FREEDOM & INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATING “OUR”

“I’m Ben Hall and I am asking for your vote.”

RESOLUTION: VOTE EARLY: October 19th-30th, 2015 ELECTION DAY: Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

“My commitment to you as mayor will be to improve our streets, improve public safety, and protect our neighborhoods. That is the only way that our city can move forward” - BEN HALL

"Ben Hall is independent enough to do the right thing...” -- Rev. Ingram

Support for Ben Hall Continues to Grow... Dr. F.N. Williams has Endorsed Ben Hall for Mayor

Recently, legendary Acres Homes' leader, Dr. F. N. Williams, Sr., a man who walked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during the civil rights struggle, announced his endorsement of Ben Hall for Houston Mayor. Dr. Williams, a person whose name is synonymous with Acres Homes and a fighter for justice in this city, said his decision to support Hall was easy given Ben Hall's demonstrated commitment to the community. Dr. Williams said, "I have been impressed with Ben

Hall for more than 20 years. He is a husband, father and great businessman. He is an excellent lawyer and will fight for the citizens like he does in court. I am confident he will make a superb Mayor and will continue to fight for all the people of Houston." BEN HALL: “Dr. William's endorsement of our campaign is significant. His reputation throughout the Acres Homes community and City will help move our campaign forward.

Reverend Charles Ingram has Endorsed Ben Hall in the 2015 Race for Mayor of Houston, Texas

Another Acres Home leader has announced his support for the Ben Hall for Mayor campaign. Rev. Charles Ingram, who has been a leader in the Acres Homes community for years, announced his personal endorsement of Ben Hall for Mayor. Ingram insisted that Hall was the best choice because, "He is independent enough to do the right thing and bring improvements, growth and businesses to the Acres Homes area that have been missing." He continued, "We need more than good speeches. We want to see a mayor who wants to help the entire community. I be-

REV. INGRAM

lieve Ben Hall is that person. That is why I am supporting him!" Ben Hall said he is "humbled" by the outpouring of support he is receiving from all communities in the city. He likened Rev. Ingram and Dr. F. N. Williams Sr's endorsements as significant because they show that his candidacy is connecting with real problems that Houstonians have been facing for many years. "I am humbled by Rev. Ingram's brave endorsement and will work every day as mayor to continue to earn his support," Hall said.

“Join me in voting for Ben Hall”

Don’t forget to cast your vote for Ben Hall in the race for Mayor of Houston in the upcoming election. First Day of Early Voting for the Tuesday, November 3, 2015 City of Houston Mayoral Election is: Monday, October 19, 2015. The Last Day of Early Voting is: Friday, October 30, 2015.

A friend will tell you Ben Hall is a person of great character and integrity. Rev. William "Bill" Lawson reminds me that reputation is what people think of you and character is who you are. Ben Hall has a great reputation and is known large and wide for his largess and for what he has done for those we consider the least in our community...That largess means a lot to the people I represent. He has represented the least, the last and the lost and he has earned a great reputation for it. Ben has demonstrated to me his character. Character is who you really are. I have been there in quiet moments when we have had to make some crucial decisions that affect the lives of others and I can tell you that in every moment when Benjamin had an opportunity to be of service to someone in need he always displayed the character necessary to stand up for the people who can’t stand up for themselves. He’s a person of character.

By Aubrey R. Taylor Publisher of Houston Business Connections Newspaper and Magazine

NDEPENDENCE DAY IS COMING! A lot of people think of Juneteenth as simply a Texas holiday. Are you one of them? Well, you’re wrong. Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated and recognized all over the world. If you don’t believe me, just go to your trusted internet search engine and do a keyword search for it. What you’ll find is that there are people who celebrate Juneteenth as far away as: Nigeria, Afghanistan, Seoul South Korea, Japan, Canada, Honduras, Ghana, Israel, Taiwan, Germany, Jerusalem, Italy, Puerto Rico and many other far-away-places. This edition of Houston Business Connections Magazine is made possible by a few of the sponsors and supporters of Aubrey R. Taylor Communication to recognize, salute, and thank many of the people who have found value in, supporting the Juneteenth Holiday throughout Texas and beyond. Did you know that America now has two Independence Days? Well, mainstream media didn’t give much attention to the bi-partisan support the United States Senators gave to establishing Juneteenth Independence Day as a National Day of Observance by passing U.S. (SENATE RESOLUTION) S.R. 474 sponsored by former United States Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), with over 40 co-sponsors back on Saturday, June 14, 2014. So, with this edition, we’re taking a moment to thank the United Senators who played a role in marking this milestone in the history of our great nation through their bi-partisan acknowledgement of our nation’s rise from “one of enslavement” to “one of freedom” for all her citizens. To this end, I implore all Americans to find value in our independence, and the many freedoms we enjoy as “FREE PEOPLE” as we prepare to demonstrate our individual and collective patriotism by recognizing the “2015 CELEBRATIONS” of the “19th of June” and the “4th of July”together.

Whereas news of the end of slavery did not reach the frontier areas of the United States, in particular the State of Texas and other Southwestern States, until months after the conclusion of the Civil War, more than 2 1/2 years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863; Whereas, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were free;

Whereas African-Americans who had been slaves in the Southwest celebrated June 19, commonly known as 'Juneteenth Independence Day', as inspiration and encouragement for future generations; Whereas African-Americans from the Southwest, for nearly 150 years, have continued the tradition of observing 'Juneteenth Independence Day';

Whereas 43 States, the District of Columbia, and other countries, have designated 'Juneteenth Independence Day' as a special day of observance in recognition of the emancipation of all slaves in the United States; Whereas 'Juneteenth Independence Day' celebrations have been held to honor African-American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures;

Whereas the faith and strength of character demonstrated by former slaves and their descendants remain an example for all people of the United States, regardless of background, religion, or race; Whereas slavery was not officially abolished until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in January 1865; Whereas Frederick Douglass, born in the State of Maryland in 1818, escaped from slavery and became a leading writer, orator, publisher, and one of the United States' most influential advocates for abolitionism and the equality of all people;

Whereas Frederick Douglass was recognized for his accomplishments with a statue that was unveiled during a ceremony on June 19, 2013, in Emancipation Hall of the United States Capitol; Whereas 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. 2000a et seq.), signed into law on July 2, 1964, a milestone in providing equal protections for AfricanAmericans, including former slaves and their descendants; and

Resolved, That the Senate -

GALVESTON COUNTY

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston origin in 1865,

the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and empha-

sizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in America long overdue. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today. Sensitized to the conditions and experiences of others, only then can we make significant and lasting improvements in our society.
