reimagining home

For new inspiration, bright ideas and a little traditional charm? It’s that time of the year again . . . when homeowners open their doors to the public. There are four home tours scheduled this month. The AIA-Houston tour, October 25 & 26, showcases the works of some of the city’s top architects. The Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects judges submissions based on design excellence, craftsmanship and innovation. We’re delighted to be one of the sponsors of the AIA tour, in addition to featuring one of the tour houses on page 40. It’s a very livable design by architect Kelly Cusimano, who makes it a standout by turning even the most functional components – from the gutters to the garage – into nicely developed aesthetic features. Going from the AIA’s mostly contemporary and modern lineup, The Eastwood Civic Association shows off its early 20th century foursquare, craftsman and bungalow styles. Eastwood hosts its annual tour on October 18 & 19. On the same two weekends mentioned, the Bellaire Fall New Home Showcase features the

work of eight builders. You’ll get to see new trends in both design and furnishings. Nine homes will be on the tour. Also on these weekends is the West University Festival of Homes Tour. We’re offering more information about each tour on page 34. Also opening their doors is the new showroom Couch (www.couchhouston.com), located at the Decorative Center Houston, 5120 Woodway. Each sofa, in addition to other upholstered pieces, is made to order. They promise to build it to your exact specifications, beginning with design. On October 6, Ann Sacks’ Houston showroom holds its grand opening at 2800 Kirby, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. You’ll find celebrated international designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard in the gathering, too. Cheers! -Susan (and Sam) HOUSTON

AN ARTIST GETS HELP TAKING Boring Space to Productive Haven B Y J O E T TA M O U L D E N • P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y J A N E T L E N Z E N AFTER: The dated skylight was removed, new copper lighting was added, and the walls were painted in Sherwin –Williams’ “Alabaster.” Updates included an under-mount sleek sink fitted with a new gooseneck faucet, puck under- cabinet lighting, granite counters with subway tile backsplash, new 30-inch wide ovens, and a clean plate rail. BEFORE: A dated skylight, florescent lighting and peach walls dated this kitchen. The decorated plate rail and cabinet ends, white Formica countertops and backsplash, narrow ovens with knobs, a clumsy sink and dated hardware and faucet did nothing to enhance the space. 18 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Artist Sonia Miller contacted me because she did not like her kitchen and breakfast room. After her neighbors across the street had used me to prepare their home for sale, she and husband Randy had been meaning to call me for quite some time. “Even though we weren’t planning to sell our home, it did need some updating, and I wanted to avoid making costly mistakes along the way. I also wanted to make improvements that would help my home’s value in the future,” Sonia explains.

BEFORE

AFTER: A new Aidan Gray chandelier, alabaster white walls showcasing simplified art, along with improved furniture placement made the room functional. The artist is now more inspired to work here. BEFORE: A dated chandelier, peach walls, poor furniture choices and unbalanced art placement made this multi-purpose room zapped any creative energy. 20 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

She also called because of budgetary restraints. She wanted to ensure getting the most bang from her buck. “I wanted guidance and reassurance that what I had in my mind would work. I called Joetta because she had worked with many people and would be able to help me,” says Sonia. Sonia is a painter, and she wanted the space to have great light and to function as a working kitchen and breakfast room, too. My first thought was to save Sonia’s tile floor and work with it, colorwise. “Although we only met once, our meeting exceeded my expectations,” Sonia says. We walked through her house, and I made recommendations about areas that needed improvement as well as reassuring her that other areas were fine and looked great. As a follow-up, I sent her a list outlining her areas of concern and the names of professionals who could do the work. “You were also available by email for any concerns or questions. And your emailed homework assignments were great, because I’m so visual and they gave me a jumping off place to contemplate what I really wanted the space to be,” Sonia explains. Thinking about that allowed me to get a kitchen, breakfast room and create a studio that really works for me.” The most difficult suggestion centered around creating a neutral space to appeal to the widest number of potential buyers in the future. “Because I am a painter who loves color, it was difficult for me. I was afraid I would become bored, but this could not be further from the truth. I find that I can work better in the area because I am able to keep it so tidy and there is a place for everything.”

21

AFTER: A trio of convex mirrors, de-cluttered bookcases, a new seamless window and a matching granite countertop subtracted years from this room. BEFORE: Old windows and clutter on both the tile countertop and bookshelves did not flatter this breakfast room.

TRADE SECRETS • DO GATHER PHOTOS FROM MAGAZINES AND BOOKS of remodeling projects you find appealing. They are a handy shor t cut to show your design professional the exact look you want. • HIRE A DECORATOR to look objectively at your spaces and make suggestions that will help you redecorate on your budget. • SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is to first rethink what’s already paid for.

Sonia worked with contractor Dwayne Wuneberger at Dwayne Designs to map out extensive pull-out cabinets to house everything, even wet artwork. He also created inexpensive under-cabinet lighting and installed a Kohler oversized sink with a raised faucet. “My talented friend Portia Kinney suggested I add touches of gold to dress up the room and make it as elegant as possible -- and still have it function as a working studio,” Sonia says. She said it is a joy to get a functional working studio and beautiful breakfast room from one space, and to walk in, fix a cup of coffee, turn on her music, be surrounded by light and begin to paint. “Friends and family love the space – they all said it looks updated but still looks like us. “What I learned from this experience was that you can update your home to fit your needs now and make it appealing to buyers in the future. It is well worth consulting a professional before beginning a renovation in your home. Take your time, think about what you want from your home at this point in your life, and make your dreams come true”, Sonia says.

Joetta Moulden offers home makeovers using your own home furnishings to create the home you’ve always dreamed of. Joetta believes your pieces collected through the years reflect your personality and can artfully arranged. Her ability to focus on your personal style and not let her own preferences influence the design of your home makes her unique. See more makeovers on her Web site at www.shelterstyle.com, e-mail her at joetta@shelterstyle.com or call 713-461-2063. If an initial appointment or referral is booked by October 31, a 10 percent first meeting discount will be given. Shelterstyle.com holds a "Pages of Happiness" rating and, for the fifth consecutive year, a “Super Service Award” presented to 5 percent of companies that achieve and maintain a superior rating on Angie’s List. 22 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Landscaping lighting is a successful deterrent to residential crime, according to Brad Hall at BDH Outdoor Lighting. Below: Protect America’s $19.99/mo. home security monitoring system features free equipment and no installation fees.

KEEPING A WATCHFUL EYE Easier Today Than Ever Before

The shrill sound of someone’s security alarm still occasionally goes off in neighborhoods. But, have you noticed it’s happening with less frequency? Is it because burglaries just don’t happen anymore, or is it something else? Experts reveal that it’s a little bit of both. Easy targets remain vulnerable, for sure. But the advancements in technology, keypad locks with changeable codes, smart sensor lights and sophisticated home surveillance cameras can all take credit as being formidable deterrents. According to Security Options, smart phones and laptops have invited in a whole host of applica-

tions that homeowners can use to circumvent archaic systems that have to be both hard wired and connected to a land phone. Security applications have taken a step forward to provide such additional services as alerting users to an unwelcome party at their home, securing the home computer, or even sending a notice if the medicine cabinet opens without permission. By downloading certain apps, users can get realtime images and notices of any unusual movement at their home on their smart phones. Alarm.com to set or release wireless alarm systems remotely. It is free to use just by signing up. iSmartAlarm sells users a WiFi camera for around $79 and then offers a free app that visually monitors the home. If an un-welcomed person enters the home, the owner gets notified. Many also monitor temperature extremes, and detect smoke and carbon monoxide. Owners can now have systems monitored by a third-party or do it themselves, mainly by using videos that permanently capture images. Other application services to check out: Vivint, AtHome, Presence, Canary, iScentry, Security Camera, Dropcam and iCam. With the new equipment being wireless, would-be burglars have a harder time getting inside. If they cannot access a home within 60 seconds, it becomes more of a risk.

Lastly, some even better news: A survey by the Electronic Security Association (ESA) that involved 10 of the country’s largest insurance companies indicated homeowners’ policies are discounted up to 20 percent, if alarms are in place.

What Not to Do Keeping Your Home Safe • Don’t make you home look like an easy target. Keep trees and bushes trimmed, especially at doorways and low windows. Use motion sensors to keep your entry and darker areas lit. • Don’t make it obvious no one is home. Keep newspapers and mail picked up. Mow the lawn. • Don’t forget the patio door. Stick a metal pipe in the sliding door track to prevent forcible entry. • Don’t use wimpy locks. Get a deadbolt that is one inch or longer to prevent the doorframe from being spread. Do use keypads when having many workers in and out of the house. The entry codes can and should be changed once work is completed. Keep your home safe by having friends and neighbors stop by to bring in your mail, pick up any newspapers and alternating interior lights.

EDITOR’S PICKS

We thought it might be fun to share a sample of the 20 product nominees vying for the 2014 People’s Design Award, presented this month by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The organization highlights projects that have the capacity to revolutionize our daily lives through innovative design.

MUSHROOM BUILDING BRICKS By Evocative and mycologist Philip Ross

Beneath the surface of mushrooms grows mycelium, a network of thin, root-like fibers. When they dry, they become an extremely strong building material resistant to water, mold and fire. The developers hope the fibers can be ultimately used for insulation and building foundations.

THE DRIFT LIGHT By Saffron

Smarter than the average light bulb, it mimics the setting sun to ease you into a more natural and peaceful sleep by slowly dimming over a 37-minute period. It was designed to emit less blue light that suppresses melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate sleep. It also, with a flip of a switch, act as a regular light bulb. LUMIO LAMP By designer Max Gunawan

A wooden binding disguises the light as a book. Just open the cover and its pages emit a warm, dimmable LED light. Powerful magnets allow users to attach or hang it from any metallic surface. It has an eight-hour battery life and is water resistant.

For more information: www.smithsonianmag.com

SPOR By Saffron

SABI SPACE By Sabi

It’s the power of the sun – in your pocket, say Spor designers. Although not the first solar-powered battery charger available, it is the first to be compact and offer a nice looking design. Spor can charge two devices at once. Either plug it into an outlet or expose it to sunlight. Users can customize its shell with 3-D printing.

Sabi is adding to its existing product line of chic pillboxes and canes, a 13-piece set of easy-to-intall bathroom accessories. Sabi asked the firm MAP to create mirrors, towel racks, hooks, grab bars and toilet paper dispensers that can either twist on or adhere by a magnet to a standardized peg. No drilling required; the peg sticks to the wall, making any remodel a cinch.

All About Versatility Industrial Farmhouse Opens its Doors on AIA Tour | By Susan Fox | Photos by Zac Seewald

Linda Eyles Design helped the homeowners find the right balance in what they call their industrial farmhouse -- located in Southside Place. 40 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

When the Kirtons asked architect Kelly Cusimano to design their third house in Southside Place, even the unknown future owners of the 4,300-square-foot industrial farmhouse came into the picture. As Cusimano began blueprinting the L-shaped house, he ensured versatility of the plans. It was his intent to satisfy an important question the Kirtons had posed. If they ever wanted to sell the house, would their customized rooms fit the needs of a buyer? The Kirtons worked with Cusimano to make sure their “Xbox lounge” could easily transform into a game room, a guest room or a study. It offers possibilities, since it is located at the end of the house and also includes a full bath. What they have dubbed as “the piano room” could easy become a formal dining space, based on its proximity to the butler’s pantry that leads into the kitchen. The Cusimano-Kirton team also decided to place stained cedar doors at both ends of the garage. Since the garage space backs up to the backyard, it can be the perfect party pavilion just by opening up the back door. “We have three busy children, and we entertain quite a bit,” says Krista Kirton, noting a couple of ways the house accommodates them. “First, there are many ways to enter and exit the house, which facilitates traffic flow. “Secondly, we though long and hard how to make the house comfortable for both kids and adults when gathered altogether. “Kelly also incorporated the use of an enfilade, which prevents any deadends,” she says. The enfilade is a borrowed design feature of grand European homes, where rooms connect with one another by way of doorways situated in a shotgun-effect. Every facet of the home’s design is purposeful. “We don’t design a house and then just tack on elements of interest – even if it’s as functional and routine as a gutter.

Instead, we incorporate it into the overall design aesthetic,” says Cusimano. “It becomes like the jewelry of the house. “The roof in general, with all its components and pieces, is all equally addressed as being important visual features of the house,” says Cusimano. In some of the rooms, the rafters and corrugated galvalume metal can be seen and the obvious intent is to draw admiration. “If may not be noticeable to the average visitor, but everything is part of a grand plan,” explains Kirton. Interior Designer Linda Eyles “was very helpful in helping me with this house. She was an integral part of the design process,” says Kirton. “Many parts of the house were designed specifically for furnishings we already owned,” she adds. “This house demanded careful planning at all stages,” says Cusimano. “I was really pleased on how all the materials came together in such a simple way,” says Cusimano. “Simplicity is actually difficult to achieve, especially when we are not relying on trim and moldings to cover up flaws. There was zero tolerance for that type of thing in this house.” The house was designed with versatility in mind. While the current family enjoys a combined space of living, cooking and dining, future owners have the option of using the music room as a formal dining room. Cedar doors at the back of the garage can open up into the backyard, turning the space into a party pavillion. The master suite is situated above the garage and connects to the main house through a secondlevel metal and glass “bridge.”

The Kirtons – both Krista and Kevin – originally met with Cusimano at their former home, located around the corner from this one. They came to Cusimano with the idea of designing a farmhouse but, according to the architect, the couple “pushed it to become a little edgier.” As a result, a hybrid of two distinctly different looks evolved. The three of them describe it as “industrial farmhouse.”

“I was pleased as to how all the materials came together in a simple way,” says Kelly Cusimano, the architect. The wall siding is poplar wood painted white. The floor is white oak. The downstairs area is stained concrete.

46 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“It’s easy to be seduced by so many ideas, but you can’t put it all into one,” says Cusimano. The secret on this project was careful editing. Their lot dictated some of the design. Rather than go with a boxy look with a strip of land in back, they wanted to maximize the view from each room,” says Cusimano. The fact the house backs up to a bayou made the bayou an important consideration.

Living in Houston’s Frank Lloyd Wright House BY MARSHA CANRIGHT

L

iving in a Frank Lloyd Wright house is a joy, an honor and yes, a responsibility – like owning a painting by Picasso. Its upside is lofty, even spiritual, and the downside – well, fixable. Dr. Allen Gaw knows. He is the owner of the William Thaxton house built by Wright in 1954 at the height of the architect’s fame. It’s one of only three houses built by Wright in Texas, and the only one in Houston. “When you step inside, the house seems to enclose you,” Gaw says. “It is intimate, serene and peaceful. You never feel lost in a big space.” The original house is small by modern standards – less than 2,000 square feet — and while it is not classified as one of Wright’s outstanding structures, it has the character and organic beauty that is the architect’s trademark.

As was his custom, Wright designed all the built-in furniture, using primarily redwood and mahagony. Below in the dining room, he built a half-octogan shaped table that is attached to a wall with low rolling stools.

58 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

The house was sited on 1.2 acres of wooded land in what is now Bunker Hill Village. It is built of basic simple materials, all characteristic of Wright: plate glass, refined concrete blocks, inside and out, redwood and mahogany woods, and polished concrete floors. Still mesmerized by the house after more than two decades of ownership, Gaw says it is difficult to explain the effect it has on the senses. “You have to be inside of it to see,” he adds. For example, the house is composed of parallelograms. It has no right angles. It has a fireplace so large you can walk into it. It has a triangle skylight in the kitchen. And Wright even designed all the furnishings. “Everything is made to fit,” says Gaw. “The house has a sense of constant order.” So what might the downside of this gem of a house be? There are several, all intrinsic to Wright’s design philosophy in the latter part of his working life. That is, small bedrooms and distinctly unspa-like bathrooms in less than 2,000 square feet of living space —

“The house has a sense of constant order to it,” says Allen Gaw, a local dentist and the current owner who has just put it on the market. The house was built as a parallelogram, meaning it has no right angles. The skylights in the rather large kitchen are equilateral triangles, with each corner being 60 degrees.

not the expected standard for those who can afford to own such an iconic piece of American history. “The bedrooms were designed for sleeping only,” Gaw says. The restrooms were for their singular functions. That’s why, during the home’s restoration, the Gaw family built an annex, a subtle arc framing the original house and preserving its aesthetic, while providing for the expectations of a modern family. “Most of Wright's houses, especially those built in the last 25 years of his practice, 1934 to 1959, are fairly small,” says Stephen Fox, a professor of architecture at Rice University. “They correspond to the house type Wright called Usonian – his term for ‘American’ – and his ideal home for a middle-income American family.” The houses tend to have expansive living areas, organized around a fireplace, but small bedrooms and baths, which make the Thaxton-Gaw house typical of this Wright design. “Among the finest qualities of this house is the skylit kitchen, large by Usonian standards,” Fox says.

Located in Bunker Hill Village, the house is a Usonian home. It is among 60 such house types in the U.S. designed by the architect. Usonian homes are usually smaller, single-story and have no garage and little storage. The current owners of the Thaxton dwelling built an annex that quadruples the space.

62 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Gaw said his favorite area is the internal open courtyard with the pool and garden. “Especially in the evenings, you are outside but still inside, and it is a very calm, safe and protective space.” After Mr. and Mrs. Thaxton sold the house in the late 1960s, the house went through a succession of owners who made increasingly radical and unsympathetic alterations to make it more conventional, according to Fox. By the 1990s, it entered the Houston market as a teardown. Preservation Houston and Vicki List McIntosh, the president of the organization, expended considerable effort to ensure that the house would be sold to someone who would preserve it rather than demolish it. “That's when Drs. Betty Lee and Allen F. Gaw came along and bought the house,” says Fox. “They deserve immense credit for rescuing this house and ensuring its preservation.” Before becoming a dentist, Dr. Betty Gaw had studied architecture.

Still mesmerized by the house after more than two decades of ownership, Dr. Gaw says it is difficult to explain the effect it has on the senses. The original owner commissioned Wright to build his family a “work of art” that would be suitable for living as well as entertaining.

64 house& home | October 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“We only went to see the house because it had received attention, and we had an interest in the architecture,” Gaw says. “It was dilapidated and the beautiful red wood paneling had been painted over with many coats of paint,” he adds. So, they made the commitment and bought the house. The couple worked with Bob Inaba at Kirksey Architects to restore the house and to build the substantial annex that wraps around the back of the Wright house, touching it at either end but otherwise stepping back from it, Fox says. The annex more than quadruples the living space. Gaw – who visited with the original owner in the 1990s – said a favorite story about the house is how it became air-conditioned. “Originally, Wright had not planned on air conditioning the house, and when Thaxton explained ‘this is Houston; this is swampland,’ Wright relented but would not let his original design be altered,” Gaw says. “Instead, all the AC ducts had to be inserted into the foundation, and the cool air comes out of the floor.” Because of the change, the foundation was made

about three feet deep, with the side benefit that, after 60 years, the foundation is still solid, Gaw further explains. Thaxton also told Gaw that the motivation behind having Wright design the house was that he hoped to develop a subdivision. It was in a densely wooded area – the Memorial area – then considered out in the sticks – and he believed if a famous architect built a home there, others would follow. Wright’s other Texas houses are in Amarillo and Dallas. The Dallas Theater Center is also his creation. During Gaw’s long tenure in the house, people from around the world have come to visit and to view Wright’s work. Like any piece of art it may be in the care of one family but in a larger sense, it belongs to everyone. NOTE: The 8,000-square-foot house, located at 12020 Tall Oaks St., is currently for sale at a little more than $3.1 million. Insurance executive William Thaxton Jr. commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build this home in 1954. The next owner “updated it to the horror of architectural purists. But in 1991, the current owners meticulously restored the house, while also adding a large livable annex to the original 1,800 square feet.

GARDENING

BY ANGELA CHANDLER

Mix it Up Mixing edibles with ornamental plants in the landscape provide a visually interesting mix as well as a productive garden.

Creating Your Own Edible Landscaping

ruits, vegetables, and herbs . . . we are growing them in gardens all across the country with increasing frequency. Not everyone has space for an orchard or a vegetable plot. Learning to landscape with edibles is a creative way to work food crops into our yards while reserving play spaces for kids and pets, and social spaces for entertaining and relaxation. We can do all of this without losing any of our curb appeal. Edible landscaping is the art of blending edibles and ornamentals in practical but beautiful displays. Our goal is to please the eye as well as the palate. Any edible plant can be worked into the ornamental garden, but some are just prettier than others. Start looking at edible plants for their ornamental qualities – color, texture and form.

Fruit trees offer all of the beauty of small flowering trees. They have a similar bloom season and length of bloom. Dwarf and semi-dwarf fruit trees can be worked into any ornamental bed that provides sufficient sunlight and drainage. Citrus and pomegranates can be used as specimens, hedges and screens. Beautiful borders become bountiful borders when planted with basils or oreganos in the summer, and parsley, spinach or strawberries in the cooler months. Kale, cabbage and cauliflower are beautiful plants in any setting. Their large, textured leaves would compete with any hosta. Mustards and lettuces come in strikingly beautiful leaf colors that include greens, reds, and dark garnet. Plant them in geometric designs for added impact.

Above and Below: Peppers and other edibles can mix easily with such plants as salvias. Or plan herbs at the base of a tomato bush or fruit tree.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up; annuals and edibles make good bedfellows. Peppers and eggplants can be inter-planted with salvias and angelonias for a blast of summer color. For winter, try chard and snapdragons with a scattering of lobelia or nasturtiums. A trellis overflowing with cherry tomatoes, sweet potato vines, or sugar snap peas is a perfect backdrop for annuals and herbs planted at their feet. Success with edible landscaping depends on healthy soils and adequate sunlight. Group plants with similar nutrition, water and sunlight demands. Work two to three inches of compost and the recommended amount of slow release organic fertilizer into the soil before planting. Replenish the fertilizer every four to six weeks for the best performance. PET OF THE MONTH DUUUUUUUDE!!! I’M BRAD! I’m stoked to be here on the pet page. It’s like COSMIC that I was able to think about, like, how to find a home and make a new life for myself...and I totally got picked for this. Brah, I’m such a quiet soul, I just listen for the waves within and think about one day climbing on a board at the North Shore. I would so totally settle for a day trip to Surfside once in a while. I have a cousin down there. Dude tells me the waves just past the jetty are almost like real surfing, like, in California...bays. But I’m down with the low tides here. Helps me keep my Zen for when the big wave comes some day. Peace! 5-years-old Shepherd cross ID# 262022 The Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., to make choosing the adoption option as easy as possible!
