Internships & Fellowships 2014-2015
Hutchison Leads empowers girls to discover their passions and galvanize their talents to transform their communities and the world.
Dear Parents, Alumnae, and Friends, For over a century, Hutchison has built on a time-honored tradition of preparing girls with the experience, skills, and confidence to become tomorrow’s leaders. Our focus on leadership begins in the early grades and culminates in the nationally recognized Hutchison Leads program in the Upper School – a dynamic learning experience that inspires girls to make thoughtful decisions to affect positive change in the world around them. Beginning in the 9th grade, different facets of Hutchison Leads are embedded in the upper school curriculum in a meaningful way that transcends the traditional, more passive community service requirement that is now a prerequisite in most high schools. Established in 2010 through a substantial gift from Hutchison alumna Abigail Ware Williams ’89 and her husband, Duncan, Hutchison Leads is often cited by recent graduates as a life-transforming experience that enriched their lives intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Many influential community organizations are part of the Hutchison Leads experience, and we are immensely grateful for their support and inspiration. Sincerely,
Annette C. Smith, Ed.D Head of School

Internship & Fellowship Requirements Through dedicated and extensive time with knowledgeable mentors, our internships and fellowships provide invaluable insights and firsthand experience in a career paths or service a senior girl wishes to explore. The semester-long internships include at least 40 hours of on-site work, regular meetings with a Hutchison mentor, weekly written reflections, and a Capstone presentation. Fellowships require an 80-plus hour commitment and the creation of a final project that reflects each girl’s unique experience. Part of what makes the internship and fellowship program so extraordinary is that it captures a unique period in the girls’ lives and builds on the leadership and learning journeys that have characterized their time at Hutchison.
Meet Our Interns and Fellows Mary Peyton Bell, Intern
Mary Peyton spent three weeks interning at Southern Bride Magazine with Sherra Meyers, the travel editor for the magazine. Among her most memorable experiences were editing the Southern Bride website, contacting photographers and designers, and working with the upcoming wedding selections for the magazine. Mary Peyton is grateful for the hands-on experience in the journalism field and knows it will serve her well in her next steps toward a magazine career.
Claire Boals, Intern
Claire Boals interned for two weeks with Germantown News this past summer. Claire created layouts, took photographs, and covered the Germantown Horse Show, an article that was featured in the paper. As an intern, she was able to practice editing skills by helping proof the paper before print. Claire learned to use trade software PhotoShop and Quark. The skills she learned have helped her immensely as one of the three head editors of the school’s online and print newspaper.
Virginia Byars, Intern
This summer, Virginia spent two weeks interning for Dr. James Eason and the UT Transplant Institute at Methodist University Hospital. Virginia first shadowed internal medicine doctors on in-patient floors and in the out-patient clinic, learning the issues related to transplants. The second week, Virginia shadowed the surgical group and witnessed four procedures: a liver transplant, sigmoid colectomi, whipple to exploratory lab: gallbladder vasectomy, and a draining of an abdominal wound with ascites.
Lucy Camuti, Intern
Following her passion for global issues and service, Lucy chose to intern at Be Free Revolution, a social entrepreneurship nonprofit. As an intern, Lucy learned about nonprofit management and marketing. During her time at Be Free, the organization opened its first brick and mortar storefront, The Rev. Lucy ran a booth for Be Free at a July event in Overton Square. In addition to her entrepreneurship focus, Lucy travelled to Uganda with Be Free, learning firsthand how the nonprofit builds connections with their partners in Uganda.
Kennedy Cox, Intern
Combining her interest in fashion with a love of writing, Kennedy selected an internship with Justine Magazine, a national publication headquartered in Memphis focused on positive, real-girl content for teens and tweens. As an intern, Kennedy assisted with photo shoots, designed social media content, and organized magazine plans. She also transcribed interviews and wrote articles that were published on Justine’s website. After her formal internship concluded, Kennedy continued to work with Justine during the school year.
Raven Cox, Intern
Raven completed an internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women. Raven saw numerous normal deliveries, Cesarean sections, adoption cases, maternity complications, and even witnessed a still birth. Raven was also given the opportunity to experience lessons only learned from hands-on experiences: the heartfelt, emotional side of the industry. Her project will take you along a journey through the field of obstetrics and gynecology, as witnessed through numerous deliveries.
Anna Johnson, Intern
Anna spent 48 hours at Justine Magazine in June 2014. Passionate about writing and women’s issues, Anna chose Justine as a placement because of the magazine’s positive content for teen and tween girls. Throughout her internship, Anna worked on content for Justine’s website, such as articles, tips, and personality quizzes. She also participated in a photo shoot and appeared in the October/November issue.
Kelsey Kerkhof, Intern
Kelsey travelled to New York City for her internship with Elyse Connolly, Inc, a full service boutique agency representing photographers. Kelsey is interested in a career in the creative industries, and the opportunity to intern under a woman-owned agency proved to be a valuable experience. While interning with Elyse, Kelsey was able to experience unique opportunities, such as a photo shoot for Vanity Fair and working with images of Matthew McConaughey for his GQ cover.
Hannah Lansky, Fellow
Hannah Lansky participated in an education-based fellowship with a concentration on the Japanese language and culture. Over the summer, she took two college-level Japanese language classes with the Japan-America Society of Tennessee at the University of Memphis campus. Her capstone project strives to incorporate the Japanese language into a collection of artwork. These works are based on nine short stories by Ichiyō Higuchi, a prominent female author during the Meiji period.
Mollie Marshall, Intern
Mollie Marshall interned at Gentle Care Animal Hospital, learning more about the veterinary field. She observed many surgeries and patient exams during her time with veterinarians Dr. Alisha Hezel, Dr. Gerald Blackburn, and Dr. Jill Sullivan. She witnessed several spays and neuters, a mass removal for biopsy, and the aftermath of a perineal urethrostomy. Mollie was challenged to think outside of the box and to report daily on her research of fascinating cases.
Meredith Mathews, Intern
Based on her interest in international relations, Meredith chose to intern at Refugee Empowerment Program (REP), a nonprofit organization serving 200-400 refugees in the Memphis community. Meredith’s work with REP included managing the social media for the nonprofit, helping create the summer newsletter, and assisting in coordinating the Rhodes summer art camp for the elementary and middle school children, which culminated in an art show benefitting REP.

Delaney interned at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she explored the various careers within the medical field. She was able to assist in creating and executing treatment plans in the physical therapy department, assist in procedures such as blood transfusions and rounds of chemotherapy in the nursing department, and explore the experimental field of medicine while participating in nationwide cancer research trials. She took a special interest in the trial-based experimental side of medicine.
Abby Meloni, Intern
Abby Meloni interned for the Methodist Healthcare marketing department with Hutchison alumna Megan Gatewood ’99 where her responsibilities included making marketing plans, spending a day at a branding agency, and working with the media department. Because Abby could connect aspects of her internship to her job at a local clothing boutique, she was able to take much of her experience and apply it to her career interest. She especially enjoyed learning more about the variety of fields within the larger scope of marketing and public relations and seeing what a firm does for its clients.
Reba Moody, Intern
Reba had the privilege of completing an internship with Dr. Robert Eiseman, a local pediatrician with Drs. Segal, Kronenberg, Tsui, and Eiseman Pediatric Care. This experience combined her love for children with her strengths in math and science and solidified her confidence in her interest in this field. From checkups to viruses and various types of rashes, Reba learned the ethics and knowledge about pediatrics and plans to take these lessons with her as she journeys through college and eventually medical school.
Mary Margaret Moore, Intern

Intensely interested in language acquisition and looking to continue her study of the Spanish language, Ana designed a fellowship that would allow her to investigate the innovative techniques of the Hutchison world language teachers. Ana spent much time serving as a teacher’s assistant for Sra. Lejwa. She researched, designed, and taught classes and compiled a fellowship capstone project based on her research on world language instruction.
Claire Sentilles, Fellow
Claire crafted a unique fellowship on two continents, juxtaposing two different aspects of surgical medicine and examining the healthcare systems in the process. Claire spent half of her 80-hour experience at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopedic Hospital in Shrewsbury, England, and the other half of her time at the St. Charles Surgical Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
