HR HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS: HR "HOME SWEET HOME" When Philip and Kaye Scott closed on the first house in the new community of Highlands Ranch on Sept. 28, 1981, developer Mission Viejo gave them a bonus–a 650-pound steer! “We had to buy a full-size freezer for all the roasts, steaks and other products from the steer,” laughed Kaye, recalling the unexpected gift. The Scotts, childhood sweethearts from Valentine, Nebraska, were living in Sedalia, Colo., before moving to their new home on Coyote Street in The Groves, a subdivision just south of where the Northridge Recreation Center is today. Mission Viejo’s first homes were priced in the $90,000s. The Scotts’ 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 1663-square-foot home closed for $90,000. Asked about memories from early years in their new home, Kaye said, “Our daughter, Sarah, who was nine months when we moved in, took her first steps. She wasn’t afraid because it had carpet.” Phil worried whenever Kaye got on the roads to and from the airport for her job. “Snowstorms were always a ‘special event’ because at that time, the streets weren’t plowed,” he said. When Philip and Kaye Scott moved to what was then called the New Town of Highlands Ranch nearly 40 years ago, little did they know they’d never leave the beautiful community. They’re now in their third home. Their two children, Sarah and Zach, and their respective families, also live in the “Ranch.” Highlands Ranch is indeed “Home Sweet Home” for the three generations of Scotts! For more historic information visit the Highlands Ranch Historical Society’s web site at www.theHRHS.org.

JERRY FLANNERY CEO and General Manager Happy June everyone! Summer is here and we hope that you will be spending some of your summer months with us either out by the pool, at one of our many special events such as the Backcountry Outdoor Movies, Culture on the Green, Comedy Night, Farmer’s Market; or enrolling in some of our classes and camps.

COVID Update: We continue to follow the guidance set forward by State Officials and masks are no longer required in our facilities. The hand sanitizing stations will remain and we encourage good hygiene. New Delegates: The Annual Meeting of Members was held on April 27. With this election we are welcoming seven new Delegates to the group of 94 total Delegates who represent all the subdivisions across Highlands Ranch at the monthly homeowner meetings. Congratulations to our newly elected Delegates. We greatly appreciate your service to the community. Newly elected Delegates include Samara Lyon-Frick, Jim Matsey, Karla Laurent, Bruce Peotter, Tom Hall, Frank Impinna and Robert Strauss. Please check the web site at www.HRCAonline.org/Delegates to view a current listing of all HRCA Delegates.

4th of July: Many people are starting to think about the 4th of July holiday and celebration this year. Our team has been

working on a plan for a fun day to celebrate our community's 40th anniversary starting at 8:00 a.m. with a 5K run, followed by a community parade at 9:00 a.m., and ending with a fabulous fireworks show at approximately 9:30 p.m., launched from the Highland Heritage Park. The park will be closed to the public due to the large fall out zone. The fireworks show will be able to be seen from further distances, so homeowners can safely gather in your neighborhoods to catch the show. We understand that this is a disappointment for some, but because planning happens six months (or more) in advance of the festivities, there was no way to knowing what restrictions may or may not be in place in July. More complete information on the festivities and how to join us and be a participant can be found at HRCAonline.org/July4.

Mobile Rec Cards: To help improve efficiency and wait times at our recreation centers, we are implementing a new mobile recreation card technology that will allow you to scan your HRCA membership card into your phone. This technology is now in beta testing and available for iPhone and Android users. To download the app, go to www.HRCAonline.org/App. Once you have added your card into your phone, simply

Community Scholarship Fund

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2021 HRCA SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS! Congratulations to the recipients of the Highlands Ranch Community Scholarship Fund for 2021. Once again, the applicant pool demonstrated the exceptional students we have in our community. Thank you, also, to the committee members involved in the selection process.

SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENTS New home improvement projects are in full swing! The Community Improvement Services (CIS) department is working with the Architectural Review Committee to process submittals as quickly as possible. It is important to submit any exterior improvement projects prior to starting, to ensure you do not end up in the noncompliance process. As a property owner in Highlands Ranch, you must receive approval for any improvements outlined in the Residential Improvement Guidelines. The failure to do can lead to having to remove the improvement, or re-do it to meet the Guidelines. While May brought some wet weather early on, the Community Improvement Services staff monitors the drought information from Centennial Water. You may need to reduce the watering of your landscape this summer season, but it is imperative that you continue to maintain the property. This include mowing, weeding, and pruning of trees and shrubs. Areas of bare dirt are not permitted, so please make sure you have mulch or rock in all the areas that are not sod. Hopefully Mother Nature is nice to us the rest of the year and we can keep the lawns looking good! If you have any questions, please visit www.HRCAonline.org or give the CIS Department a call at 303-471-8821.

Girl Scout Gold Award candidate Grace Bielefeldt, a senior at STEM School Highlands Ranch, collaborated with Douglas County artist James Holmes and HRCAA to create a permanent art installation for the recreation center where families were reunited after the shooting. The intent behind these beautiful canvases (titled Metamorphosis) is to help erase the stigma around mental health and to promote awareness about the issue. This art will be on permanent display at Northridge. Learn more about the meaning behind the art at www.HRCAonline.org/Metamorphosis.
