Spotlight: Teachers

T

eachers may no longer be referred to as ‘Guru’ but the relationship between a child and his teacher is and will always be very powerful .A teacher can change the course of a child’s life. He /she can infuse inspiration in a child to reach the pinnacle of success. As parents, pump trust and respect into this wonderful relationship so that your child can take the flight to success. Respect your child’s teacher: A child can learn the most when he has regard, faith and respect for his teachers. That can only develop when you respect the teacher of your child. Never ever criticize or contradict the teacher in front of the child. If the teacher makes some error or when you disagree with him/her, talk privately. Make sure you don’t talk disrespectfully about the teacher like about his/her mannerism or dressing sense etc. Support the Teacher: Teachers are also human beings, so don’t expect that they can never go wrong. Instead of treating the teacher as someone who doesn’t care for your child, deal with him/her as someone who is doing wonders to your child’s knowledge and personality. Extend your

support in dealing with issues. Remember, the teacher is your partner in making your child successful, not your enemy. Guide your child how to communicate with the teacher: Talk to your child about what important role his teacher plays in his life. Talk in a way that your child can feel free with his teacher and not take his teacher as someone whom he should fear. Encourage your child that he should express his ideas, thoughts and views to his teacher. Do keep in touch with teacher so that you can steer the teacher child relationship in the right direction. Express appreciation: Every person needs appreciation, so do teachers. Praise the teacher’s efforts and also encourage your child to do so. A card or flowers on Teachers’ day, a token of love on Diwali, a ‘thank you’note, an invitation to the teacher on your child’s birthday celebration will show the teacher what he/she means to your child. Share the stories of your teachers with your child: Narrate to your child how your teachers inspired you. Tell them how the teachings of some of them still influence your life. When you’ll talk about your teachers with respect and nostalgia, your child will begin to relate to his teacher more closely.

A child can learn the most when he has regard, faith and respect for his teachers.

Summertime is drawing close to an end and last second vacations are being planned. Just a few more days and it will be time for all the kiddies to go off to school. I suggest trying something different this year, go “out of your way” to show your kids how much you love them. The smallest things can mean everything to a child, good or bad. So, I ask you to make an effort to “SHOW” your child how much you love them by an unexpected hug, a father son trip to play golf or get an ice cream, a mother daughter date to get your nails done. All this can make a world of difference to a child. “Sing like no one’s listening, love like you’ve never been hurt, dance like nobody’s watching, and live like its heaven on earth.” -Mark Twain editor@hutchcoliving.com P.O. Gaining Training

If

you are between the ages of 16-25 and looking for a way to gain work experience you might want to think about signing up to be a volunteer. Many businesses allow volunteers to help out to give them the opportunity to see if they might be interested in having a career in that particular field. Among those businesses you may want to consider charity work in are hospitals, some long term care facilities, grocery stores, charity groups, and many other establishments as well. This can also allow people to gain new relationships and earn a good reputation for when they are ready to go out into the working world in the future. Volunteers are a great help to businesses. For instance, those who work as volunteers in hospitals help patients to have a more tolerable stay while they are ill. Nursing home patients may enjoy having a volunteer come visit them from time to time just to keep them company. Volunteers in grocery stores can be helpful by carrying bags out for customers or helping them locate certain items in the store. Volunteering your time to help charity groups can also be an enjoyable thing to do. Knowing you are helping those in need can be a rewarding experience that you can be proud of. Many elderly people who are shut-ins need volunteers to run occasional errands for them. Having trustworthy people who can go pay their bills or make trips to the store for when Many businesses allow volunteers to them needed help out to give them the opportunity can be a to see if they might be interested in hav- tremendous ing a career in that particular field. help. Another benefit of being a volunteer is how you are perceived by the public eye. Most likely if you do well at job volunteering, you will be considered strongly should you ever want a permanent job at that particular business. When business managers see they can depend on you as a volunteer your reputation as a good worker will be set in stone. It is also a nice addition to have volunteer work listed on a resume as experience working with others in your community. Volunteer opportunities are also a great way for college students to gain on the job training. Once you have an idea of which career you want to go into, find out if there is a business in that field that has a need for volunteers. This can help you be better prepared for the job and give you a sense of pride while doing it.

Cleaning out the Closet

T

he average closet offers a not-so-roomy 5-foot by 2-foot amount of space. And for average people, that is not a whole lot of room to work with when it comes to storing all their clothes, shoes and accessories. Given changing fashion trends and seasons, closets can be some of the most cluttered spaces in the home. When the seasons change, it’s an ideal time to get your closet clean, organized and ready for the new season. “The goal of an organized closet should center on the ability to open the door and, in one quick look, see everything you own,” says Katie Baker Jones, fashion merchandising instructor at The Art Institutes International -- Kansas City. “This makes that crucial decision of what to wear immensely easier.” “Fashion is meant to change, so embrace it,” she adds. Baker Jones advises getting rid of any articles of clothing that haven’t been worn in the past year. One option for letting go is to donate your clothes to local charities like the Salvation Army or Goodwill. If clothes are fairly aged, another option to consider is donating them to a college. Some colleges collect clothing pieces from past decades for fashion students to study and gain insight on fashion trends. Another tip: if you are still using wire hangers, use plastic ones instead, as they are better for your clothes. Baker Jones explains that the soft curves of plastic hangers “ensure better draping of your garments.” Using plastic hangers also gives your clothes some room to breathe, thus reducing wrinkles and making your garments easier to find. Tired at the end of a long day? While flipping your shoes off may seem like the most convenient thing to do, don’t. “Adding a shoe rack to a door or the floor of a closet is another cheap way to utilize closet space while at the same time protecting your shoe investment,” says Baker Jones. You can find shoe organizers for as little as $9 at discount stores. Once you’ve gone through your closet, gotten rid of unnecessary items and parted with your less than “in-style” pieces, it’s time to pack some of your winter clothes away. For short-term storage, plastic containers will do. “If you keep seasonal garments in a relatively temperate and dry location throughout their ‘off season,’ they should welcome you back next year unharmed,” says Baker Jones. However, in some instances, you may want to consider leaving certain garments in your closet. “Never sprinkle moth balls directly into a box of unprotected clothing or allow textiles to come in direct contact with untreated wood. If you have the space, just keep your wool garments in your closet, but rotate them to the back,” says Baker Jones. “Furs should never be stored in the house. The investment of professional, cold storage is well worth it.” One last thing before you start your closet makeover -- avoid using chemicals when cleaning out any closet. Baker Jones says that any chemical you use has the potential to get on your clothing and either damage the textile or irritate your skin. By following these simple guidelines, cleaning out your closet for each new season will be easy. Soon you’ll be on your way to expanding your closet’s potential and protecting your wardrobe at the same time

Business update

N

o matter what your business, if you expect to make an impact, you’ve got to create and maintain a business personality. With communications changing at the speed of light, now is the time to get creative and go beyond just a logo on stationary. Communicate Give potential customers many ways to find and interact with you and make it easy for them to use your products or services. Make sure your Web site is updated on a regular basis with company news and photos. Start a company blog and keep it current with relevant information, not only about your business, but about your industry and related issues. If you’re not on Twitter, get there. Make it a point to “tweet” at least once a day to keep your content dynamic. Start a Facebook page and hold a company contest to see who can sign up the most “fans.” Branding You’ve got a logo that reflects the personality of your business so make sure your brand is consistent in everything you present and communicate. Your business cards, Web site, blog and presentation materials should all match or complement each other and, in a simple, uncluttered manner, reflect what your business does. The same goes for the physical location of your business. The lobby is the face of a company and conference rooms are often where deals get done, so your customers’ first impressions of those areas are lasting impressions. One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to set yourself apart is by using a mural to convey a more personalized, four-walls marketing message. You can take it one step further and customize the mural with your company’s logo or mission statement. Brian Parker, owner of a Michigan restaurant chain, says his restaurants have become a favorite destination for residents as well as tourists due, in part, to the casual ambience created by murals purchased from Murals Your Way. “They went up just like wallpaper and it only took us about a half an hour to mount the first one,” Parker says. Perfect for business owners, property managers, architects and designers, a mural can be selected from the Murals Your Way gallery collection of more than 5,000 images or can be customized to fit your business personality. The business world is constantly evolving, but with a core vision and mission statement as your guide and an eye on innovative communications, it’s easy to be creative and give your business a personality that will make it appealing to customers for years to come. Mission and vision Whether you’ve been in business for one year or 50 years, it’s crucial to have a relevant and up-to-date business vision and mission statement. Just as your business evolves, your mission and vision statements should be updated on a regular basis after meeting with executives, employees and other key stakeholders. Make sure everyone in the company is aware of the core mission and vision and “lives” it in their communications and interactions.

Organize Online Activities

W

ith more people than ever before flocking to social networks and loading their computers with digital media, many are recognizing the need to get their digital clutter under control. This year, the trend is to organize your digital world, which as most of us know, can be a huge mess. According to a recent survey conducted by Microsoft, 60 percent of those polled say their online lives sometimes feel more disorganized than their physical lives. Crystal Hornsby, a construction project engineer from Vancouver, Wash., is feeling the need to get digitally organized this year. “I have two mobile phones, two e-mail accounts, hundreds of digital pictures, separate online calendars for work and home, and I’m an active Twitter, MySpace and Facebook user,” she says. Hornsby’s experience is far from unique. According to a Pew Internet & American Life Project study from Dec. 2008, the share of adult Internet users who have a profile on at least one social networking site has more than quadrupled in the past four years from 8 percent to 35 percent. Lorie Marrero, certified professional organizer, author and founder of ClutterDiet.com, thinks there’s still hope for people like Crystal who feel overwhelmed by their online lives and the idea of organizing it all. “Our kids, jobs and shrinking budgets give us plenty to juggle in our offline lives. Now, with so many people using various online services, it’s no wonder that many are overwhelmed at the prospect of getting digitally organized too,” she says. “Although it can be daunting, it’s a necessary step toward gaining the extra free time we crave, and finally feeling in control of our lives -- both on and offline.” To get even the most scattered computer user started on the road to freedom from digital clutter, Marrero recommends five easy tips that can help make your digital life seem more manageable: 1. Organize Your Online Activities Have too many social networking and online accounts to keep track of? Consolidate online activities in one place with Windows Live. Partnerships with popular sites -- including Facebook, Twitter and Flickr -- allow you to aggregate activities from these third-party sites -- such as digital photos, tweets and status updates -- into your Windows Live ‘What’s New’ feed, so you can easily share content with the people in your network from one site. 2. Unclutter Your Desktop Treat your desktop as you would the top of your actual desk and keep only active files and shortcuts there for convenience. Use your My Documents folders for more lasting storage. Clean off unnecessary shortcuts that clutter the screen. 3. Get Your Files in Order After you get your desktop sparkling clean, take a look through your folders. Can you consolidate? Are there old files you can remove, or drafts that are no longer relevant? Remember, your time is valuable and storage space is plentiful, so archiving to a folder or external storage space is usually a better use of time than wading through lots of old documents. 4. Time for Your Inbox to Drop a Few Pounds Do you really need those attachments in an e-mail? Save your large files to an online storage drive like Windows Live SkyDrive, which offers 25 GB of free storage. Easily upload videos, photos and files, and share them with whomever you’d like -- without overloading their inboxes. 5. Optimize Your Computer’s Performance For greater efficiency and to avoid the heartache of technical problems, remember to update and run important utilities like spyware and virus scans and defragment your hard drive periodically. “After a week or two of following these five simple tips, you may find that you have a bit more time to finally go for that run, or play outside with the kids,” says Marrero. “I tell my clients that the key is to ensure that your computer and online services work for you as productivity tools, instead of creating more clutter and hassle in your life.”

Boost The Performance

W

hether it’s because of the economy or simply because today’s vehicles are more durable, an increasing number of people are driving used cars and trucks longer. A recent study from RL Polk found that the average age of both cars and light trucks is at an all-time record high at 9.4 and 7.5 years, respectively. Those looking to re-energize these rides with a bit more power may want to consider installing a performance-enhancing aftermarket product. Thousands of such products are available to bring new life to a tired car or truck, and many are designed to elevate the car’s performance beyond what it was capable of in the first place. Here are just a few ideas: Bolt-on power A carefully designed intake system combined with a high-flow air filter can add significant horsepower to any car or truck. Combined with a performance exhaust system, gains can be as high as 25 horsepower or more on some engines. Because these changes offer a good return for relatively small investment, they are among the most common bolt-on upgrades on an older car or truck. Lighten up Another easy way to improve performance is to replace heavy original parts with lighter ones. Replacement hoods and body parts made from carbon fiber and other light-weight materials are available for almost any vehicle, as are wheels that weigh less than the ones from the factory. Handling products Improving handling is an often-overlooked form of performance. It’s rare to find a car that came with high-performance shocks or struts,

and after a few years, the original suspension can wear significantly. By installing new, specially-tuned shocks, bushings and springs, a car can handle better than it did when it was new. Another easy way to improve handling is by adding better brakes. These are widely available in bolt-on form, which allow for upgrading older cars to disc brakes, or adding specially designed brake pads, stronger calipers, and longer, better vented discs. Turbochargers and superchargers For those who are serious about improving power, turbochargers that force more air into the combustion chamber can add 50 to 100 more horsepower. It’s possible to replace the original turbo with a bigger or more efficient one, or add a turbo where no turbo was offered. Superchargers, another high-performance option, are commonly offered by manufacturers in their specialty high-performance cars and trucks. Most people don’t know that the same parts are available for sale to individuals, often offered by the same companies that supply them to the automakers. For trucks and 4x4s Replacing an easily-clogged air filter with a reusable one can save a lot on a truck that sees extreme duty. A wide variety of electric fans and auxiliary coolers allows trucks to pull more and work harder without overheating. For trucks and 4x4s, stronger axles, lower gears and better suspensions are available for models dating all the way back to World War II. Generally performance parts come in kit form, with instructions and an 800-number to call for advice, so there are a lot of products that can be installed by the average backyard mechanic

Reduce your debt

D

oes your monthly stack of bills leave you wondering where your bailout is? For many Americans, money is tight and spending has become more conservative, but this does not mean that you lack options when it comes to reducing your debt. “Getting out of debt is a viable possibility for most people,” says Daniel Wesley at creditloan.com, a comprehensive Web site on personal finance. “The way America views debt and money is changing, and many people are taking advantage of resources so they can become financially secure today and in the future.” Here are some easy steps to consider for managing debt in any economy: 1. Assess all your debts and loans The only way to start fixing your debt problem is to see where you realistically stand. Write down all your loans and credit card debts along with their interest rates and monthly payment requirements. Federal law states that you can print out a free credit report once a year, so this would be a good time to review and fix any errors. 2. Set a manageable budget Determine what your expenses are each month. Food, fuel, insurance, utilities -- be sure to include everything with a regular expense. After you know your cost of living, you can see how much you have left to go toward your debts. 3. Be credit card smart It’s best to keep only one or two credit cards for your personal use and pay off debt monthly. If you have rotating debt like many people do, find out if you can negotiate better terms with your credit card company. It’s possible to reduce your interest rate or settlement on some debt just by asking. Be firm yet courteous when negotiating with a customer service representative. 4. Is debt consolidation an option? The concept of debt consolidation is very attractive: bundle multiple monthly payments into one single payment to make paying bills easier. Usually these payments are at a reduced interest rate, so you can also save money. If you have significant debt, this can be a good option, but there are some things you should remember. Debt consolidation does not write off your debt, it simply transfers the debt to a new lender who will work with you to find a manageable payment plan. A debt consolidation loan is typically a secured loan with your home as collateral, effectively making it a second mortgage. Some loans are unsecured without collateral, but the interest rates are typically much higher. “If you decide to consolidate debt, you must analyze your spending habits immediately and act responsibly,” says Wesley. “For example, if you consolidate your credit card debt, don’t start spending on those cards again once you clear the balance. You must make the commitment to live within your means, no matter what your financial situation.”

Bridal Registry

hile the fondue pot and ice cream maker seem like must-haves when you’re adding items to your bridal registry, it’s important to ask yourself, “Will I really use these items on a regular basis?” You may want to reconsider your selections. And, although making a wedding gift wish list can be daunting, the following tips can keep the happy couple celebrating wedded bliss for years to come. Registry Basics Before you and your sweetheart start scanning items for your registry, do your homework. Consider the size of your space and where you will store your new items. If you’re living in an apartment or smaller condominium, you may want to rethink registering for the super-deluxe size barbecue grill. You’ll be surprised how quickly your new gifts can fill up your space. Next, think about your guest list. Make sure that you have a variety of items to choose from and at different price points -- high and low -- so guests can purchase items they feel reflect their own taste and that they can afford. Be sure to consider your outof-town guests as well, by registering for items that are available both at nationwide locations and online, such as Target and Bed Bath & Beyond, to help ensure they can access your registries from anywhere. Kitchen and Bath Registry Ideas and Necessities Now that the registry basics are covered, the fun can begin. Start with the rooms that you live in and use the most -- the kitchen and bathroom. Do you like to host dinner parties? Fine china should be on your list. According to theknot.com, crisp black-and-white dinnerware patterns are all the rage this season. Find something that will not only match your taste and decor, but also be a classic design for years to come. Want to skip the china, but love to cook? Register for a complete collection of high-end cookware. Stores, such as Sur La Table, offer cool cooking gadgets for the basic, well-stocked and gourmet kitchens alike. In addition to registering for the mainstays in the kitchen, such as sterling silver flatware and crystal stemware, don’t forget about everyday items like measuring cups and spoons, a kitchen scale, electronic timers or even a microwave oven. Love a spa feeling and want to re-create it in your bathroom at home? Then don’t settle for a plain, ordinary shower experience when

Other items to consider, both extravagant and necessary, include: a down comforter, feather bed, pillows, alarm clock with dual alarms and a closet organizer. Beyond the Registry If you and your significant other are looking for adventure instead of objects, why not create memories instead? Family and friends can help purchase items including your airfare, honeymoon suite or candlelit dinners at your vacation destination on sites such as www.honeymoonwishes.com or www.thebigday.com. How to drop that weight!

Metabolism

refers to the rate and method in which your body processes the food that you eat. A person with fast metabolism tends to be slimmer because processed food does not remain inside the body. Instead of forming into fat cells, they are utilized and burned by the body accordingly. A person with slower metabolic rate has the bigger problem. When his metabolism is slow, high are the chances that he’ll find it hard to lose weight. The only way to successfully cut inches around your belly and the rest of your body is to increase your metabolic rate. Here are the suggested effective ways on how you can increase metabolism and facilitate weight loss: 1. Determine the problems that causes slow metabolism. The most common reasons why a person suffers from slower metabolic rate are age, sex, heredity, and physical disorders. While you can’t do so much about the other factors, you can certainly do something about your disease. Make sure that you get the proper medications for it. As for the others, it is best that you consider your options very carefully when attempting to increase your body’s metabolic rate. Consult with a certified health expert to guide you through it. 2. Create a funcThe only way to success- tional diet plan. To increase your fully cut inches around metabolism, it is your belly and the rest of necessary to eat your body is to increase decreased quantities of food several times your metabolic rate. throughout the day. Make sure that you take in 5 to 6 small meals daily. This way, you are forcing your body to process food during your waking hours. Over time, your body would get used to this process and keep on burning fats around the clock. 3. Drink water frequently. Water can keep you filled. Besides, water forces your body to burn fats. On the other hand, if your body is deprived of water, it would save instead of burning calories. A person’s metabolic rate is greatly affected by the body’s water content. So be sure to drink more than enough water on a daily basis. 4. Do aerobic exercises. When doing exercises, be sure to include aerobic workouts in your routine as well. This type of exercise increases heart rate. You are going to need the full functions of your heart to increase metabolism. Your heart will be able to efficiently pump blood throughout the body, decreasing instances of fat cells forming. Aerobic exercises are known to temporarily increase a person’s metabolic rate. 5. Weight training. For a more long-term effect on speeding up your metabolism, try to do some weight training exercises. Improving your muscle tone would decrease your body’s calorie count. The more lean muscles built, the better your metabolic rate will be. This is when you can virtually say that you are burning fats even as you sleep. Increase your metabolism by following these five easy steps. With regular practice, you’ll notice that your body is slowly getting back in shape and getting the form that you desire. Lose weight fast and easy. Make your body’s increased metabolic rate do wonders for you.

Back to School Savings

It

seems like the bell just rang concluding the last day of school, but already it’s time to start planning for next year to ensure your kids are prepared for success. With list in hand, you hit the stores to get necessary items. How can you get all the things your child needs and still stay within your budget? First, check your inventory at home to see what you have before you head to the store. Extra paper stored in the closet from last year or handme-downs from big brother or sister can be useful. After you take inventory, it’s time to make a precise shopping list. Sit down with your son or daughter and determine what he or she needs ahead of time. Then head to a store that can give you a good value for the items on your list. For example, to help parents and teachers access affordable supplies, Office Depot is offering “Penny Specials” on core back-to-school items such as binders, folders, glue sticks, scissors, protractors, calculators, book covers, staplers and more -- all for less than $1. The store is also offering free supplies certain weeks during the summer that include items like crayons, rulers, pencil boxes and calculators. Need clothing for your brand-conscious kid? For younger children, stick to discount stores “you want to find a that offer quality, brand-name clothing great deal and your for less. For teens, kid wants the coolest consider visiting new stuff.” consignment shops. Gently used brandname clothing can be a great way to get them in the styles they want at a price that won’t make you gasp. The age-old problem always exists at back-to-school time -- you want to find a great deal and your kid wants the coolest new stuff. What are the most valuable yet trendy items your children are sure to love? Below are a few of the hottest, yet affordable, items for this year’s back-to-school season: 1. Project Backpack Purchase an Office Depot canvas backpack and your children can create their own design with two free Sharpie markers in the colors of their choice. They just might be the most unique kids at school with backpacks that no one else will have. Visit www.myprojectbackpack.com between June 28 and Sept. 19 and enter your backpack design to win great prizes and a chance to have it nationally reproduced. 2. Gartner and Mead fashion products Bold designs in trendy colors make back-to-school fun. These two lines offer designs in polka dots, paisley, flowers, swirls and more -- allowing your special students to mix and match folders, binders, notebooks and other supplies. They can express themselves and you can save at prices starting at 99 cents. 3. Ativa 4GB flash drives Available in a variety of fun patterns, students love having these fashion-forward devices, not only because they are cool, but because they allow students to have their homework, notes and projects with them at all times. For $14.99 your child is sure to get their use out of it. 4. Tug fun calculators For under $5, you can get a quality calculator, but it doesn’t have to be boring. This year, students can add a little fun and spirit to their calculations with the Fun Rubber Calculator in unique shapes from Office Depot. Want another money-saving tip? When items are on sale, buy extra. Certain things like paper, pencils and folders will always be used, so why not stock up when they are being sold at a discounted price?
