. . . that’s what a carload of us did recently when traveling across the new Rocky Broad River bridge linking two North Carolina towns: Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. “Oh, I’ve read about this bridge! We’ve gotta stop,” said one of the friends nestled in the car. And I’m so glad we did. The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is a sight to see – and a pedestrian stop that delights all the senses. A winding path leads the way once you walk under a welcoming archway announcing it as a “Gateway to Somewhere Beautiful.” It snakes around established beds of seasonal flowers, all of which are identified – in case you want to take ideas home with you. Found objects also have found a happy home in this extensive garden of perennials and annuals. John Everett took the photo above during our leisurely stop. I was impressed with what 80-plus volunteers did to turn this old abandoned bride into a community garden. It was dedicated as the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge (www.lakelurefloweringbridge.org) in 2011.

When my clients, jewelry designer Holly D’Lane Miller and her husband, Hugh Heslep, called me, they finally had their first home, “It was completely empty with a color that looked like paint primer --very drab! We wanted a fresher, more contemporary look,” Holly explains. “We were lucky to start at the very beginning

with Joetta. We had a fabulous museum-grade amethyst geode and almost no furniture, so we knew that with her insights, we could build our new space in a cohesive way over time,” says Holly. After meeting with the couple, Holly said they felt very encouraged. “Honestly, to start, we really only had a desert rock that offered an inspiring color palette of yellow, tan, and terra cottas that Hugh and I both liked. You took that rock and brought its colors scheme to life in terms of paint and furnishings that retained a contemporary feel. It was design alchemy!” When I returned, the couple had bought furniture, painted the walls and had hung artwork. Meeting with Holly, post-children, we updated the living room with low, stained custom bookcases. TIP: Painting existing walls and building a low bookcase looks great, and adds functionality, too. Holly admits that they were surprised by some of my suggestions – “but in a good way” — and would never have thought of them on their own. One of my suggestions was to stain the new bookcase cabinets dark, like their furniture. I thought they needed to look like “wood.”

This, plus new built-ins, updated this living room. • EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT COLORS AND TEXTURES, they still go together beautifully. • SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is to first rethink what’s already paid for.
TIP: Colors don’t have to be “boring” or drab. “We were hoping to maintain an adult space with two small children. The bookcases disappear into the room, leaving a very ‘clean’ look. I think my favorite thing is the overall cohesive aspect of the house — everything is warm and contemporary, but not white, Plus, everything blends so well,” Holly says. One thing she recalls me being very specific about were the dimensions for the low bookcase units behind their sofa, which were built by Brad Alleman, a custom carpenter in Abbeville, Louisiana. They now perfectly house toys and books for their two young girls and can even be flipped around to hide everything completely from sight. Additionally, they are strong enough to be used as extra seating during parties. They ended up staining them with Benjamin Moore oil- based stain in Old Masters Wiping Stain-three parts dark walnut/one part Spanish Oak. What has she learned? “I had seen an article showing Joetta’s skill with a ‘before and after’ in another space. From the moment Joetta and I started to talk, I knew we spoke the same language, and she could bring her expertise into what was for us a huge, daunting project. We had a sofa, the geode, and a guest room bed. That’s it! Her advice to start with an organized plan and to work methodically in order to achieve it was excellent. Her ‘homework’ was critical to keeping sight of everything.” Holly explains. “I think my favorite thing is the overall ‘look’—everything is modern, up to date and everything blends so well,” Holly says. “Even though there are many different colors, they still go together wonderfully,” she adds.

How to Make Your Own Holiday Wreath NOTE: Interior Design Manager Gail Bullion at Cornelius Nursery shares tips on how to create your own wreath at home. Prices noted in parenthesis below are for the materials available for purchase at the nursery. Public Relations consultant Shirley Barr recently was on hand to jot down Bullion’s how-to instructions, as she designed the wreath shown here. 1.Find a small stepladder or other vertical place to hang the wreath as you work on it. It should be secure enough to keep the wreath in place. 2. A lighted faux wreath 30 inches ($69.99) suits a standardwidth front door.

3. Fluff your wreath before beginning as they are shipped flat. 4. Select three decorative sprays to fasten on first. Fresh flowers can quickly lose their appeal, so artificial is recommended – or you could go with dried blooms if it’s to hang in a protected area. Faux sprays – such as the one Bullion uses above – have multiple stems fastened together, making decorating so much easier ($16.99 each spray). 5. Plan placement of flower sprays; work in threes to avoid “headlight” appearance on wreath.

6. To fasten sprays on wreath, use 18-inch, #20 floral wire. Wrap wire with floral tape found at any craft store to make twisting easier. You don’t want your wire too long or it could scratch your door; loop it under the wreath if it seems too long on backside. 7. After flower sprays are fastened on – spacing them to please – create a three dimensional effect by fluffing them out so all the pieces don’t lay flat against the wreath. 8. Additional décor (optional) would be added next: Real preserved magnolia leaves with wired veins and glitter ($10 stem); gold dusted vine for a glamorous wild look as it curves around the wreath but goes where it wants to go ($24.99). For a temporary (one party) wreath, you can use fresh décor on your wreath. 9. Add a famous Cornelius bow using three different prints (2 yards of each ribbon). 20 Houston House & Home Shares Past Favorite Restaurant Recipes
It is said, “necessity is the mother of invention.” The adage certainly describes the birth of Houston House & Home. When magazine owners Mike Harrison and Tim Beeson began renovations on a 1930s-era bungalow in the Montrose area 20-plus years ago, they lamented that no one resource existed to help them. With the help of family and friends, the two men created the first issue of HH&H. It hit the stands on November 1994. Initially, it was called the Houston Renovator and focused on a DIY market. Most of the stories, sprinkled throughout the first issue’s 24-pages, relayed step-by-step approaches on stenciling, refinishing doors, and where to begin when remodeling. Printed on newsprint, it was entirely in black and white. Beeson and Harrison hit on an idea – and a need – that has grown and endured for 20 years.
Deborah Mann Lake served as the first editor in the early ’90s; Donna Mosher succeeded her. Then came Linda Barth and Sandra Cook. Susie Reisenbigler, associate publisher and a 20-year employee who oversees advertising sales, has made it her mission from day one to have the magazine remain a free source of information. Chef Claire Smith of Shade creates a soup to warm your heart and soul (from our January 2005 issue)
Sweet and Spicy Golden Beet Puree with Cilantro Oil 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large yellow onion, cut in small cubes 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon Thai Red Curry Paste 1 pound golden beets, peeled and diced 2 medium carrots, peeled and diced 1 quart water or chicken stock 1/4 cup Thai Sweet Chili Sauce (mae ploy) For the Soup: Sauté the onions in olive oil until softened with the garlic, red curry paste and a pinch of salt. Add the diced beets and carrots and sauté for 15 minutes. Add the water or stock and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Add the sweet chili sauce and blend the soup. Dot or drizzle cilantro oil (recipe below) atop the soup in a decorative pattern.

Central Market chef David Kiser says to go earthy, go seasonal, go French (from our November 2004 issue) Filet Mignon with Red Wine Reduction and Roquefort 2 1/2 pounds filet of beef, trimmed and cut into 3/4-inch slices Salt Freshly ground black pepper 6 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons red wine 1 1/2 cup veal demi-glace (can be purchased pre-prepared at Central Market) 3 ounces Roquefort Le Vieux Berger In a heavy skillet, large enough to hold all the filets easily, one next to the other, heat 2 tablespoons of butter until sizzling and arrange the meat in the pan. Sear the filets for barely 2 minutes on each side. If you don’t have a pan large enough, work quickly in batches. Remove the filets and keep warm on a hot plate inverted over a larger plate so that the meat will not stew in its own juices. For the sauce, pour off the cooking butter from the skillet and reserve for possible use with accompanying vegetables. Deglaze the pan with the wine and reduce it until completely evaporated. Add the demi-glace and bring to a boil over low heat. Simmer very gently until only 1 cup remains, then add the juices which have escaped from the cooked filet. Take the skillet off the heat and whisk in the Roquefort. Taste for seasoning and return the filets to the pan. Carefully simmer them for about 20 seconds without letting the sauce reach the boiling point. Serve the filets, drizzled with the sauce. Filet Mignon with Red Wine Reduction and Roquefort. Cut the cauliflower into small florets. Mix the cheese, cream and egg together. Season the mixture with salt and pepper. Toss the cream mixture and cauliflower together and place in a baking dish. During Christmas, Barron and Lisa Wallace's Riverside Terrace home is filled with the spicy aroma of family recipes – favorites that recall their bayou country roots. Louisiana staples like dark duck gumbo, boudin, dirty rice, and jambalaya are prepared alongside traditional holiday dishes. As a family, they try to keep it simple and personal. “For us, the holidays are about making space in our home and our lives for family, food and fellowship,” Lisa Wallace says. The house on Roseneath is a meticulously restored, 3,700square-foot English Tudor, built in 1939, on a third of an acre lot in the historic Houston neighborhood. Dressed in greenery and decorated with poinsettias, keepsake ornaments, and a sweet-smelling live tree, it’s a perfect holiday haven, and a gathering place for the family’s large 40 house& home | November 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
extended clan. In addition to their own three children, the couple together has 10 married brothers and sisters, and dozens of nieces and nephews. Lisa’s parents live in Houston, and Barron’s mother is in Beaumont. Their home is central to the annual festivities. The house has ample entertaining space in rooms paneled in Pecky Cypress, in addition to a 675-square foot swimming pool added by the previous owner in 2001. To spruce up the exterior, Wallace hangs wreaths festooned with bows of traditional red, green, and ivory on the exterior’s 20 front windows, and the couple lines the yard in about 50 strands of elegant white lights. “Before we bought this house, we lived elsewhere in the neighborhood, so we often drove by it. to the house, so when it came on the market 10 years ago, we knew immediately that we wanted it,” she says. Constructed of attenuated artisan brick and featuring more than 100 windows, the three-story house has a sweeping, peaked roofline and is framed by sprawling oaks and a lofty pine. This will be the family’s tenth holiday season in the house, and it’s a challenge to slow down and make time for what matters, say the couple. She is a certified public accountant, and he is a law partner. On top of their own work, the roster of activities involving their children can be overwhelming. The oldest son is at the University of Texas Austin; their daughter is a junior at Kinkaid, and their son is an 8th grader at St. John’s. A few family traditions, however, are rock solid. graph with Santa, and the extended family plans one outing together after Christmas like bowling or Top Golf in Katy. “On Christmas Eve, as many family members as possible attend a religious service together, and then my husband and I make a late dinner for both of our families,” she says. They all gather for Christmas lunch at Lisa’s mother’s home in Pleasantville where everyone pitches in to help with the cooking. Later, dinner is shared with Barron’s family. “It wouldn’t be Christmas without my husband’s special tenderloin,” Wallace said. Her youngest son contributes macaroni and cheese and there’s always homemade eggnog from a recipe contributed by her grandmother, Emma Meloncon of Abbyville, Louisiana. The other Louisiana grandmother was Lena Mouton of Lafayette. er now prepares. Last Christmas, the Wallace house was on the Blue Triangle Garden Club holiday tour, and the house enjoyed additional decorations created by the club members. “The club was founded 75 years ago and each year, they host an annual Christmas tour of homes on the second Sunday in December,” Wallace explains. A group of members assist the homeowner with shopping for appropriate decorations and to insure that the décor enhances the architectural traits of the house and reflects the owner’s lifestyle. In the Wallace home, natural fibers and traditional themes were highlighted, and the house was decorated in traditional English style with Scottish plaid bows on the trees and Lenox china on the dining room table trimmed in plaid. Other decorations included ivy topiaries, magnolia leaves, berries and pinecones. Lisa’s regular decorating method is what’s practical for a busy mother in the holiday season. “I start with the basics and each week I add a little bit more,” she says. The Wallaces carved out a formal dining space in their spacious living room. The community’s garden club members decorated the table, using natural fibers, Lenox china, and English plaids.
gathering is a free-for-all but gifts are only given to the children. Wallace buys gifts for her parents and in their own family, they draw secret names so each person gets one special gift. Wallace loves displaying the vintage ornaments that were given to her by her mother and mother-in-law. “We have keepsake decorations from our childhood Christmas trees,” she says. Wallace said her mother-in-law started a tradition of buying each grandchild a Christmas ornament every year until they were 10 years old. Now, each child has his and her box of ornaments. “When they have their own families, they will have the ornaments they grew up with, purchased especially for them by their grandmother,” Wallace adds. Other favorite ornaments are ones the children made over the years; she puts out a few each year. Much loved by the couple, the house has taken quite a bit of maintenance. “It was built without a central air-conditioning system and had to be retrofitted,” she says. As a result, some

rooms are always too cold or always hot. The plumbing has been completely replaced and one by one, the windows are being redone. All improvements are done with a desire to maintain the original style of the original builder. On the positive side, the views from all those windows show a landscape of trees, azaleas, and blooming plants. Riverside Terrace has large lots, rolling green vistas, and groves of enormous oaks and mossy ponds as well as wonderful neighbors who are actively involved in their community, Wallace says. Riverside Terrace is a historic Houston neighborhood just east of the Medical Center and Hermann Park. It was established in the 1930s by wealthy Jewish families like the Weingartens and the Sakowitzes who were not allowed to settle in River Oaks. Later it became a predominantly African-American neighborhood with a rich history in the civil rights movement. Since 2000, the neighborhood has continued to be home to a diverse group of Houstonians.

Holiday Recipes Beef Tenderloin: This is incredibly easy to make but can be ruined if it is overcooked. Every year, Barron changes it up a little each time he makes it. One prime (or choice, if the marbling is adequate) beef tenderloin (four to five pounds); have butcher trim excess fat and any silver connective tissue. Sufficient amounts of salt and whole red, black and green peppercorns; add peppercorns to pepper mill and grind out as needed. Jalapeno, seeded and diced 12 cloves of garlic, minced 3-4 slices of bacon 2 cups of red table wine Let the tenderloin come to room temperature in roasting pan, poke a few holes in it at and pour wine over the meat. Let sit for about an hour while you are prepping other ingredients. Mix garlic, jalapeno, salt and sufficient pepper and set aside. After an hour or so, discard wine and place meat in roasting pan. Make three or four slits in the top and stuff with the garlic mixture; then salt and pepper the entire tenderloin and place in the oven on highest broil temperature for 10 minutes or until a brown crust has formed. Remove from oven and place bacon in X pattern across the top of the tenderloin. Reduce heat to 250 and cook for approximately one hour to a medium rare finish. Dark Duck Gumbo She generally follows Paul Prudommes’s recipe for roux along with the suggested seasoning with a few modifications: always watch the ratio of flour to oil; actually use only as much oil as needed/preferred. 50 house& home | November 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

It takes about 45 minutes to make the roux dark. It is past chocolate on the verge of being black; however, it can burn so very low heat and constant attention is required. Once the roux is the proper color add three-quarter cup of onions, celery and bell pepper, minced, to the roux and sauté for 10 minutes then set aside. The key to this gumbo is the stock. In a large stockpot, liberally add one onion, carrot, bell pepper, garlic, shallot, ginger and sauté until soft. Add duck pieces – can also include goose, chicken, shrimp shells, lobster shells for a touch of seafood -- and fill stock pot with water just past half way and bring to a boil. After it reaches a boil, simmer for about an hour. Cool and strain the stock through cheesecloth, if available. Debone the duck and shred for inclusion later. Bring the stock to a soft boil and add roux slowly until the gumbo thickens; add duck and Andouille sausage and simmer for an hour. Add egg yolks, flour, water, milk, evaporated milk and sugar. Cook on medium heat until mixture starts to thicken. Cool, then add vanilla. Beat egg whites until still. Fold into mixture and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Putting Color into Your Holiday Event Planner and holiday decorator extraordinaire Regina Gust went big and colorful when decorating Bill and Neda Dorsett’s house in Friendswood for Christmas. The Dorsetts’ recent move from a smaller-scale home into a much larger one spotlighted some needed changes in their décor. For starters, they needed larger scale furnishings. So, they first called Regina Gust’s twin sister, Janet Gust, to help them shop for new selections and – while she was at it – jazz up their look. dots – and with the piano room decked out in pink curtains, it didn’t take Regina Gust long to map out a holiday decorating plan. If given carte blanche, Gust typically takes her clue from the home’s color scheme. “I didn’t want to go with the traditiona gold, or red and greens (in the Dorsett home),” says Gust. Her twin’s choice of fabrics and color inspired her to wrap the room in a complementary palette for the holidays. The end-result is bold, sophisticated and rather unexpected. And it is undeniably fun.

The show-stopping mantel swag hangs becomingly. Draped from one side to the other, the Dorsetts’ holiday garland is thickly filled with apple green and light turquoise ornaments; all of which is intertwined with a rich satiny blue ribbon. Because the typical mantel garland can weigh up to 40 or 50 pounds, it is always assembled on site. Gust takes a few hours to carefully install it, strategically placing each glass ornament in its spot. When she removes it after the holidays, it will take a little longer to undo it all. She will place each ornament in tissue and store them all in a plastic bin. The artificial garland used here will be rolled up and stored for future use. In an alcove area just off the living room, where the grand piano normally resides, stands a spectacular 12-foot Christmas tree. It is the focal point, dictated by its height and colorful allure. Gust has dressed up the tree in varying shades of pinks and greens, primarily. A few blue accents – in terms of balls and ribbon – are tucked here and there to provide continuity with the room’s existing decor. Tree skirts, she says, can get pricey. Really nice ones start at $200 and go up. For clients who change out their décor and color palettes on occasion, she uses fabric boosted up by cotton balls arranged underneath.

As for tree toppers, unless her client offers up a memory piece, she chooses to go with fillers and ribbon. In the family room, Gust has decked out the mantel in pinks and reds. The French furniture here is more subdued and elegant, yet she rings in the holiday with dazzling gusto. She ensures each room and even the front door garland sings the same holiday tune: bold, elegant and most definitely fun. While Gust chose delicate hand-painted ornaments by Old World Christmas World and Jim Marvin for inside, she went with colorful plastic spheres for the exterior. The outdoor garland must be able to move when the the front door opens and shuts. It is split at the top and is actually rather light. Gust says there are no rules to decorating, especially during the Christmas season when gaiety rules. For her own tree, her children like seeing old family favorites hanging on the branches. Each year, she spruces it all up with ribbon and filler. She gets more creative with her archways and mirrors.

Holiday Decorating Tips & Trends From Professional Regina Gust • Color is on the rise, especially coppery tones and soft pinks. Platinum seems to trump silver and gold. Soft greens and sages glow among a mix of blush tones. • Artificial trees and garlands provide more strength and flexibility when decorating. As for real trees, Gust prefers Noble and Fraser firs. • Intertwine two different types of artificial garlands to create a more custom look. (Maybe one is laden with pinecones.) • When using an artificial garland on the mantel, Gust takes an extra long one and doubles it for desired thickness. • Artificial holly does not stain floors and carpet. She does like to use real dried flowers and willows. Eucalyptus makes nice filler. Hydrangeas and magnolia leaves are favorites. • Incorporating a variety of textures in arrangements or in other décor boosts interest and appeal.

It will dry out, the limbs will drop and ornaments might fall and break. • Place garland in unexpected places, such as mirrors and archways. • When planning a holiday party, begin planning the décor in the fall. • Post-holiday, store anything glittery or having a special finish in a climate-controlled area. • Consider holiday décor an investment. GINGER BARBER Named “Designer of the Year” by the Decorative Center Houston for 2014, Ginger Barber’s work stands out as being tranquil and uncomplicated. She attracts a Who’s Who of clients; all of who recognize her instinctive abilities to mix the expected with the unexpected. Her work has appeared in such national publications as Country Home, House Beautiful, Southern Living and others. “I’ve enjoyed many years of wonderful projects – and clients – all over the country. Each project brings new inspiration and knowledge for the next,” she says. Ginger Barber creates an aesthetically pleasing balance between contemporary and Old World styles.
Where are you from, and what is your design background?. I’m from Merritt Island, Florida, and I’ve been in the interior design field for 34 years. I received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts with a major in Interior Design from the Ringling School of Art in Florida. Who influenced you, and whom did you work with before going out on your own? When I arrived in Houston, I worked as the personal assistant to Beau Theriot who owns the Brownstone Gallery. While I don’t do the same type of interiors he favors, I learned so much from him. I also had the great opportunity to work with the late James Northcutt, the renowned Los Angeles interior designer who worked with resorts worldwide. He called to talk to me about one of his projects when I was already here in Houston. I flew to LA, where he hired me on the spot. The client we worked on together was the Rosewood Corporation. We were given carte blanche . . .it was an amazing growth period for me. That was over 25 years ago. As for interior designers today, I am influenced by the late Michael Taylor, known for creating the “California look.” (Architectural Digest name him as being one of the 20 Greatest Designers of all time.) I also like a lot of what Belgium-based Interior Designer Axel Vervoordt does. I like his minimal, lived-in looks. What do you personally favor for the looks you design, and what do you hope to achieve for your clients? I want an uncomplicated look; one that offers a mix of natural and textured materials. I prefer neutral palettes, gravitating toward solid whites, beiges or subtle repetitive patterns. The color in my projects comes from the light hues on the walls, although I prefer white, and area rugs. Our lives are often so hectic that it’s easy to be caught up in a visual overload. My interiors are calm; places that people feel comfortable living in. I go for the best quality, which doesn’t necessarily translate into being the most expensive. I love a shabby old table and dressing it up with an amazing fragment piece. It’s like pairing old blue jeans with a Chanel jacket. It’s that kind of juxtaposition that I like. The feeling I want my projects to evoke would be something likened to walking on the beach or driving in the country. Free, uncomplicated, natural. What fabrics and rugs do you like, since those are starting points for you? Yes, each room begins with the floor. I like seagrass, which is a great look and the best option for those with kids and pets. Not jute; wihle it’s pretty, it;s not as durable. I also like old faded Oushaks. The more worn and muted, the better. You say you like found objects. What items call to you? In keeping with my less is more approach, I like things that are one of a kind. It can be a stone or wood fragment, or some sort of relief work that you can’t find anymore.
I don’t care for collections that sit and collect dust. It’s too much. I like a mix of stone and wood, and I love painted distressed furniture. My fabric preference is cottons and linens. What are some of your favorite shops – other than the one you own, The Sitting Room on Alabama? Well, it’s hard to name just a couple. There’s so much great shopping here. But I do like these:

Getting Personal What can you NOT live without? Being at the barn on weekends. As a kid, I was always at the barn. We had 10 acres on the river and so many animals. I loved horses and still do. What do you like to do when not working? What do you like to do when not working? I am passionate about Habitat for Horses (www.habitatforhorses.org). I’m currently on their board. While out birding on Galveston island a while back with a friend, I came up a neglected horse in a field. He was tied to a post.
