Smooth transitions Equipped with a full kitchen, bathroom, laundry room and bar, the owners didn’t want their guests to have to run back to the main house, once they had set up camp for the day. “We have every amenity so that when we are down here, we can enjoy ourselves as host and hostess,” says the owner. Mechanically, the group of people the owners put together to spearhead this project had a real challenge from the start. “We sit between a petroleum gas line and a natural gas line, and we had to slip it right in between the two,” the homeowner explains. Having worked with the couple before, designer Elise Denver was brought in to design the pool house and achieve the couple’s overall vision. The bathroom/ changing room is wall to wall chic. In an effort to create an upscale spa like feel, stylish European faucets and fixtures were selected in bright chrome. A custom vessel sink bowl is made of stone with a mosaic sun pattern in metallic gold. Tiles in the shower appear like grasscloth, giving the room an organic earthy feel. Additionally, glass tile accents were interspersed to loan a touch of bling that the client desired. Dark wood cabinetry, which includes lockers for guests, is a great contrast to the lighter tile colors. Timber frame construction gives the pool house a lodge feel, while a Feng Shui layout creates a soothing atmosphere. Although Feng Shui wasn’t in the designer’s mind at the onset of the project, the elements were all present, and it eventually evolved into that. “All of the materials that we used indoors are with respect to water,” explains Denver. “The floor is stained concrete, the baseboards are ceramic, and even the walls are made with a product that is impervious to water.” Floor drains were added to allow for a quick hose-down and cleaning.

out Denver. “They have driftwood and stone, which are things you would find near the ocean.” A concrete hearth adds to the upscale spa feel, and the legs on the fireplace, mantle, and kitchen cabinets were constructed of zebrawood. “This is a huge focal point because when you sit by the pool at night, you see the pool’s fiber optic lighting, and the fireplace burning in the background,” adds Denver. Pool lights rotate through a bevy of colors, making

the water change shades. Glass tiles line the edge of the pool and radiate rainbow iridescence. Gas powered fire bowls and torches have been strategically placed in, and around, the pool. “At the same time you can see their hot tub with a huge pit of fire, so you are met with this spectacular presentation,” says the designer. “With the flames, lighting, and perfect landscaping, you feel like you have come to an elegant resort.” continued >

The pool, which is lined with iridescent glass tiles, includes a beach entry and an area for swimming laps. OPPOSITE: Concrete is a contributing factor in the pool house and was used to create the floors, kitchen countertops and fireplace hearth. Fire and ice The fireplace surround is made up of a mixture of stone and bronze. “Those stones are simulating sea stone,” points

Instead of patio doors, the couple installed glass Nana walls that, in the warm weather, open up to connect the inside and outside. They were carefully designed with a threshold that blends into the concrete, catching all water deposits, and eliminating any sort of tripping hazard. There is forced heat and air-conditioning, and floors have radiant heat to keep feet warm after a dip in the pool.

Aquatic oasis The pool incorporates both a lap-pool and a wading area where water gradually deepens, much like at the beach. Dyed concrete was poured around the pool, and then scored to make it look like giant, 24-inch tiles. Walls on the outside of the pool house are also poured concrete. “This

place is built like a fortress,” laughs the owner. All systems are computerized and can be operated electronically from any location. The owner can turn on heaters,

lighting, and entertainment systems right from his iPhone and is even able to light up torches before he arrives home. He also went to extensive safety measures and installed Sonaguard to prevent any type of accident. “If someone falls in when no one is in the pool, even a dog, then alarms go off as soon as the water is penetrated,” he explains. “At night it makes for great security.” The owner loves grilling, and gives his Kalamazoo gourmet grill a good workout, all year long. Although he’s not known for being much of a swimmer, he is known for being an impeccable host. “He is one of these guys that wants to see everyone have a good time,” smiles his wife. “Even when he’s off in a corner smoking a cigar, if everyone is enjoying themselves then he’s happy.” With beautiful steaks sizzling, fine wines flowing, and torches blazing, this is indeed a happy place to be.

Making a commitment With only one original wall remaining to preserve its historic integrity, Al rebuilt the house in Historic Deutschtown from the ground up. But he didn’t enter into this decision lightly. Like many others who had seen the house, he debated whether it was worth the cost. “The first time I looked at it, I looked at it like everyone else—was it worth repairing?” But Al, who at the time lived a few streets away, wanted the location. “The idea was, now I can put everything I want into a home,” he explains. The project, from breaking ground to putting on the finishing touches, took about ten months. Al knows a thing or two about renovating older homes. As the co-owner of October Development, a Pittsburgh-based contractor, he has worked on projects that have helped revitalize other Pittsburgh neighborhoods. continued >

Bob Baumbach was the architect involved with this project. Baumbach lives on the same street and had worked with Al on other restoration projects. Baumbach says that the crew made a commitment to preserve the redeeming qualities of the original façade, such as the door surround, which includes the original transom window and decorative brackets, and the box gutter, cornice and brackets. They also added a Victorian-like mansard roof. “You really get the details of the 1880s into a brand new house.” This, says Baumbach, allows the house to fit contextually into the neighborhood.

A personal side The inside, though, is as modern as can be. The house has a clean and open-air feeling to it. The renovation brought the square footage up from 1,200 feet to a much more comfortable 3,000 feet. The threestory home now has four bathrooms, two

bedrooms, two sitting areas and a kitchen and dining area. Rather than being meticulously planned out, the interior design unfolded as the project was underway. “We didn’t know how it was going to look until it was done,” recalls Al. One idea, though, that had always been in the forefront was the incorporation of water features. “I have a fondness for water features, for the sound and serenity they bring with it,” Al says. The first water feature is in the downstairs crevice near the main entrance. Walk up the stairs and you will see a larger-than-life “77/54” streetcar mural, in homage to Al’s fond childhood memories of riding that streetcar through the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. building trends Creating character Continue on to the second floor to see the amazing “brick” grottoes hanging regally over the living area. Each grotto is a selfcontained trough; a switch turns them into weeping walls. Josh Parise, manager and head designer for Pittsburgh Pond and Stone Company, was instrumental in helping Al with much of the interior design, including all of the water features, the streetcar mural and the grottoes. Parise jokes that he was responsible for anything that was “overly artistic and bizarre.” Over a period of months, Parise painstakingly hand-carved and hand-painted the faux bricks. “We wanted everything to look like it was 100 years old and to match the existing chimney and remaining brick wall. The bricks are all façade and cement overlay—but the closer you get to the ‘brick,’ the more real it looks,” says Parise. Adorning the impressively high grottoes is a stained-glass window; look closely, and you will notice that it depicts an image of a streetcar; also Parise’s work. Inserted into the upper nooks of the grottoes are replicas of streetcar tokens, one from the 1920s and one from the 1950s. In addition to the streetcar motif, Pittsburgh’s industrial history is reflected by the iron sculpture prominently hanging between floors, also designed by Parise and constructed entirely of locally milled steel. “It looks like a church in an underground trolley station,” Parise says of the space. There are a lot of soft curves as opposed to sharp edges, in comparison to most homes. “Everything I could curve, I curved, including walls and the balcony,” says Al. “It adds softness to the place, along with the iron, steel and glass. Al’s fondness for water extends to the back yard, which has two self-contained fountains. Several gargoyles greet visitors (gargoyles are noticeable throughout the interior as well); in addition, planters made of unique found materials such as pickle jars and chimney caps are prominently displayed. “Al is very eclectic,” Parise says. “He’s really cool to work for. Once he trusts you, he trusts you completely.” Lauren Cohen and Tom Taylor, owners of Farmhouse Design Studio, installed the plants and trees. “Al wanted us to create an Asian garden with a contemporary influence,” Cohen says. “Our goal was to make sure the garden looked as if it had been there forever.” Cohen and Taylor installed a mixture of ornamental grasses, perennials and two large Japanese maples to complement the bubblers, statuary and raised flower beds that are lined with stones.

A changing city The city-wide trend for renaissance is reaching some formerly blue collar neighborhoods, including Historic Deutschtown, also known as East Allegheny. The name is a nod to German settlers who came to the region in the 18th century. The neighborhood is home to about 700 households. Al says there are about a half dozen homes per year in the neighborhood that are renovated. Each renovation seems to maintain the old-world feeling of the community. “I think Al’s house is very personalized. It was like his empty canvas and he put all the bells and whistles and whimsical details in it that he may have ever wanted,” says Baumbach.

“I’m not a homebody per se; I do very little entertaining, and I am out a whole lot more than I am in,” Al says. “A home is a place for me to be comfortable when I need to be comfortable, to relax when I need to relax, and to be spiritual when I need to be spiritual. When I’m here, I’m home. I’m comfortable. I don’t wish I were somewhere else.”

All of our experts highly recommend the Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis). Terrific under trees, this plant tolerates dry shade. Evergreen foliage remains perky throughout the winter. Flowers appear in winter, lasting through spring.

Steve Foltz, director of horticulture at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, praises Purple Smoke false indigo (Baptisia ‘Purple Smoke’), a native plant for full sun. It grows a three-foot, tight round mound of fine textured blue-green foliage. Showy flower spikes shoot above the foliage in May. “This is one of the best—if not the best—Baptisia on the market,” he says.

Chris Jensen, horticulturist at Wegerzyn Gardens MetroPark in Dayton, likes crocus. He especially likes the late-winter blooming Crocus thomasinianus, which are affectionately known as “tommies.” This crocus species is famous for being squirrel resistant and self-sowing. “It spreads like crazy,” Chris says.

Wine as art Kevin and Tammy McCarl incorporated their passion for collecting wine into the design of their downtown condo. “My husband has been collecting wine for 30 years,” Tammy says. “He used to have 1,000 bottles, but they were always stored away, where no one saw them.” Instead of creating a designated wine room, the McCarls, along with the help of interior designer Randy Snell, decided to turn the collection into the focal point of their family room. “They had this large empty wall that was the perfect place to create a one-of-akind wine storage unit,” says Snell. The metal racking system, from Rose Hill Wine Cellars, holds 500 bottles. Since the McCarls collect young wines, refrigeration wasn’t a major concern. The center of the wall showcases larger magnums and dessert wines, while the sides of the unit can hold up to three bottles deep—perfect for storing some of owners’ favorite vintages. “We narrowed the collection down to our favorite wines,” Tammy says. “We collect mostly heavy, bold California wines. Cabernet is a favorite, but we also have some Pinos and Zinfandels.” To blend in with the contemporary surroundings, Snell lined the wall behind the racking system with Phillip Jeffries’ Rock Star wallcovering. At night, when the LED lights are turned on, the silver dots of the paper shimmer against the dark bottles. The perimeter is covered in ebony cork wallcovering, also from Phillip Jeffries. “There are little flakes of silver in the cork, which tie back into the iridescent look of the wall,” Snell adds. The wine wall has become quite the conversation piece when guests visit. “People gaze at the wall, they start looking at the labels and usually come across a wine they recognize,” Tammy says. “We love how the wall ties the entire room together. It has definitely finished off the look of our home.” continued >

Anything but simple The owners of this cellar used to store their collection in four wine refrigerators. “We lived in a condo in Mt. Washington and had the refrigerators in various rooms,” the homeowner recalls. After the couple married, they purchased a home nestled on nine acres in Rosslyn Farms. During the renovation process, contractor Saverio Strati, of Avanti Construction, suggested adding a wine cellar to the basement. “I wasn’t expecting anything extraordinary, just a chilled room to store my collection,” the husband says. “The end result far exceeded my expectations.” Strati, along with interior designer Pat Kann, understood the owner’s desires and needs. “He would have been happy with a simple room, but his collection needed to be seen,” Strati says. “Pat and the owner’s wife made sure the cellar complemented the home’s exquisite contemporary aura.” The cellar, which can hold up to 1,400 bottles, is located in a once-unexcavated portion of the basement. An external cooling system keeps the room chilled at 53 degrees. The cellar boasts redwood wine racks that hold various bottle sizes, from standard Bordeaux bottles, to magnums and splits. favorite wines if they choose. “One of our favorite wines come from Lewis Cellars,” the husband adds. “The California vineyard is owned by race car driver Randy Lewis. He doesn’t make a bad bottle, regardless of what kind you enjoy.” The homeowners also have an impressive collection of modern art—an element that was infused into the design of the wine cellar.
