from the head of school 2015 is my 15th anniversary at Hutchison. In that time, we have sharpened Hutchison’s academics, added essential buildings, presented incredible stage performances, won state championships, celebrated our girls’ countless achievements, laughed together, and even cried some. One might step back and say: “We are in good shape.” But we prefer to look forward. Guiding our work is Hutchison’s 20/20 Strategic Plan, a blueprint for the next chapter of this school’s story. The collective brainchild of the Board of Trustees and the leadership team, Hutchison 20/20 articulates the school’s priorities for the next five years and identifies the resources necessary to accomplish them. It is our vision that Hutchison become the benchmark for girls’ education

a leader in girls’ education Hutchison will be recognized for competitive programs in academics, arts, and athletics, as well as the unique opportunities in leadership, service, and entrepreneurship that we provide our girls. Through active engagement with alumnae, parents, and friends, we will enhance our profile and attract future generations of talented girls.

No Argument— Debate Will Raise the Bar at Hutchison Anne Orgill ’85 and Mike Keeney Gift Launches New Debate Program Research, communication, collaboration … the ability to listen, critical thinking, argumentation … creativity, public speaking, confidence. It may be hard to believe, but all of these skills can be honed and strengthened in one class: debate. Thanks to a generous gift by Anne Orgill ’85 and Mike Keeney, debate is now at Hutchison. Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, 20 girls are studying the fundamentals of public speaking and debate tactics under the guidance of Nick Simpson, Upper School Fine Arts/Social Sciences teacher. The program will guide girls through the basics of oral communication, how to be a better listener, how to engage an audience, and the power of language. Once they have mastered the basics, Simpson says, they will start to choose topics, engage in research, and actively debate in the classroom. Anne Orgill ’85 and Mike Keeney

“We strive for all of our girls to be critical thinkers, to be motivated, challenging, and free-thinking individuals,” Simpson said. “In order to do that, you need to encourage or foster an environment where there is a free exchange of ideas. There is an ability to agree to disagree but to do so in a structured, organized, professional, polite, courteous fashion.” The Keeneys believe the benefits to Hutchison girls will be enormous. “It helps the girls academically, it can help them in their future with scholarships, with life, and it’s never too early to learn to think on your feet and to learn the art of persuasion,” alumna and philanthropist Anne Keeney said. “It helps these girls to be able to argue intellectually on both sides of an issue.” Her husband Mike Keeney agreed. “The ability to think critically and to be able to assess arguments and defend positions appropriately will take someone far in life,” he said. Debate will be an important differentiator for Hutchison, the Keeneys said. “If you look at the top schools

10

in the country, a very active debate program tends to be a common theme among the New England schools… And it’s not here in Memphis,” Mike Keeney said. The Keeneys anticipate that Hutchison’s program may inspire other independent schools in Memphis to form debate teams, creating a robust competitive

environment locally. Simpson, who currently advises girls on the Signpost student publication, said student interest will drive the selection of debate topics. He will provide thematic areas as guidance, whether politics, citizenship, social issues affecting the U.S., science and technology, debate about future potentialities, or something else. “Hopefully we are debating things that the girls find really present, pressing,

Taking on the World— Hutchison’s Morehead-Cain Scholars Three Alumnae in Prestigious Program Prove Strength of a Hutchison Education At first, it was a little daunting to reach Caroline Orr ’12, Gaby Nair ’14, and Gabi Stein ’15 this past summer. The three Hutchison graduates were traveling across the globe, meeting and working with new people, adjusting to unfamiliar environments, and practicing their teamwork and leadership skills. They weren’t all in the same place, but they share a special connection: they are all MoreheadCain Scholars at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Orr is starting her senior year, Nair is in year two, and this will be Stein’s first year. Hutchison is one of only two schools in the country to produce three out-of-state Morehead-Cain Scholars in the past five years. Modeled after the Rhodes Scholarship, the Morehead-Cain funds all expenses for four years of undergraduate study at UNC, plus four summer enrichment experiences. Gabi Stein spent 30 days Gaby Nair takes a break during her summer service in Cape Town, South Africa.

hiking in Alaska as part of a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) course. Gaby Nair lived in Cape Town, South Africa, for two months working at an urban farm. And Caroline Orr worked with the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., which took her to India to conduct research.

“We are so proud of our Morehead-Cain scholars. It is a highly selective program and reflects well on the school, but beyond that, these girls truly represent the benefit of a Hutchison education,” said Dr. Annette Smith, head of school. “They are independent thinkers, resilient, intellectually curious, and not afraid of failure. They will go far in their lives and careers, no matter where their passions take them.” Before Morehead-Cains have even started at North Carolina, they spend the summer taking part in an outdoor leadership experience. Scholars are typically hiking and camping in remote areas with guides, braving the elements, and testing their leadership roles … not to mention how to use a compass. “There’s a lot of group dynamics and mentally it’s very challenging,” Stein said of her trip to Alaska. 12

The second summer is a summer of service. This is what Nair was doing in South Africa. She worked in an urban farm organization’s office helping to coordinate and sell weekly produce boxes to families in Cape Town. She also wrote newsletters and emails, and sold vegetables at the market on Saturdays. “It doesn’t matter so much what you’re doing, what matters is who you are working for,” said Nair. The third summer experience is an internship. Last year Caroline Orr interned at Christie’s auction house in New York. For her fourth summer this year, she “independently curated” her experience, which Morehead-Cain often encourages. After interviewing with a curator at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., Orr traveled to India to do research for a future Smithsonian exhibit. She had spent her service summer in India teaching. “India really captured my heart,” Orr said. In fact, she shifted her college focus because of her time there. “I decided to pair tracks in my BFA in Art with Entrepreneurship. Eventually I’m interested in finding intersections

preparing for college and the future? “Really take a look at what you’ve done in the past four years and see the connections that you can make and see where your passions lie,” Stein said. Nair offered sage advice on the college interview process: “Be genuine,” she said. “Don’t say what you think they want to hear. And don’t be afraid to be a little bit vulnerable in an interview. I think they want to know that you are a real person.”

“ [Morehead-Cain] is a highly selective program and reflects well on the school, but beyond that, these girls truly represent the benefit of a Hutchison education.” Dr. Annette Smith 13

Training Girls for Life—

Mind, Body, and Spirit Brenda and Lester Crain Make Major Investment in Training Center When you visit Hutchison over the next year, you may see bulldozers, trucks, and construction workers near Dobbs Field. The sights and sounds will chart the progress of Hutchison’s newest building rising. When it is finished, the Crain Center will provide Hutchison girls with the proper space, equipment, and guidance for health, fitness, strength, and conditioning. Hutchison’s training center is being made possible, in large measure, by a generous gift from Brenda and Lester Crain. It has been christened the Crain Center, which seems apt for two of Hutchison’s biggest fans. Lester and Brenda have long supported the school and are members of the Norfleet Society, which recognizes Hutchison’s most stalwart philanthropists. The Crain family: Kim Crain Lowrance ’86, Lester Crain,

Lester Crain said the inspiration to fund a training center came from his mother. “She had a gold and black

academics, support some athletics too,” he said. In talks with Head of School Dr. Annette Smith and others, the building grew from a small support building for the Dobbs Field, with a locker room and concessions, to a much more significant structure that would support the well-being of all of the girls. Plans now call for a two-story building with approximately 4,000 square feet per floor. The lower floor features home and visiting locker rooms, public restrooms, a concession stand, an athletic training room, and an area for aerobics or dance. The second floor features a training and conditioning room that is five times the size of the school’s existing facility—a space large enough to accommodate a full soccer or lacrosse team. In addition, the second floor opens to a walk-out balcony overlooking

Dobbs Field.

And while the appeal of the training center for athletes is clear, it isn’t just a brick and mortar building with the latest training equipment. An essential component of the building will be human—a full-time certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). According to Catherine Chubb, Hutchison athletic

director, the goal is to hire a CSCS with experience working with the conditioning and nutrition needs of young women. A philosophy of health and fitness is already a core part of Hutchison’s curriculum, but the center and the specialist will expand on those ideas and provide more support. The Crain Center will have plenty to offer non-athletes. “It will include everything from proper techniques to how they fuel their body,” said

Hutchison Serves: Connecting Learning with Service Kirby Dobbs ’82 and Glenn Floyd Inspire Meaningful Service with Generous Gift Kirby Dobbs Floyd and Glenn Floyd are no strangers to philanthropy, but for their recent gift to Hutchison, they found inspiration close to home: their resilient young daughter, Haley. “When Haley was two-and-a-half years old, she had cancer,” said Kirby Dobbs Floyd, a class of 1982 Hutchison alumna. She was recounting her young daughter’s bout with cancer at a recent convocation for middle and upper school girls. “Haley’s time at St. Jude left her with an extraordinary desire to give back to others. One day shortly after her treatment was over, she came bounding in and she said, ‘Mom, Dad, can we make cookies today?’ Then she said, ‘Wait, I have another idea! Can we take those cookies to the end of our street, sell them at the gate, give the money back to St. Jude and help other kids?’ My husband and I looked at The Floyd family: (front, from left) Haley, Chance, Celia (back, from left) Glenn, Kirby, and Lela

each other and we said: ‘Let’s go bake some cookies!’” said Dobbs Floyd. The Floyds recently endowed a new program called Hutchison Serves. While Hutchison has a long tradition of encouraging girls to take on service in the community, Hutchison Serves will further connect classroom curriculum with real world issues. Inspired by their daughter’s example, the Floyds wanted to introduce and foster the ideas of empathy and service at a young age. The program will be made available to girls in all grade levels, from Early Childhood to Upper School. While addressing the girls during convocation, the Floyds spoke eloquently about how service to others can lead to a richer, more meaningful life. Their vision for Hutchison Serves is that the girls’ ideas be the fuel for the program, which is all about taking action. Like the Floyds, Hutchison believes that when given the opportunity to explore one’s individual passions there is no limit to what a young woman can do to impact the world. “One of the hallmarks of a Hutchison girl is a genuine interest in giving back to the community and having

20

a meaningful impact on others,” said Dr. Annette C. Smith, head of school. “We believe it’s never too early to instill the spirit of service, and we are fortunate to have an alumna and her husband who see the value of service.” The Floyd gift provides the resources to significantly expand on the service work that Hutchison girls already do. Hutchison Serves will be guided by Rachel Frank as full-time director. Frank has expertise in service and leadership, and will work closely with grade-level teachers and students to incorporate service learning projects into the curriculum. “Students will discover that the concepts and ideas they are discussing in the classroom, whether in their history, science, or English classes, have relationships to issues in the real world,” Frank said. “How they apply their knowledge toward service work and take action will be the crux of the program.” “Young people come up with the very best ideas,” Dobbs Floyd told the Hutchison girls. “You seem to have the God-given desire to help others, and the creativity and energy to make these ideas happen. Through Hutchison Serves, we want every great idea for serving others that you can imagine. By participating, you’ll learn leadership skills, business skills, and how to be a servant leader all in one program. These are life skills that will serve you all of your days on earth.” Glenn Floyd added: “When you get older and look back on your life, your proudest accomplishments are going to be how you served

“The most fulfilling things that I have ever done have come out of what I’ve given to help others,” Dobbs Floyd told the girls.

Estate Gifts not only broaden the opportunities for generations of young girls, they enable the School to remain one of the top-tier independent girls schools in the nation.

Friends Humbled by Classmate’s Benevolence Earlier this year, Hutchison was notified of a previously undisclosed bequest from alumna Louise Leffler ’69. Comments from some of her classmates follow: “We were blessed to have had Louise as one of our friends and classmates during our years at Hutchison.” Carolyn Nickey Rosson, Memphis

“Louise had a spark that I very much admired. She was her own person, and didn’t follow the crowd. She had a great smile, with a lovely whisper of irony.” Dana Buchman, New York City

“To know Louise and be one of her friends was to receive God’s love by another on this earth, because Louise was without pretense or guile. I would liken Louise to a rainbow—gorgeous, surprising, colorful, overarching, a sign of God’s omnipotent love. In so many ways, our class was Louise’s joy in good times and lifeline in hard times. This estate gift is proof of her enduring love of all of her Hutchison friends.” Dabney Coors, Memphis 29

THE A N NUAL FUND: MARY GRI MES HUTCHI S ON S OC IE T Y We celebrate the 1,420 members of the Hutchison School family who so generously responded to our invitation to support the 2014-2015 Annual Fund campaign. Together we succeeded in setting a new record of support for the School’s operating budget: $923,713. Behind each of these valuable gifts, no matter how great or modest, is a story. A gift to the annual fund may be a parent or grandparent’s celebration of a transformation in their daughter or granddaughter, an alumna’s expression of appreciation for an influential teacher or coach, or a long-standing trustee’s tribute to the School’s timeless mission of shaping the mind, body, and spirit for our girls.

We are especially grateful for the generous leadership of the alumnae, parents, and friends represented in our President’s and Benefactor’s Circles, whose combined gifts total 48 percent of this year’s recordsetting Annual Fund. Thank you!
