HR HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS: HR SOUTH METRO FIRE RESCUE PUTS OUT MORE THAN FIRES Highlands Ranch’s early residents had no fire and rescue services. “Before 1986, Highlands Ranch was not located within a fire district,” said Eric Hurst, Public Information Officer, South Metro Fire Rescue. “If fires were large, residents’ property would be lost before neighboring fire districts could arrive.” The closest fire departments were in Littleton and Louviers. “In 1986, the first fire and rescue vehicle with a 300-gallon water tank was purchased for Highlands Ranch,” he said. It was staffed with two firefighters, including a paramedic, who mostly responded to calls for injured construction workers, grass fires and natural gas leaks. “Highlands Ranch Metro District contracted with Littleton Fire Rescue for services in 1987,” Hurst said. The same year, Highlands Ranch’s first station (#17) opened on University Blvd. near Eastridge Recreation Center. Its new engine carried 750 gallons of water and was staffed with three firefighters. As Highlands Ranch grew, so did the size of its Fire and Rescue department. Opened in October 1994 on Blakeland Drive, “Squirt” 16 was a shared facility with the City of Littleton. The opening of Station 18 on Timbervale Trail followed in July 1998.

Applications can be submitted prior to the Job Fair, or laptops will be available to complete an application at the event. When submitting an application, please enter JOB FAIR for how you heard about the position. Join us to meet department supervisors, and interview for open positions upon application approval.

“The first large-scale wildland fire in Fall 2003 that burned more than 1,000 acres at Cherokee Ranch sounded the alarm for additional training and equipment,” said Hurst. That eventually

Masks are highly encouraged at the Job Fair.

JERRY FLANNERY CEO and General Manager Thanksgiving is right around the corner. I hope everyone takes time this month to reflect on things for which they are thankful. There are plenty of activities this month to kick off the holiday festivities. First are the Backcountry Half Marathon and Adult Health Fair on November 6. Later on are the Holiday Craft Show, Dueling Pianos, and the Nutcracker Highlights. Please check our calendar for more details on these events at www.HRCAonline.org/Events.

Budget: This year’s budget will have a zero-dollar increase. The total assessment will remain the same at $622.88 for the 2022 calendar year. More information about the budget is available online at www.HRCAonline.org/Budget. The HRCA budget development process is approximately three months long and includes internal staff preparation, direction from the CEO and Board of Directors, two half-day meetings with the Finance Committee and input from the Delegates at three budget presentations throughout the preparation process. All meetings are open to the public and members of the community are always encouraged to attend.

COMMUNITY NEWS A word from the DCSO.. auto theft is on the rise In the last year, Highlands Ranch has seen a 13 percent increase in auto thefts and Douglas County a 44 percent increase. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has increased patrols and has specialized units working in areas where we have seen high increases in thefts. However, the Sheriff’s office can’t do it alone. Below are some tips to help you from becoming a victim • Always lock your vehicles (parked in or outside a garage). • Remove all valuable items, and all items in general, from your vehicle (glove boxes included). DCSO has seen a lot of vehicle break-ins (meaning the vehicle was not left unlocked) due to items left in the cab of the vehicle. The less appealing you can make your vehicle the better. • DO NOT leave firearms in your vehicles. • If you have a garage door opener in your vehicle, remove it when the vehicle is parked outside. • Have all important information (i.e. VIN, License Plate, vehicle descriptors) written down just in case your vehicle should be stolen. • If you have a tracking system on your vehicle, keep the subscription up-to-date. • Leave exterior lighting on outside of your residence or have motion sensor lights. • It is highly recommended to get a good home security system, with cameras. This doesn’t necessarily deter crime but could help with a subsequent investigation. • For residents living in apartment complexes, town homes, or condos, go outside on the weekends and periodically check on your vehicle. DCSO has had several reports where a vehicle is parked on Friday and not discovered as stolen until Monday or later. • Report suspicious persons in your neighborhood. In addition, DCSO has four-dozen free steering wheel clubs (locking device for steering wheel) for residents who have recently had a vehicle stolen or who have a vehicle that falls in the top 10 vehicles stolen in Colorado (per the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force). For more information about this program feel free to stop by the Highlands Ranch Substation located at 9250 Zotos Drive.

(story continued from page 1) led to consolidating resources. In January 2019, voters of Highlands Ranch and the City of Littleton approved merging Littleton Fire Rescue with South Metro Fire Rescue. In March 2021, Station 20 opened on E. Wildcat Reserve Parkway across from Mountain Vista High School. This state-of-the-art, 10,000-square-foot, $7.6 million facility improved response times to southern Highlands Ranch. In front of Station 20 is a red hose cart likely one of the first pieces of firefighting equipment purchased for the Town of Littleton in December 1891. As Littleton Independent described, “The men did not have fancy fire trucks, but were obliged to run and drag a heavy two-wheeled cart holding around 750 feet of 2½ inch hose.” This equipment from more than a century ago is a reminder of the fire and rescue profession’s proud history.

WINTER PROPERTY PREP Fall has officially arrived and is the ideal time to prepare your lawn and landscaping for the upcoming winter season. Here are some tips to help you prepare: • Aerate and/or dethatch your lawn • Restore bare spots or re-sod • Apply a winter fertilizer • Prune and remove dead tree branches • Plant trees and shrubs and allow them to become well-established before the winter • Before shutting down the sprinklers, give your lawn a good watering to prevent root damage that can occur over the winter • Disconnect your hoses and blow out your sprinkler system to prevent pipe freezing For more information, call the Master Gardeners at Colorado State University Cooperative Extension of Douglas County at 720-733-6935 or email mgardenr@ douglas.co.us. Fall is also a good time to assess your property to plan and budget for future maintenance. We recommend that you check your home for the following: • Inspect to see if your home will require painting or if there is any exposed wood that needs repair. • Check all roofing and gutters for needed repairs/maintenance. • Check fencing for broken pickets, boards, water damage and general maintenance. A few other friendly neighbor reminders: • Bag fall leaves and put them out for trash, don't blow them into the street as they end up in your neighbor's yards. • Drain your hot tub into your own yard or to the street and not your neighbor's yard.

Put your senses on full alert as you take in the sights and sounds of the night. Little Equestrians, Every Sunday: Little Equestrians is the perfect bridge from pony programs to horseback riding lessons! This 30-minute, private pony-riding lesson firms up the basics of safe—and fun—riding with more attention to details between the rider, instructor, and the pony. GIVE THANKS! Leaves are on the ground, snow is beginning to fall, and you want to find a fun, engaging activity for your little one! Consider our Creative Kids classes at Westridge Rec Center. It is a great time to get involved. For more information, please call 303-471-8818.

This month, we're asking you to Back the Backcountry! We're looking for 100 individual donations— from November 1-14—to grow our community of people who value our local wild place and the lessons it can teach each one of us.
