People in bussiness 7 This Month in History

Lars Castenlund; Entrepreneur, Creator of lifestyles and Enjoyer of life Life and work prior to Thailand I started out working for an insurance company where I was employed for 10 years, but my passion has always been with computers and online opportunities. In 1997 when the internet first started to become popular in Denmark, I realised the new and endless possibilities that had become available – it fascinated me and steered my life in whole new direction.

1. Mary Robinson became Ireland’s first female president

I was fortunate enough to meet the right person at the right time who was working for the Danish government. He asked me if I would like to become an instructor, teaching public institutions how to use Microsoft products (e.g. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Publisher, etc.). Around the same time, I started to take up programming tasks for my employer, which led me to start my online dating service. We were at the very front of the evolution of online interaction. This was long before Facebook, Line, SnapChat – and similar services which today we take for granted. Back then, people hardly knew how to send an email to a friend, let alone get into contact with a stranger online.

2. Charles Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was first published, theorizing that all the living creatures descended from a common ancestor.

From there, things went fast, and a year after opening up our online dating website, we expanded to several other countries. With our business doing great, we ventured into new areas and opened up websites for online shopping, along with an online service which became “the place” to go for online casting in Denmark. I did several other online ventures and more than 13 business’ going at the same time. Having to attend business dinners each and every night, discussing the same things over and over again, made me realise that this would not be the life for me. I needed a change.

Thailand 3. 1924 Opening of the First Stewart’s Root Beer Stand In 1924, Frank Stewart set out to develop the world’s best-tasting root beer which he intended to sell in order to supplement his income as a schoolteacher. With the secret recipes in hand, he soon opened his first Stewart’s Drive-In where he served ice-cold Stewart’s Root Beer in tall, frosty mugs. The creamy taste of Stewart’s Root Beer was an instant success and has been enjoyed by consumers for over 75 years!

I first came to Thailand 7 years ago where I met Soren – who is also from Denmark. At the time, he was working on a concept called

“Hua Hin Online” which was to be the place for everything regarding Hua Hin – online. I believed the concept and we took it to the next level and launched a company based on that concept. When I went back to Denmark, I opened up yet another business – this time selling artificial nails online in Europe – it ended up being very successful. On my return to Thailand I undertook yet another venture – this time in real estate. I am the founder of Star Property, together with Sumalee Wilaiprasert. Around this time I slowly came to the conclusion that I had fallen head over heels in love with Thailand – the weather, the kind and wonderful people and the laid back lifestyle – things I could no longer find in Europe. The stepping stones were being laid for a new chapter in my life. My ventures into Hua Hin Online and Star Property led me going into partnership with George Mastronikolis and the local newspaper Hua Hin Today. George and I later launched several projects together, one

of them being the resort Black Lotus. I am an entrepreneur at heart and I find it very hard standing still. Whenever I see needs I try to create solutions to meet those needs. And for this exact reason, I was also one of the 3 founders of Hua Hin Butler (now sole owner) – a company dedicated to servicing the residents of Hua Hin with everything from food delivery to carpet cleaning.

Current life and projects My life in Thailand so far has been eventful and full of amazing experiences; each one of them has brought me closer to what I now see as where I belong – creating an amazing lifestyle project where I myself can feel at home – something that has, so far, been hard to find in Thailand, and especially in Hua Hin, hence Electric Mango was born. The vision created for Electric Mango by me and my wife Namfon (CEO of Electric Mango) is to create an environment for everyone – families, events, regular parties and simply good times in pleasant (amazing!) surroundings with the people you care about. One of the soon to be added facilities will be a steak house and a concert venue where local and international bands will be invited to perform. The style of music will be something that harmonises with the home of His Majesty the King, Hua Hin. On the drawing board is also around 200 private villas with 2 stories, which will add a whole new dimension to Electric Mango. The style and quality will be among the very best you can find in Asia. Electric Mango will develop into the hottest place to be in Thailand in a very short time.

Giving back

4. The first Imperial Diet was opened in Japan, consisting of a House of Peers and a House of Representatives.

One of the great things about Electric Mango is its ability to be venue for social and charity events. Our venture into charity began 3 months ago when we hosted the event “Children’s Day” together with Thai Social Network. A large group of 60 less fortunate kids along with their teachers came and enjoyed a day with food, fun and games at the playground at Electric Mango. Seeing their happy faces inspired us to make the events and ongoing thing, and we now have a Children’s Day every second Saturday in Electric Mango. These events has opened our eyes to the in need – which is also why Electric Mango chose to sponsor 250,000 baht to a Woman’s Club charity event for breast cancer. The Women’s Club continues to be a strong voice in Hua Hin for those who need help and Electric Mango will continue to support them and their causes.

5. “The Sorcerer” was performed for the first time of 178 total performances.

My life and future is now about bringing to life a unique lifestyle project and at the same time work to help those in need.

8 Fashion & life style Beautiful Till The End of Lashes…... A Little 60’s Look For Our Lashes. THE MAX-CARA The number one thing to do to adopt this trend is to overload your mascara. Do not hesitate to apply multiple coats. First apply mascara in two layers. Then with a cleaned brush from old mascara or a toothbrush, remove the excess mascara immediately. Don’t wait for the mascara to dry; otherwise it will only crumble. Then move to the next eye and repeat the process. To help get this Maxi-Volume effect, start with puffed bases. Dust baby powder over your eyelashes between the first and second coats of mascara to plump up your lashes. Baby powder has grip, so it will stick to your lashes in between each coat of mascara, making your lashes appear more voluminous. Cheat with white fibres. It is like applying hair extensions on your lashes. How?, with fibre as a base before mascara. The best brands for this are: Catrice - “Lashes to kill”- Lash extension fibres - 245BHT, L’Oreal - “False lashes butterfly” (with fibres). or “Double Extension” (with fibres) - 449BHT, Maybelline - “The Magnum” - or “The Rocket Volume” 249BHT. You can find them in Boots and Watsons stores. Some good tips to follow: To maintain your eyelashes there are some things to know to maintain vigour, strength and therefore their length. Limit wearing waterproof mascara. This is often aggressive and too “sticky” for your lashes. Let them breathe and use waterproof only in the summer or for specific occasions. The rest of the time classic mascara will do. Cleanse your lashes with oil (it can be olive or coconut oil) or with a two-phase makeup remover. An eyelash curler or heated eyelash curler may be nice to curl, but it tends to break the lashes. It’s the same as waterproof mascara; it can be used but only sometimes!

it from the streets to the catwalks, the look is really quite wearable. Blue really pops out from the natural colour and it can make an edgy hot hair trend. Sombre Ombre

4. Heat your eyelash curler with a blow-dryer so your lashes curl more easily and hold the shape longer. Secrets Behind Having Long Beautiful Eye Lashes. Green tea: Add green tea leaves to warm water and then apply it to your eye lashes. This promotes healthy lash growth and makes them longer, thicker and stronger. Petroleum Jelly (or better known as vaseline): If applied to your lashes regularly at night, it helps your lashes to grow faster and makes them thicker and stronger. Castor oil, Olive oil, Vitamin E oil, Almond Oil: All these natural oils help the growth of your lashes due to their strengthening properties. Apply the oil using a brush every night before bed. Don’t forget to apply to eyelashes completely cleansed; otherwise the oil will not work. It takes about two months for the results, but they will be come. Good news! It works for eyelashes and hair (but the amount used for the hair will be much more). But you have to do one thing; please never ever forget to go to bed without removing makeup from your eyes. Remove eye makeup using olive oil or any other eye makeup remover. This is very important for the growth of your lashes.

HAIR DON’T CARE Blue Hues

Tricks About Mascara:

1. Layer waterproof mascara on top of your regular formula to make your mascara last longer and look thicker. It also makes it easier to remove at the end of the day. 2. Soak your mascara tube in a cup of hot water to make the formula more liquid, thinner and easier to apply.

3. If you’re down to the bottom of your mascara tube and it hasn’t reached its three-month expiration date (you should always toss your mascara after three months to prevent any eye infections), add a few drops of contact lens solution to a mascara tube to re-wet flaky formula. Sombre ombre has been the hottest hair trend for the last few years. But the thick highlights may not look great on everyone or you may not want such a radical change, especially if you work in a professional office.

Now sombre (also known as subtle ombre) is here. It is a toned down version of ombre that many different hair colours can easily take on. This is all about a subtle change from roots to ends and is perfect for growing out roots. It is perfect with layered and textured hair. It is great because it lightens up your face with different golden colours and gives your hair a shake up without feeling like your hair style is too crazy for the office. All different hair colours can work with this trend, see it on our celebrities. Clavicut

After the wave of pink last spring and purple more recently during summer, people continue to explore rainbow colours for their hair. The new colour trend for this fall is none other than blue; but is it easy to wear? After spending the spring with purple hair, Nicole Richie turned blue. Is she the one who introduced the trends in hair colour or is she simply following others? To stand out and try to emerge from the strong personalities of the Kardashian family, Kylie Jenner has relied on her hair colouring (tie & dye).

Lance Bass, from the former NSync group proves that the colour blue is not only for women. On short hair the result seems a little strange, but why not. At first blue might seem like such an odd colour to try out, but after seeing

The latest trend in haircuts is medium length, also called the Clavicut. The ideal length of the hair is medium. Medium length hair is also simple to manage and suitable from a fashion point of view. We have already seen this with many famous celebrities and superstars.

So here you are, you’ve seen all the latest trends from sombre, blue hues to medium length. So tell us which one you might like to adopt in the future to get a new outlook!

10 News Work Permit & Visa Proposals Becoming Easier To Manage The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking has given an update on its proposals to amend the country’s visa and work-permit regulations, which it says have received a positive response with some areas already changed by government agencies. Some of the changes include procedures for foreign investors, two-year visa for teachers, online 90 day reporting and improved procedures for work permit applications. Issara Wongkusolkij, President of the JSCCIB and Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said the main amendment to the work-permit regulations proposed to the government concerned the separation of regulations for unskilled immigrant workers

and foreign investors, in order to provide more support for investors, alongside the improvement of various business and foreign visas. Kalin Sarasin, Secretary-General of the Chamber, said there had been a meeting between the Interior Minister, the Labour Ministry, the Immigration Bureau, the Foreign Ministry, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the JSCCIB. He commented that the discussion has already led to some changes in the visa and work-permit regulations. These include an improved procedure for applications for work permits, an online option for 90-day reporting, and the exemption from work-permit regulations for a foreign businessperson merely in the Kingdom for a meeting.

Business operators who want to visit an exhibition in Thailand will also be exempted from having to get a work permit, but they will still need one if they want to open a booth or trade at a fair. However, if it is a state-run exhibition, any foreign operator who wants to open a booth or trade at the event will not require a work permit. Foreign teachers can now apply for a maximum two-year visa, but they need a work permit guaranteeing their employment. Foreign students will still need to apply for a year-on-year visa, while foreigners who want to visit to use the healthcare service in Thailand will be granted a permit to stay up to 60-90 days, with an extension possible with the presentation of a doctor’s certificate.

However, Kalin said information regarding work-permit and visa regulations, procedures and applications still needed to be more widely available and much easier to understand. The JSCCIB has urged government agencies to increase the use of technology in order to provide better access for foreigners.

Beware Of False Visa Extension Stamps

Singkhon Border Point to

The Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau has warned that fake visa extension stamps have been found in the passports of foreign visitors departing Thailand

consular section of Sweden’s embassy in Bangkok said; “handle all visa extensions by yourself,” after seeing three cases of false visa stamps at the Embassy.

The Thai and Myanmar leaders have agreed to upgrade the Singkhon border crossing to the status of a permanent crossing point, a government official has advised.

Police Lieutenant General Sakda Chuenpakdee, the Commissioner of The Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau, has through Police Colonel Voravat Amornvivat, Deputy Commander of Investigations, has requested that the following warning be provided to all foreigners in Thailand:

It is suggested that anyone who is uncertain about the validity of a stamp in their passport or validity of an immigration receipt after dealing with immigration agents go to the Hua Hin Immigration Office with their concerns.

The Governor of Prachuab Khiri Khan, Weera Sriwatanathrakul said that during his official visit to Myanmar, the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and President Thein Sein discussed an upgrade of the Singkhon border crossing. This is about 22 kilometers from Prachuapkhirikhan town. Both countries agreed that an upgrade could be done before the confirmation of a border area survey report, from the Thai-Myanmar Joint Boundary Commission.

“Recently Immigration has found a number of passports with fake rubber stamps, as people are departing from the Kingdom. Please be aware that there are agents and people who have sold fake visa extension stamps to unsuspecting foreigners. Please be careful when applying through a visa extension agent, that the agent shows you an official receipt of 1,900 from Immigration, for your extension.” However the validity of an offered ‘official receipt’ may also be in question. This is not the first time warnings have been issued about this ‘scam’. Going back as far as 2003, an official from the HUA HIN TODAY, November 2014

The example below is of a genuine extension stamp:

Become a Permanent crossing

The Thai government can proceed to make an announcement of the upgrade after the approval of cabinet. There will be a celebration of the opening of the permanent crossing point and activities to promote the relationship between the two countries. This is an important step forward for the economy in Prachuab Khiri Khan province, and helps prepare it for the AEC integration next year, said the governor.

The PM’s visit to Myanmar also saw the signing of a sister cities agreement between Prachuab Khiri Khan province of Thailand and Marid City of Myanmar. This plan has been proposed a number of times in the past. A previous announcement for the opening was reported in Hua Hin in 2012 although the plan did not eventuate.

Joys Open Golf Top Ten Golfing One Liners Tournament 2014 Golf is one of the few sports where so many jokes are told. After all, football or tennis jokes are very few and far between. It’s also an opportunity for spontaneous one-liners. Here is our list of the best, just to prove the point! 10. Ben Crenshaw: “I’m five inches from being an outstanding golfer. That’s the distance my left ear is from my right.” 9. Arthur Daley: “Golf is like a love affair. If you don’t take it seriously, it’s no fun; if you do take it seriously, it breaks your heart.”

16 Wellness Allergy Alert!

The prevalence of allergic diseases is rising dramatically worldwide, both in developed and developing countries. In Thailand, the adoption of more Westernised lifestyles with exposure to an increased and different range of food and environmental experiences may explain the local increase. An allergic reaction is when the body’s defense system reacts against substances which do not commonly cause troubles, and which are normally tolerated by most of the people.

and managing allergy issues is ideal as the increase is especially problematic for children, who are bearing the burden of the rising trend. She sees 10 -15 patients every day.

Fortunately Hua Hin has access to an expert on the subject. Dr Onsuree Boonyaviwat is a pediatric allergist and immunologist at the Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin. A combination of specialising in both children’s medicine

We met with Dr Boonyaviwat who explained some of the mysteries of the human allergic responses to genetic and environmental factors, including the issues of food allergies. Food is especially important with cow’s milk

and eggs featuring high on the lists of food allergens. Peanuts, a common ingredient in Thai food, are also a major No, No for some! Symptoms such as skin reactions and sneezing (often with nose obstruction), coughing, Itching eyes, breathing difficulties, stomach pain or cramps are all potential indicators of an allergic response. This is especially true if there is a family history.

Thanks to Dr Boonyaviwat for her time and listening to silly questions about being allergic to cucumbers; she doesn’t like them either. However it’s a bit like talking about toothache which inevitably leads to your tongue exploring your teeth. Talking about

Thai Massage by Blind has been open for 20 years. It is a Traditional Thai massage place where blind people give the service. Since they are blind, their senses of feelings are strong and effective. They offer clients an experience that releases them from daily stress. They also offer traditional Thai massage and therapy for other health problems.

Blind people have a very sensitive approach to the different kinds of massage. Whether you are interested in foot massage, body massage or even oil massage they will help you enjoy and relax. Before the massage started I was given a pair of clean cotton pajama-type trousers to wear. The room was clean had air-conditioning with curtains for privacy. The masseuse was good and gave me a good work over after which I felt a lot better and revived. After completing the task, the blind masseuse then changed the bed sheets for their next customer. I felt compelled to give more money than the price listed because of their hospitality. She was happy with the additional cash and left the room to join her other colleagues sitting outside. Full marks for the Thai Massage by the Blind and I fully recommend it.

My friend recommended that I try this service at a building situated south of the Golden Palace. Upon arrival the local manager Mr. Pong and his wife welcomed my friend and I and inquired about our needs. Neither of us spoke Thai, but the staff was friendly and professional so we didn’t run into any difficulties with the language barrier.

Finally it’s worth considering our graph which shows the pattern for the development of allergic diseases.

When children have symptoms that may not be life threatening, they can become much more than a nuisance. Although allergies cannot be cured, both diagnosis and management have much to offer, making a significant difference to the quality of life. Children with symptoms that lead to loss of sleep quality may experience learning and developmental problems as well as a reduction in their respiratory function. The diagnostic tools include a ‘skin prick’ test to discover the allergen as well as blood and lung function testing. Dr Boonyaviwat knows first-hand how these tests can be effective as she is also subject to some allergy issues and needed to self-diagnose. Then there are a multitude of symptom reduction options including de-sensitisation techniques, not curing but addressing the quality of life issues.

Thai Massage By The Blind

allergies means you can’t help but sniffling a little just at the thought.

As Dr Boonyaviwat explained, people with allergic predisposition often follow the same clinical course, with changes according to age. This is known as the ‘ALLERGY MARCH’, recognised changes in symptoms to allergens according to age. . Finding the cause as early as possible will help stop an allergy progression, a task Hua Hin’s allergy specialist understands with outcomes that mean the wheezing and sneezing days (and nights) may be over.

Cha-Am Beach Should Be Better Organised, Says Mayor A meeting to consider the monitoring of public areas on Cha-Am beaches was recently held at the Cha-Am Municipality. Chaired by the Deputy Governor of Phetchaburi Dr. Krai Bunbandan, the meeting had many participants, most of whom were public officers. Those in attendance included Pol. Maj. Gen. Wichanwat Borirakkul, Col. Suradet Prakhenri, Col. Sihadet Disonthichot, the chief officer of Phetchaburi Provincial Office Mr. Jatuphol Piyamputra, the ChaAm District Chief Mr. Parinya Phothisat and the Mayor of Cha-Am Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri. The Phetchaburi Provincial Office has received complaints from tourists about problems of using public areas on Cha-Am beaches caused by some venders and owners of folding beds on the beaches. The Governor would like to set up a committee to monitor the areas closely. The committee, chaired by the Deputy

Governor of Phetchaburi with the ChaAm District Chief as the secretary, will be responsible for making all public areas on the beaches well-organised and give the Governor a progress report on a regular basis. At the meeting, the chairperson explained to the participants about law and regulations that could be applied and enforced if necessary, particularly the Article 122 from the Act of Local Administration (Vol. 11) of 2008 which enables the District Chief to work with members of local administrative

offices to protect public areas of the country and allow people to use the areas without conflict. In addition, the regulations of the Interior Ministry of Thailand regarding taking care of and protecting public areas of Thailand issued in 2010 also enables the District Chief and local administrative offices to monitor and protect the public areas. The Cha-Am District Chief, as the committee secretary, informed the meeting participants about some measures that the Cha-Am District Office should put in place together with the Cha-Am Municipality. They are: Street venders on footpaths in the area of the Cha-Am beaches should provide space for people to walk conveniently. They need to dress properly and provide customers with an exact price list. 31 shop owners whose buildings are built on public areas should be informed that their buildings will be pulled down and the officers concerned will also monitor other public areas allegedly trespassed.

Bryde’s whales spotted off Phetchburi coast A pod of more than 10 Bryde’s whales have been spotted off the Phetchburi coast in the Gulf of Thailand, forcing local fishing boats to stop fishing and turn into tour boats to ferry tourists to have close encounter of the sea mammals.

Concerned officers were asked to probe a legal case in which an owner of a restaurant and an owner of a hotel were involved. Shops and restaurants near Wat Neranchararam Buddhist Monastery should discuss public area management with the Buddhist monks. Finally, the Deputy Governor of Phetchaburi talked about establishment of one more Centre managed by the ChaAm Municipality on the beach besides the existing one at the municipal office. The Centre will help visitors and tourists who would like to complain about any problems on Cha-Am beaches. The Cha-Am Municipality, the Cha-Am local police office, the Phetchaburi office of Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Phetchaburi Tourism Business Association will discuss recruiting staff to work at the new centre.

New Artificial Reefs for Cha-Am in Muang District and Cha-Am Beach are the major places where artificial reefs are likely to be placed.

He said normally Bryde’s whales will enter the Gulf of Thailand and come near Phetchburi coast during September to March. But this year more whales have come, he said and urged tourists to visit Phetchburi before they returned to deep sea.

Aiming to improve and develop coastal areas for fishing, artificial reefs can aid rehabilitation of the ecosystem of coastal areas. Doing so will help balance the underwater food chain as well as

The rare Bryde’s whales were seen enjoying themselves hunting for food near the coast in the Ban Laem district of Phetburi province. The appearance of the Bryde’s whales prompted the Hat Chao Samran municipality mayor Boonyod Maklai to advise local fishermen to halt fishing and turn their boats to ferry tourists to see the whales as now most fishermen were suffering loss when few fish were caught, and that they could hardly make ends meet.

Other public areas apart from the beaches have been affected.

The Mayor of Cha-Am Mr. Nukul Pornsomboonsiri has chaired a meeting to discuss placing new artificial reefs along the Petchaburi coast The meeting attended by fishery departmental staff from Phetchaburi, Cha-Am’s district office, staff of Cha-Am Municipality and representatives of local fishermen in ChaAm.

A Bryde’s whale is approximately 13.7 metres to 14.5 metres long and weighs about 17 tonnes. In 2012, it was estimated that only 20 remained in the Gulf of Thailand.

Placing artificial reefs in Cha-Am is a major project to promote and provide underwater sanctuary and hiding places in the marine habitat. It will be carried out with a budget approved under the Phetchaburi Provincial Plan. This meeting enabled the stakeholders to discuss where to place the artificial reefs. Laem Phak Bia in Ban Laem District, Chao Samran Beach

HSBC poll ranks kingdom 7th best globally

Opportunities for sport are one of the factors that made Thailand the third most-popular choice of destination for expats surveyed by British bank HSBC. Affordable quality of life was the kingdom’s biggest attraction, 140 Thailand-based expats said. “Thailand emerges from the 2014 Expat Explorer survey as the best destination for expats looking for an improved lifestyle at a low cost,” the British bank said. “Over twothirds of expats say they associate Thailand with a higher quality of life (69%) and 72% say they have greater levels of disposable income than they did before moving to the country (much higher than the global average of 53%).” The poll - said to be the world’s largest of its type - questioned 9,300 people working in various sectors and mostly aged between 35 and 54. They were asked about their financial situation - such as salary, savings and the local economy - as well as their quality of life and family issues such as education opportunities for children. Singapore - the top expat choice in Asia and second overall globally - “performs solidly in all areas accounting for quality of life” while offering good economic opportunities, the survey said. Meanwhile, China - second in Asia and third overall - was a top country for high-earners, with one in four of respondents there earning more than $300,000 a year, and having more disposable income to spend on their social lives. The lowest-ranked of the 34 countries was HUA HIN TODAY, November 2014

Thailand Third-Favourite Asian Destination for Expats Thailand is the third-favourite destination in Asia among the world’s expats and the seventh-best globally, a poll on quality of life for bank HSBC has found.

Mega transport Projects Get Cabinet Approval

Egypt, followed by the United Kingdom and Brazil. Thailand did not make the top 10 favourite countries among high-income earners. But more frugal expats - most of them older - named the kingdom as the best place for affordable, quality living. “Expats in Thailand and Vietnam (sixth in Asia and 16th overall) point out how cost-effective it is to live in these destinations, with many saying that the countries offer much better value than home,” the bank said. The poll queried 140 expats in Thailand, 38% of whom hailed from the United Kingdom, 14% from the United States and 9% from Canada. A quarter of the respondents worked in education while another quarter were employed in marketing, media, hospitality, travel, and tourism. The sample skewed older, with 30% of those answering being 55 or over and 44% ranging from 35 to 54. Two-thirds of the 140 expats surveyed were male. The expats said they appreciated paying less on utilities, accommodations, public transport, and groceries while 78% said the quality of their accommodation improved or stayed the same since moving. Parents ranked Thailand No 1 in the world for cost of childcare and children’s confidence. The respondents sounded like they were a bit lonely, however: Thailand ranked near the bottom of the 34 countries surveyed when it came to learning the local language, making friends and feeling welcome at work. Thailand also ranked 32nd on expats’ feelings about the environment. Expats in Thailand also bemoaned the quality education and healthcare, with education ranking 30th globally and healthcare 13th.

The cabinet has approved the launch of several mass transit projects that it hopes will convince people to turn to public transport services from driving their own cars in their daily travels to work. The projects involve contracts to build six electric train routes, procure city buses and build new motorways. The Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning deputy director-general Chaiwat Thongkamkoon said bidding for six electric train projects which includes the Green Line (Mor Chit-Saphan Mai-Khu Khot), the Orange Line (Cultural CentreMin Buri), and the Pink Line (Khaerai-Min Buri), will be called next year. On public transport, he said the first lot of 489 of 3,183 natural gas-fuelled buses will be bought between January to March next

year. With the new buses entering service, he expected more people will give up their private cars in favour of public transport. Also approved in principle by the cabinet is the widening of roads nationwide to four lanes and building four new motorways: Pattaya-Mabtaphut (89 kms), Bang Pain-Nakhon Ratchasima (196 kms), Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi (96 kms), and Nakhon Pathom-Cha-am (118 kms). The cabinet also endorsed the 1.435-metre standard gauge for rail tracks on three routes: Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Ratchasima-Nong Khai, and Bangkok-Rayong. Under the new track standard, train will travel faster will at a top speed of 160 kilometres an hour.

Cha-Am’s (temporary) Floating Market A Thai colleague asked me whether I knew about the new Cha-Am Floating Market. Later that evening I headed off to the ChaAm Wednesday Night Market and realised that I had been the butt of a bad joke. After two days of virtually non-stop rain, the usually dry market had become just that; a floating market. Two thirds of the area adjacent to the Cha-Am Railway Station was underwater and the usually very busy scene suffering. Most vendors were unable to operate and there was even a jet ski on standby. Mid October was a very wet period for the region. Lots of roadside watery hazards and roofing maintenance required. Historically October is the wettest month of the year, so no one should really be surprised.

We are all looking forward to dryer days ahead and the Wednesday Night Market returning to its place on the Cha-Am shopping scene. To my colleague with the bad joke, thanks, we don’t really need a floating market in Cha-Am. I’ll try the dryland version again next week.

world heritage 21 The Cultural & Natural Heritage of Thailand International Recognition of Our Most Important Heritage Sites What makes the concept of World Heritage exceptional is its universal application. World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located. Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Latin America make up our world’s heritage. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.

The winner of the contest was Ms. Silpsupha Noknuam, a higher primary education student, who received a scholarship, a trophy and a certificate from SCBLIFE.

An Interview with Andrew Stocks

Andrew is one of Hua Hin most successful property developers, hotel owner, entrepreneur, founder of the Power of Love Organisation and The Power of Love International Church. I came on holiday to Hua Hin just for the weekend and I was introduced to a contact who I could do a good property deal on. It was a good deal so I decided to move to Hua Hin. I still love Pattaya very much. I think it will always be my real home. It was where I was bought up. So many people put Pattaya down, but if you’re positive, there are so many wonderful good and positive things about Pattaya. It’s up to us what we choose to see. I chose to see the good things.

then if I still don’t make it, and only get half way; I still have got more than I would have done if I had set a normal goal. If you could offer people one piece of advice for their life what would it be? I guess it would be to tell people to get to know God and go out and open your heart, love the world and wait and see what comes back. It’s a Miracle, a real Miracle.

What makes you tick? We I guess it used to be money, I became a Millionaire a reasonably young, but I realised It wasn’t the thing that made me happy. I realised I was just greedy. Then I found Jesus and I found out that I have found true inner happiness right from the soul. Nowadays, I just love to work for God; he is the best boss anyone could ever have. I gave up working for a salary because He can give me much more than anyone in the world could ever give me. What made you first move to Thailand? I originally came to Thailand on holiday many years ago, I stayed here on my first time for three months, I stayed at The Royal Garden Resort in Pattaya, now The Pattaya Marriott Resort and Spa. My first day here I didn’t like it because it wasn’t what I was used to. However, as the days went by, I fell in love with the beautiful Thai people and I knew then that one day I wanted to live in Thailand. So I went home, worked hard on my dream and I came to live in Thailand. Andrew, you were very well known in Pattaya and it seems everyone knew who you were and you were successful, why would you want to move away from Pattaya to come to live in Hua Hin?

What is your goal now? My Goal now is to get our church room full with 500 people. I set this goal because I noticed that most churches around Hua Hin have around 20 to 30 people are they never seem to grow bigger. I believe in my personal opinion that it’s because too many churches are driving away people by judging them instead of loving them. I want everyone of our 500 people to have a close relationship with Jesus and go out and show everyone the light, to be a friend to the lonely, to be there for the sick, and to be a map to all those that are lost. When we do that, I truly believe that God will bless us with so much more than we could ever of imagined. I like to set goals that most people would think impossible. I always set goals much bigger than I think possible too, HUA HIN TODAY, November 2014

News 27 Fort Thanarat – It’s Not Really A Tourist Resort! We were prompted to visit the Fort Thanarat Thai Army base, probably the largest in Thailand, after receiving a recent ‘news report’. Perhaps as a result of translation problems, but also in the Thai language version, the ‘news report’ seemed to be encouraging visitors to a tourist resort rather than the base of the Thai Infantry and Armed Forces Preparatory School.

An appointment was made for a visit and an interview with the Camp Commander, Major General Nopadon Yimthanom, it’s always wise check out news sources, particularly if something doesn’t sound quite right. After some bemusement at our questions about overnight activities for visiting tourists, we showed Khun Ram (that’s his nickname) our Thai language ‘news item’. After some amusement at the content, he offered his congratulations for bothering to check out the reality. Camp Thanarat is based on about 600,000 hectares of land, just before Pranburi town with the entrance on the western side of Petchakasem Road. The base is home to around 5,000 soldiers but with their families included there is something like 20,000 people living in a small town with schools, a hospital and markets. With the proper administrative arrangements there is an opportunity for visiting groups, particularly students to get a taste of army life here with a 10 metre jump tower, cliff climbing, obstacle course and target shooting. There are also some ‘extra curricula’ facilities such as a golf course and sports stadium. The sports

stadium has been home to the Hua Hin City Football Club and the golf course is open to the public. To most Westerners the notion of the army managing a golf course may leave heads shaking, but that’s a common feature of many golf courses in Thailand. The nearby Suan Son (Sea Pines) course is just one other example. Another feature of Fort Thanarat is the Army Museum. This is a treasure trove of military memorabilia, with weaponry, uniforms, photos and murals through the ages. You can see the hand held spears and swords from conflicts between old Siam and Burma. There are also exhibits of Thomson Machine Guns (1920’s), French muzzle loading muskets (1840’s), Winchester rifles (1860’s), French Mauser rifles (1900’s), German Luger pistols, rocket and grenade launchers, Smith & Western and Browning revolvers and even gas masks. Outside there are retired armored army vehicles and heavy artillery. Within the camp’s compound, there is the Memorial Building of Field Marshall Sarit Thanarat, a collection of his biography, past works, clothes and personal belongings. In an enclosed glass cabinet you’ll find a very special automatic weapon. This was used by H.M. the King of Thailand during his own army training. It’s proudly displayed and showing the royal insignia with photos of the King in action. Major General Nopadon Yimthanom is the epitome of a career soldier. He has been at the Camp for 24 years, rising to the rank of Commander about a year ago. Under his influence, the Camp was been making strides towards greater involvement in the community. His soldiers have been

active during any crisis (for example flood management and recue) apart from involvement in border security, the seizure of illegal weaponry, environmental protection and the issue of illegal land encroachment. His personal ‘non soldier time’ includes boating (he has a boat at the nearby Pranburi Marina) and cycling. The base has a 150 strong club of cycling enthusiasts. Talking about cycling raises his concerns about road safety. The need for the enforcement of the road rules is a subject where he has strong opinions. Fort Thanarat is a real army base. Not a tourist resort but well worth a day visit. You can move around unimpeded (well almost), check out the ‘army town’ and facilities but don’t expect to check in overnight or have access to restaurants and resorts, just the resident 711! Our thanks to Khun Ram for his personal time and welcome. He promises to invite us to the next happening at the base of interest to readers; it’s an important part of our community.

28 Lizzy’s Corner Hellöööchen liebe Leser Hellöööchen liebe Leser Mein letzter Artikel hat wieder für „Wirbelchen“ gesorgt. Hast Du schon mal für positive Wirbel gesorgt ? Echt cool, Du.

HUA HIN TODAY, November 2014

Du in Pension ? AMEN

A life-long dream of many motorsports fans in Thailand has come true with Chang International Circuit (CIC), the first world-class racing track in the Kingdom, making its debut with the Japanese Super GT and wowed racing enthusiasts around the world. Japanese Super GT cars roar past the grandstand at the Chang International Circuit at the weekend.

Features: The new Eco function expertly saves gas by automatically switching off the engine when stationary— but that’s becoming increasingly common. The top gizmo on this Benz is the “attention assist” program, which recognizes signs that you’re about to fall asleep by analyzing your steering and speed. If the GLA200 thinks you need to take a nap, it’ll tell you to pull over. Specs: 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine, 7-speed automatic transmission, emission class: Euro6, fuel consumption: 4.3/100km Price: B2,440,000

Features: The “SYNC” system connects your phone with the car via Bluetooth. It can read you your text messages or even call people up for you, just like Apple’s Siri. Other geeky touches include the rain-sensing wipers and rear parking sensors—pretty nice touches at this price point. Specs: 1.0-liter GTDi EcoBoost 3-cylinder engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, emission class: Euro4, fuel consumption: 5.3/100km Price: B749,000 (sedan), B754,000 (hatchback)

A huge turnout defied the baking heat and humidity to witness a victory for Kazuki Nakajima and James Rossiter of Petronas Tom’s RCF in the GT500. Kazuki Hoshino and Spain’s Lucas Ordonez of Japanese NDDP Racing team took the GT300 honours. The Thai-owned i-Mobile AAS team, helmed by Thai racer Vuttikorn Inthraphuvasak and Swiss driver Alexandre Imperatori, claimed the GT300 pole position but had to settle for seventh in the final race on Sunday after suffering an engine malfunction. Behind the success of the CIC’s debut was Tipco Asphalt, which was entrusted to lay the FIA Grade 1 racetrack. But the firm said the job was not easy. Kasidis Chareancholwanich, Director of the project, said the FIA Grade 1 track required a special ultra-smooth surface able to withstand the impact of high-performance cars while retaining grip to ensure safety at very high speeds. This was the first time a Thai company had ever made an international racetrack, said Kasidis, adding that working with renowned race circuit designer Hermann Tilke was very challenging. The success of CIC could be gauged by the presence of 130,000 spectators during the event. Newin Chidchob, chairman of the CIC’s advisory committee, said the circuit is of world class and passed the test conducted by the Japanese Super GT organisers. He also declared that the circuit would be expanded to accommodate 100,000 spectators within a year. With the better-than-expected response from motorsport fans and tourists, Newin’s dream of turning Buriram province into a sporting hub is coming into fruition.

Features: The “i-Activ sense” (proactive safety system) uses the cameras and even radars on the car to monitor what’s going on around you. For example, if you’ve got someone in your blind spot, a little light turns on in your rearview mirror to tell you there’s something there. Specs: 2.0-liter petrol engine, 6 speed-automatic transmission, Emission class: Euro6, Fuel Consumption: 5.7/100km Price: B833,000-974,000 (sedan) and B388,000-1,094,000 (hatchback)

Features: On top of the automatic rain-sensing wipers, we’re digging the 7-inch touchscreen monitor with navigation and reverse parking camera. Specs: 1.5-litre four-cylinder 16-valve engine, 120 horsepower, 5-speed automatic transmission, emission class: Euro 4, Fuel Consumption: 5.9/100km Price: B597,000-739,000

Go Ahead For Thailand’s Eco Car Hub Plans The Board of Investment (BoI) has approved investment applications worth nearly 90 billion baht, mainly for companies making environmentally friendly cars.

plans to expand production capacity granted in the first phase of the eco-car scheme to 220,000 vehicles from a planned 180,000, requiring investment of 7.7 billion baht.

Secretary-general Udom Wongviwatchai said the BoI approved investment applications worth 89.7 billion baht at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha. The investment is mainly for 18 large projects, with six worth a combined 52.7 billion baht slated for the second phase of the eco-car scheme.

Thailand launched the first phase of the scheme in 2007, attracting investment of 28.8 billion baht from Mitsubishi, Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Suzuki.

Ford Thailand will spend 18.2 billion baht to make environmentally friendly cars, with annual production capacity of 180,000 vehicles and 2,000 engines. Its US peer General Motors will invest 13.1 billion baht to make 158,000 vehicles annually.

Features: It’s among the most powerful hybrid sports cars out there, meaning it’s got an electric motor but can run on gas for longer distances—and it can outrun a Porsche. But our favorite bit has got to be the key fob. It looks almost like a smartwatch, thanks to its screen which tells you how much range you’ve got left in the car, and other useful info. Oh and that’s how you open the electrically powered scissor doors, too. HUA HIN TODAY, November 2014

The CIC will also host several major races during the remainder of the year, including the Asian Le Mans Series 2014, Touring Car Series in Asia and the Asia Road Racing motorcycle event. Local races lined up for the circuit include the Thailand Super Series, Pro Racing Series Thailand Championship, Truevisions Bobby Hunter Super One Race, Honda One Make Race and Toyota Motorsport Festival.

Nissan Motor will invest 6.86 billion baht to produce 123,000 eco-cars and 2 million auto parts a year. Toyota Motor Corporation will invest 1.9 billion baht to make 160,000 vehicles a year. Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) will invest 4.9 billion baht to make 233,000 eco-cars a year. Mitsubishi also asked for the BoI’s approval for its

Ten car makers including the five existing eco-car manufacturers officially applied in April for the second phase of the eco-car scheme, with total expected investment of 139 billion baht. The 10 projects are set to produce 1.58 million eco-cars, with investment about 110 billion baht greater than the combined outlay from the five manufacturers in the first phase. The existing five manufacturers are prepared to invest 86.8 billion baht for the production of 753,000 eco-cars, while the five newcomers are prepared to spend 52 billion to roll out 828,000 vehicles, the BoI said earlier. Deputy Prime Minister MR Pridiyathorn Devakula said the latest BoI approval meant Thailand could become an eco-car hub. “Although Indonesia is revving up its ecocar production, we expect its production scale is not yet large enough to compete with Thailand’s production,” he said.

The Space Café zone will provide the opportunity for visitors to experience space atmosphere and special space cuisine; such as, Neil Armstrong’s lunch menu or Charles Duke’s dinner meal.

Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin Practices Emergency Hospitalising Plan those who cannot help themselves and the green for those with minor symptoms who can help themselves but are still expecting a doctor’s diagnosis. Results showed that both all hospital staff, including nurses and doctors are ready to work actively at any time. Despite the satisfactory results, the problem of traffic congestion on Phetchakasem Road, especially during weekends, slows down patient transfers. Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin recently practiced procedures to assess and evaluate the performance of its nurses and doctors in an emergency situation. The Manager of the hospital, Mrs Sasiphen Piyasuth chaired and monitored the emergency hospitalising plan which simulated a tour bus of foreign visitors crashing with a pick-up truck in Khao Tao. The accident resulted in 20 people severely injured from burns, cuts and broken limbs. The hospital’s staff who rushed to the scene had to swiftly send all the patients to the hospital. Those with serious injury were immediately sent to the emergency operation room and I.C.U. while those with minor injury were directed to the X-Ray room and a first-aid centre. The emergency hospitalising plan follows those practiced in other countries. The hospital provided three colored zones for different types of patients. The red zone is reserved only for patients requiring immediate treatment; the yellow zone for

Ms. Sasiphen added that the Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin has international standard plans with the emergency hospitalisation plan now included. The hospital is now providing emergency doctors, surgeons, orthopedic specialists, operational and general doctors for Thai and foreign patients around the clock. V.I.P. patients in need of further medical treatment can be transferred via a helicopter at the Hua Hin International Airport to the Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok. In case of natural disasters, the hospital can coordinate with other local public hospitals to provide more medical treatment on request. Finally, the hospital is now providing medical services to public officers under the social welfare scheme. The hospital will give a discount for expenses for low income patients.

Battle of the beards at British Beard and Moustache Championships (England)

Two amorous donkeys which were separated because of an outcry over their lovemaking have been reunited at a zoo in Poland.

More than 200 men from around England have gathered to take part in the British Beard and Moustache Championships. Held in the town of Bath, participants competed for bragging rights and the pride of having the UK’s finest facial hair.

The two amorous donkeys were separated because of an outcry over their lovemaking but have been reunited at a zoo in Poland. The couple, together for 10 years, got into trouble when mothers expressed outrage that children had to witness their mating. Local conservative official Lydia Dudziak took up their cause and persuaded the director of the zoo in Poznan to have the animals put in separate pens. But the zoo acknowledged making a mistake and said the donkeys are now again in one pen.

Northern hemisphere or Southern, the toilets drain the same (Worldwide) The idea that water rotates differently in the different hemispheres is a long-standing one. The Earth is subject to Coriolis forces, which determine how moving objects are deflected off the inside of rotating objects—wheels, circular containers, those kinds of things. Applied to Earth’s rotating sphere, the Coriolis effect accounts in part for why, say, hurricanes and cyclones rotate the way they do. (The storms rotate counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern.) Here’s the catch, though. Coriolis forces are best observed at a large scale; toilet water, in so many ways, is small-scale. In your tub, such factors as any small asymmetry of the shape of the drain will determine which direction the circulation occurs. Even in a tub having a perfectly symmetric drain, the circulation direction

Participants came from around the world - including Australia and the United States - dressed in fantastic outfits to parade on stage in front of a cheering crowd. The judges scored the bearded beauties on a number of technicalities including length and eccentricity. Judge Lea Turner said a winning beard has to have a bit of bounce. “Something to grab onto. It’s got to be bouncy you know. It’s got to bounce back when you grab it,” she said.

Tallest dog in the world dies (USA) Zeus has died, owner Kevin Doorlag told the Kalamazoo Gazette, a local daily in the midwestern US state of Michigan. He would have celebrated his sixth birthday in November. In 2012, when Zeus entered the records book, Doorlag said his massive canine often sparked astonishment when he took him on walks. “The most common thing people ask is: ‘Is that a dog or a horse?’” he recounted, according to NBC news.

will be primarily influenced by any residual currents in the bathtub left over from the time when it was filled. It can take more than a day for such residual currents to subside completely. If all extraneous influences (including air currents) can be reduced below a certain level, one apparently can observe that drains do consistently drain in different directions in the two hemispheres.

Categories for moustaches include Natural, English, Handlebar and Freestyle. In the beard division, there were prizes in the categories of Natural Full, Natural Full with Styled Moustache and Freestyle. Those with a little less facial hair could compete in the Natural Goatee, Musketeer, Freestyle and Sideburns categories.

‘I’m not sorry’: Reporter quits on live TV over cannabis issue (Alaska) Charlo Greene announced her departure on Alaska’s KTVA 11 News, while revealing that she was the owner of a marijuana business she had just been reporting on.

“Now everything you’ve heard is why I, the actual owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club, will be dedicating all of my energy toward fighting for freedom and fairness, which begins with legalising marijuana here in Alaska,” she said, ending her piece to camera. “And as for this job, well, not that I have a choice but, f-ck it, I quit,” she added, before walking off set.

Pandas faking ‘hysterical pregnancies’ to get special treatment (China)

While presenting a live news piece on the Alaska Cannabis Club, Green announced her plans to quit the station to focus on her quest to legalise marijuana in the state.

Experts believe some female pandas have figured out how to game the system and are faking hysterical pregnancies to obtain special treatment such as air conditioned rooms and extra rations.

Beer pipeline to carry booze under Bruges (Belgium)

Hopes that tiny panda paws would be seen in the world’s first live-broadcast cub delivery were dashed when Chinese experts suggested the “mother” was likely to have been focusing more on extra bun rations than giving birth. The slated star of the show, giant panda Ai Hin, had last month shown signs of pregnancy at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre, according to state news agency Xinhua. A live broadcast of the event was planned, but things got awkward for organisers after her “behaviours and physiological

indexes returned to normal”, according to Xinhua citing experts saying she experienced a “phantom pregnancy”. The breeding centre, in China’s southwestern province of Sichuan, commonly moves pandas which are thought to be pregnant into single rooms with air conditioning and around-the-clock care. “They also receive more buns, fruits and bamboo, so some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life,” Wu Kongju, an expert at the base told Xinhua. Phantom pregnancy is said to be common among the endangered animals, and many bears continue to display pregnant behaviour after noticing the difference in treatment they receive, Xinhua said.

SpongeBob SquarePants is a violent bully (Kazakhstan) TV cartoon favourite SpongeBob SquarePants is a violent bully who corrupts children’s minds, officials in Kazakhstan have ruled. Its education ministry viewed several episodes and is now telling parents not to let their children watch the surreal

animated show. They say the cartoon character creates a culture of hooliganism, violence and bullying. Zabira Orazalieva, chairman of the Committee for the Protection of Children’s Rights, said the cartoon character “has a negative impact of the minds of children”. She said: We witnessed how SpongeBob regularly inflicts violence on others in his community and seems to enjoy what he does. This has a detrimental effect on children. “This shocking behaviour remains in the child’s mind and influences how they behave themselves.” The grim-faced officials from the ministry stopped short of banning foreign TV channels which broadcasts SpongeBob as the cartoon is also shown on YouTube and other social media sites.

A pipeline to transfer beer from a five century old brewery in Belgium to a nearby bottling factory will take 85 per cent of Bruge’s trucks off the roads. Tired of delivery trucks rumbling near its mythic canals, Belgium’s medieval town of Bruges has approved the construction of a beer pipeline to link a five-century-old brewery to a bottling factory nearby. The three-kilometre (two-mile) underground pipeline will link the De Halve Maan brewery in the heart of the “Venice of the North” to an industrial park where the beer will be bottled and shipped to

thirsty drinkers worldwide, the company’s director Xavier Vanneste told AFP. “The idea is born of environmental and quality of life concerns, and not economic ones.” Once fully approved and constructed, the pipeline will keep 500 trucks out of the city’s cobblestoned alleys every year, about 85 percent of the town’s lorry traffic. Beer has been brewed on the site for nearly five centuries and 100,000 tourists visit the premises every year, a major stop on tours of the town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

500 Batmen descend on Calgary (Canada) The Dark Knight had risen (again) in the name of charity. More than 500 employees dressed head-to-foot as Batman gathered outside the headquarters of Nexen, an oil and gas company, in order to raise money for charity and break a world record in the process. The full 542 participants had their costumes inspected by a Guinness Book of World Records staffer who, after ensuring they all stood together for five minutes, pronounced the group the official world record holders of the title: “Largest Gathering of People Dressed As Batman”. The gathering of 542 Batmen (and women) kicked off a campaign for a United Way charity The previous record was a paltry 250. Organiser Dave Kelly said to Canada’s Metro News: “We blew apart the old record”.

The surreal scene, organised by charity United Way, which empowers individuals and families to achieve their potential through education, income stability and health, was part of the charity’s superherothemed 2014 fund-raising campaign. As Batman himself would say: “It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”

36 Spa & Health Black Mountain Spa Rejuvenation After a Stressful Day I arrived at the Black Mountain Spa feeling stressed, hot and bothered. After allowing plenty of time to make the appointment, a flat tyre en route and changing the wheel by the side of the highway was not a pleasant experience. Instead of being ready to relax and enjoy the 90 minute Black Mountain Signature Treatment, I was in a rush and just like my tyre, rather deflated!

My host the Spa Manager Khun Janyarak Fernando, better known as Khun Tak, quickly began the de-stressing process with an understanding warm smile and a cooling drink of tea. She’s been at the Spa for some four years and is eager to slow things down and answer any questions in a confident, self-assured manner. She’ll also ask you to complete a checklist of your requirements and is ready to address any personal or health issues needing to be considered. Next my therapist, Khun Tai introduced herself and led me to the massage room. There are purpose designed rooms for each style of treatment including expansive bathing areas for therapy of the ‘wet’ variety. By now you are dressed in the spa gown and slippers and all you have to do is what you are told; that’s not much. You’ll also be offered the gentle concerns of the therapist that all is well, not interrupting your rest, just providing extra reassurance. The first half of my treatment included a pampering body scrub (brown sugar), with a combination of warm oils (almond and citrus) and soothing strokes. After a quick warm shower I noticed my slightly pink and glowing skin. Revival was on the way! Then some more oiling massage strokes and gentle stretching followed by attention to any tension in your scalp; the final winner! The Black Mountain Spa is typically visited by nearby residents and Golf Club Members, apart from casual golfers. The décor is in keeping with the black and gold

motifs of this world class facility and leaves nothing to chance or disappointment. If someone in my state of tension on arrival can be successfully ‘de-stressed’, I’d bet that anyone’s physical and mental state can be revived. If the treatment follows a game of golf, you can either bathe in the glory of being a winner or memories of those horror holes will just fade away. Either way it’s a spa experience that well and truly lives up to its promise. P.S. While you are at Black Mountain, check out the newly refurbished and expanded pro shop with all the golfing equipment and fashion you’ll ever need. Black Mountain Signature Treatment: 90 minutes; 1,200 THB., Open: Everyday 9 AM to 7 PM., Where: Upper level of the Black Mountain Golf Course Club House. Appointments: Phone - 032 618 666 7 (or book with your tee time)

However perhaps this was an accidental simulation of walking 18 holes and playing a bad round of golf? The question was - could the purpose of the massage therapy be achieved in these circumstances? Revival and relaxation of the body and mind as well as invigorating and easing muscle tension is the aim. I certainly needed that!

Trace Minerals 1

In this article the story of about vitamins and minerals is continued. Here is some information about trace mineral or the minerals which our body requires less than 100 mg per day. There are 11 types of trace minerals which are Iron, Zinc, Selenium, Manganese, Copper, Iodine, Chromium, Cobalt, Fluoride, Molybdenum, and Vanadium. IRON plays an important role in the production of Hemoglobin, Myoglobin and certain enzymes. Iron can be found in red meat, liver, clams, oysters, egg yolks, whole grains, molasses, asparagus, bracken fern, etc. Lack of Iron may cause Anaemia, slow growth in children, debility and dull skin. ZINC is a mineral which controls the body to function to work more efficiently, also helping repair and maintain the enzyme system along with other cells. Zinc can be found in seafood, lamb, calf’s liver, eggs, nonfat milk powder, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds, grain, cocoa powder etc. Lack of Zinc may cause Prostatic Hyperplasia, lack of development of the reproductive organs, and Arteriosclerosis SELENIUM is an anti-oxidant. It helps prevent and slow down aging. Selenium can be found in seafood, liver, wheat germ, rice bran, onions, garlic, tomatoes, broccoli, brown rice etc. Lack of Selenium may cause you Keshan disease, this is a disease with symptoms of fatigue due to myocardial dysfunction. MANGANESE is vital to bone structure, digestive process,

HUA HIN TODAY, November 2014

reproductive and the nervous systemas well as the production of Thyroxin, which is a main hormone produced by thyroid gland. Manganese can be found in eggs, liver, meat, seafood, milk, butter, grains, beet root, banana blossom, fruit, green vegetables etc. Lack of Manganese may cause you Ataxia, dizziness and also affects shortterm memory. COPPER helps transform Iron into Hemoglobin. It is also an important factor in applying vitamin C for use. Copper can be found in peas, dried beans, whole wheat, prunes, offal, seafood etc. Lack of Copper may cause you Edema, Anemia, bone disease, and rheumatoid handlers. IODINE plays a vital role in the function of thyroid gland which helps control the metabolism in our body. Iodine can be found in brown seaweed, all kind of seafood, onions etc. Lack of Iodine may cause you Goiter and hypo activity of the thyroid (Hypo-thyroid). Each type of trace mineral has its own important role whether as an adjuvant between minerals or as an adjuvant with vitamins and other nutrients. Trace minerals are important to our body, but only in small quantities.
