General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable standard. Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service. First Class accommodation with an excellent range of facilities and services. Accommodation in this rating is considered among the best in the country. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your Travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation to best suit your needs. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your Travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suits you and your family’s needs. 1

Singapore, Malaysia & Borneo These three destinations offer a kaleidoscope of sights and experiences. The happenings in the urban landscapes have your senses on overload as you beat the feet and explore. Inhale the appetite-enhancing street food aromas, listen to people chat in their local tongue and tilt your head up to see architecture that astounds you. Shopping is easy, with everything from markets to malls. Heading to the less populated areas results in more natural surroundings that are filled with wildlife, some that are unique to the area. The history of these places is a blend of many nations, as is the cuisine, with influences from east to west. You will be guaranteed to find a few spots within these Asian gems that steal your heart, whether that be a beach to yourself, a buzzing nightclub, a nook of a temple or a viewpoint of the forest, this corner of the world will have you returning.

6 Tips for your Holiday

Head to Singapore’s Orchard Road to find international big brands. Then there’s Mustafa Centre, a massive 24 hour department store reminiscent of the emporiums of old. Eight malls are found in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre alone, while 20 minutes away, there are 12 additional shopping complexes to keep you occupied. If you’re after markets, Malaysia’s Gaya Street Fair (Kota Kinabalu) is a Sunday mustdo. Arrive early - sellers are already trading by 6am.

1 / ATTENTION FOODIES In Singapore, the cooler evenings are the perfect time to sample local fare. Drop by the roadside vendors in Chinatown and head for Smith, Temple, Mosque and Pagoda Streets. Smith Street is pedestrianised and an exciting ‘Eat Street’. It’s also a great spot for tasty duck, and the Singaporean specialty, chilli cooked crab. Trying a Singapore Sling is a rite of passage for most travellers. Originating in Raffles Hotel Singapore over a century ago, frequent the Long Bar on the hotel’s second floor and sling back a Sling. In Malaysia, Penang’s Hawker Street is street food supremacy. From Char Kuay Teow to Roti Chanai, each chef showcases their own unique flavours. The options are endless and the ambience electric.

2

3 / SHOPAHOLICS BEWARE

2 / BECOME ONE WITH NATURE An oasis in Singapore, Gardens by the Bay is 250 acres filled with great sculptures and huge conservatories that entwine with fascinating flora. Explore Malaysia’s Sepilok Orangutan Rehab Centre and visit the last wild orangutans of northern Borneo. Borneo’s Mulu Caves in Sarawak’s Gunung Mulu National Park is the world’s largest cave passage and a spectacle of size and beauty. Visit the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia’s largest hill-station, with tea plantations and strawberry farms.

5 / ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL AGES Interactive and innovative, Malaysia’s Legoland has lifesize figurines, thrilling rides and quirky Lego activities. The Sunway Lagoon Park is also entertaining. In Langkawi the Sky Bridge is a 125 metre engineering wonder, you’ll feel like you’re walking in the clouds. In Singapore, you’ll find Adventure Cove WaterparkTM. As well as waterslides, highlights include an enormous lazy river, snorkelling with fish and a wave pool. Universal Studios brings the big screen to life with rides for all levels of thrill seeker. Then there’s the Singapore Flyer, a huge Ferris wheel with a stunning city backdrop.

4 / BEACHES FROM ABOVE AND BELOW In Singapore spend a day by the sea. The island resort of Sentosa plays host to the popular Tanjong Beach Club; a luxury beach club fronting the water. Boasting a huge pool, the venue’s suitable for everyone. Malaysia’s Langkawi Beaches are sandy havens that make you sigh. It’s near enough impossible to resist the perennially blue sea and platinum white sand. The water at Sipadan Island is a diver’s dream. Warm, calm and with excellent visibility, there’s a smorgasbord of marine life.

6 / FROM OLD SCHOOL TO NEW SCHOOL Nowhere more-so than Singapore does culture from the west collide quite spectacularly with the east. A melting pot of Colonial British, Chinese, Indian and Malay history. Singapore does have a conservative approach to alcohol, but it hasn’t stopped expats from opening a number of great bars. Leisurely lunches at Clarke, Robinson, and Boat Quays will mostly be a western affair, whereas Tiong Bahru Market offers a great mix of traditional delicacies. Singapore’s eclectic juxtaposition can be seen from the architecture in the sky to the food on your plate. For a cultural experience that’s 100% authentic, enquire about a homestay with Borneo locals. You’ll get to stay with a traditional family, observe their way of life and partake in many of the activities that make up their day to day.

Experience

Singapore

Known as the ‘Gateway to Asia’, Singapore is a vibrant tropical destination, world

renowned for its shopping, eateries, attractions, style and cleanliness. Whether you head there for two days or ten, you’ll find no trip to the ‘Lion City’ is ever the same. Not many cities in Asia can boast Singapore’s fascinating ethnic mix. Throughout history, migration has left its stamp on the city’s culture. Visit the bright sari and bangle stores in the old shop houses of Little India, and in Chinatown explore the many antique stores or bargain hunt for silk. For the shopaholics, Orchard Road is a must; the variety and quality here will leave you spoilt for choice. Allow plenty of time, as you’ll be lucky to see half of it in one day. With the huge developments recently around the Marina Bay area; the iconic Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer and Gardens by the Bay. Not to mention Resorts World® hosting Universal Studios Singapore®, and S.E.A. AquariumTM, it is no wonder people keep going back to this city time and time again. The river plays host to plenty of fabulous bars and restaurants in the three popular quay areas; Clarke Quay being the most famous, Boat Quay and Robertson Quay. Although Singapore has come a long way over the past 10 years and now showcases itself as a modern international city, you can’t leave without heading to Raffles Hotel for High Tea or a legendary Singapore Sling; an experience that carries with it generations of colonial history and tradition.

Experience Singapore Our favourite things to see and do Bumboat Ride Along Singapore River – Make your way to Marina Bay and jump aboard a traditional Singapore ‘Bumboat’ to cruise along the river. Hop off at Boat Quay, where you’ll find many bars and restaurants all housed in historic Peranakan shop-houses. Check out the riverbank deals such as ‘2 for 1’ and ‘happy hour’.

VivoCity – Located 5 minutes from the CBD, VivoCity is every shopper’s dream. With a broad selection of stores from fashion to homeware, toys to entertainment, it’s Singapore’s largest shopping mall and is designed to offer the best shopping experience for the entire family. The mall is complete with Singapore’s largest cinema complex, giant food courts and an amphitheatre for events.

Singapore Chilli Crab – For an authentic meal experience that will get your taste buds going, head to Chinatown and try Chilli Crab with tangy gravy and succulent flesh.

Clarke Quay – On the edge of the river, and buzzing with activity at all hours, you’ll find the most popular restaurants and bars. Soak up the atmosphere as you stroll through the retail shops and open-air bazaars.

Raffles Hotel – Step into nostalgia at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel for Singapore’s signature drink. Colonial architecture, straw fans gently swaying and peanut shells on the ground combine to make this an iconic experience.

Dempsey Hill – Once the site of military army barracks, just a short distance from Orchard Road and set in green surrounds, is a hip cluster of wining and dining establishments, art galleries, antique furniture stores and weekend farmers markets.

Kuala Lumpur is the focal point of Malaysia and the nation’s capital. The action here lies in the city centre dubbed the ‘Golden Triangle’ – a madcap mix of modern hotels and large shopping complexes complemented by traces of its British colonial past and cultural beliefs. The islands of Penang and Langkawi on the west coast of the peninsula are renowned for their relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches. Penang, the food capital of Malaysia, offers Batu Ferringhi Beach and the night bazaar in the evening along with Georgetown, unmistakably Chinese with a colonial architectural influence. Langkawi, an archipelago of islands, is blessed with many natural features, stunning waterfalls, tropical jungles and pristine sandy beaches, not to mention its duty free status. On the east coast of the peninsula, slightly lesser known islands of Tioman, Redang and the Perhentian Islands also offer some fantastic island escapes. Renowned for their white sandy beaches, crystal blue waters and abundant marine life, they are fast becoming ‘must-dos’ for underwater enthusiasts, or those who just want to laze around on an exotic tropical island.

Experience Kuala Lumpur Our favourite things to see and do Petronas Twin Towers – Observe KL from the world’s tallest twin towers; it takes all of 41 seconds to shoot up to the midpoint of Petronas Twin Towers. Tickets to the skybridge sell out fast, but how often do you get to feel on top of the world?

Batu Caves – Located 13 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur. Featuring a complex of giant limestone caves housing Hindu temples. Take a walk up the 272 steps to be greeted by monkeys – be careful not to carry any food or plastic bags with you.

Food – Due to the cultural mix throughout Kuala Lumpur, you’ll find an array of cuisines. From sambals, curries and Chinese dishes to Nyonya cusine, which is typically Malaysian. Be sure to check out Changkit Bukit Bintang, a popular boulevard with many restaurants and bars. Or for a more local experience head to the Hawker Stalls in Jalan Alor or Chinatown Petaling Street Night Markets.

Day trip to Malacca – Only 2 hours from KL, this quaint relaxed town is rich with history and culture from the ruling of the Portugese, Dutch and British. Take a stroll down Jonker St for cute shops offering Nyonya fashion, shoes, souvenirs as well as cafés and pubs.

Shopping – Most malls are open between 10am-10pm and you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to variety. Pavillion Mall is one of the newest malls, with over 450 retail shops, spread across seven levels. Sungei Wang Plaza is great for shoe lovers and KLCC is where you’ll find the likes of Zara, Top Shop and Kookai.

Chinatown – Located in and around Petaling Street, the area features a market, Chinese food options, and Chinese cultural attractions such as temples. The street food vendors that set up here at night are particularly popular. © Tourism Malaysia

Penang

Batu Ferringhi Beach

Highlights worth seeing along the way

Explore Penang

This turtle shaped island is located 8 kilometres west of mainland Malaysia and accessible by road over two bridges, ferry or plane. Often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, Penang is well known for its easy going kampungs (villages), sandy beaches, sightseeing and food.

Due to the diverse culture, foodies are spoilt for choice here, as each culture with their unique cooking styles have dared to create dishes that are a blend of tastes and spices. Famed throughout the country for specialties such as Laksa and Nasi Kandar which are found everywhere around the island. Venture out at night in search of a restaurant full of Penang locals, because where there’s locals, there’s good food. For the best Char Kway Teow (a popular noodle dish) take a walk along Lorong Selamat in Georgetown. One of the main attractions of Penang are the beaches. Batu Ferringhi along the north of the island, is by far the best and most visited beach area. With plenty of luxury hotels and restaurants, it’s a favourite with both locals and visitors. For more secluded, unspoilt beaches head to the northwestern coast. Here you’ll find Monkey Beach, Muka Head, Pantai Kerachut and Teluk Kampi which are all part of the Penang National Park. Georgetown is the second largest city in Malaysia and a favourite spot for visitors. Featuring one of the largest collections of 19th and early 20th century churches, temples, mosques and colonial buildings you can see why it’s classed as a UNESCO World Heritage-site. Visit between June to July for the Georgetown Festival and you’ll be treated to a month long celebration featuring art, music, dance, opera and film.

Penang Hawker Food – As Penang is the food capital of Malaysia, visit Gurney Drive. It’s the best of Penang on a plate! Hawkers fire up their woks and dish out street food fit for a king. The popular seafront promenade exemplifies the colours and atmosphere of Penang – fun, lively and vibrant. Penang Hill – Take a short ride up the funicular or a 2-3 hour hike, where you’ll be spoilt with a fantastic view of Georgetown and the Penang Bridge at the summit. Visit at night time for the best views of Georgetown lit up. Kek Lok Si Temple – The largest Buddhist Temple in Malaysia, located hillside and dating back to the early 20th century. Reach the top by a mini-funicular train where you’ll be greeted by a giant statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Over Chinese New Year the temple is covered with hundreds of lanterns which makes for an even more spectacular photo. Shopping – On Gurney Drive you’ll find an array of hawker stalls to choose from in the evening as well as Gurney Plaza, featuring a good selection of international brands. The Street of Harmony – A famous street featuring many different places of worship including Masjid Kapitan Keling Mosque, Kuan Yin and Sri Mahamariamman Temples, St George’s Church, Cathedral of Assumption and Khoo Kongsi. Snake Temple – Famous for its pit vipers living within the temple grounds. If you’re brave enough you can even touch them. Legend has it that a healer gave shelter to the snakes of the jungle and once the temple was complete the snakes appeared on their own accord. Get around by Trishaw – Hire one of these three wheeled, human powered vehicles and hear the history of this island from a local, it’s like your own private city tour. Make sure you negotiate the fare beforehand. Penang Museum & Art Gallery – Built in 1821 and previously called the Penang Free School. Now showcasing old photographs, maps, historical relics and paintings of early Penang. A great insight to Penang’s history. Water sports – Hit Batu Ferringhi for water activities such as banana boat riding, jet ski, parasailing and catamaran sailing to name a few.

Langkawi

Highlights worth seeing along the way

Explore Langkawi

An archipelago made up of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea just 30

kilometres off the coast of mainland Malaysia. Langkawi’s main island is accessible by plane or ferry from the mainland or Penang and surrounded by beautiful beaches, paddy rice fields, lush tropical rainforest and incredible wildlife. Settle in for the perfect beach getaway and let the sand warm your toes with a walk along Tanjung Rhu Beach. Located in the north and lined with tall casuarina trees, limestone caves, and mangroves it’s a nature lover’s paradise. You’ll find plenty of resorts and restaurants all scattered along the beach. Located at the south-western tip of the island is Cenang Beach, one of the more lively beach areas and home to some of the most beautiful resorts. The beachside road stretches with bistros, pubs, cafés and al fresco restaurants, with the beach that offers most water sports to entertain the whole family. Datai Bay is an exclusive area featuring two beautiful resorts, fringed with lush rainforest. With crystal clear waters, white sand and a coral reef just off the beach, this area is a must visit. Just 30 kilometres south of Langkawi Island is Pulau Payar Marine Park, a great place for snorkelling and diving. Jump on a local catamaran or speedboat to gain access to its beautiful Coral Garden, a section filled with colourful corals and ample varieties of fish. Voted as ‘The most scenic golf course in Malaysia’ and nominated as one of the best golf resorts in Asia, the Els Club Teluk Datai immediately put Langkawi on the map of premium golf destinations. With two other golf courses on the island all with beautiful views, you can see why Langkawi is known as a golfer’s dream.

Langkawi Cable Car and Sky Bridge – A 15 minute journey by cable car will see you to the top of Mt. Mat Cincang. Admire the lush rainforests and the minuscule islands from the 708 metre peak. Head to the observatory deck or make your way to the 125 metre long curved sky bridge. This bridge suspends by cable, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls – Also known as the Seven Wells, this is a group of seven pools connected by a series of waterfalls flowing down the side of Mat Cincang Mountain. Head to the foot of the mountain and walk up the steps to the lowest pool or hike to an upper pool. The locals believe the area is a favourite haunt for mountain fairies. Underwater World – Housing more than 500 species of sea creatures including penguins, flamingos and harbour seals. Take a walk through the underwater tunnel for up close and personal views of giant stingrays, green turtles and sharks. Mangroves – Take a mangrove tour of the beach area at Tanjung Rhu. Venture through limestone caves, mangrove swamps and further inland, to dense forest. Island hopping – Take a boat to a nearby island. One of our favourites is the island of the Pregnant Maiden, only 15 minutes from Langkawi. With a huge limestone hill in the middle of the island rising high above a dense rainforest. Make sure you take a dip in the refreshing Pregnant Maiden Lake to cool down. Canopy Trekking – Gunung Raya is Langkawi’s tallest mountain and home to 400 different tree species and an array of wildlife. Here you can abseil, climb, rappel and glide over treetops on a cable system 100 feet above the ground. Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) – Featuring a striking 12 metre tall sculpture of an eagle ready to take flight. Set in the township of Kuah, this area also features miniature fountains, terraces and great sea views. Gunung Raya – The highest peak in Langkawi at a height of 881 metres. Legend has it the mountain is the cursed giant called Mat Raya who once lived there. With lush rainforest it’s a great place to go hiking in search of local wildlife.

If you’re looking for a peaceful relaxing holiday, you will not be disappointed with Langkawi.

Malaysia Tours

Flavours of Malaysia 9 days/8 nights Savour the very best Malaysia has to offer with this delicious gastronomic pilgrimage from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, the country’s culinary capital. The tantalising cuisine reflects Malaysia’s multicultural mix.

Day 1-4: Kuala Lumpur Be immersed in KL’s vibrant Chinese scene with the start of your Petaling Street Heritage Food Trail. Try a hands-on cooking experience that will have you licking your fingers in no time as you partake in a wok course in the jungle outside of Kuala Lumpur. You are what you eat and what better way to see how it applies to KL-ites than by getting to know them – and their food, of course – with a full day Kuala Lumpur lifestyle and culture trail. Day 5: Kuala Lumpur – Penang Today head towards the charming island of Penang. Day 6: Penang Considered the culinary capital of Malaysia, embark on a Heritage and Traditional Food Trail of Penang. Day 8: Penang Embark on a fascinating tour that focuses on Georgetown’s Peranakan heritage and a rather more modern and unusual addition to its cultural scene. Day 9: Penang Tour arrangements end at Penang Airport.

Sir Mahamariamman Temple – Incorporating Spanish and Italian tiles, precious stones and gold in its design, KL’s main Hindu temple is an incongruous sight situated between two Buddhist temples at the edge of Chinatown. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion – Which stands defiantly as a symbol of Penang’s past while modern buildings go up around it. This impressive indigocoloured villa was built by a Chinese merchant in the late 19th century and boasts awe-inspiring decoration. Georgetown Street art – It’s so artsy without being pretentious. There’s lots of street art around the city, much of which was commissioned by the government and you can’t help but stumble across it. Check out Love Lane, Armenian Street, Kimberly Street among others. Temple of Ten Thousand Buddha’s – One of the main sights on the island is Kek Lok Si Temple. While the architecture is very impressive, it is the sight of Buddha’s that still practice here that make you stop in your tracks.

Experience

Borneo

A perfect destination for those looking for an adventure, Borneo is home to some

of the world’s oldest rainforests and spectacular diving sites. Favourite pastimes here include trekking through the jungle, bird watching and looking out for exotic wildlife. Malaysian Borneo makes up the northern half of the island of Borneo, with the southern region being part of Indonesia. Split into two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, both offer unique experiences. Sabah is the perfect place to start in this land of eco treasures. Untouched and unspoilt, Sabah’s heart is Mt. Kinabalu, an impressive granite peak stretching 4100 metres. Any trip to Sabah is not complete with at least a walk round the base of this famous mountain. Witness the ‘wild man of Borneo’ – the orangutan, at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, the largest sanctuary in the world or offshore head out to the Turtle Islands where environmental projects are underway to help the ancient sea turtles. The heart of Sarawak is its rainforests and the large rivers that feed in and out of it. With a vast network of national parks, it is a great place to explore the jungle, cave systems, wildlife and amazing flora and fauna found in these parts. It is also home to many unique and fascinating tribal cultures, including the infamous headhunters. There are numerous ethnic groups found throughout both states, the people are warm and friendly and enjoy many colourful festivals and traditions that will take you back centuries. If different culture fascinates you, engage in some customs with a stay in a longhouse. Sip on ‘lihiing’, their potent rice wine, no doubt leaving you with lasting memories or not! For those who prefer to laze the day away, there are many stunning beach resorts that dot the coastline.

Experience Borneo Our favourite things to see and do The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – Located in Sandakan, this rehabilitation centre was set up in 1964 to rehabilitate orphaned orangutan. Watch the orangutan up close in their natural habitat. A boardwalk leads to a viewing gallery and feeding platform where the orangutan are fed milk and bananas twice a day. While rehabilitation is the main goal here, the creation of the reserve also minimises the impact of deforestation.

Sipadan – If you are a keen diver, this is the place to go. Formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcano, this area is now rated by many dive journalists as one of the top diving destinations in the world. It is located in the Celebes Sea off the east coast of Sabah.

Gaya Street Fair – Every Sunday in Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Street is closed off to traffic so traders can set up their stalls. Shop for anything, from batik sarongs, fruits and flowers, arts and crafts, to footwear, antiques and souvenirs. If you like coffee, pick up some local Tenom coffee.

Mulu Caves – This spectacular cave system, deep in Sarawak’s Gunung Mulu National Park near Miri, has over 200 kilometres of cave passages. Over millennia the flow of water has cut deep gorges through the Park’s limestone mountains and within the rock itself, creating a network of vast caves. The main underground attractions of the Mulu Caves include Clearwater Cave, the longest cave in South East Asia, and Deer Cave.

Selingan Island – On the east coast of Sabah, stay overnight at the lodge so you can see turtles come ashore to lay eggs 365 nights of the year. It is one of the most important turtle breeding spots in South East Asia.

The city itself is based on the coast, overlooking a cluster of islands in the South China Sea. To the other side it is backdropped by the towering Crocker Mountain Range with Mt. Kinabalu in the far distance.
