The Health Science Education and Research Commons in the Edmonton Clinic North


The Health Science Education and Research Commons . . . will prepare the next generation of health workforce to use evolving technologies in team-based care. HSERC creates, implements and provides evidence for learning and communication technologies to support successful health outcomes for Canadians. The University of Alberta (UA) health science faculties (eight) and their external partners (Alberta Health Services (AHS) and advanced education sectors) support HSERC projects which respond to patient demands for better care. HSERC’s demonstration space was established in May 2008. By 2016: • students from 43 health programs at the UA (7,485 in 2009-10) will be team and technology competent • learning and research partnerships (currently 13 of 19 faculties, three post secondary institutions and AHS) will include all UA faculties and pan-Alberta advanced education sectors • researchers engaged will quadruple to almost 200 • 15 clinicians will annually graduate proficient in health science learning best practices from the newly created Masters in Education Health Sciences program The HSERC space was designed taking into consideration the needs of health educators, students, and IT experts. The U of A’s Vice-Provost

(Information Technology) was an active partner participant in the global environmental scan process. Drs Eleni Stroulia and Pierre Boulanger from Computing Science have also been actively engaged in the design process, as well as Rob Lederer from Industrial Design and Drs Mike Carbonaro and Patricia Bechler from the Faculty of Education. In all, eight health science faculties, arts, education and computing science are contributing members to the design of the HSERC space.

Exam Procedure Rooms

Size:

Designed to simulate a clinician's examination room. Students can simulate meeting with a patient to develop and enhance "bed side manner" skills. The rooms provide opportunities for single discipline or team-based care and provide the University with a suitable environment for OSCE examinations.

24 Rooms: all rooms are 12nsm. 6 connected exam procedure rooms are 24nsm when connected.

Special Features: 3 rooms that are expandable for larger team scenarios Can be secured for OSCEs. Monitor and proctor rooms with capacity for monitoring recording, annotation and secure image storage. Monitor/Proctor system is web based facilitating offsite live streaming and delayed playback.

These rooms will also simulate a safe space in which students can experiment with transforming care delivery by communicating in a patient-centred, transparent and collaborative manner (charting and discussing patient care with the patient in the room, instead of away from the patient - as is the current practice).

Equipment:

Examination table, hand washing station, Integrated Diagnostic System, simulated oxygen and VAC. Additional equipment is available such as hospital beds, medical and rehabilitation equipment, office furniture

The space is highly flexible and not restricted to clinical exams. Reconfigurable for community consultation simulations, leadership training for developing negotiating and diplomatic skills, cultural competency training and development of capacity to be empathetic.

Each room is equipped with PC in the room. A computing station has also been configured outside of each room.

The Proctor Room functions as Master Control Center allowing users to view all testing and assessment / recording activity in the center via a single interface. The Control Center application is also used for configuring the center for examinations and automated recording. Digital recording may be triggered automatically by student log in or manually by a proctor.

Special Features: Digital management and operations of the clinical skills center enabling faculty/instructors to create, administer, record and score clinical skills encounters with standardized patients and simulators. Offers a paperless exam flow allowing students/participants access to case instructions, lab results, physical exam findings, etc., as well as complete post-encounter notes online. Window between Proctor & Monitor areas. Located in secured area.

The Monitor Room application allows any of the 12 computers in this area to become powerful and flexible monitoring stations. Users may toggle between video feeds from multiple rooms, control the pan/tilt/zoom of any camera in the center, make audio announcements, and fill out monitor checklists from a single screen. Monitor/Proctor system is web based facilitating off-site live streaming and delayed playback.

Standardized Patient Lounge and Training Room

Size:

This space will function as the hub for Standardized Patient activities, ranging from training, debriefing and preparation for activities occurring throughout the centre. The space provides a makeup moulage prep area, dressing rooms, showers, lockers and private entry with sign in kiosk for the standardized patients. There is also a private entrance from the lounge area into the exam procedure area allowing the SPs to access the area without being seen by the students/participants.

Universal Patient Room and Ante Room

The Universal Patient room can be used simulate traditional hospital room/ ward or an isolation chamber.

universal patient room = 35nsm as one room; approx 15nsm of usable space when divided into 2 rooms; anteroom = 4nsm

Special Features: Retractable wall allows room to be divided into 2 rooms or opened up for a larger space that can accommodate up to 2 beds. When divided into 2 rooms each room has a separate external control room with a one way observation window. There are also 2 external nursing stations with windows into the room for purposes of observation and charting in critical care simulations. Each room has E-charting capabilities, and Operational gasses on fixed headwalls. The room is also equipped for high fidelity manniquens. Anteroom is attached. Equipment:

Standard acute care equipment such as hospital beds, IV poles, infusion pumps, integrated diagnostic sets, wheel chairs, stretchers, portable lifts etc. available to support this room

The ante room helps to train students on infection control curriculum, for accessing patients who require isolation. This room can be used with high fidelity manniquens and standardized/simulated patients


Critical Care Room

Designed for flexibility to provide opportunities to simulate an ICU, NICU, hospital emergency, labour/delivery room, and procedure room.

Specialized Care Suite

Caters to patients with chronic conditions and special needs including, but not limited to, bariatric care, neurological conditions, and people with reduced functional mobility.

For bariatric simulations this room provides opportunities for student teams to work with bariatric (morbidly obese) patients in a room designed to accommodate this population. The inclusion of an overhead patient lift, the only lift designated for learning purposes on campus, allows students the opportunity to practice lifting a patient in a safe environment rather than attempting this skill for the first time in a clinical setting. A three piece bariatric washroom continues the learning experience. Can be used with high fidelity manniquens and standardized/simulated patients. External Control room with observation window can be used as translation booth for Smart Meeting Room.


Community Space Lab (Smart Condo)

Size:

The condo will be used to simulate home visits for students to increase their understanding of living in a home environment and using assisted living devices (i.e.: wheelchairs, walkers) and for students to practice working respectfully within their patient's private and personal space. The integration of intelligent technology also provides opportunities for students to learn how to communicate and collaborate with "patients" living in intelligent homes.

Special Features: This one bedroom condo features moveable walls, removable floors for the installation of wireless sensor technology for remote monitoring. The space includes a bathroom with its own entrance/exit to allow for more then one simulation activity to occur in the smart condo space at a time. External control room without observation window (to reduce observer effect). Control room has separate feeds into the bathroom and the suite to support simultaneous simulations. Fully functional kitchen and laundry area. Kitchen designed for use by and disabled and non-disabled. Equipment: AV/IT:

Fully equipped as a one bedroom apartment/condo. Specialized rehabilitation equipment is available for use in this space for example

The condo provides student research opportunities to examine the use of applied universal design principals to design for an aging population. Students apply their knowledge of occupational performance, functional design and human factors (physical, cognitive and sensor) to design with a focus on wellness. The integration of intelligent technology, such as wireless sensors for remote monitoring can improve the quality of life of chronically ill patients and reduce hospital stays. This technology will be used to monitor health related events and transmit this to an online virtual environment. Condo will support the development of technology for remote monitoring and health care in rural Canada. In addition to home care/palliative care simulation, condo can be used as a focus group room for the study of parent child interactions, ageing in place observation, microbiology safe food handling.


Multi-Purpose Labs/Black Box Theatre

These two Team-Based Training laboratories replicate a theatre offering flexibility to simulate any large scale care environment (e.g.: crash scene, hospital ward during a disease pandemic). The laboratories can be divided to create four smaller spaces allowing for small groups of activities running concurrently (e.g.: bootcamps for specialities such as surgery, emergency, critical care; student health care team challenges).

The theatre type equipment provides realistic sounds and smells to simulate experiences that cannot be simulated in any other way. In fact, the entire HSERC space can be used to simulate all aspects of a major disaster from the disaster scene to pre-hospital, transport to hospital, triage, and hospital care. The black box theatre equipment can simulate day or night conditions, weather conditions, the ambulance experience or a noisy, busy ER.


Simulation Lab (Cave)

This space features a three-sided cave allowing for three dimensional digitization of seamless immersion into a virtual world.

The space is designed to actively engage learners in immersive collaborative simulations. Two types of technology allow for immersive collaboration that is not possible through any other means. CAVE technology, uses multi-user virtual environments in which participants interact with digital objects and tools that support collaborative work. Haptic devices provide force feedback so participants learn the amount of force to apply when using the tools on the digital objects (e.g.: a scalpel during surgery). The participants share and navigate through computer generated 3D graphical space. Current use includes surgical procedural training. Immersive projection technology is increasingly used for distributed collaboration (collaborating across distances) with highly immersive and surrounding displays. Current specialized applications include, molecular visualization and architectural walk-throughs, however the increasing need for co-visualization of complex data and large-scale models will result in an increasing use of this type of technology

for teaching and learning in specialized medical fields in the next several years. This space encourages talented people to think beyond their disciplines. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other space dedicated to health education and collaboration like this in Canada. Special Features: Comprehensive system records multiple feeds digitally, handles annotation and debriefing, integrates with multiple types of simulators and builds searchable participant portfolios automatically. Also manages users, provides tools for scenario and checklist creation and generates multiple types of usage, session and aggregate reports, all from a 100% web-based interface. Able to centralize data from multiple simulation activities and unify remote and portable simulation sites within a single web-based portal, creating opportunities for research. Equipment: AV/IT:
