Tired or heavy looking eyes make you look older than you really are. This happens when excess skin and fat build up in the upper eyelids, leading to a heavy look, puffiness, and bags under the eyes. Sagging upper eyelids can also block vision. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is an ideal treatment option for these cosmetic and functional issues.

The procedure involves the removal of excess of skin, muscle and the fat from the eyelids to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes. Ideal candidates for the procedure are those who are healthy and without any life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing.

Types of Blepharoplasty Lower Eyelid Surgery Lower blepharoplasty is done to remove excess skin, improve the shape of the lower eyelid by removing skin and fat, and reduce wrinkles. The procedure involves removal of excess skin, excess muscle, and excess fat, repositioning of the corner of the eye or canthopexy, repositioning of the entire lower eyelid, or lateral tarsal strip eyelid repositioning, and addressing the tear trough, including fat tear trough ablation, and lower eyelid fat sliding procedures.

Upper Eyelid Surgery Along with addressing fullness of the medial and central upper eyelid, upper eyelid surgery also improves corrugator hyperactivity or glabellar frown lines. In addition, browpexy procedures can be performed through the upper blepharoplasty incision to reposition the eyebrow. In addition to the removal of fatty tissue that causes puffiness, excess skin is also removed. The surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Patients are usually advised to use cool packs to help reduce swelling that may develop around the eyes. Pain medication is prescribed along with moisturizing drops to protect the eyes during the healing process. Patients can resume normal activities in about five days’ time.
