MESSAGE PRESiDENT FROM THE

Here we have the work of over 500 graduating Art and Design students—every one of them a marvel! Imagine the challenges they faced this year. Forced by the pandemic to work from their homes, denied the in-studio, shoulder-to-shoulder, hands-on learning experience they expected, they nevertheless forged ahead, defying all obstacles. They created makeshift work stations in their bedrooms, basements, kitchen corners and other unlikely locations. Focused, hardworking and energetic, they applied their ingenuity to learn, explore, experiment and achieve. And as we see from this catalogue, they succeeded. The work in this catalogue represents 16 of the School of Art and Design’s programs. In it we not only see the students’ finished products, but also images of how those projects evolved. These images help to reveal the creative process and the students’ individuality. Through it all, we sense their resilience and determination. Indeed, this vibrant catalogue— with its bright bold colors—pays homage to their optimism and extraordinary strength. I offer congratulations to these students and to the families and friends who supported them throughout this difficult year. Congratulations as well to the stalwart Art and Design faculty whose own skills and ingenuity rose to the pandemic’s challenge and provided guidance to their students with diligence and care. Students in the Textile/Surface Design major develop their intellectual, aesthetic, analytical and technological abilities to create painted, woven and printed textile designs, while integrating new and emerging technologies. During the pandemic, students set up home studios, attended lectures in virtual classrooms, conducted group critiques, and took coffee breaks together to learn and create in a meaningful remote learning environment. They explored historical and contemporary source material and experimented as they established their personal artistic style. The work highlights the strong relationship between creativity, technique, and marketability. Within the commercial requirements of the textile industry, students pushed the boundaries of design. Despite adverse circumstances, this work highlights the students’ resilience and ability to produce highly innovative and personal designs.

Impressed by the beauty of the natural world, I find inspiration in the colors, shapes, lines, and textures of everyday life. Exploring these elements, I aspire to convey the idea that simplicity can bring the utmost sophistication. Designing, I aim to reach a moment where less becomes more, and equilibrium is created through elimination. Working with my original sketches rendered in ink, watercolors, colored pencils, or gouache, I seek to create patterns that combine the grace and comfort of organic imperfection with the beauty of precision and balance. My designs are about exploring the interaction between lines and forms, hues and textures. I want my work to evoke feelings of calm and unity, exploration and cheer.

LUCY BARRY I’m a textile artist who is constantly learning and evolving my diverse skill set and eye for design. I embrace the unconventional and love experimenting with color and form. Although my roots are in fine art, my education at FIT led me to my love for impactful interiors and fashion. I aim to create what feels simultaneously fresh yet nostalgic, energized yet pacifying, and always in touch with individuality. When not occupied with schoolwork, I love baking, going on walks, collecting postcards, and singing show tunes. Stemming from my childhood in upstate New York collecting bugs and planting seeds, growing a garden is my greatest joy, and nurturing comes naturally. I always want to maintain a close friendship with the earth and its landscape and I love to bring that aspect into my work as a designer.

Whether on fabric, walls, or notebooks, the embellishment of a canvas is what has drawn me to Textile/Surface Design. I love that textiles are tangible and constant in our lives; they combine beauty and practicality and envelop us in warmth and style. Design starts with a creative exploration, and for me, being immersed in the colors, shapes, textures, lights, and shadows of nature is the source of boundless inspiration — whether walking through the park or traveling around the world. These elements of my surroundings incite my curiosity. In my creative process I utilize diverse media, such as sketching, hand-painting, weaving, screenprinting, dyeing, photography, and computer-aided design to bring my ideas to life. I aspire to bring the simplicity and imperfect beauty of it all through the mark of a hand.

Textile is not only a wearable and decorative fabric, but also a way to make a statement about the evolving world we live in. I approach my designs by merging my two inspirations: transient natural settings and my personal experiences. With my fine arts background, I strive to always challenge myself with new mediums and techniques, from acrylic paints to computer software, in order to showcase my inspirations — but more importantly, to spark an appreciation and awareness of the world through my eyes to my audience.

I use a variety of colors and patterns to create a vivid rainbow world. My designs are inspired by nature, therefore, floral motifs are my main focus. These designs will allow viewers to feel comfortable and close to nature, no matter where they are. My fine arts background allows me to paint freely, using wooden brushes and pencils on paper or fabric. Using traditional hands-on techniques such as embroidery, weaving, and painting, I am comfortable creating for both home and apparel textiles. I hope that people feel joy when seeing and touching my designs.

As someone who has a great love of Chinese embroidery, I wish to create a collection that merges traditional embroidery techniques with modern elements. The name of my collection is “New from the Past.” In it, I managed to show my Chinese heritage in textile design from many years of practice and observation. The main motifs I studied are female figures and floral and geometric patterns. My senior designs are broken into three categories: elegant movements with floral decorations, traditional embroidery motifs in home furnishing fabrics, and embellishing techniques on denim. I wish to bring tradition to our everyday life without creating too much of a reminiscent vibe. By transitioning the motif from silk to denim and applying watercolor directly to the fabric, I have discovered a way to renew the tradition through my own interpretation.

Since life is super short, I surround myself with the most brilliant flowers, hilarious pictures, and saturated colors I can find. As a textile designer, I practice the same attitude, translating life’s unrefined hilarity into experiential snapshots in the juiciest of hues. Straying from the pragmatic and favoring the absurd, I choose themes with a sense of childlike wonder and delight. Every hour pigeons eat pizza on the curb, eyelashes mingle in the midst of a kiss, and dogs get their tongues stuck on their gums. Since I get to be a designer in this world — a privilege for which I am so grateful — I focus my energy on those moments. My work is whimsical, graphic, conversational, and amusing, and I create it for all the kids-at-heart out there who still use Crayola markers. My message to them: Keep indulging in the stuff that makes you sing.

As a textile designer and illustrator, I am grateful to have strong experience in rendering and painting, as well as creating textures, repeats, and wovens. I appreciate the value of wovens, paintings, and digital renderings as they allow me to give a handmade feel and add individuality to my work. I design with the goal of reinventing a living space, as a strong and cohesive design can make a room feel welcoming and complete. I also design with the elated feeling that everyone has when buying new bedding, hanging up their new tapestry, or redecorating their home. I look at many aspects of the natural world for inspiration, such as botanicals, animals, and earth tones. Most importantly, I am also inspired by and admire companies such as URBN, World Market, and The Citizenry for their unique accents in each design.

I always strive to radiate positivity and happiness into the world with my designs. Within the past four years, I have lived in five states; Ohio, Georgia, New York, Texas, and Wisconsin. Each move brought new experiences, phenomenal people, and endless stories. Of all these places, New York has given me the most outrageous fashion sightings imaginable and countless sources for inspiration! The various places in which I have lived and traveled have inspired the motifs I use in my designs. Being a textile designer has given me the joy of expressing my love for color and infusing everything that brings me happiness into a tactile art form. I am fascinated by researching color trends and how they are utilized in fashion and home textiles. Creating unique color combinations that bring the viewer joy, and incorporating my travels into art, fulfills me the most as a designer.

“Into the Nature” is a collection featuring pencil drawings combined in Photoshop. I was inspired by a photograph of an acorn in a science book, drawn to the beauty of its shape and texture. My main motifs are pencil drawings, focused on expressing the rough textures of nature. To sustain the aesthetic of pencil drawing, I kept mono tones for the main motifs, with colored backgrounds. “Garden Euphoria” and “Garden Euphoria~Cats in the Garden” are collections from my thesis projects. I was inspired by old Korean painting styles called “hwa-jo-do” and “hwa-myo-do” — paintings with birds and cats. People believed that those paintings brought happiness and wellness. I wanted to feature the beautiful combination of animals and plants using modern techniques and media. The main motifs were painted using watercolor and colored pencils, combined with Photoshop backgrounds. These two collections reflect my constant passion for nature, especially flowers and plants.

Flowers are an everlasting subject matter in my design collections. Growing up, I was surrounded by nature. I am passionate about capturing the aesthetics of nature because I believe in the power of nature’s way of bringing happiness to our daily lives. My design style formed when I first started researching classicism; afterwards, I developed a lifelong interest in postimpressionism and impressionism for their use of bright colors and light. By absorbing all these qualities, I am able to create a sense of uniqueness and mystery in my designs. The mediums I use most often are gouache, watercolor, and ink. I paint motifs in very detailed ways while also incorporating abstract elements. As people in busy cities look at my work, I hope they feel inspired by nature and immerse themselves in the calming environment of my designs.

Our world is full of patterns and colors. A world where there is laughter, love, and sadness. An environment in which things are constantly moving forward, yet we cherish memories and create inspirations. As a textile designer and artist who has a love for all things color and patterns, I want to bring a coherent work of design to people who are inspired and want to live in the moment. My collection is called “Bittersweet;” it features gouache paint, dyes, and CAD, and consists of six unique designs for women’s apparel. The collection includes two different themes: “Rebirth” and “Isolation.” “Rebirth” consists of romantic florals symbolizing new beginnings and new relationships. “Isolation” represents the emotions that people felt during the pandemic. The geometric shapes with enclosures represent the lockdown and loneliness throughout the pandemic. Using abstraction, I created intense personal moments beautifully created by geometric shapes and floral motifs.

I am designing a collection of outerwear and utilitarian clothes for the modern traveler: hikers, road trippers, and roaming souls. With indoor activities being limited, there is a rise in outdoor exploration and travel. The desire to travel still exists. Those who were once clad in tights, skirts, and blazers are trading in their slacks for cargos and more utilitarian garments. Inspired by my travels cross-country this past summer, each print is influenced by a unique place visited during my two-month road trip, such as the Redwood Forest, Highway 101 along the Pacific coast, Salt Lake City, a silver dollar coin bar in Montana, Lake Mead, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Gallup, New Mexico, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the beaches of Oregon. I anticipate this collection to include printed jackets (canvas outerwear inspired by the classic LL Bean silhouette), cargo pants, and functional tops and thermals.

Reaching the end of my journey at FIT, my main purpose is to reflect on my complete experience, starting from building a foundation as a fine artist, to expanding my skills as a textile designer. Here I have chosen my three strongest works, portraying my geometric designs featured in hospitality and home products. Each of the designs represents a bit of me, whether it is the color palette or style. Growing up in Cleveland and relocating to New York City in 2017, I set out to find a place in the creative industry to express my creative skills in multiple industries. With an associate’s degree in fashion design and a BFA in Textile/Surface Design from FIT, I utilize my educational background on top of my self-taught passions of creative direction and graphic design to create projects for both the fashion and home décor industries. The main mediums I work with are watercolors and digital design, combining both to create a mixed medium portfolio. My creative direction experience involves leading production teams to plan and execute different projects within a studio environment, from mood board to printed editorial. My main influences are eccentric ideas that fall within avant-garde direction with a pursuit to expand past every-day trends.

Born and raised in Indonesia, I grew up surrounded by incredible Indonesian textiles. I am a passionate illustrator, especially of animals and florals. Just like my friendly self, my designs are all whimsical, gardenlike, and a little magical. As a storyteller, I find solace in creating illustrations that can make others smile and overcome with joy. Since I will be graduating during the pandemic, I decided to embrace the experience and started creating designs with relatable stories. I love to put a fun, whimsical twist in the grim reality of society. Anthropomorphism is a type of personification that gives animals human characteristics. I utilize this idea as my core principle in designing, as I give my animals emotions and playful personalities. My senior thesis highlights a satirical setting of people not wearing masks in public spaces. Instead, civilized animals are the ones who strictly do their part.

My pieces focus on making fun and bright designs for young children, specifically involving elements of a child’s bedroom, such as bedding and pajamas. I chose these themes because I felt that they all embodied something children enjoy, such as exotic circus animals, extinct dinosaurs, or creating fun projects using bright construction paper. I was personally inspired to create these designs by my younger cousin, who is always going through phases of new interests and is also an aspiring artist. I used various mediums throughout these designs to explore how different mediums interpreted each concept. The circus bedding was created with gouache, the dinosaur bedding using Photoshop, and the pajama designs using collaged construction paper and Photoshop. The bright color palettes I used embody the neverending excitement and play that kids get to experience growing up.

KATHERINE MURPHY 1.

For most of my life I have been surrounded by nature. The forest, rivers and fields have given me so much inspiration for my textiles, especially recently. During these trying times of COVID, finishing my semester at home has allowed me to see beauty I did not see before. For example, I photographed a tree’s bark and painted my interpretation of the cracks in the grain. I then scanned and edited the image to create a design for a hand-tufted rug. I have photographed many other elements of nature and they have inspired me to design other textiles. These include rugs, wovens, knits, and prints for either home or fashion. As I move forward in my career as a textile designer, I will not lose the appreciation of nature I have gained during COVID and know it will continue to inspire me.

Growing up in the Hudson Valley and being surrounded by stunning autumnal leaves and delicate spring flowers, my design work has always been influenced by nature and the details that surround me. I love working with my hands, whether that be weaving, painting, or printing, and find joy in being able to create designs that have an artisan feel and capture the various aspects of nature while also bringing others a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Since the pandemic, I have been residing in the Hudson Valley again and have aimed to incorporate local, natural elements into my designs. As people reconnect with nature and aspire to bring different aspects into their lives that bring comfort and joy, I love that I’m able to produce designs that bring the outdoors in and represent the calmness and happiness one feels while in nature.

I’m a Dominican textile and surface designer with knowledge of fine arts and fashion design. I like to incorporate different techniques (gouache, watercolor, acrylic, watercolor dyes, ink, charcoal, pastels, color pencils) into individual designs, which all end up connected by a tropical feeling, usually through color or motifs. I enjoy working with bright color hues in the entirety of a design, but also as accent colors between deep or neutral tones. Challenging myself to come out of my comfort zone is something that I regularly try to do, if not to break the routine of a continuous theme, then to refresh my brain and be able to start anew with a design that relates to my culture.

Making illustrations is about telling stories about how I personally interpret the world using visuals. I appreciate the beauty of maximalism, so each collection is designed with colored pencils, graphite, and gouache in a detailed manner. “Tomato Princess” is a time capsule collection inspired by my old work, named “Tomato Princess in Salad World.” It is bedding designed for a tomato princess, a young, playful girl. Playful and squiggly motifs inspired by salad and tomatoes were used with red and green palettes. “Regal” is a home furnishing collection designed for women ages 20 - 30 who are culturally sophisticated and passionate about expressing themselves through their rooms. I filled classical European shapes with traditional Korean motifs. “Rococo Angel” is a jacquard fabric inspired by the angel statue combined with a rococo-styled flower wreath. It is designed for upscale residential areas as an accent decor item using classical art combined with graphic art.

As a textile designer and artist, I am driven by an enormous curiosity in exploration and play. My personal fulfillment lies in the creative process itself, not ultimately in its compositional result. Playing with materials and techniques in a tactile, unpremeditated manner is how I approach my work. My designs are often characterized by my search for abstraction. Reducing something to its essential qualities excites me, and I am drawn to the tensions between shape, line, directionality, texture, and color. I ultimately find meaning and genuine connection in extending my creative joy to other people through the artwork and products I make. I want to bring functional, aesthetically enriching, and responsibly crafted goods to people who are conscious of how the things we surround ourselves with contribute to our sense of self and personal contentment. I believe in collaboration, transparency, sustainability, and that a circular economy is our future.

“Tools Touch Tradition” is inspired by African artisan techniques and textiles. This design will inspire consumers to embrace their cultures again and realize the importance of sharing traditions. It includes earth tones, such as turmeric yellow and spiced umber, creating an inviting color palette that reflects African textiles and handicrafts. “Petra” exemplifies an intriguing variety of intricate and elevated geometric shapes inspired by Petra’s architecture. I was inspired by Jordanian women’s fashion and how their clothing consists of different geometric prints. I gravitated toward the subtle earth-toned colors, such as red ochre, gold, desert beige, and black, as well as vibrant jewel tones, such as teal and orange. My jacquard design, titled “Rhythm & Blues,” is inspired by an African painter named Francois Thango. The color palette consists of beet burgundy and metallic gold. My collection is inspired by his geometric motifs and colors that were incorporated into his designs.

“CUBISM” is inspired by the cubism of Picasso. I designed my rug to be the centerpiece in a hotel or art gallery. Playing with the idea of deconstruction and multi-dimensional recomposition, I applied bold colors to show my admiration for Picasso’s artwork. My rug is made of 100% wool and aims to evoke a luxurious boldness. “Cat in the Milky Way” was inspired by outer space and cats. Cats traveling in space will be the design on a beach towel. The design aims to create a sense of people playing on the beach, as happy as a cat. “MR.OTTER” was inspired by pop art; my rug design is meant to be an eye-catching moment in a game room. Made of 100% wool, such a rug aims to evoke a luxurious boldness. I will incorporate medium cut and low cut to achieve a flat and smooth surface.
