CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE

Welcome

to Hutchison’s Center for Excellence 2018-2019 In 2004, Hutchison had the vision to open its doors to the greater Memphis community by offering classes through its newly launched arts academy. Since that time, more than 20,000 students ages two through adult have participated in the arts academy in workshops, year-long classes, master classes, events, service learning through the arts, and private instruction with professional artists and arts organizations on Hutchison’s campus. In 2007, the Mary Miles Loveless Arts Academy was expanded into the Annette C. Smith Center for Excellence. Through the Center, Hutchison shares its tradition of excellence through offerings in academics, arts, athletics, education, and leadership. Instructors in each of the Center’s academies not only inspire budding artists, athletes, scholars, and leaders but also engage educators and parents in thought-provoking classes and lectures. Each year we host more than 10,000 participants in Center programming. We invite you to join our learning community.

Humanities PERRE MAGNESS SERIES ON MEMPHIS HISTORY AND ISSUES

The Perre Magness Series on Memphis History and Issues is a tribute to Perre Magness, one of Memphis’ most distinguished historians and writers. The series was created to extend the understanding of Memphis’ past and present as we look toward its future. Throughout the school year, research projects, speakers, and panels help girls understand Memphis’ uniqueness as a city. Culminating projects by the girls are crafted in our innovation labs and classrooms and displayed for multiple audiences. This year’s projects will center around the theme The Mississippi River: Memphis History on the Edge. Studies will include: multiple explorations of water/land ecosystems, boats and hydraulics, a junior kindergarten downtown Memphis unit, third grade study of our riverfront in hands-on projects, sixth- and seventh-grade girls exploring current riverfront issues, and the Rogers Scholars in Upper School touring and studying a current issue including riverfront developments in Memphis.

For schools This family-friendly musical is a celebration of music in all forms. Fast paced and filled with show-stopping numbers, the play opens with the narrator finding an old book, picking it up, blowing off the dust, and starting to read. The story she relates is of a young dreamer, a man named Joseph—the same Joseph whose story is told in the Book of Genesis. Joseph is Jacob’s favorite son, and to show everyone that he is pleased with him, Jacob gives Joseph a splendid multi-colored coat. However, this coat, along with Joseph’s talk of dreams, arouse the jealousy of the other 11. They decide to sell their brother as a slave. After being raised up from a slave to Pharaoh’s second in command, Joseph’s brothers arrive in Egypt begging for food due to a famine. NOISES OFF MATINEE

For schools Performed by Hutchison’s upper school girls. This classic comedy is considered one of the great comedic modern farces. Act One is set at the technical rehearsal at the (fictional) Grand Theatre; it is midnight, the night before the first performance, and the cast are hopelessly unready. Act Two shows a Wednesday matinee performance one month later. The play is seen from backstage this time, providing a view that emphasizes the deteriorating relationships between the cast. In Act Three, we see a performance near the end of the ten-week run. Relationships between the cast have soured considerably, the set is breaking down, and props are winding up in the wrong hands, on the floor, and in the way. Call Box Office at 507-2460 to reserve your school’s space. date/time: Friday, February 8; 10:00 am location: Wiener Theater, Hutchison cost: free
