CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE

Welcome

to Hutchison’s Center for Excellence 2017-2018 Catalog In 2004, Hutchison had the vision to open its door to the Greater Memphis community by offering classes through its newly launched arts academy. Since that time, more than 20,000 students ages two through adult have participated in the arts academy in workshops, year-long classes, master classes, events, service learning through the arts, and private instruction with professional artists and arts organizations on Hutchison’s campus. In 2007, the Mary Miles Loveless Arts Academy was expanded into the Annette C. Smith Center for Excellence. Through the Center, Hutchison shares its tradition of excellence through offerings in academics, arts, athletics, education, and leadership. Instructors in each of the Center’s academies not only inspire budding artists, athletes, scholars, and leaders but also engage educators and parents in thought-provoking classes and lectures. Each year we host more than 10,000 participants in Center programming. We invite you to join our learning community.

According to an old Japanese myth that claims if a sick person folds 1,000 paper cranes the gods will grant a wish, Sadako sets out to fold 1,000 cranes. Unfortunately, she becomes too sick to complete the task but her classmates finish Sadako’s cranes and make a wish of their own. In memory of Sadako, the children create a monument to their friend in Hiroshima Peace Park, inscribed with their common wish: “This is our cry; This is our prayer, Peace in the World.” Act Two: Hana’s Suitcase by Emil Sher is based on the book Hana’s Suitcase by Karen Levine. In March 2000, a child’s suitcase arrives from Auschwitz at the tiny Holocaust Education Centre in Tokyo. Painted on the side are a name, Hana Brady, 1931, and the word “Waisenkind” (orphan). Spurred on by the children at the Centre, the curator Fumiko Ishioka embarks on a relentless search from Tokyo to Prague to Toronto to uncover the story of Hana and her fate. We see the Centre’s students discover a tale of family love and tragedy; and through their learning about this shameful chapter in history, find a key to tolerance and hope for the future. Advanced and College Prep Experiences for Performaing and Visual Artists PORTRAIT SOCIETY OF AMERICA hosts STUDIO INCAMMINATI’S PAINTING WORKSHOP

For students in grades 11-12 and adults This workshop covers fundamental portrait painting concepts based on the curriculum of Studio Incamminati. Learn principles and direct painting methods necessary to paint a portrait from life. Studies progress from monochromatic “grisaille” painting to value and color studies. Concepts covered include construction of the head with simple planes, anatomical landmarks, value relationships, and modeling form with values. Color study exercises explore basic color theory and the effect of light on form and include full color and limited palette exercises. Paint handling, edges, and the stages of developing a portrait will be explored in this direct painting approach. Daily instructor demonstrations and discussions clearly explain this approach to study and painting influenced by the teachings of Nelson Shanks. Studio Incamminati graduate and Teaching Fellow Natalie Italiano has won numerous awards for her portraits and still life painting, including a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America in the International Portrait Competition, an Honorable Mention from the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, a finalist in International Artist’s Magazine Still Life Competition, and a finalist in still life in Artist’s Magazine annual competition. In 2014, she received Signature Status from the Portrait Society of America honoring her dedication to the educational mission and high aesthetic standards of the society. Her alla prima portrait series, “Portraits of Promise,” featured more than 100 portraits of American teens painted from life. While these objectives will remain similar across different teams, the personalities you meet will not. Since we all behave and perceive the world differently, there isn’t a single how-to guide for dealing with the people we encounter in life. Birkman creates a common language for communication within teams and enables individuals to understand their own personality strengths. Team building with Birkman establishes a solid foundation for teams to increase their emotional intelligence and productivity. Gain the ability to embrace the differences that make us unique, instead of seeing differences as potential liabilities or areas of conflict. The Birkman Method is a multidimensional assessment that measures the behavioral and occupational strengths and interests of individuals. Date/Time: Flexible in scheduling; call (901) 507-2461 for booking Presenters: Catherine Chubb, Lori Guy, and Tracey Zerwig Ford (certified Birkman consultants) Cost: $200 per team member, includes online survey, and two 60:00 team consultations with two consultants 23

GENERAL INFORMATION 2017-18

Center for Excellence Registration Information All Center for Excellence registrations must be made through our new online enrollment site. Just follow these easy steps to create a family profile: 1. Go to the Center for Excellence home page, cfe.hutchisonschool.org, in your browser. 2. Click on the Registration link at the top of the page. 3. On the login page, click on the blue link below the login box to create a profile for a new family. If you registered with us this past fall/spring or summer, you can log into your parent dashboard as usual. 4. Once you complete the profile information, you will receive a temporary password by email. Use that password to reset to a permanent password in the My Account section of your parent dashboard. 5. Now you are all set to enroll! Use the Enrollment tab to see available camps and workshops. Select all events for which you wish to enroll, scroll to the bottom of the page, and proceed to checkout. Payment is due at the time of registration. We accept VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover Card through the online system as well as cash or personal checks. Please send payment to The Center for Excellence, Hutchison School, 1740 Ridgeway Road, Memphis, TN 38119. Hutchison students may charge their school accounts if approved by the business office.

Center for Excellence General Information Admission is granted to qualified students in the order in which completed registration forms with payments/deposits are received. Hutchison welcomes qualified students of any race, color, religion, or ethnic origin to program activities. Registration is required for each Center for Excellence offering. All Center for Excellence registrations will be made online. Please see the Registration Information for instructions on how to use the online registration systems. Once a registration has been received and processed, a confirmation will be emailed to the address listed in the registration profile. Please note that registrations are not accepted without the appropriate payment.

Refund Policy:

Center for Excellence fees are refunded in full when the session for which an enrollment was submitted is at capacity or the session is cancelled by Hutchison. Except in the cases of illness or emergency that are disclosed to the Center for Excellence office prior to the start of an activity, refunds will not be given after a session begins. For Center for Excellence classes, a withdrawal request that occurs at least five (5) business days prior to the first class meeting will result in a refund/credit of fees. After five (5) days prior to the first class meeting, there will be no refund of fees.

Transportation and Supervision:

Students should arrive on time and be picked up promptly at the end of each class. For the safety and security of all participants, girls and boys left unsupervised on campus after sessions will be escorted to SPARK Extended Care. Parents will be charged $15 each day. An additional charge of $5 each minute will be assessed for all SPARK campers remaining on campus after 6:05 pm.

Attendance:

Hutchison will not contact parents when a student is not in attendance. No refunds will be given for students who choose not to attend classes or activities.

Discontinuation:

Students are expected to adhere to the policies and procedures of the School, as well as the Center for Excellence program. Hutchison reserves the right to dismiss any student whose behavior poses a discipline problem. No refunds will be issued for students who are asked to withdraw.

Personal Items:

Hutchison is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Students should not bring valuable items. All personal items should be clearly marked with the student’s name.

Location:

Hutchison is conveniently located on a 52-acre naturally-wooded campus in East Memphis at 740 Ridgeway Road. Campus maps may be obtained at the front gate. The Center for Excellence office is located on the first floor in the Dobbs Center.
