth finger), and the small fin-

gers of the hand. 3. The back of the neck – the cervical spinal nerves, when compressed may cause pain and weakness along the upper back and travels to one or both arms. 4. The lower back- the lumbar spinal nerves get involved and cause pain which travels from the low back into the leg known as sciatica. 5. The upper outer thigh- the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is compressed and causes sensory symptoms known as meralgia paresthetica.
