Set within a lush tropical landscape, the Kingdom of Thailand is a kaleidoscope of cultural and sensory contrasts. A proud Buddhist nation, tranquil, resplendent yet always compelling, Thailand has long delighted in their distinctive culture. Diversity lies with the irresistible combination of breathtaking natural beauty, inspiring temples, renowned hospitality and spa treatments, robust cuisine and ruins of fabulous ancient kingdoms. Bangkok, the capital and gateway to the country is a vibrant city that never sleeps. With the city keeping long hours you can shop into the night and even if stuck in traffic there’s always plenty to see. Thailand’s islands and beaches are legendary and with good reason. Locations such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Krabi can make dreams of that perfect tropical beach holiday come true to even the lesser known spots like Khao Lak and Koh Tao. Warm seas, tropical climates and endless miles of white sand coastlines fringed with palm trees – what more could you want? In Thailand’s mountainous north are the cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, both offering a host of opportunities from trekking, rafting, elephant riding to even home-stays with the many hill tribe people whom create superb crafts and textiles. You could visit Thailand dozens of times, but you’d have to work awfully hard to run out of options. Thailand truly is a magical destination with something for all.

Experience Thailand Our favourite things to see and do THAI MASSAGE – No matter what part of Thailand you are in, you will never have to search too hard to be able to indulge in a massage. Street side foot massages are great value for money and perfect to reenergise tired feet after a hard day of shopping. Or why not experience a traditional Thai massage, not for the faint hearted though, your body will be stretched in all directions and is usually performed on the floor. If you want a more relaxing approach then opt for an aromatherapy massage. TAILORED CLOTHES – Thai tailors are world renowned for their craftsmanship and speediness as well as, of course, having Thai silk on hand for a special piece of clothing. Shop around though, as you want to feel comfortable with your tailor and ensure you’re getting the right price. It’s a fun exercise but don’t expect too much. Remember how quick these will be turned around so it's unlikely to be a bespoke suit. FOOD – Thai food with its fresh ingredients, use of herbs and heat all have different flavours and influences depending on what part of Thailand you are in. In the south they love their seafood and in the north, due to cooler temperatures, the food is noticeably spicier. A fun activity is to do a cooking class – a lot of the hotels offer these so it’s convenient, and you can come back home and impress your friends with a new dish. MARKETS – Like much of South East Asia, Thailand is abundant with markets. Whether it is food, clothing or electronics, you don’t have to look too far to find what you want and at a bargain. Bartering is the go in a market, so bargain to your heart’s content. Markets are a lively affair. if you go first thing in the morning, you will probably even get a better price if you are their first customer as this is good luck for the seller. DIVING – Thailand boasts some great dive spots and if you aren’t certified already, you can be once you leave! There are a lot of registered PADI Dive Centres on the islands where you can do your courses usually at a much cheaper price than back home, as well as in much warmer waters. One of the most famous dive islands is Koh Tao, in the Gulf of Siam, where the true beauty of this small island lies beneath the surface of crystal clear waters. Tourism Authority of Thailand

Bangkok Shopping, temples, tuk-tuks and smiles, Bangkok is a city that pulses with chaos to give you a sensory overload. Vibrant and sprawling, it’s steamy and ritzy and glittery all at the same time with nowhere else in the world quite like it. Known to the locals as the ‘City of Angels’, Bangkok is a madcap mix of traditional Thai culture, merged with modern western framework of high-rise buildings, motorways and shopping malls. Not to be missed sights include the enormous array of Wats (temples), with their glistening glass mosaics, gold statues and towering Buddhas. If you’re heading to Bangkok for the shopping, you’ll not be disappointed as markets and malls dot the city. Whatever you plan to do, you will not be bored in Bangkok – it is a city not to be missed!

Our favourite things to see and do TEMPLES – No visit to Bangkok would be complete without visiting at least one of their grand temples. Playing a huge role in Thai culture, temples can be found dripping in gold and are steeped in history, far from anything you would find in New Zealand. Among the temples, a favourite is Wat Pho – here you’ll see the Reclining Buddha at 46 metres long! Don’t be surprised if you also see Buddhist monks in their traditional orange robes within the temple complexes as many also live on site. Please do respect their culture and cover your shoulders and knees when entering a temple. MBK SHOPPING CENTRE – This shopping centre is abuzz with activity day and night. Best described as one massive market but within a mall. There are floors of different goods ranging from phone accessories and music to ski jackets – all at a great price, with bargaining galore! ROOFTOP COCKTAILS – With such a sprawling skyline, there is nothing better than to finish your day watching the sunset from a rooftop bar. With sweeping views you can party into the night with the glistening of lights below you. Generally found as part of hotels, there are now many rooftop bars to be found in Bangkok all offering great cocktails. Hollywood introduced Sirocco and the Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower to the world after featuring it on Hangover 2. Worthy of a mention are also Vertigo and Moon Bar found at the Banyan Tree Hotel, Red Sky at Centara Grand at Central World and The Roof @38 Bar at Mode Sathorn Hotel. A reminder that most rooftop bars have a dress code so if you are considering checking one out be sure to pack for the occasion! MARKETS – Bangkok is abundant with markets but the latest to hit the scene is Asiatique The Riverfront – an open air market with colonial-style architecture. Located in the former docklands area along the Chao Phraya River, these markets offer a cutting-edge ‘festival market and living museum’ style concept. Open from 4pm until midnight, great shopping can be found along with an array of cuisine options. With an upbeat atmosphere, there’s something for all. WATER TAXIS – A cheap fun way to get around the city and see local life along the way. Water taxis are a great way to hop between some of the temples, but expect a bit of a splash as the wee motorised boats buzz along the many canals around the city.

FOOD – Thailand is renowned for its cuisine, and Phuket, lying in the south, is abundant with fresh ingredients and seafood. There is an array of restaurants to choose from and can be found all over the island. Be sure to order a few dishes and share amongst the table so you can truly experience more of the flavours and local dishes without restricting yourself to just the one! DAY TRIPS – Head down to your closest beach and hire a longtail boat and skipper – ask them to whisk you away for the day, it’s a great way to find a nice wee private retreat. Don’t be shy to ask your hotel to arrange a takeaway lunch basket for you and then all there is left to do is tell your skipper what time you want them to come and collect you. It will definitely make for an amazing day out!

Koh Samui A tropical island paradise, Koh Samui lies in the Gulf of Siam. Once a backpacker's dream back in the 70s, today the island is bustling with tourists from around the globe. The most known area, Chaweng, is a seven kilometre stretch of beachfront lined with resorts and packed with restaurants, markets and a bustling nightlife all at your doorstep. Water sport enthusiasts rate this area as second to none as it’s all available here. If you are wanting something a little quieter, head to Bo Phut or Lamai. As well as the beaches, Koh Samui’s interior is filled with coconut plantations, rice paddies and some lovely waterfalls, so allow some time to explore this beautiful island beyond its coastline.

© Chaweng Regent Beach Resort & Spa

Our favourite things to see and do GET OUT ON THE WATER – Koh Samui is abundant with water sports, especially in the more popular beach of Chaweng. Apart from hiring water sports equipment, you can always opt for a day trip out to Ang Thong National Park to witness first hand the beautiful scenery. Another option could be to take the ferry over to Koh Phangan for the day. BIG BUDDHA – Wat Phra Yai is home to Koh Samui’s most famous landmark, the Big Buddha. Most visitors come to marvel at the sheer size and beauty of this remarkable statue at some point during their holiday. Visible from several kilometres away and even from the air when arriving on or leaving the island, the 12 metre tall golden image stands proud. At the base of the structure, several shops and restaurants are scattered so you can pick up some souvenirs or a snack. CHAWENG BEACH BARS – At night time the beach stays alive along Chaweng and you can pretty much bar hop your way along the beach. If you are staying in the area you can go for a stroll along the beach as the sun is going down and find a spot that takes your fancy to enjoy a sundowner. NAMUANG WATERFALL – If you like getting active on your holiday, then you might want to take a 30 minute walk to this waterfall, one of two in the area, standing 80 metres high. Considered the most beautiful falls on the island, they are located 10 kilometres south from Nathon at Ban Thurian, which is on the west side of the island. DIVING – There are many scuba diving schools located around Samui, offering a wide range of dive facilities as well as some resorts having their own dive centres. There are also tours available for snorkelling and fishing. The areas of Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Ang Thong Marine National Park are renowned for divespots and have the best in the country.
