Venice, Italy

France & Italy Whether you want to climb the Eiffel Tower or the Leaning Tower, these are a couple of dreamy countries bursting with cultural, historical and natural treasures. They have 90 UNESCO World Heritage-sites between them, from prehistoric decorated caves to fortified cities. They share the snowy French and Italian Alps, perfect for lovers of winter sports, and the Mediterranean coast along the glamourous South of France, Cote d’Azur, past colourful fishing villages piling down the cliffs of the Cinque Terre, breath-taking Amalfi Coast and the stylish island of Capri. They have cool microstates – Monaco, Andorra, Vatican and San Marino – small independent states dating back to the first millennium, and famous iconic cities full of history, showcased in magical architecture, ruins and cathedrals. Both countries have excellent train systems that deliver you to the heart of the main towns. Once you’ve feasted on the museums, art, shopping, it’s time to experience leisurely living in the countryside. Stay in a villa, or a castle, wander cobbled streets and rejoice at the gastronomic delights at every turn.

6 Tips for Your Holiday

There’s nothing quite as delicious as a real French croissant or fresh baguette. Dine at any auberge and a basket of sliced ‘pain’ will be endlessly replenished at your table. When in Italy, it’s all about rustic indulgence; little family-run restaurants where non-flashy décor is an indication that the food is not only sublime, but also authentic. Forget your carb woes and embrace pasta like an Italian; spaghetti is a daily pleasure you really can’t deny yourself.

1 / ART LOVERS UNITE Of course there’s the Louvre but there’s also Paris’ Musee D’Orsay. As well as the huge collection of artwork, this former Gare d’Orsay railway station is a stunning piece of art nouveau in itself. For convenience, purchase a ‘Skip the Line’ pass; it costs a little extra but you’ll be able to jump the queue, and if you’re in Paris on the first Sunday of the month, entry is free. In Italy, Florence can’t be outdone for its endless selection of art galleries, such as the Uffizi and Accademia, while in Rome, the works of Michelangelo are almost inescapable. For less commercialised arty hangouts, Mougins in the French Riviera is where Picasso spent the last 12 years of his life. It’s also where he famously painted on the walls of his hotel room, much to the fury of its owner.

4

3 / EAT LIKE THE LOCALS

2 / MARVEL AT HISTORIC ICONS When the sun shines on the Château Chenonceau it’s an enchanting spectacle of fairytale turrets and perfectly manicured flowerbeds. From the Loire Valley to southern France, a magic ambience also exists at Pont du Gard. This ancient Roman aqueduct is illuminated at night with dramatic effect. Historic relics can be sought throughout Europe, but nothing quite compares to Pompeii. From dusty roads to intricate tiles still adorning dilapidated walls, you’ll be overwhelmed by pockets of history.

5 / BECOME A WINE CONNOISSEUR Regardless of whether your palette is accustomed to a sharp Chablis or a Pinot Noir, the vineyards that blanket France and Italy are a spectacle in themselves. In France’s countryside you’ll find hearty reds in Bordeaux and the charming town of St Émilion, whereas lovers of a lighter red will enjoy Beaujolais; its subtle yet refreshing characteristics perfectly complement a long lazy lunch. Chianti is found in Italy’s much loved Tuscany region and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is another famed red from the region. And then there’s Champagne, which somehow tastes even more exquisite when served against a beautiful Champagne backdrop.

4 / BE YOUR OWN SKIPPER Is there anything better than commandeering your own boat, adopting the role of captain and taking to the water with no fixed itinerary? In a country connected by canals, a great way to discover France is from the unique perspective of its serene waterways. Ideal for couples, families and groups of friends, acquire a vessel with a flying bridge (external navigational controls) so you can be the skipper as well as part of the social experience. If France has canals, then Italy has Venice; replete with a romantic assortment of palaces, squares, churches and bridges.

6 / KIWI CONNECTION You'll receive a warm welcome everywhere in France, but nowhere more so than Le Quesnoy. A small commune in the north, Germans held this township captive for the majority of WWI. That was until the New Zealand division seized it back; an act the residents (both past and present) have never forgotten. You'll find streets named after New Zealand places and even a primary school bearing the name of a Kiwi soldier. Almost one hundred years after Le Quesnoy's freeing, you won't find a more poignant place to commemorate the French NZ connection. In Italy, a small city called Cassino is where NZ soldiers fought for the liberation of its historic hilltop abbey, Monte Cassino in WWII. Today the monastery stands fully re-built, but the atmosphere attests to a traumatic past.

5

What’s your style? Kiwis love to travel. We pride ourselves on our friendly, outgoing nature and when we travel, we like nothing better than striking up a conversation with the locals - it's how we really connect with a destination. It's often hard to do this when you're staying in a hotel. That's why we're such great fans of more unique, boutique-style accommodation options. This style of accommodation is great if you like to get off the beaten track and live amongst the locals. Throughout France and Italy there are hundreds of properties to choose from, ranging from private apartments to villas and even châteaux.

HOTEL Traditional and serviced, if you want a truly relaxed break where everything is done for you, booking a hotel is the way to go. Serviced daily, you’ll return to a lovely clean bathroom, fluffy towels, a made bed and possibly a chocky on your pillow. Many hotels are well facilitated with a restaurant, bar, pool or gym, and because there’s such a huge variety of price and standards/star-rating, it's important to search out the right hotel to suit your needs.

APARTMENT If you’re looking for greater independence, apartments are fully equipped with facilities such as kitchen and laundry and more space. They’re usually located in the heart of the neighbourhood so you can choose to eat out at local restaurants or visit the market for some fresh produce before a relaxing night in. Perfect for longer stays but also ideal for families and groups of friends who want a little extra privacy.

6

Torbole, Lake Garda, Italy

CHÂTEAU VILLA Press pause and catch your breath as you take the time to appreciate the simpler things in life by renting a villa in France or Italy. These types of holidays are great for people who like to take each day as it comes; staying put for a week or two at a time and living like a local. Dally over a meal as you reconnect with family and friends, munch on a crusty baguette beside your pool, and let languid afternoons melt into lazy evenings over a bottle of Chianti. Visit charming markets and meander from sight to sight, exploring nearby towns and villages.

When you think of France, chances are one of the things to come to mind is a magnificent château, surrounded by immaculate gardens and grounds. They retain a tangible atmosphere of past grandeur that brings out the romantic in most people and the good news is, it’s easier than you think to live like a king or queen. Many of these magical châteaux are now hotels offering you the chance to peek into the past while enjoying modern facilities like spas and gyms, swimming pools and tennis courts. They’re scattered through the country so perfect for a selfdrive royal discovery.

PRIVATE APARTMENT This is the most authentic way to see Paris. You will have Parisian neighbours and gain a better understanding of what it is like to live in Paris. If you like the idea of being self-sufficient, then staying independently is a unique way to experience Paris and is perfect for the seasoned traveller who does not require hotels services such as house-keeping or concierge. 7

wines and gourmet food. It’s the largest country in Western Europe so there’s a province for everyone and a city for every taste. The Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines, the Pyrenées forming a border with Spain, the Alps shared with Italy and Switzerland, and rivers including the legendary Loire and Rhine, ensure stunning landscapes.

From this land have risen historical figures such as Joan of Arc, Napoléon and the Sun King, Louis XIV. France breathes history but bursts with artistic accomplishment too – stand and feel the magic of scenes captured by renowned painters such as Monet, Cézanne and Picasso. The land too has given us Champagne and burgundy wines, truffles and Camembert. Markets overflow with glowing peaches and cherries, and chefs transform this bounty into haute cuisine. Paris, the city of light and the French capital is, its residents believe, the heart of France. With the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Seine River, who can blame them for being biased? But follow the French into the countryside and you’ll find a different world of stone villages, fields of lavender, vineyards and seaside playgrounds of the rich and famous.

Paris What other city can conjure up romance, elegance and chic sophistication like Paris? This is a city to savour – whether from high among the lattice work of the Eiffel Tower or from a pavement café with a glass of Bordeaux in hand. The treasures of the Louvre, the glories of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe and the elegant Champs Elysées – all are essential Paris. But be prepared to detour – watch a game of boules in the Jardin de Luxembourg or dither between a rich, custardy millefeuille and a flaky pain au chocolat at a nearby pâtisserie. Watch artists at work near the Sacré-Coeur Basilica and marvel at the Impressionist masterpieces in the Musée d’Orsay. Peoplewatch in a side walk café and when the sun sets, fall in love with Paris all over again.

Our favourite things to see and do The Paris Museum Pass – A sightseer’s best friend, allowing entry as many times as you wish to over 60 museums and monuments in and around Paris. Check out the crazy traffic from the Arc de Triomphe, have Mona Lisa’s eyes follow you at the Louvre and imagine times gone by at Château de Fontainebleau.

Canal St Martin – With its old iron footbridge, Canal St Martin was made famous in the movie Amelie and is lined with cafés and restaurants and is a great place to hang out.

Tour Montparnasse – For stunning views of Paris. From here you can see all the major sights, and it is far less crowded than the Eiffel Tower.

Père-Lachaise Cemetery – Said to be the world’s most visited graveyard and some of the most frequented graves are those of Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Chopin and Oscar Wilde. Get a free map on the way at the conservation office just inside the main entrance off Boulevard de Menilmontant.

Saint Chapelle – Not far from the Notre Dame, Saint Chapelle is a spectacular cathedral with the most amazing stained glass windows.

Three Prices to Pay in France – At a café stand at the bar like Beziers

a local (the most economical). Sit down inside the café and the price goes up, and if you sit outside on the footpath the cost is even higher, but worth it for the people watching.

Paris is Full of Surprises – Problem is that you might miss them if you don’t know where to look. There are plenty of guides that give interesting ideas for self-guided walks. Investing in a set of guide cards or a book is well worth it. The “City Walks” series are great and cost from about $40. If self-guided isn’t for you, your travel consultant has plenty of guided options.

Cruising the Coastal Road – If you’ve got your own wheels then the drive along the coast between Cannes and Menton is fabulous. Don’t miss the Cap d’Antibes, dotted with impressive villas.

Cours Saleya – This is a gorgeous baroque square in the old town that is the setting for a great flower and vege market. Surrounded with cafés and restaurants, it is a really vibrant spot for lunch.

lovingly prepared pasta, and see it in action as the Italians promenade across their piazzas, talking with their hands. Only the most hard-hearted of visitors can fail to be caught up in the Italian love of life.

In its capital of Rome and its fashion and business powerhouse of Milan, life is lived at a fast pace and often via a host of speeding Vespas. Life flows through Venice via its canals and into its grand palaces and shines from the artworks housed in the living museum that is the renaissance jewel of Florence. Deep in the countryside, however, Italian life slows down a little – here there is time to savour a new wine, linger over lunch under the vines, and contemplate a field of sunflowers. There’s something timeless about a Tuscan landscape of hilltop towns, stately cypress and olive groves, and a sense of history is palpable in the ruins of Pompeii and in Rome’s eerie Colosseum. On the coast, villages washed in pastel colours cling to cliffs; and in the Italian Alps, elegant villas overlook tranquil lakes. No wonder Italy was home to so many inspired painters and composers. La Dolce Vita, living the sweet life!

Rome An espresso shot at breakfast before treading the nearly 2000-year-old steps in the Colosseum, a slice of gourmet pizza served among jostling, exquisitely dressed Romans, a gelato in delectable Piazza Navona, ravioli for dinner near the Spanish Steps: the Romans love to eat and drink, so when in Rome… There is so much history to discover in Rome, and in the world’s tiniest state that lies within it: the Vatican City. Follow in the ghostly sandalled footsteps of a Roman senator through the Forum or tread the marble floors in the wake of the Popes in St Peter’s Basilica. A few steps off the tourist trail and you’ll find another side of Rome: a black-clad Italian ‘mamma’ hanging out the washing, and children running home with the daily fresh bread.

Our favourite things to see and do Trastevere – A maze of alleyways, terracotta coloured buildings and restaurant-lined cafés. It is where the Romans go for an evening out and is great fun.

The Pantheon – Often missed but a must-see between Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain. Believed to be the oldest building in Rome dating back to 27BC, the only light into the church is from the opening in the ceiling dome.

St Peter’s Basilica – Make the climb to the top as the views it offers of Rome and the Piazza San Pietro are breath-taking.

Papal Audience – There are generally thousands of people keen to see the Pope and we therefore recommend booking the Papal Audience Tour. You will be sure to arrive at St Peter’s Square in plenty of time for the Pope’s blessing, avoid queues and get a good position.

Catacombs – The underground burial site of early Christians dating back to the second century, you will see the bones of people buried there.

Vatican Museums – If you don’t attend the Papal audience on a Wednesday morning then this is a great time to visit the Vatican Museums, as you’ll avoid the crowds. Capri

Ferrari – For those car enthusiasts – visit the Ferrari Shop on Via Tomacelli where you can buy a key ring for about EUR100 or a baby blanket for EUR240!

Villa Borghese – When you feel like taking a break from the monuments and museums, this vast park overlooking the city has relaxing walks around the lake. It's a great spot to take a picnic, lie on the grass and enjoy the sunset over Rome.

Venice To visit Venice is to step into a dream. It seems unreal to be in a city where the streets are canals, and snatches of Italian opera sung by gondoliers waft down narrow lanes. Newcomers are usually openmouthed as they are swept along the Grand Canal for the first time, past crumbling palaces, bobbing gondolas and domed churches. After you’ve seen the main sights, lose yourself along the paths that cling to the canal-sides or take a water taxi to one of the many islands. For a truly authentic Venetian meal, opt for a superb seafood risotto in one of the tiny bacari (or pubs) frequented by the locals.

Our favourite things to see and do Doge’s Palace – This was the seat of the government of Venice for centuries and is one of the city’s most famous buildings. If you book a guided tour you can follow in the footsteps of the leaders of Venice who wouldn’t use the public doors and stairways but would slip through passageways and secret entrances. Skip the Line is a must for this sight.

San Marco Piazza – Take a walking tour through this square, surrounded by stunning architecture. Make sure you visit at night too, when it’s beautifully lit up. Splash out on a glass of wine, listen to the orchestras and absorb the incredible atmosphere.

Rialto Food Market – Locals have depended on these markets for fresh fruit, veges and fish since 1097! They’re open at dawn so the best photo opportunities are early in the morning when it is really bustling.

Accademia Galleries – For a complete overview of Venetian art history from the 14th–18th century. On a Tuesday you can also visit the warehouses on the top floor of the monastery designed by Palladio. If modern art is more your cup of tea, then check out the Peggy Guggenheim Museum.

Gondola Ride – A magical way to admire the romantic waterways of Venice is from a gondola, cruising the secluded waterways and passing under tiny bridges, look up at old palaces and see their reflections.

Cicchetti and Wine in the Jewish Ghetto – Wander through the charming streets of the Jewish Ghetto passing by Synagogues and mask-making workshops. Stop at bàcari to savour cicchetti, traditional Venetian appetizers, which you can wash down with a glass or two of local wine.

Murano, Burano and Torcello – Three islands nearby, all different and all worth a look. Torcello is uninhabited and has an extraordinary mosaic of the Last Judgement in its cathedral. Murano is the island for glass – gorgeous coloured vases, glassware, dishes, jewellery. Burano is renowned for its lace and brightly painted houses.

6

A magnificent historical building located near St Mark's Square, and in the heart of Venice. It houses four elegant, cosy apartments located on the various floors of the Palazzo. All are named after four famous artists that worked for the Republic of Venice; Carpaccio, Giorgione, Tintoretto and Tiepolo.

Florence The birthplace of the Renaissance; a city overflowing with art and astounding architecture, Florence is almost overwhelming in its riches. Michelangelo’s David, Botticelli’s Venus and Giotto’s Madonnas: you’ll want to feast your eyes on all of them. Find a perch among the sculptures in the 14th century Loggia della Signoria near the Uffizi Gallery and enjoy the buskers, or windowshop along the 13th century Ponte Vecchio, the bridge across the Arno River that is lined with glittering jewellery shops. People-watch outside the Duomo, Florence’s extraordinary marble cathedral.

Our favourite things to see and do Art – A great place for art buffs to see some fabulous artworks. Two of the main galleries are the Uffizi and Accademia. Book a combo ticket with a guide to learn about the works. These galleries house famous works such as Michelangelo’s David (Accademia) and Botticelli’s The Birth of Venice (Uffizi).

Markets – If you’re after leather, head to the San Lorenzo Markets for bags and jackets. For a real foodie market check out the Sant’ Ambrogio market, it’s a great spot to either have lunch or pick up goodies for a picnic.

The Duomo – Finished around 1367, the cathedral is decorated in pink, white and green marble and stands proudly above the surrounding buildings. Take a tour of the Baptistry secret passages.

Giotto’s Bell Tower – Attached to the Duomo, the 400 odd steps to the top can be hard work (and is not for those with a fear of tight spaces as it is narrow in places) but the view over Florence from the top is superb.

Piazzale Michelangelo – About a 20 minute walk from the Duomo (or a short bus ride) this is half piazza and half parking lot BUT it is a great spot for fantastic views over Florence and the Arno Valley.

Ponte Vecchio – The only bridge in Florence to have been spared by German bombs in WWII, it is lined with jewellery stores, art galleries and souvenir shops, and most definitely worth a wander across. It’s a photographer’s delight!

Leaning Tower of Pisa – About an hour’s drive out of Florence through the picturesque Tuscan countryside, you arrive in Pisa. Explore the surrounding remarkable buildings and have your photo taken holding up the tower.

Siena, San Gimignano and Greve – See some of the nearby countryside and the rolling hills of Chianti on a day tour to a hilltop town.

Florence Palazzo Vecchio and Arnolfo Tower Sunset Tour – As the sun goes down walk around the one-time fortress, Palazzo Vecchio and hear tales of its past. Admire the Hall of The Five Hundred and soak up magical sunset city views from the battlements and Arnolfo Tower.

Cinque Terre & Ligurian Coast Decades ago the five villages that comprise the Cinque Terre had no road access. Clinging to cliffs overlooking the azure Mediterranean, their houses were an artist’s palette of terracottas and creams. Then the first tourists arrived and now the walking tracks that connect the five are almost always thronged with visitors, though the villages retain their postcard-perfect charm. It is possible to walk between the northernmost village of Monterosso and Riomaggiore in the south in one day, but it’s far better to take your time, stay in one village for a few days and explore the villages on foot. If you don’t fancy the walk, there are roads now (nervous drivers beware!) or more preferably you can ride the local train. For an entirely different view, take to the sea on the ferry.

Corniglia

Our favourite things to see and do Il Gigante – Carved into the cliffs in Monterosso is the 14 metre high statue of Neptune holding the waves at bay. Due to wartime bombing and rough seas he lost his arms, trident and the giant seashell he held.

Riomaggiore Murals – These striking murals paint a picture of life in the Cinque Terre and are situated outside the train station. The murals are to glorify the unknown workers who constructed all of the dry stone walls and terracing that is so distinctive to the area.

Walking the Coastal Path – This links the villages, but be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water as it is not sold along the route. Get an early start to avoid the heat and the crowds. Try the Best Basil Pesto – This is the home of pesto and it’s generously served in restaurants with two different types of pasta that are local to the area (trofie – short dense twists or trenette – long flat with a ruffle on the edges) There is also pesto lasagna!

PIEDMONT

Rest at one of the Spectacular Terraced Vineyards – Check out the local wine and also the delicious limoncello, enjoy an accompanying antipasto platter while soaking up the atmosphere.

Sip a Sciacchetra – A rare sweet white wine unique to the Cinque Terre. It’s delicious especially with creamy gorgonzola cheese.

Taste the Local Anchovies – These are caught along the coast, then salted and barrelled in the bay by the woman of the Cinque Terre.

Swimming on the Cinque Terre – While the Cinque Terre is not famous for its long white beaches, the coastline is full of small bays and the clear Ligurian Sea. Manarola you can sunbathe on the rocks then dive off into the deep waters; Vernazza has a small sandy beach good for kids, or jump off the rocks at the end of the harbour; Monterosso has a sandy, pebbly beach great for families.

Visit Portofino for the Day – Take the train to Santa Margherita, then the local bus from directly outside the station.

Cinque Terre & Ligurian Coast

A Taste of Cinque Terre 4 days/3 nights Day 1: La Spezia – Riomaggiore (17km) Transfer from La Spezia to Riomaggiore by private vehicle and spend the rest of the day exploring, hike up to the top of town for panoramic views along the coast and glistening sea-views through the lemon trees. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner at your hotel this evening. Day 2: Cinque Terre Use your Cinque Terre Card to explore this beautiful area at your own pace. With vineyards, olive groves and delightful houses, each of the villages exudes its own authentic charm. Train to Corniglia, the smallest least touristy village high up on the cliff 350 step descent to the water. Next stop’s Manarola, the most iconic photo is of the colourful houses cascading down the rock to the little harbour. You can ferry back from here or catch the train. Day 3: Cinque Terre Today train to the northmost village of Monterosso. Fuel up with a gelato on the sandy beach before trekking to Vernazza. There is a strenuous climb at the start but you’ll be rewarded with the most stunning views walking along the cliff path towards Vernazza. This is the most picturesque village with a small sandy beach but can get very overcrowded in summer.

Getting there & around

When to go & where to stay

The Cinque Terre Card is compulsory and gives you access to the Park area. Prices start from EUR7.50 as a 1, 2, 3 day pass and are available locally from the National Park offices situated outside the train stations of any of the five villages.

Don’t underestimate the heat in summer and the crowds on weekends. The best time to visit is between April and October when there are local boats linking many of the villages and providing a good alternative to experience this coastal region. We suggest walking one way and boating back. June and August tend to be very touristy so try going in spring or autumn to avoid crowds. Winter can become quite cold and some facilities are shut. If the trails get too wet they are closed for safety reasons. Currently the trails between Corniglia and Riomaggiore are closed.

The train is the best way to get to the Cinque Terre from either La Spezia or Levanto and for an additional EUR8 per person you get unlimited 2nd class train travel and access to the five villages in between. Cars are not allowed beyond the village entrances. You can either leave it in La Spezia or Levanto or park at the top of the villages. These parks are small, expensive and often full in summer. A lovely way to arrive is by ferry from La Spezia or Levanto if you’re visiting March to October, but these can be suspended in rough weather and are an additional cost to the Cinque Terre Card.

Decide if you would prefer to stay inside the National Park, on the Cinque Terre, or outside of the National Park, in Levanto to the north or La Spezia to the south. Accommodation on the Cinque Terre is very limited and fills up quickly. In Monterosso or Riomaggiore you can pre book hotel style accommodation. The town of Levanto has more hotels to choose from and there are B&Bs scattered throughout the region.

Day 4: Riomaggiore – La Spezia (17km) The tour ends after breakfast with a private transfer to La Spezia.

Inclusions: • • • • • • •

Private transfer La Spezia/Riomaggiore round trip 3 nights accommodation Breakfast daily 1 dinner Shopping card for Brugnato 5Terre Outlet Discounts at La Spezia museums 2 day Cinque Terre Card including map of the area, access to all trekking paths, train and boat schedules, unlimited train travel on the Levanto – Cinque Terre – La Spezia line (regional train 2nd class)

Milan High among the spires of Milan’s 500-year-old cathedral is a great spot to view Italy’s dynamic financial hub, the cathedral in its café-lined piazza lies at the heart of Milan. Close by is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the designer nirvana lies in the aptly named Quadrilatero (Golden Quadrilateral) where Prada, Valentino, Gucci and more await. Gaze at Leonardo’s Last Supper and be dazzled at La Scala, one of the world’s greatest opera houses. Milan also offers access to Verona, with its Roman arena and romantic associations with Romeo and Juliet. To the north of Milan lies Lakes Como, Lugano and Maggiore, nestled at the foot of the Italian Alps. Sip wine, stroll beside the palazzi of the rich and famous, and share the high-flyers’ million-dollar views.

Our favourite things to see and do The Last Supper – Visit Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece ‘The Last Supper’ in the refectory of the 15th century Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Fashion Week – The Spring/Summer event is held in February-March and the Autumn/ Winter event is held in September-October of each year. Milan is one long catwalk for the elegant and sophisticated, and you can join them in the restaurants and clubs buzzing with attitude and glamour.

The Terraces of the Cathedral – The Terraces on the roof of the cathedral have a surface of 8,000 m2 which is covered by marble. Climb the 201 steps to the top, and once there you will have a breath-taking view of the city; with good weather you can even see the Italian and Swiss Alps. Admire magnificent arches, the 135 pinnacles of the cathedral, the numerous statues and breathe in the peaceful atmosphere over this constantly active city.

Navigli District – There is a system of canals through Milan and the oldest one, Naviglio Grande, is bustling with canal-side cafés, old-fashioned gelaterie (ice-cream shops), boutiques, artists of Milan, restaurants and old moored barges fitted out as bars.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II – This elegant shopping arcade is considered to be one of the main centres for shopping in Milan and is one of the most beautiful covered galleries in Europe.

Day trip to the Lakes – The magnificent Lake District is dotted with dozens of colourful small towns along the shorelines with spectacular mountain scenery as their backdrops. There is a dependable ferry service which will shuffle you from town to town.

Parco Sempione – A beautiful park that has a little something for everyone. The grounds are dappled with ponds and enchanting bridges; find a relaxing spot on the grass and watch the kids play on the playgrounds.

Via Fauche – Especially for the fashionistas, at these markets you will find discounted clothes and shoes from the most prestigious Italian stylists.

Amalfi Coast South of Naples lies a coastline of dramatic cliffs, precariously perched fishing villages and the ever-present shimmering Mediterranean. This is the Amalfi Coast, which has been enticing visitors for decades to its tiny beaches and chic resort towns such as Sorrento and Positano and its island of Capri. If you are driving the coast, beware – this is no place for motorists with no head for heights, but adrenaline junkies will love the hairpin bends and vertical drops. It’s little different in the towns that cling to the hillsides, where often steep steps provide the only access to hotels and restaurants with terraces that seem to float between sea and sky. Nestle yourself into one of the coastal villages like Ravello or tiny Furore, kick back, relax and enjoy the heady views.

Our favourite things to see and do Capri – Take the short boat ride from Sorrento to Capri, steeped in myths and Roman history. Head to Piccola Marina following winding lanes, then wander down a precipitous flight of steps to La Canzone del Mare right by the seaside and visited by Capri’s rich and famous.

Ravello – Enjoy tranquility in Ravello’s exquisite gardens and immerse yourself in the local village life. Villa Rufolo was built on an existing Roman structure, with a 30 metre high tower that overlooks Piazza Duomo. The Wagner Symphonic Music Festival takes place in the garden in July.

Furore – This tiny village is a good base from which to tackle Amalfi Coast walks with names like The Fishing Vixen. A cluster of old fishermen houses look like they have been glued to the cliffs. This is a dramatic and unique part of the Amalfi Coast.

Walk Of The Gods – Take a walking tour along the ancient pathways, winding along shoreline cliffs from coastal towns through rustic woodland, and up to beautiful villages perched on craggy peaks. You can go beyond the crowds – just make sure you are reasonably fit!

Limoncello – The golden treasure of Amalfi. Locals affectionately call it sunshine wine and serve it chilled, like summer champagne. Walk the streets of Amalfi, from the bustling tourist district to the small villages dotting the coastline, and you will see dozens of shops displaying beautifully shaped bottles of homemade limoncello.

ROME

Public Transport – Public transport along the coast is cheap and fairly

efficient. Blue buses run from Salerno to Amalfi, and from Amalfi to Sorrento and Ravello. There is a local service within the towns. Ferries connect the principal towns of the Amalfi Coast and can be quicker than buses.

Hotel Miramalfi, Amalfi

Art Hotel Pasitea, Positano

Maison La Minervetta, Sorrento

This family owned hotel, built in the 1950s, got its name from when the owner stood on the terrace and emotionally said, “Mira... Amal!” or “Look... Amalfi!”. The same family still owns the hotel and you’ll know what he meant when you see the spectacular vista. Rooms have views out to sea and there’s a great pool perched on top of the rocks.

Located dramatically on the cliffs of Positano, offering spectacular views from every room's private balcony to the Mediterranean Sea. Within walking distance of the Fornillo Beach and Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The hotel is typical of the Mediterranean architecture of white and lava stone decorations with wrought iron furniture.

Family owned and operated since the 1950s, this gorgeous, Mediterranean style hotel has been fully restored and all rooms have sea views. Perched on a ridge overlooking the Bay of Naples, it is just 15 minutes walk to the centre of the town and you can connect to the famous fishing village, Marina Grande, via its own private staircase.

Take to the Road There’s a lot to be said for having your own wheels on holiday. You can drive down that inviting country lane or cute village you’ve spied. Driving in a foreign country is not so different to driving in New Zealand. You soon get used to driving on the other side, and the major roads let you cover long distances in good time. If you opt for the minor roads, you’ll avoid the tolls and see much more of the countryside. These days you don’t even have to worry about those relationship-testing moments where the navigator mutters “I think that was our exit…” as you race past an off ramp. For a little extra, you can have a slightly bossy but very knowledgeable GPS system that’ll tell you exactly how to get to where you’re going. There’s a huge range of car types on offer, and if you’re worried about your carbon footprint you can even opt for a more eco-friendly diesel or hybrid model. If you’re going to be on the road for a longer period of time, you should consider a lease arrangement – you’ll get a brand new car with full factory warranty plus the usual benefits of a rental car such as unlimited kilometres and comprehensive insurance. Once all that’s sorted, you’re ready to hit the road!

Touring by Rental Car Driving in Europe In Europe the free wheeling experience becomes more challenging with driving on the right hand side of the road. Don’t be put off, roads and autobahns are well surfaced and clearly signposted. Most major roads do have tolls so it is often cheaper and more scenic to stay on the secondary roads. Choosing your Rental Car Take into consideration the size of the vehicle you require. We strongly recommend a compact size car for two adults. If the vehicle is to be used for day touring from a central base and not for transporting your luggage, a smaller vehicle may be adequate. We suggest you book your car before leaving home as this will save money and ensure you get the car of your choice.

Emergency Roadside Assistance

Adventure by Motorhome Just imagine those quaint villages, the fresh artisan-produced food and friendly locals waiting to be dazzled by your schoolhouse language skills. What a pity you have to dash past it all on the motorway, hurtling towards the next major city on the itinerary. Next time you’ll do it differently; next time you’ll seek out those locals and their delicious cuisine; next time you’ll avoid the eight lane autobahn; next time you won’t take a map or plan an itinerary; next time you’ll sleep in the same bed every night but have a different view out of your window each day; or if it’s really special, the view will stay the same for a week; next time it’ll be up to you.

Cruising

The Waterways

Paris, France

Canal Boating – Locaboat Experience the stunning scenery, great food and fascinating culture of France and Italy from the comfort of your Pénichette. Pénichettes are exclusively custom-built for Locaboat, designed to transport you from village-to-village and from lock-to-lock in easy style. The boats range from the Classic, great for couples, to the Flying Bridge with inside and outside steering positions. Stop off to explore castles and vineyards, swimming spots and cycle routes.

Holiday Tips for your Locaboat • We recommend a ‘flying bridge’ as this enables better vision whilst cruising and provides another great deck area for enjoying the long summer nights. • Electricity on the boat is operated by DC power so don’t forget an adaptor for charging your mobiles and digital cameras. • Remember to hire a bicycle and ask for a basket, it’s great for bringing home baguettes and wine. • When locking up or locking down, remember to move as far forward in the lock as possible and always moor at bow and stern. This allows room for other boats in the lock and means there is no chance of tipping over when the water level changes. • It’s an excellent idea to bring (or buy at the Base) a pair of gloves to protect your hands when going through the locks.

Midi and Camargue

Loire Valley

8 days/7 nights

8 days/7 nights

Explore Southern France by travelling along the Canal du Midi. This canal is a World Heritage-site and a marvel of 17th century civil engineering. It winds through a landscape of vines, cypresses and pine trees. The air is scented with the lovely aroma of flowers, and cicadas and crickets shrill all around. A real highlight is the sight of the towers of Carcassonne on the skyline.

Cruise along historic canals, admiring medieval abbeys and villages dotted along the banks. The scenery is varied and you will pass by forests, vineyards, timbered houses and wine producing villages. This region is also famous for its châteaux and it is a glorious sight to see them either close to the edge of the canal or further in the distance – just jump on your bike to get a closer look.

• Always make use of the fresh water and power at moorings along the way. Keeping topped up saves the worry of running out. • No experience is required as Locaboat will give you a full induction before departure. • Book a larger boat than needed, this means more room to store your luggage.

Canal Boating – Le Boat Ahoy independent travellers! This is your chance to captain your own boat and cruise Europe’s canals at your own pace. Whether you are a family, a couple or a group, there’s a boat for you all. The Vision and Horizon fleets provide a practical layout and larger sundeck, ideal for families and couples. If you are travelling in a group of 6-10 people, consider the new Horizon 5 and Horizon 4 cruisers, offering bright and spacious interior living space and large outside sundecks! Above all, this is about slowing down and seeing Europe from a different perspective.

Things to consider on Self-Drive Boats • No experience is required to enjoy a selfdrive boating holiday. Prior to departure a captain’s handbook is provided and a demonstration is given at the base. • All boats are fully equipped for maximum comfort and can accommodate groups as small as 2 people and as big as 12. • Most locks are automatic and operated by a lock keeper, but some are manual and on average take approximately 20 minutes to go through. • Generally you can moor anywhere you want along the public canals and river ways. There are some restrictions and private areas but finding free moorings is not a problem.
