PROUD AMERICANS Q&A With Congressman Kevin Brady

AUBREY R. TAYLOR: Congressman Brady, can you share your thoughts on freedom and what it means to you? CONGRESSMAN KEVIN BRADY: Freedom is everything. But what Freedom will never be is free. Freedom is a precious gift that our veterans and our fallen have secured for us and continue to secure for us. Being an American is about being free. Martin Luther King, Junior said “we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom.” He was so right that “a man can't ride you unless your back is bent.” As Americans we must always stand proud and tall for freedom and against injustice. We must have faith to take the harder path with the greatest rewards. Being a servant leader will never be the easy path, but it is the most rewarding path. Serving my constituents and my state in Washington, DC is an honor that I do not take lightly. It’s my duty to preserve freedom for all Americans. As Dr. King said “The time is always right to do what is right.” That time is now. AUBREY R. TAYLOR: Congressman Brady, why are you proud to be an American? CONGRESSMAN KEVIN BRADY: I first understood why I’m proud of being American from my mom. In 1967, my world changed when dad took on a difficult case for our local church. While helping an elderly woman escape an abusive marriage, we were repeatedly threatened. Mom even learned to use a gun, just in case. When the trial started, this angry man burst into the courtroom, killed his wife, killed my father and shot the judge – who thankfully lived. His actions left our mom to raise five children by herself – ages 14 to 3. I tell you this because being an American is about making my fiercely independent and determined mother proud. She kept five kids on the straight and narrow with a good offensive. She had us serving our community from morning to night. For me, it was Boy Scouts, altar boy at two churches, year-round sports and student government. In our community, if a club or activity existed, it was a good bet you’d find a Brady kid there. She taught each of us to be independent, optimistic, to have faith in God and to give back. Everything I am. Everything I know about being an American, I owe my mom.

Anthony A. Allen President/Apostle - (281)210-8374 Bishop Anthony A. Allen is an apostolic leader who also serves the community at large as a businessman, entrepreneur, investor, author and entertainer. He is the founder and president of Anthony Allen Ministries, a ministry called to serve the urban community. In 2001 Bishop Anthony A. Allen received a word from the Holy Spirit instructing him to create systems that will keep and grow God’s people. Giving up his dream of one day becoming a head coach for the NFL he set out to pursue the call of God on his life. The first system he set out to create evolved from the first message he preached entitled: “Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus.” This message which came from the book of St. Luke 9:23 lead Bishop Anthony A. Allen to begin designing a church operation system entitled Total Control. After years of development, his spiritual father the late Pastor Noah Newcoste and his mother Evengelist Christine Newcoste handed over the responsibility of carrying on their ministry, House of Hope International Church. Once given this responsibility he was directed to implement the Total Control system. The first instructional book entitled: “Total Control 101” (You Are In Total Control) was released in February of 2013, and the system was launched. Total Control 101 serves as the first of a thirteen instructional book series that ranges from you taking total control of you, to you taking total control of your community duties abroad. Now that the book which serves as the foundation to the system has been released, Bishop Anthony A. Allen serves the Kingdom of God eagerly awaiting a word from the Holy Spirit on when to release the next book from this series along with other material associated with the system. Beyond his ministerial duties, Bishop Anthony A. Allen is also the owner of Allen Hip-Hop Enterprise LLC, a company aimed at gaining the attention of the urban community at large with subsidiary companies like MBBG Records, D.O.C FA LIFE (Urban Wear) and Bishop A Enterprise (Production Company). He is also a licensed T.V. Producer with the Houston Media Source, a music producer and music artist (TPK BISHOP A) with the group Hip-Hop Party League. His music group has been featured on several reality shows, T.V. competitions and sitcoms. He is a former collegiate football and track athlete for Texas A&M Commerce who gives back to the future of athletics by serving as an assistant coach with the Mainland Jaguars out of Galveston County. He is also the proud husband to First Lady Matishe R. Allen and the father of a combined family of 12 outstanding children and grandfather to 6 blessed grandchildren. Soon to celebrate 16 years in ministry, Bishop Anthony A. Allen looks forward to getting involved in his passion of ministering economic growth to the masses. Building an immersive, inclusive culture ack In January, during the semester kickoff, first-year evening MBA for Professionals students were completing traditional team-building exercises to earn cash for a unique project that required bicycle parts. Eight teams constructed eight bikes, and the competition was fierce. Soon after, and while the competition raged on, a group of students from Yellowstone Academy, a school serving some of Houston’s neediest families, entered the ballroom at the student center. Their head of school explained to the MBAs that the bikes they built that day were about to change the life of a child at

his school, and she thanked them. “The students didn’t know they were making the bikes for these kids,” Melanie Holiday, program specialist in the professionals program, said. “It was amazing.”

Fully employed, fully loaded curriculum Brooke Sabo has been director of student services for the Rice MBA for Professionals (MBAP) program since its inception in 2006 and has watched its growth over the past seven years. What was once a weeknight schedule with less than 100 total stu-

dents has expanded by nearly five times and, since 2010, has offered a weekend schedule as well. “It grew a lot faster than expected,” Sabo said. “The first group was 70 students, and it grew to 115 the next year. Now, the MBAP program has over 320 students.” Unlike many programs aimed at working professionals, Rice’s two-year MBAP program is cohort-based, meaning students enter, take courses and graduate together. “It’s a fulltime curriculum; they take 16 hours a semester,” Sabo explained. “The only reason they’d be considered part-time is because they’re not here during the day. We consider this to be a full-time experience.” Sue Oldham, director of admissions development for the professionals program adds, “It’s really geared towards those working professionals who want to improve their career trajectory. They’re a little more established than people in the full-time MBA program; most of them have been out of college for an average of five to six years. They’re in a certain function and might want to change or move up quickly within their function.”

The campus advantage One of seven academic units at Rice University, the Jones School sits on the 300acre campus in the heart of Houston. Along with all the benefits of going to graduate school on a campus, there are the advantages of having the faculty, staff, Career Management Center, Admissions,

Alumni Office, Corporation Relations and Office of Student Services accessible and available in one place. Exner, for example, was able to utilize the career services resources to successfully transition from corporate finance at Marathon to investment banking at Citi. “The experiences we provide are very

much as if you were in the full-time program, and a lot of students take advantage of that,” Sabo said. “We encourage them to be part of the Jones School community and the Rice community when they’re on campus. There’s a lot more to being an MBA than going to class, and we encourage them to be active. They came to Rice for a reason.”

Rudley, has taken a personal interest in recruiting and is spearheading a presidential bus tour that has traveled across the state and awarded close to $100,000 in scholarships on the spot. Recently, Rudley ended a tour to community colleges in the city, again awarding

dollars to students who meet the criteria for immediate transition into the university. The tour also travels to high schools in the immediate Houston area. The goal is to increase enrollment by a significant number by fall 2014. In addition to the Presidential Bus Tour, TSU will be promoting many of its outstanding programs, featuring alumni via billboards, and creating additional printed pieces and public service announcements. It will be touting its unique degree programs. Some of TSU’s unique programs are only available at Texas Southern, and many that will surprise the community. Programs that are unique to Texas

Southern University include: Maritime Transportation, Aviation Science Management, Urban Planning and Environmental Policy, Entertainment and the Recording Industry, Sports Management, and Emergency Management and Homeland Security. The University will also push its online degree programs such as eMBA, eMPA and the Curriculum and Instruction Bilingual Degree in its College of Education. It also has in its arsenal, the new Confucius Institute where students can learn Mandarin, its pharmacy and health sciences programs and degrees in education. The University’s admissions office is also reporting an uptick in the number of students with a 3.0 grade point average

(GPA) or better and that transfer student applications are up by 4 percent (4%). “Outreach to area high schools and participation in community events will also help enrollment numbers. Texas Southern University is doing what it does best in times when competition for students are tough – it relies on its grassroots connections and programs that lead to jobs of the future,” states the University Spokesperson Eva Pickens The president, administrators and recruiters remain committed to the students on

campus, and development officers and alumni continue to raise money for scholarships and financial aid. A Graduation Success Scholarship fund has been created that will help students who are near graduation, but financially struggling to stay in school and finish their degrees. Rudley’s bus tour is part of a “threepronged attack” (bus tour, scholarships and new dorms) that he hopes will double the size of next year's freshman class and increase Ground is being broken this month on a new $51 million dorm that will house 800 freshmen,

and include cafeterias and recreational rooms that officials hope will keep students on campus and in classes. An aggressive outreach campaign, using media (print, television, radio and digital tools) personal visits, social media and high-profile alumni, is being launched to raise awareness of the university’s research and achievements. “I'm shooting for the stars, because that's kind of how I play the game," Rudley said. "I'm very optimistic we'll get there."

La June Montgomery Tabron, President, W.K. Kellogg Foundation: Leadership and Community Engagement

ack in January, La June Montgomery Tabron became the first woman and the first African American to head the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Based in Battle Creek, Michigan, the foundation has in recent years implemented an integrated strategy of wrapping its commitment to racial equity and civic engagement around efforts to ensure the education and health of children and the economic security of their families. Having grown up in a family of ten children in inner-city Detroit, Tabron has said that she knows first-hand the challenges faced by the families the foundation seeks to help. “In so many ways, my own journey illustrates the power and impact of what is possible with the right conditions.” Recently PND spoke with Tabron, a twenty-six-year veteran of the foundation, about the Kellogg Foundation’s work to strengthen leadership at the community level, its efforts to expand opportunity for boys and young men of color, and its collaborative approach — at the local, state, and national level — to addressing complex issues at the intersection of race, place, and income.

Philanthropy News Digest: Before you were named president of the Kellogg Foundation last fall, you had been with the foundation for twenty-six years, most recently as executive vice president of operations and treasurer. What are the most significant changes you’ve seen at the foundation — and in philanthropy more generally — over the last two and a half decades? La June Montgomery Tabron: I think the most significant change at the foundation, and in philanthropy, has been the constant evolution toward greater focus. In our particular organization, we’ve never lost sight of our North Star, which is that we are here to help people help themselves. But as we have learned more about the best way to do that, we’ve shifted the focus of our work to early childhood and an early childhood framework that takes into account what children need at the beginning of their lives in order to succeed throughout their life. At the Kellogg Foundation, there has been a constant shift, based on the learning and work we’ve done over the years, to begin to understand how change happens. PND: As a woman of color who has risen through the ranks to become the pres-

ident of the sixth-largest foundation in the United States, do you feel you bring a unique perspective to that work? LMT: Well, I think my background does help inform the type of work we’re engaged in. We are working on the ground in urban settings, which is the kind of setting I grew up in. And as a woman — and a woman of color — I do bring a different perspective to the work. At the end of the day, I think I bring a level of commitment and a sense of urgency to the work that is genuine and somewhat unique. PND: Several of the largest foundations in the U.S. today, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, and the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, are led by women. Is that a sign that equality of opportunity, for both women and women of color, has been secured? LMT: I don’t look at it quite that way. You know, we speak a lot about the significance of having an African American in the White House, but I don’t really see it as a sign. I see it as one more transaction, albeit a very positive one, in a long process. We’ve come a long way, and it’s important that women are being developed and that people of color are being given these opportunities, but I also

Three generations of CEO's, Russ Mawby (term May 1970 - Feb. 2, 1996), La June Montgomery Tabron (term effective Jan. 1, 2014) and Sterling K. Speirn (term Jan. 1, 2006 - Dec. 31, 2013).

believe we have a long way to go in terms of leveling the playing field for both women and people of color. In some ways, I think of myself as a person who was in the right place at the right time, in that the field was not diverse when I came into it and there weren’t very many women on a career track to this kind of position. In that sense, it’s a long-term pipeline issue we’re dealing with, and I just happened to have been fortunate enough to have been with this organization for twenty-six years and to be given opportunities that allowed me to grow and develop leadership skills that put me in a position to take on this role. PND: Several years ago the Kellogg Foundation announced a new strategy that combines a commitment to racial equity, community engagement, and leadership with three goals — “educated kids,” “healthy kids,” and “secure families.” It’s an approach that is directly linked to, and complementary to, the foundation’s embrace of place- and community-based strategies. Can you talk a little about how and where the approaches intersect? LMT: They are definitely linked. As the foundation has learned more about this kind of work, we’ve seen how the work that happens at the national level needs to be anchored in communities. Our approach really is to find practical applications at the local level for work that happens at the national level, and vice versa — our founder, Will Keith Kellogg, believed strongly in the idea that it is the practical application of knowledge that allows change to happen.

Our framework is based on that idea. We take ideas and best practices from our work at the national level and validate them by making sure they can be practically applied in a community context, where we refine and strengthen them and feed them back into our national work. PND: Does that mean the Kellogg Foundation’s work in your four geographical focus areas — New Mexico, Mississippi, Michigan, and New Orleans — is likely to be scaled to other communities in the future? LMT: Yes, we do believe the work we are doing and testing in those places can serve as models that are applied more broadly. For example, we are supporting a program at Clemson University called Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) that encourages young males of color to go into the teaching profession and, after they graduate, to return to their communities and become teachers and role models in those communities. It is definitely our hope that as we perfect that model, it is scaled across the country. PND: In a recent Q&A with PND, your predecessor, Sterling Speirn, described the WKKF Community Leadership Network initiative that you launched in November as “different” because it emphasizes “not just individual leadership work, but the connective work that unites each cohort of fellows, with the goal of developing not just individual leaders but networks of leaders.” How do you hope to do that? LMT: Sterling is exactly right. What we are realizing is that leaders are more suc-

40 HOUSTON BUSINESS CONNECTIONS - www.thebulletinboard.biz -

cessful when they are embedded in support structures. It’s the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. So the entire program is going to be focused on how you take leaders who are very capable individually and build networks around them that give them access to resources, knowledge, and skills that actually enhance their ability to drive the change that they are looking to make. The entire structure of the leadership program is based on the concept of networking and the synergies to be gained from many like-minded people working together and supporting each other. The other point is that leadership — and building leaders and community — is a way of sustaining the work of the Kellogg Foundation long beyond our actual presence in that community. We know at the end of the day that the most important investment we can make is in people, and helping to develop capable leaders in communities is what will enable those communities to thrive. PND: The Kellogg Foundation is one of ten foundations that recently pledged an additional $200 million over five years to President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative. You were instrumental in developing the foundation’s strategic focus on the educational achievements of young men of color through your earlier placebased work in New Orleans and Mississippi. In your view, what is the most important thing we can do to improve access to educational opportunity and success for young men of color? LMT: We’ve listed five areas that we

believe must be addressed if young males of color are to succeed. Most of them are tied to the educational system, with early childhood education number one on the list. We also need to make sure that young men of color are career- and-collegeready when they come out of the K-12 system, and we’re looking at literacy, the criminal justice system, and employment opportunities for these young men. Interestingly, the Kellogg Foundation has been working in all of these areas over the last twenty or thirty years. All of them are important, and we know that no single institution can tackle them alone, which is why we’ve decided to collaborate with other foundations, business, and the public sector to address them. PND: Should we also be focusing on education for girls, especially STEM subjects in the early grades? What role might philanthropy play in addressing the gender gap in STEM fields? LMT: Our national work is focused on all children. We are very much committed to the idea that all children should have opportunities that enable them to thrive. So while there is a particular focus on young males of color, over the years we’ve also focused on other groups, including girls and STEM education. We don’t see this as a zero-sum game. At the Kellogg Foundation, we believe that any and all resources that are targeted to improve the lives of children are resources well spent. PND: I’d like to switch to a different topic. In addition to your ongoing support for the New Economy Initiative and other revitalization efforts in southeastern Michigan, the Kellogg Foundation recently committed $40 million to a “rescue fund” for Detroit. What motivated you and your colleagues to make that kind of sizable investment in the future of a city that many people would say doesn’t have a future? LMT: Detroit is a city where we’ve had programming for decades, and we remain very much committed to the city. That said, we were very keen on this particular investment because we saw it as an opportunity to invest in the creativity and passion of people committed to saving the city. We care about Detroit, and we hope, and believe, that the revitalization of Detroit is

happening. At the same time, we know that distractions related to the city’s bankruptcy filing is affecting those revitalization efforts, and we believe that the rescue fund is an important element in the larger plan to get the city back on track and make sure the revitalization efforts we have invested in, and will continue to invest in, bear fruit. PND: As someone who grew up in Detroit, you must have some thoughts about what the city needs to get back on its feet. Would you care to share them with us? LMT: Yes, I do. It starts with supporting families and a caring community. You know, my ideas about Detroit are the same ideas I have about Jackson, Mississippi, or about Doña Ana, New Mexico, about any place where children are growing up, and the kind of love and support they need to thrive, and the kind of institutions that contribute to their success all along the way, and the kind of economy that creates good jobs for parents so that they can support their children and have the resources to help them thrive. We’re working hard every day to make sure that Detroit and other communities get these resources. PND: Both national and local foundations are involved in the rescue fund. Can you talk a little bit about the different role local foundations might play, and why it’s important for philanthropy to be involved? LMT: Philanthropy has a unique role to play. We’re not the government, and we’re not private industry. We have a greater level of flexibility. In an ideal situation, the assets controlled by foundations, and philanthropy in general, should be risk capital; they should be used to test and scale ideas that the other two sectors cannot or will not fund. The rescue fund for Detroit is an example of risk taking, leadership, and collaboration. It demonstrates how collaboration in philanthropy can work, how we don’t have to compete, how we can actually complement and strengthen each other’s work. And what’s particularly important in the Detroit situation is that none of the investments from the foundations as it relates to the bankruptcy will be taken from their existing investments or commitments to the city. PND: It’s Women’s History Month. What would you say to the women in our

audience? LMT: Well, we all know that women play a very impor¬tant role in society, particularly in the African-American community. And I think in terms of how we build a stronger society, it’s important to continue to lift that up. We have to make sure we continue to acknowledge the importance of working together, and the importance of women as leaders. PND: You mentioned that women are particularly important in the African-American community. In what way? LMT: The matriarch of the family is particularly important in African-American communities. And if you think about what’s happening in society right now, where too many African-American males are absent from their families, the role of the matriarch, and women in general, is more important than ever. PND: I’d like to end by asking you what your ambitions for the foundation over the next three to five years are. If I were to sit down with you in five years and asked you what the foundation had accomplished since the last time we spoke, what would you hope you’d be able to say? LMT: In five years I would like the foundation to have focused on early childhood development and to have influenced funding so that all children in our priority places have access to early quality child care. Also, in five years the foundation will have developed a strong reputation in the field as an organization that promotes rapid action for children. We have studied enough. We have research and data and now we need to use it. I feel like we have been talking for way too long; it's time for decisive action. Early childhood development is one area and disparities in achievement for young males of color is another. In five years I expect to see young men of color beginning to thrive in school and many reforms in the criminal justice system. PND features editor Kyoko Uchida spoke with Tabron in early March. LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling has stirred up the hornet’s nest By Bobby Stanton Communication Specialist He’s the man America loves to hate. Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling walked up to the hornet’s nest with a bat and gave it his best shot. He succeeded in stirring up a chorus of anger that has resulted in him being banned for life from the NBA and fined $2.5 million. In a secretly recorded chat with his girlfriend V. Stiviano last September, the real estate mogul told her not to bring black people to his games, including Magic Johnson. "It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people," he said on the tape. "You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want," but "the little I ask you is ... not to bring

them to my games." Adding insult to injury, Sterling went on CNN to apologize but ended up offending many people with racially charged allegations against Magic Johnson and other African Americans. In the interview, he denied he was a racist. Fallout from Sterling’s racist rant was instantaneous on social media, especially Twitter and Facebook. Ervin Magic Johnson was one of the first to hop on Twitter, commenting, “Commissioner Silver showed great leadership in banning LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life.” LeBron James, also on Twitter, praised the NBA’s decision, saying, "Commissioner Silver thank you for protecting our beautiful and powerful league!!"Great leader!!” And from Kobe Bryant: “Bravo Silver.” Likewise, folks on Facebook had no shortage of opinions about Sterling’s inner barometer.

LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling has stirred up the hornet’s nest Editor’s note: The response to this article has been phenomenal. Here are some additional comments from Facebook that did not make it into the final story. Leo Lauzon: Bobby I believe there are a bunch of closet racist. Look at the Tea Party and their agenda. Don't have to go too terribly far. They've never come out and said it but their actions sure show it

Dexter Wade: I certainly do! Although they won't admit it every white person has been in a room with all white people and have heard

the banter that came from Sterling’s mouth. I believe those are the ones who think what he said was " not so bad" or justifying him by saying he was "set up" or bring freedom of speech into the argument. But this sadly is not a post racial society. It's a undercover and systematic racist society.

Dodie Hawbaker: Donald Sterling did NOT have the cajones to say it publicly... he was privately recorded! Yes, there are far too many people with superior attitudes and beliefs and they constantly attempt to hide behind religion, money, and power. Too many in society accept these people's facades because of religion, money or power and they mostly are privileged white males, or

58 HOUSTON BUSINESS CONNECTIONS - www.thebulletinboard.biz -

white males that believe they belong to the privileged group.

Leo Lauzon: I listened to Magic Johnson speak out last night for the first time . Finally heard the whole story and all I can say is the NBA commissioner did the right thing. D Sterling is a manipulative racist.

Robert Marsh: We ALL say things about other people and other groups of people when we feel we are in the company of those we consider "safe". And many times what we say may not even be our own sentiment, but rather, what we know to be the sentiment of those "safe" folks in our presence. This Sterling character I do not know,

and nothing that he has said or done has affected me personally. IF he or someone else were to say something like this in my presence, then I would probably feel the need to address it. Sterling only has local effects not national.

Dexter Wade: But the implication of sterlings feelings affects everyone. Shoot it has for 34 weeks now.

Myra A. Jolivet: I think it doesn't actually matter. Personal feelings belong no further than your living room. In a professional setting in which you have influence over the careers of others, the professional takes on a neutrality. For example, if

Robert Marsh: Ok folks. Right now, I mean the very moment you are reading this comment, there are hundreds of thousands of comments being made verbally and online about people of your ilk. Knowing this, but not knowing them, how does that impact you personally? I mean...REALLY! Again, we STILL haven't learned to PICKING OUR FREAKING BATTLES!!!!!!!!!

Dexter Wade: Truth is there is a system of white supremacy in this country that is and has always been alive and well. It feed off those personal conversations and comments made all over. That guy who was throwing rocks at people at sit ins is the same guy who now sits at a district court seat. He makes policy and determines how interpretation of law swings. His sons and daughter make their innermost teaching from those conversations know in how they handle hiring firing and dealing with blacks in the work place. They don't leave it on the doorstep at home. He is also the cop that profiles and passes racist jokes on the job. And to think that doesn't exist is not to have had a very "candid" conversation with a white person or live black in America. Especially poor and black.

Sharon Norman: I think every 80 plus year old is racist. An older black man is probably the biggest racist on this planet. If he isn't he has a right to be. Was called boy as a man and was the only real

Beverly James Owens

Herbert Matthew Carmon Jr: It's certainly disgusting, but having been born in the 50s and grew up in the 60s it happened all the time. I didn't like it then and of course, I totally detest it. He brought the war on and now he has to battle it!

Deborah Stanton Burke

Neil Wilson: His comments come from his feelings of inadequacy, an older man with a lot of money and a big ego. his girlfriend is many many years younger, he wants to believe she wants him for him and she' s hanging out with young vibrant ball players. he goes ballistic and starts talking dodo.

Neil Wilson: I agree with Dexter there has been a system of white supremacy in place for hundreds of years. back in the sixties this would have been normal, the very fact that this incident is going viral speaks to the fact that white supremacy is crumbling. they are running scared and will resort to desperation so we can expect much worse.

Gregory Kay: Racism is learned behavior. Taught by most racist.

Sharon Norman: Your comment is so true. The teachers are not disguising themselves with hoods any longer.

Brenda Else

Eddie Mcneil

David Schiesl: Of course people think things they wont say out loud but to discipline and restrain and correct oneself is a sign you are trying to be what is right.

man at the time. Just saying, leave him He is ignorant and you can and can't fault people for being ignorant. I know very intelligent people that did not know that black people tanned. This is why people need exposure and instead of black people focusing on his ignorance, we should be in the schools trying to keep our kids from living up to what other races think about them. I don't think we should ignore it but we also should consider the source.

Leo Lauzon

the boss is a republican, should he or she malign democrats at the office? Personal preferences are not for the office. Business is business.

Albert Fonteno: I really think Donald Sterling statements are more from ignorance than racism even though wrong they are....it is more due to sensitivity (the outrage) than anything else...see when you pay the amount is money to minorities that Donald Sterling does when your return has been limited at best it's impossible to have minorities run your organization year after year...his general manager was black when the NBA didn't have many, his team's are predominantly black yr after yr....but his circle is white and rich which is where he is speaking from...at 80 he is speaking from an era where that's what he was taught being ridiculously rich only reinforced his teachings because let's face it there is not a lot of minorities in that income bracket...he hasn't had a lot of sensitivity training...all he does is sign checks, make business decisions, and stay in his circle..What he believes is his choice like whatever any. Person believes is theirs....see Bobby we all have choices....if his remarks are really that insulting to anyone who works for him....then don't work fir him..if you wanna make a statement then you don't suit up, you don't coach, you don't go to

the games, you don't run concessions stands, you don't do anything to associate yourself with his business...because they are only statements..he has done nothing(provable) to convict him of discrimination....ever major corporations in this world is represented. Disappropriately...see the average American minority will give up a job and file discrimination because they have a case...you don't have a case when you making 20 mil, 10 mil, 5 mil, etc....You just work for an ignorant asshole...if we wanna fault Donald then we have to fault some of our own for there remarks that's been said behind and in front of doors...he thinks minorities should stay outta his space he is no different than a whole lotta folks he just got heard on TV.

Bill Jeffreys: I believe all of us carry some stereotype baggage. The more astute folks realize this and set bags down, and then walk on.

Sabrina Grant: Yes there are others that think like him, they just have sense enough not to speak it .

60 HOUSTON BUSINESS CONNECTIONS - www.thebulletinboard.biz -

Stephanie Nwadiei: This is Amerikkk. I am sure a lot of people feel like him but are smart enough to not have it recorded. He has power, because of his money. I am sure he feels that he is better than most people, no matter what race.

Mike Martin: When I was a state representative I got death threats for being the only white official to walk in a MLK march. It's unfortunately alive and well in Texas.

Regina Guy: Of course! There are so many closet racist that would have their jobs or their friends or maybe even their church pissed at them. So they keep it quiet. They are cowards for not standing up for what they think is right and what they think should be their beliefs system...They're just a bunch of (expletive deleted)!!!

Eddie Mcneil: Racism still exist in society, its subtle like Obama hatred. They want to end Affirmative Action. There’s no love for minorities.

Josephine Tinker: Racism and Poverty are Running neck to neck at this time in history.

Bret Mader: As a white man I can personally say that racism is still alive. Some white people say nigger in front of me because they think i feel the same way. I wasn't raised to hate. I only use that horrible word in context. I listen with a third ear just as Joe Madison asked. I can seek out and oust these racists because they won't see it coming. I'm your white knight brother. Love is love.

Deborah Stanton Burke: White people 85 and older probably feel the same way as Donald Sterling but just don't express their views in public.

Beverly James Owens: Yes Bobby there are others who think and feel like that ass. Some rich, some poor.

Lucian Payne: The comments from this idiot are not isolated. There are many folks who have the same

Regina Guy

Larry Johnson: Bottom line is he espoused racist remarks and there have to be consequences. It is politically incorrect. Had a player made inflammatory racist remarks believe me the player would pay, figuratively and financially. The organization that Sterling belongs to (The NBA) has rules and its commissioner has ruled. Sterling says he will not pay the fine nor sell the team. Therefore the organization (the owners) will have to put up or shut up. If they do not vote him out and take away all rights including dissolving the team or reassigning all of its players then they will be exposed of endorsing his stance by default. Yes on the surface the whole thing about an old man saying racist things may seem trivial but its attached to something a lot bigger. Either we play by the rules and obey all the laws or we don’t. It seems to me that goes for both sides.

Dexter Wade

Brenda Else: There are a lot of people who think, feel, and speak these hurtful statements. Some people go as far as acting according to their beliefs while others practice their beliefs in secret, kkk modernized.

Mike Marsh

Wally Spence

Larry Johnson

Stephanie Nwadiei

Wally Spence: Great question. The deal is we all know racism exist not a shock to me at all this was said, I don't believe he wanted it to go public. But since it did Donald let us know where he stands on his beliefs. Now we know how to deal with him we have choices now. As a race we have come a long way due to some heroic men and women who were willing to give their life for and did. Not only the ones we know in history books but our own mother & fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles who also made the sacrifices as well . I remember the stories my dad told me about all the racism he ensued as a NFL player in the late fifties and sixties...I told him I will not have it I was young & strong-minded but naïve. My father said you won't go through

Laila Haskins-Yava: No offense Bobby, but, I personally don't give a flyin' rat’s behind.

Lucian Payne

Steven Long: It's all too true, Bobby. There remains a remnant of the plantation mentality among certain classes of whites - mostly in the lower education strata. The good news? The rest have finally learned better.

what I did because we have done this for you to have a better life I suspect you will have deeper issues then He just smiled and made one of the most profound statements to me and walked away ; there are two types of men in the world one who scratch his butt and one who scratch his head. Confused yes sir. I was saying all of this to say racism is at its highest level it's not hidden it's not in disguise it's fact. Blacks have the sixth largest GNP in the world which means we spend a lot if money, but we are next to the lowest paid per capita which means 22% less than whites 31% less than Asian slightly higher than Hispanics. This tells me that there is still racism, but we have work to do we own less business. We own less degrees, we own less properties, we have less CEO's, we save less money, we invest less. The generation we live in today I feel do not have issue with racism. It's the older generation who keep pulling us down this road. In the move "guess who coming to dinner." Sidney Poitier told he's dad " you look as yourself as a black man I look at myself as a man so get off our back and let us move forward" So again this it's not a shock and I thank Donald Sterling for and eye opener and I would say to all the racist old folk " get off our back so we can be a better nation". As for us Main Street employees to collectively change the game we fail to play.

Josephine Tinker

racist views/mindset that this fool harbors. When it comes to the discussion of race in this country, we run away from it. Very sad. I have to move on and I can't consume my life with racism. It is not going away anytime soon, at all. Colorblind society? A joke. We must see Color. Wake up. Wake up.
