Introduction The Spark Arts for Children have really enjoyed working with Overdale Junior School and it is our great pleasure to present to you our My City publication. This is a collection of some of the poems that have been created by very talented children in your school. The children, who worked with Joseph Coelho, have explored the parks and playgrounds of Leicester, labeled trees with post-it note similes, found poems for the statues dotted around the city and discovered poems beating in their hearts. We have seen some fantastic, confident performances and read some creatively genius poems, all inspired by the children’s own experiences and all with Leicester at their heart. We hope you enjoy reading this collection of work. Why not write your own poem too‌.?

Spinning round in resurrection Spinning round in resurrection as the angels fly. All is quiet you hear the moans of those who have lost people and the screams of those who are dying. Jaskaran Khabra

River of baked beans and old milk A river of baked beans and old milk A bowl of banana peels and mustard from the bin, Yuk! A wedge of spam and wet mud. A chunk of cat food and liver. Gruesome A lump of rocks A cup of moss and a jug of brussel sprouts Shh! It’s a secret! Fares Abdulla

King Richard III Battle as rough as a hurricane We must win… Screams go through me like an arrow. We must win… Sadness fills me as I watch men die. We must win… Die, Death, Disgust Many people died this day We are so close to being champions. Ghosts haunt me in my sleep Who will find my mortal remains Maybe people will remember me as being good and not bad. Maybe I will be a role model for other Kings Today I will win People will worship me My name in history for being the best. We Lost. Grace Hill

If all of Leicester poem If all of Leicester was made out of sweets. All of the Botanic gardens would be lollipops. The train station would be made out of Haribos, so if you fall over you won't get hurt, and the grass people walk on would be Sherberts. Jelly beans would be people’s kidneys and melted chocolate would be Aylestone swimming pool. Leicester City football stadium and rugby stadium would be made out of mints for the benches marshmallows and the pitch would be half chocolate and half fudge + toffee. And all animal poo is bubble gum, Taranjot Bhoot

Amazon Poem Monkeys climbing the trees so they can get their yummy bananas. Yellow flowers as pretty as can be, gently swaying in the air Lizards roaming the Amazon rainforest to find delicious food. Amazon animals are fun and pretty. All through the night there’s so much noise made by the animals. Night time is the best, all the animals come out to play. Dangerous animals are jaguars and tarantulas because they bite you, A big jaguar is sleeping peacefully with their cubs. Magical flowers floating in the air Rivers are floating like the air, nice and beautiful. It is beautiful in the Amazon blue skies. The sky is pretty, as blue as OJs Jumpers. Myla Simon

Richard, Richard, Richard Richard got scared by air He got no flair He got some long hair When he sat next to some bear He got no flair. He dressed so bare He only got a skeleton under there. Richard is so greedy, he’s such a foody, He eats with the pigs and cows. He got so fat he couldn’t get up the stairs He got a big fat belly, he don’t like to share. He hates it when John never shares, Richard got barred from the pub Richard got scarred for life. Amrit Johal

If all of Leicester were sugar If all of Leicester were sugar. Then Aylestone swimming pool would be made of melted chocolate and all the little children would lap it all up and get so fat they explode little fudge bits everywhere, even all over Overdale School. All the children who were learning would scream and Overdale would collapse on them. After that they would waddle to their homes on Filbert Street, which is made of gummy worms. Filbert Street has King Power Stadium, which is made out of orange toffee. Their houses would be jelly beans and their toys would be gummy bears. To build the houses they would use gummy bears paste. On Sundays the fudge children would visit King Richard III and his grave in the caramel cathedral. The caramel cathedral has a stream as clear as lemonade. King Richard’s grave is made of gummy eggs and if you are good King Richard, who is made of liquorice since he is rotting, would sing and dance the Haribo’s advert the BIG BIG sandwich one. Eleanor Hartshorne 12

Ninjas Ninja creep around in the dark. Imps and demons will fall to the ninja. Ninja jump far away. Jump from root to root. A ninja kills to protect. Theo Morgan

Joe He’s always going with the flow He’s even got his own Lambo, and overtime he’s cruising in his Lambo, he’s going past Tesco, and Nandos, but wait he stopped at Nandos, and who did he see? Cristiano Ronaldo, so that’s all of his day, at least I could tell you anyway. Kailan Jethva & Ahmed Ali

Thomas Cook At first Thomas Cook made a tent for camping outdoors it’s how he made hotels to pay and stay. Thomas Cook arrives on planes to different countries. Thomas Cook was a popular guy in airports. Finlay Tully

NINJA Ninja, fight for what is right!

Imps and demons you’ll have limps!

Nasty cuts: chop! chop! chop! Jumping roof to roof!

Against evil they fight! Hi-ya! John Bennett

The Haunted Forest In the haunted forest the ghost haunts the trees. In the haunted forest the vampires suck the breeze. In the haunted forest you don’t have to pay the freeze. In the haunted forest you’ll get injured by the leaves. In the haunted forest there is no room with light. If you go there, you will die with fright. In the haunted forest it is not that bright, that if you slip, you’ll get sucked in by night. The witches stalk the forest! Hell..H..HELP! Tilly Millard

Fire and Diamonds When the sparklers crackle and the fireworks pop. They make awesome colours but then the colours will drop. The sun is orange but it glows bright red, it seems like its got a brain like a normal humans head The fire turns red to orange to yellow, but then it burns to the ground and spells out hello. When the rockets shoot in the air they sparkle like diamonds everywhere. DIAMONDS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Diamonds, Diamonds there in the air, you can possibly wear them in your hair. Diamonds, Diamonds there in your room, you can try and use them as your broom. Diamonds, diamonds there in your school, but please don’t take them in your pool. Diamonds, diamonds, there in your box you might even find them in your rocks.

World War 2 My Great grandfather was in World War 2 you see. Where they used to clean their boots with wee. With guns, knives and caps they’d say “charge” and then “surrender”. I thought of a beat I thought of a beat, whilst eating wheat. I thought of a light, whilst looking right. I sat in a car and drove to the bar. Sitting in a B-E-N-T-L-E-Y. Hitting the horn, whilst breaking my phone. And then my phone, make a noisy tone. Kavir Mackan & Areeb Ahmad

My house is the best The red post box is as red as fire. The shops are as tall as tall as skyscrapers. A Maserati as fast as lightning. An Aston Martin as speedy as a Lamborghini. The gates as shiny as the moon. And my house helps me. Amrit Singh Virk

I am a Needle My job is to sew two pieces of wool, polyester or cotton together that have long shredded or parted teared or ripped! I end up in all sorts of destinations including workhouses, washrooms and tumble dryers. It is hard being tossed around and eventually being used till I drop but there is one thing that sickens me is that when I get stepped on or someone pricks their finger on me they let out a piercing scream and blood streams out of a scar next week they will have a permanent scab and they bin me. Bethan Easton

Lillys are falling to little pieces. And the two girls lived happily ever after. Ella Cartwright
