General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. A standard level of accommodation with a limited range of rooms and facilities. Rooms are clean and comfortable with basic furnishings. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of rooms and facilities, with rooms furnished to a comfortable standard. Superior standard of accommodation with a wide range of rooms and facilities, and a higher standard of service. First Class accommodation with an excellent range of facilities and services. Accommodation in this rating is considered among the best in the country. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your Travel Consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. When selecting your accommodation please note that the overall quality of properties in Alaska is generally lower than equivalent priced properties in other countries, particularly in the lower ratings. In general the room sizes are quite small and can vary, even within one property. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your Travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family’s needs. Price Indicator: The price is provided as a guide only. The actual price may differ to that indicated in this brochure due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Your travel consultant will quote you the actual price at the time of booking. Per person pricing is in New Zealand dollars.

Canada & Alaska Staggeringly large and home to some distinctly diverse regions, Canada is a rich tapestry of contrasting cities and landscapes. It is truly enormous and packed with all sorts of amazing places to be discovered. As you move between the different provinces, you might be surprised to find the culture changing as drastically as the landscape. From Celtic and French influence on the east coast and English in the west, you might need to sometimes stop and ask yourself if you are in Canada. Wildlife lovers will be enthralled by the huge open spaces, sprawling forests and diverse animal life. From Canada, head north and veer off to the west - you’ll soon find yourself in Alaska. This enormous stretch of land is defined by vast national parks, glaciers and complete wilderness. Data detoxes are common here, and there’s often more wildlife than mobile coverage; those with a keen eye will spot wolves, bison and bears, amongst others. You'll need plenty of curiosity to conquer this beast, and a thirst for all things pure and simple. But with such an epic landscape, comes an equally epic adventure.

6 Tips for your Holiday

Canada is epic for a road trip. This is history, culture and natural beauty at its very best, and with a massive terrain of nearly 10 million square kilometres, discovering this diverse land by road is an amazing. Coastline, prairies, mountains and emerald lakes, it’s all in Canada. The renowned Rocky Mountaineer showcases North America’s highest peaks, while the Alaska Railroad network is immensely popular, its wide windows and domes providing the perfect vantage point.

1 / SPECTACULAR SEASONS The seasons vary considerably in Canada and Alaska, and days, just like in New Zealand, can experience multiple weather changes. In Alberta, the temperature once changed from -19ºC to 22ºC in just one hour. Autumn in Canada’s north-west territories brings breath-taking auroras and the great caribou migration, while winter calls for cosy log cabins and a roaring fire. Winter enthusiasts will revel in Alaska, when outdoor adventures abound (dog mushing, snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling) and the northern lights are in full glow. There are dozens of Alaskan events taking place in late February and March. Then, in spring, Canadian ice melts and bears awaken from their slumber. Come summer, everyone is outdoors again, but this time in 25ºC sunshine.

2

3 / TRAINS, PLANES AND AUTOMOBILES

2 / WILDLIFE ON THE MOVE From giant moose to polar bears in the very north, the wildlife here is as abundant as the maple syrup. Enjoy real-life encounters with enormous whales, there are more than 30 species in the Canadian oceans, tour boats are kitted out with whale-watching mod cons such as elevated viewing platforms and 360° lookouts. Witness the formidable ‘salmon runs’ in all its leaping, writhing glory, when autumn brings a mass of thrashing salmon heading steadily upstream. Optimum grizzly bear viewing months fall between spring and autumn, before they take a gigantic bear-sized nap for winter.

© Ottawa Tourism

5 / POUTINE CANADA ON THE CULINARY MAP Canada’s famed poutine is a messy pile of chips, cheese curds and gravy, it’s a faultless combination. In Montréal, La Banquise has more than 30 types to choose from. While Québec hosts an annual ‘Poutine Week’ during the first week of February. Also in Canada, you’ll find maple syrup in/on/poured over everything and the Montréal Smoked Meat Sandwich is not to be missed. Alaska’s King Crab quite literally rules the menu. The months between October and January provide the best time for tasting. Devour huge platters of enormous crab legs - fully cracked open and dripping with a generous dose of sauce. Equally sublime is crimson Alaskan salmon. Naturally delicious, you’ll need little more than black pepper and a wedge of lemon.

4 / NATURAL WONDERS You can see the Northern Lights in both Canada and Alaska. The most reliable spot in Alaska is Fairbanks, it sits directly under the aurora oval. In Canada, Yellowknife is the spot for jaw-dropping aurora viewing. Canada’s Icefields Parkway carves a route through 100 ancient glaciers, waterfalls and turquoise lakes between Jasper and Lake Louise. Alaska hosts many impressive fjords, but Kenai Fjords National Park tops the lot for startling glaciers. Not to be outdone, Canada delights visitors with the Rocky Mountains and plentiful lakes, including Lake Louise, which is flanked by picture-perfect mountain peaks.

6 / A COLLECTION OF CULTURES Canada has a rich French heritage, especially in Québec. Although the vocabulary differs from that in France, you’ll find plenty of Francophile culture, which includes Canadian influenced French cuisine. Look out for tourquettes - lollies made by pouring boiling maple syrup onto snow. The First Nations are the various Aboriginal Canadians who are neither Inuit nor Métis. Across the country there are various cultural centres and museums, but Vancouver’s Stanley Park with its towering totem poles is particularly impressive. Alaskan traditions are so deep-rooted, you’ll enjoy a full agenda of native dancing, traditional music, crafts, festivals and history. Of course, dog sledding is a state obsession. Partake in an excursion, or visit in March when the 1850 kilometre Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome occurs.

fjords; Canada’s western-most provinces of British Columbia and Alberta have some of the world’s most spectacular wilderness.

British Columbia melds this scenic splendour with the sophistication of Vancouver and the old-world charm of its province capital, Victoria. Several magnificent rail, sea and road journeys begin on this western seaboard. The Sea to Sky Highway leads to Whistler through majestic alpine scenery, with a Rocky Mountaineer train taking a similar path. Join Rocky Mountaineer on another great rail journey passing through canyons and lakes on your way to neighbouring Alberta. Set sail on the Pacific Ocean to the famed Inside Passage or cruise the Discovery Coast. Not only is the landscape magnificent but the land and sea abounds with wildlife, including whales, sea lions, bears and elk. Sublime alpine Lake Louise and mountain resorts, including Banff and Jasper, entice travellers inland to Alberta. Calgary and its famous stampede and Edmonton, Canada’s festival city, which boasts the world’s largest shopping and entertainment complex, add to its allure. Both provinces are home to many First Nations, Canada’s original inhabitants, discover their ancient culture at various cultural centres. Kayak along routes used by centuries of fur trappers or paddle across tranquil fjords in the company of otters and porpoises.

Vancouver Ski or snowboard in the morning, play golf or go kayaking in the afternoon, Vancouver’s location between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains makes all this possible and also ensures that the city regularly features among the most liveable cities in the world. With Mother Nature on your front doorstep it’s no wonder Vancouver abounds with outdoor activities from sailing to hiking the Grouse Grind Mountain Trail just 20 minutes from the city. But, as British Columbia’s largest city, Vancouver is also a sophisticated centre of arts, shopping and entertainment. Explore farmers markets, exotic Chinatown with its apothecary shops, or spot the stars and smell the coffee on trendy Robson Street.

Victoria, Vancouver Island

© Kathryn Burrington

A perfect stay in Victoria, Vancouver Island

On the southern tip of Vancouver Island, an elegant reminder of the British Empire lives on as the capital of British Columbia. Victoria, with its iconic Provincial Legislature buildings and Empress Hotel, provides a remarkable contrast to the untamed landscapes that surround it. Victoria is well known for the amazing Butchart Gardens just 20 minutes outside downtown. A designated National Historic Site, Butchart has over 50 acres of magnificent gardens to explore. Take a stroll through themed gardens linked by spacious lawns, streams and lily ponds. The gardens were established in 1904 and are in the style of the grand estates of the time.

Our favourite things to see and do Beacon Hill Park – Wander around this beautiful park filled with native habitats and manicured gardens. Try a spot of bird watching or sit and watch the world go by. Rogers’ Chocolate Shop – No visit to Victoria is complete without visiting Rogers’ Chocolate shop. The first chocolates were made here in 1885 and they haven’t looked back since. Dining – With the second highest number of restaurants per capita in North America, Victoria is a culinary paradise. Many of the city’s top chefs focus their menus on products grown on Vancouver Island. Shopping – Four blocks along Government Street turn into Trounce Alley, one of Victoria’s best kept secrets, where fashion and gift shops await. Across the street is Bastion Square, once the site of Victoria’s Court House, a brothel and several hangings, it is now full with shops and restaurants.

If you happen to be in Victoria between April-October you can’t go past a whale watching trip. For a real thrill head out on a zodiac, or take the leisurely option on a covered boat. Head out in search of minke whales, gray whales, harbour seals and other marine life. If you’re lucky enough you might be able to spot one of the resident orcas that live near Victoria year round.

Ghost Tours – Victoria is said to be one of the most haunted towns in British Columbia with over 5000 years of history. Explore historic courtyards, alleys and hear some scary stories.

Join a cycling tour where you can explore the sights and sounds of James Bay and Oak Bay and get an insightful commentary on what makes Victoria one of the most treasured cities in the world.

Golf – With a climate that encourages golfing year-round, Victoria and Vancouver Island are home to many of Canada’s most beautiful and challenging courses.

You must’ve worked up an appetite by now, so for a treat why not indulge in a traditional afternoon tea in the Empress’ Tea Lobby and reminisce on the grandeur of a bygone era.

Central and South Vancouver Island

Gulf Islands

Central Vancouver Island is a relaxed haven of sandy beaches, valleys, agriculture and communities like Parksville and Comox. Nanaimo is the mainland ferry hub and fishing, paddling, whale watching and golfing are key attractions around here. Cowichan enjoys Canada’s warmest temperatures and is known for birdwatching, outdoor activities and exploring local farmers markets. The south is the most populous area on the island, but it’s still quiet enough to attract locals who treasure peace and serenity. There are parks, easy-access beaches and on the west coast, near Sooke, you’ll find windswept beaches and fishing opportunities minutes from the dock.

Accessible by ferry or floatplane, the Gulf Islands sit along the east coast of Vancouver Island and are made up of over 200 islands. Wildlife, nature, coastal activities and an artsy vibe are the top reasons to visit. Some highlights are: Salt Spring with its artisan producers and Saturday market on the waterfront; Pender Island where you can grab a kayak and head out for a paddle, take a hike, or go gallery-hopping; Gabriola known as 'Isle of the Arts' thanks to the hundreds of artists who reside here and Saturna, the most remote island, with a full-time population of just a few hundred residents, has nearly half of the island dedicated to national park.

Whistler

Our favourite things to see and do

A perfect stay in Whistler

There is so much to do in Whistler, it’s hard to know where to begin.

Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre – This centre is dedicated to the history and culture of local First Nations people, showcasing traditional singers and dancers. Spend a day here watching the artists weaving and carving, explore nature on the Cultural Forest Walk, and taste indigenous food at the café.

Take a ride up Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains and hop on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. The journey between the two provides a 360 degree window into Whistler Blackcomb’s alpine environment. You could quite easily spend a whole day up here exploring the many hiking trails and mustsees such as Black Tusk, Overlord Glacier and the Inukshuks (the iconic Whistler photo op) but there is also plenty to do in the valley below.

Zip Trek Bear Tour – Experience an incredible journey on a series of five ziplines joined by a network of suspension bridges, boardwalks and trails. Explore the hidden beauty of Fitzsimmons Creek and the picturesque forest valley between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.

Explore by bike on the paved Valley Trail that runs 40 kilometres and connects trails with beaches, lakes and golf courses, or simply spend time soaking up the atmosphere in this pedestrian-only village as you meander around the shops and restaurants.

Golf – If you’re not a golf devotee, don’t let that stop you from playing a round on one of Whistler’s championship courses. You’ll always have distracting views to blame for going over par.

Bears! You may spot one from the chairlift or while strolling through the outskirts of the village but to almost guarantee a sighting of Whistler’s famous black bears head out on a viewing tour. Ride in comfort in a 4WD and learn about Whistler’s favourite residents from experienced guides. If all this is a bit too strenuous take time to relax and unwind at the Scandinave Spa that offers majestic scenery in a tranquil and secluded setting. For dinner why not take a Whistler Tasting Tour progressive dinner. Four of Whistler’s best restaurants, including Whistler Brewhouse and Quattro, are in one multi-course meal and this means it’s one of the rare opportunities when you actually can have it all.

River of Golden Dreams – Float your boat down Whistler’s own lazy river, the meandering five kilometre long waterway is a favourite with the locals.

Fly-fishing– Whistler has some of the best fly-fishing in the world for salmon and trout. Farmers’ Market – Every Wednesday and Sunday in summer the Whistler Farmers’ Market offers farm-fresh local product, artisan treats, art, gifts and entertainment. Lost Lake – Take a 10 minute stroll from the village out to Lost Lake and explore the surrounding network of hiking and biking trails. Rainforest Canopy – Experience Whistler’s coastal temperate rainforest from the ground up. Explore trails, cross a network of suspension bridges and take in the views from the treetops, learn about the local ecosystem from your guide and see if you can spot the local wildlife. Dog Sledding – Let your eager and powerful dog team lead you through narrow winding trails of forests graced with cedar giants that are hundreds of years old. Stop for a warm up at a trapper’s cabin on Totem Pole Lake and learn about the history of Canadian fur trappers. Skiing – Whistler Blackcomb features two majestic mountains with epic skiing and snowboarding conditions. Skiing and snowboarding equipment rental shops are conveniently located throughout the village.

The Canadian Rockies The Canadian Rockies are home to four interlocking national parks - Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho - which means there is over 25,000 square kilometres of protected land. Everything you’ve heard about this area is true, it really is bursting with beautiful snow-capped peaks, emerald lakes and glistening glaciers. As the main highway running from east to west Canada goes through the area, many of these stunning gems are incredibly easy to access. For example, driving from Banff to Jasper National Parks will have you travelling along the Icefields Parkway, one of North America’s most scenic drives. Along this road are some of the highest mountains in the Canadian Rockies, stunning lakes, waterfalls, wildlife and more than 100 glaciers.

Calgary

Banff

Calgary, where the Canadian prairies collide with the Rocky Mountains, is

Situated in the stunning Canadian Rockies, this must be one of the most

Canada’s oil town. With its fortunes tied to energy prices it’s either boom or bust here; a whiff of the Wild West still wafts around its glitzy shopping malls and skyscrapers. Calgary was established in the 19th century as a headquarters for the Mounted Police, but it was also a railway town and fur trading post.

Enjoy breakfast at one of the many restaurants and cafés on Stephen Avenue Walk before checking out one of the art galleries or boutiques along this daytime pedestrian mall. A popular gathering place for the locals is nearby Olympic Plaza where in warmer weather you’ll find a wading pool and in the cooler months, ice skating. The Glenbow Museum in the centre of the city is a great art and history museum with interesting exhibits on local First Nations and Mavericks of Alberta, which includes all sorts of interesting characters. There is also some great public art that you should check out on a walk around the city centre. It’s easy to lose track of time at Heritage Park Historical Village, Canada’s largest living history museum, just a short drive from Calgary downtown. You can wander through the village and see how people lived in the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, ride the steam train, climb aboard the S.S. Moyie paddle wheeler, savour baked treats from the Alberta Bakery or enjoy a horsedrawn wagon ride. Head up the Calgary Tower to rest your feet and feast your eyes with views over the city and Rocky Mountains. If you’re feeling brave, you can step out into space, on the glass floor of the observation deck. Stay for dinner at the revolving restaurant and dine on the local Alberta beef.

picturesque towns in Canada. It has award-winning restaurants, historic charm, unique shops, super beautiful natural surroundings as well as hot mineral springs and plenty of nearby scenic wonders all situated within Banff National Park.

It has incredible snow in the winter for ski and snowboard holidays with easy access to three big resorts and throughout the rest of the year it is a perfect base for exploring the Canadian Rockies. For the most spectacular views and photo opportunities the Banff Gondola will take you to the top of Sulphur Mountain on a seven minute ride, from up here the views of the surrounding mountains and downtown Banff are breath-taking. You’ll want to visit the Fairmont Banff Springs; the hotel is an iconic landmark and the 'Castle in the Rockies' has been operating for more than 125 years. Even if you aren’t staying there, it is great to have a wander through. Also in town is the Banff Park Museum, a great natural history museum giving you the rundown of the national park and Buffalo Nations Luxton Museum a museum focussing on the culture and traditions of the local First Nations. A short drive from Banff will have you admiring some more sensational scenery at Lake Minnewanka. This large glacial lake is a beautiful spot and popular for picnicking, mountain biking, hiking and canoeing. You can also do scenic boat cruises here. You can also easily explore the nearby Yoho National Park, with even more spectacular natural wonders including the extremely photogenic Emerald Lake.

Lake Louise

Jasper

Welcome to the most photographed spot in the Canadian Rockies –

Jasper is a peaceful, quaint town from where you can explore the beautiful

Lake Louise. Your first glimpse of the emerald green water (in the warmer months!) with a soaring mountain back drop and palatial lakeside hotel hits you, it really is postcard perfect. To beat the crowds in summer and to get that perfect photo of majestic Victoria Glacier, treat yourself to a stay at Fairmont Château Lake Louise – the only hotel right on the glistening lake. In the summer you can hire a canoe and spend a few hours floating on the lake, there are also plenty of hikes ranging from walks and easy hikes to backcountry epic adventures. You could walk around the Lake Louise Shoreline Trail to the Victoria Glacier, or hike up to the famous Lake Agnes Tea House for a slice of freshly baked apple crumble. Just a 25 minute drive from Lake Louise is another stunning gem, Moraine Lake. The glacier fed lake, when melted, is the most vivid turquoise colour and it gets brighter throughout the summer as the glaciers melt, the lake generally doesn’t begin to melt until June. Set in the rugged Valley of the Ten Peaks, Moraine Lake is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and rock piles, creating a scene so stunning it almost seems unreal. There is a lovely, fairly easy, walk the Moraine Lakeshore Trail, that works its way along the shoreline and is definitely worth the effort. Lake Louise is a great year-round destination and in winter you’ll be busy with world-class skiing, ice skating and sleigh rides.

surrounds of Jasper National Park, the largest national park of the Canadian Rockies. Jasper has got brewpubs, cafés and restaurants that serve up plenty of local flavours like bison, so you just know it’ll make the perfect basecamp for whatever you get up to in Jasper National Park. To get a bird’s eye view of the area, head up Whistler’s Mountain on the Jasper SkyTram. Taking you up to an elevation of 2263 metres you’ll get stunning vistas over mountain ranges stretching up to 80 kilometres away.

There is an abundance of wildlife close to town and hiking trails from easy strolls to back country hikes for the experienced trampers. A must visit is Maligne Lake, at 22 kilometres long it is the second-largest glacier-fed lake in the world. While its azure-blue waters can be cold for swimming, there are plenty of other activities to do in the Maligne Valley including hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and boat tours to the much pictured Spirit Island. Jasper is located at the Northern end of the Icefields Parkway, the dramatic and scenic route that leads down through the Columbia Icefield to Banff National Park. You can join a tour that heads out on to the Athabasca Glacier and hear stories of early explorers in the valley at the Columbia Icefields Centre. If you’re game head out on the Glacier Skywalk – a glass bottom one kilometre cliff-edged walkway that leads to a platform where glass is all that separates you from a 280 metre drop.

You can’t miss this iconic visitor experience. Niagara Falls is spectacular by

Québec City

Our favourite things to see and do

A perfect stay in Québec City

If you’re a first-time visitor to Québec, it may be worth writing on your hand: ‘I am in Canada’. With the cobbled streets, 17th century houses, the walled clifftop location above the Saint Lawrence River and conversations taking place in French all around you – you may start to wonder which continent you are on!

Take a wander around Old Québec where you’ll find quaint old stone buildings and narrow, winding streets clustered around the city’s harbour. This historic neighbourhood is a UNESCO World Heritage-site and the only walled city north of Mexico – it simply oozes charm. The Fairmont Chateau Frontenac hovers majestically over the old town and will be the backdrop to many a photo. It is also worth taking a walk through the public areas of this historic gem. Now it’s time to eat! Québec City’s cuisine has strong French ties, which can be found in its hearty stews, meat pies, speciality chocolate shops, bakeries, crêperies and cafés that fill the streets. A popular dish to try is poutine: fries smothered in fresh cheese curds and topped with a hot gravy (a lot more delicious than it sounds). For a distinctly Québécois meal, head to Aux Anciens Canadiens which is housed in a building dating back to 1675. Work off your lunch by climbing the Breakneck Stairs. Over 30 sets of stairs that link the Lower Town with the Upper Town that were built in 1635.

Dufferin Terrace – Overlooking Old Québec from its perch just below the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, this is the perfect place for spectacular views of the St. Lawrence River. If you’re game in the winter months have a go on the ice slide. Quartier Petit-Champlain – The oldest shopping district in North America with narrow cobblestone streets, boutique shops, bistros and cafés spilling out of restored buildings. Place Royal – A small square with a big history. It was here that the city was founded in 1608. Today Place Royale takes visitors back in time with the help of the oldest stone church in North America and a massive mural that traces 400 years of Québec history. Montmorency Falls Park – About a 15 minute drive from Old Québec, along the St. Lawrence River, you’ll find Montmorency Falls, an 82 metre tall waterfall. This is a great place to head to escape the city with many hiking and biking trails in the park. You can head to the top of the falls by a staircase, or for the more leisurely option, take the cable car to the top. Battlefields Park (The Plains of Abraham) – This park witnessed the sealing of Canada’s fate in the Battle of Québec in 1775, it has great views over Québec City. Museums – From historic convents dating to the mid-1600s to art, military and culture, Québec City has a museum for any interest. Fortifications of Québec – The fortifications around the city are about 4.5 kilometres in length and are part of a defence system built between 1608 and 1871. Take a tour along the walls to learn their history and enjoy views of the historic city and St. Lawrence River. Follow the walls right to the Citadel, a star-shaped fortress where you can see the Changing of the Guard ceremony and watch muskets being fired. Parliament Hill – Standing prominently on top of the hill, the building is home to Québec’s parliament and a beautiful piece of architecture, inspired by the Louvre in Paris. It’s especially pretty at night when it is lit up.

Touring by Rental Car Driving in Canada Exploring Canada and Alaska by car is easy. Driving on the right hand side of the road may be different, however the roads are excellent, well sign-posted and spacious. Just remember the centre line should be by the driver!

Choosing your Rental Car Take into consideration the size of the vehicle you require. If the vehicle is to be used for day touring from a central base, then a smaller vehicle may be adequate and easier for parking. If doing longer travel, remember you will have luggage to transport around as well as the shopping, so a midsize to larger vehicle should be considered. We suggest you book before leaving home, as this will save you money and ensure that you get the vehicle of your choice.

native cultures are just some of the unforgettable memories that ‘The Last Frontier’, the largest state in the USA, has to offer. Five distinct regions make up this great land – South Central, Inside Passage, the Interior, Far North and Southwest. Anchorage is the gateway to the adventure, culture and incredible landscapes. Cruise the waters of the Inside Passage and be surrounded by pure nature. From Juneau, hike through the rainforest along Mendenhall Lake and onto glacial terrain, a unique experience. Travel into the Interior region to Denali National Park, finding not only wildlife but the tallest mountain in North America – Denali. For a unique winter experience you can’t go past Fairbanks with dog mushing, ice sculptors and the famous Aurora Borealis – Northern Lights. Vast and remote, crossing the Arctic Circle is what the Far North is all about. View brown bears in their natural habitat feeding on salmon on Kodiak Island in the Southwest region. This is an area where you get to see changing landscapes of volcanic terrain in the Katmai National Park through to the windy grasslands of the Aleutian Islands.

Our favourite things to see and do

A perfect stay in Anchorage

Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, is a city that maintains the perfect mix of stunning natural environment and metropolitan buzz.

Rise early and start the day off right with breakfast, hometown restaurants are the perfect place to try an Alaskan twist on traditional favourites. Order King Crab Benedict or a stack of sourdough hotcakes. Rent a bike or stroll along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail to enjoy spectacular views of Cook Inlet or take a shuttle to a trail head in Chugach State Park. Wildlife like the trail almost as much as humans, you may see one of the more than 1500 moose that live in Anchorage. Grab a bite of Alaska at one of the many sidewalk vendors along the downtown streets. After lunch, get an eagle eye view of those mountains on the horizon by taking a flightseeing tour from Lake Hood or Merrill Field. It’s an amazing experience. A 15 minute drive from downtown will have you at the tree-lined trailhead of Anchorage’s most popular hike, Flattop Mountain. While the trail to the summit is rocky and steep, there is a short, paved loop that gives you a taste of the views. With the city below on one side and the surrounding mountains stretching out on the other, this is where Anchorage meets the wild. On your way back to the city stop at one of the South Anchorage breweries for a well earned refreshment.

Dog Sledding and Heli Tour – Enjoy a spectacular helicopter ride into the majestic Chugach Mountains, land on a snowcovered glacier surrounded by towering peaks. You can even drive a dog sled team. Wildlife – Keep your camera at the ready for bears, sea lions, otters, moose and more. When driving, watch for vehicles stopped on the side of the road – it often means that people are watching wildlife! Anchorage Museum – This is Alaska’s largest museum and tells the real story of the north. Weaving together social, political, cultural, scientific, historic and artistic threads. Explore the diversity of Alaska Native cultures, including masterworks of Alaska Native art and design from the collections of the Smithsonian Institute. Glaciers – For spectacular glaciers head on a day cruise in either Kenai Fjords National Park (departs Seward) or Prince William Sound (departs Whittier). Cruise through the icy waters and be in awe of the scenery. Alaska Native Heritage Centre – Gain an understanding of the different traditions and languages that make up Alaska. See artist demonstrations, music and dance performances and other talks on the indigenous culture in Alaska. Crow Creek Mine – After an hour’s drive arrive at this mine that at its peak produced 700 ounces of gold every month. With a little luck you might find a few flakes that have been left behind. Eklutna Historical Park – A short drive north will have you at this Dena’ina Athbascan community dating back to 1650. The park looks at the fascinating mixture of the Russian influences and Athabascan culture. Alyeska Resort and Glacier – A 45 minute trip from Anchorage and you can ride the Alyeska Resort aerial tram up the mountainside and hike to the edge of Alyeska Glacier in Girdwood. You’ll also see some stunning views of Turnagain Arm below. Trolley Tour – A great way to see the main sights of Anchorage and learn some of the interesting history of the area.

Our favourite things to see and do

A perfect stay in Fairbanks

Fairbanks is one of Alaska’s year-round destinations – in the summer, the

Arctic Circle – Enjoy a small plane flight from Fairbanks and land across the Arctic Circle, where you will receive an official Arctic Circle certificate. Experience a walk on the arctic tundra, which will give you a sense of the vast scale of Alaska’s arctic regions.

Board the only authentic sternwheeler in Alaska for a cruise along the Chena and Tanana Rivers into the history of Interior Alaska. Enjoy a narrated tour which provides background on the area’s natural history and the Athabascan Indian culture.

Pioneer Park – Head back to an era when gold was king and narrow-gauge railroads were the way to get around. You’ll find museums, a riverboat, a native Alaskan village, a mining operation, and more. Play golf on the world’s farthest north mini-golf course, or take a lazy ride on the Crooked Creek and Whiskey Island Railroad.

sun is up for almost 24 hours allowing you to enjoy a host of activities.

If you’ve been good this year head to Santa’s house in the North Pole. You can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and have your photo taken with them. After your visit, head to the pipeline viewpoint which is the perfect spot to see the astonishing engineering of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline. The Goldrush started in Fairbanks in the early 1900s. Today you can try your hand at gold panning to uncover your own Alaskan gold. Fairbanks and the surrounding areas are some of the best places on earth to experience the amazing Aurora Borealis. These giant electrical storms are formed by solar flares from the sun reacting with the earth’s magnetic field. This causes brilliant displays of light flashing dramatically across the sky. You’ll need to set your alarm though as the best time to see them is late evening through to the early hours of the morning during late September to mid April. If your day has been strenuous take a journey out of Fairbanks to the Chena Hot Springs. Discovered in 1905 these are a great place to unwind in beautiful surroundings.

Fishing – Try freshwater fishing for salmon, pike and lake trout. This region is home to Alaska’s most unique trophy sport with record sheefish, often called the ‘Tarpon of the North’. Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum – Take a trip back in time as you stroll through this remarkable collection of 70 rare and one-of-a-kind antique cars. Other exhibits include vintage clothing, large Alaska historical photos and memorabilia. Hiking – Some of the best trails near Fairbanks include Angel Rocks, Eagle Summit, Grantie Tors, and Chena Dome and cater to all levels of fitness. Ice Museum – Devoted to all things ice, this museum will put you in a winter mood no matter what the summer temperatures are like. You’ll see several large ice displays and if you’re game – a freezer you can go in to feel like it’s 20 degrees below zero. Museum of the North – Fascinating exhibitions showcasing over 1.4 million artefacts of Interior Alaska. Covering history, dinosaurs, plants and wildlife with interactive displays. Morris Thompson Cultural Centre – A great place to learn about the people, land and culture of Interior Alaska.

Our favourite places to stay: • •

Dog Mushing – It’s been part of life in Alaska since its earliest days, long before it was a state or European explorers reached its shores. Despite the great distances between some rural communities, travelling by dog team is often still the best way to get around. Also check out Bouchard’s International Dog Mushing Museum to find out about the history and lifestyle of dog mushers and the famous Iditarod race.

Denali National Park

Kenai Peninsula

Inside Passage

One of Alaska’s most popular destinations is a two hour drive from Fairbanks, a four hour drive from Anchorage, or a short drive from the town of Healy. Larger than the state of Massachusetts, Denali National Park and Preserve is six million acres of pristine wilderness with only one road running through the middle. Denali, at 6190 metres, dominates the park and on a clear day, you can get an iconic photo of the mountain.

A two and a half hour drive from Anchorage you’ll find Seward, a bustling harbour town full of cruise ships and fishing charters. Wildlife cruises leave here for Kenai Fjords National Park and there’s also fantastic hiking nearby.

This isolated region is home to rainforests, glaciers, fjords, coastal mountains, whales, sea lions and seals. It’s busy in the summer months with cruise ships, but you can also get around using ferries, water taxis and float planes.

Kenai Fjords National Park is home to a diverse array of plants and animals such as black and brown bear and moose and in the glacial waters you’ll find sea lions and whales. Snow and ice cover 60 percent of the park and from the massive icefield, countless tidewater glaciers pour down to form stunning fjords and icebergs the size of small houses.

Ketchikan is a unique spot, the harbour hums with floatplanes, fishing boats and ferries and many buildings are built on stilts out over the water. Petersburg is the centre of Norwegian culture in Alaska. It has a scenic waterfront with many buildings decorated with flowery Norwegian rosemaling. Sitka has a Russian heritage which is evident with the architecture, like the onion domed churches. Skagway is scenic with its historic false-front shops, wooden sidewalks and restored buildings.

The varied terrain includes crystal clear rivers, lakes, tundra and alpine meadows. The opportunities for recreation in the park are near limitless and exist for all levels of fitness and outdoors expertise. Cars are only allowed as far as the entrance. To access the interior of the park you need to hop on the shuttle or narrated tour bus and if you’re lucky you might spot some wildlife such as grizzly and black bears, wolves, caribou, moose and Dall sheep.

40

The Homer Spit, four hours from Anchorage, is a hub of bustling activity during the summer. Head out on a charter boat to catch halibut or simply rent a rod to try your luck at the Homer Spit Lagoon, fondly known as the Fishing Hole. King salmon can be caught here from mid-May to the end of June, while silver salmon run in August.

Juneau, Alaska’s state capital, is a maze of narrow streets running past old storefronts and quaint houses left over from the town’s early gold mining days. Just a short drive from downtown is one of the city’s most iconic sites the Mendenhall Glacier. Here you can watch icebergs calve off its frozen face into Mendenhall Lake.

Alaska by Rail The Alaska Railroad spans more than 800 kilometres from the coast to Fairbanks, passing through alpine forests, coastal regions and two major mountain ranges. Using the Alaska Railroad’s four routes is a great way to see some of the country. There is the Denali Star, the flagship linking Anchorage to Fairbanks, the Coastal Classic that winds through the stretch of wilderness between Anchorage and Seward; The Glacier Discovery that travels from Anchorage south to Whittier and the Aurora Winter Train that travels between Anchorage and Fairbanks for an unforgettable journey into the land of the Northern Lights. With two classes of service, GoldStar Service and Adventure Class, you’ll enjoy large windows, knowledgeable Alaskan tour guides, open-air vestibules and onboard dining options.

Glacier Discovery

The Denali Star is Alaska Railroad’s flagship train which links Anchorage to Fairbanks. Along this route you’ll have numerous mountain views, including the incredible Alaska Range. Stops along the way include Talkeetna, a small town that is known for its world-class flightseeing and charming main street and Denali National Park and Preserve which is a must for anyone visiting Alaska. You may see the ‘big four’: grizzlies, moose, caribou and Dall sheep. This train operates daily from mid-May to midSeptember.

This local favourite travels 184 kilometres through the stretch of wilderness spanning from Anchorage to Seward. From Anchorage, the train winds along Turnagain Arm and through the backcountry wilderness of the Kenai Peninsula, massive glaciers and towering waterfalls can be seen along the way. Upon reaching Seward, the train arrives on the shores of Resurrection Bay, offering easy connections for you to explore Kenai Fjords National Park. This train operates daily from mid-May to mid-September.

Departing from Anchorage, the Glacier Discovery train stops at Girdwood and Portage before heading to the port town of Whittier – the starting point for exploring the Alaska Marine Highway and glacier day cruises. After leaving Whittier you’ll enter roadless backcountry before arriving at the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. If you’re looking for an adventure hop off here to enjoy hiking, rafting or ice climbing, otherwise stay onboard for the scenic ride to the Grandview region. Known as the Emerald Isle this is a place of spectacular scenic beauty and wilderness, but the real stars of Kodiak are its famous bears. Each year millions of salmon burst from the Bering Sea into the streams of Katmai National Park, making this a superb place for viewing bears. As the lodge is just a short walk to three viewing platforms right on the river, you can take your time and enjoy the surrounds and watch the bears at your leisure (after your bear briefing by a ranger!).
