Nyepi Day

Known as the day of silence, Nyepi marks the celebration of the Balinese New Year in the Hindu Lunar calendar. On this day the island literally shuts down. Hotels do not accept guests arrival, facilities outside of the resort are limited, vehicles are not allowed on the streets and use of electricity is restricted.

Known as the `Land of the Gods’, Bali is undeniably beautiful. For a small tropical island, Bali has an amazing ability to provide something for everyone. Initially discovered by surfers for its amazing beaches, Bali is now well recognised for not only its great surf and stunning beaches, but also its diving and array of other watersports, resorts, restaurants and nightlife. Whether you enjoy crowds or a secluded beach, Bali has the lot! Each region is so unique that it makes it impossible to describe Bali simply. This is largely due to the many different villages, each with their own individual charm and allure that collectively make up Bali. Moving away from the main beaches, Bali’s interior is a maze of fertile grassy plains, terraced rice paddies, striking lakes and vast volcanic mountains. The east coast is an area of great historical, cultural and spiritual significance with some of the most breathtaking natural scenery and idyllic village life on the island. This incredible landscape is only outdone by the warmth and friendliness of Balinese people. However you look at it, Bali is great value! Accommodation is well priced and plentiful, the shopping abundant, varied and cheap, and the food is incredible; think lemongrass, coriander, tamarind and ginger. You will never cease to be amazed at how the real beauty of Bali will reveal itself.

Experience Bali Our favourite things to see and do DINING – For cheap and cheerful, head to Made Warung’s in Seminyak. Now sheltered from the roadside bustle, the establishment has been serving authentic Indonesian food since 1969. Be sure to try one of their specialities which include Gado-gado (vegetables, sticky rice, tofu in spicy peanut sauce) and Nasi Campur (red or white rice topped with vegetables, chicken, beef, fish tofu and chili sauce). Slightly more upmarket, Ku De Ta is another great dining option. A favourite among ex-pats, it’s located beachfront in Seminyak. Grab a spot on the deck, take in the tunes and sip on a refreshing cocktail. TEMPLE VISIT – There are literally thousands of temples across Bali. Small devotional shrines are scattered through rice fields and often in hotel grounds. Some of the larger and more impressive temples, which are well worth visiting include Besakih (the Mother temple situated in Eastern Bali), Uluwatu (perched high on a cliff on the southern coastline) and Tanah Lot (the impressive Shore Temple) close to Pan Pacific Nirwana. BEACH BARS – There is nothing better than watching the sun go down with an evening drink in hand. There is an array of trendy beach bars in the up market Seminyak precinct, Ku de Ta or Potato Head are great options. SPA TREATMENTS – There is an incredible number of spas available in Bali. Most hotels also have at least massage facilities if not an established spa complex with many treatment rooms. Whichever you choose, you are sure to return. COOKING CLASSES – What better way to take back memories of Bali, than to learn how to cook some of the exotic dishes that make Bali famous. Most hotels offer a cooking class and there are also a number of respected cooking schools operating regular programmes teaching a range of Indonesian dishes.

Kuta is famed for mind blowing waves and is the heart and pulse of the area, while Legian is more relaxed and laid back. Many of the Legian resorts are located on the beach with the restaurants, bars and swimming pools being well placed to take advantage of the sea views and stunning sunsets. This area has also seen the opening of ‘Beach Walk’ – an exclusive retail hub full of small designer shops and great restaurants.

Although in the northernmost region of the Kuta-Legian strip, Seminyak is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Kuta. A favourite of artists and expatriates, it is a great place to base yourself. The restaurant scene is vibrant and eclectic and there is a contemporary nightlife, but with a more upmarket, trendsetting feel to it. This trendy element is also extended to the shopping, with several resident designers and a great selection of boutique shops.

Discover authentic Bali in one of these resorts, in the relatively tourist-free northeast region of the island and experience its local inhabitants’ typical way of life. On the almost empty, pristine beaches, you might occasionally meet a fisherman or local children frolicking in the revitalising azure water but apart from that, the resort is all yours.

Regional Bali The island of Bali has so much to offer, that sometimes seven nights just isn’t enough if you want to get out and explore other areas of the island, or outlying areas that are easily accessible to Bali. The main beaches of Bali along the southwest coast can be hectic, so if you want to add a bit of serenity to your holiday we suggest you head to one of the beaches further out, or over to the island of Lombok which is only a 25 minute flight.
