General Information Accommodation Ratings To assist with the selection of your Cook Island accommodation we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. These are personal ratings offered by our people from their own experience and should therefore be used as a guide only. These ratings may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Standard rooms, clean and comfortable usually with basic furnishings and private en suites. Typically most properties would include a restaurant and bar but have a limited range of other guest facilities and services. Moderate accommodation with a reasonable range of room facilities and good level of comfort usually with a wide range of recreational and leisure activities available for guest enjoyment. Superior accommodation offering exceptional level of comfort in rooms with quality furnishings and fixtures. There tends to be greater attention to personalised service and strong focus on quality food and beverages. First class accommodation including small and stylish boutique properties. Accommodation in this rating offer the very best services with detailed focus on high customer satisfaction and are usually located in prime locations. They are considered the ultimate accommodation in the Cook Islands. A half star is noted when the level of service and facilities falls between two grades. Grading accommodation can be quite subjective and generally speaking the standard and services will be in line with the price paid. Please check with your travel consultant to ensure you get the accommodation that best fits your needs. Child Policy: Please note bedding configuration varies between properties and in some cases with different room types within a property. Some hotels also offer family bonuses and specials. Your travel consultant will help you choose the hotel to best suit you and your family's needs. Look out for our “gems” of information scattered throughout our Cook Islands brochure.

6 TIPS for your

C ook Islands Holiday

Snorkels & Flippers

Food, Food, Food

Explore on wheels

From giant trevally to reef fish, Rarotonga’s underwater odyssey is replete with curiosities.

It’s a small island, but Raro delivers a big feast of flavours. With so many restaurants in walking distance, take advantage of beachside shacks, burger joints and water-fringing bistros.

Don’t get caught in a Raro downpour – hire a car and follow the coastal road come rain or shine. With only 32 kilometres of road circumnavigating the island, it only takes about an hour to get around.

We recommend The Mooring Restaurant off the Main Road in Avana, near Muri. With a reputation that precedes itself, believe the hype, because the food here is unrivalled. From the freshest shellfish to crumbed Mahi and thick milkshakes, you’ll want to return time and time again.

Alternatively, head inland along the Ara Metua coral road to see some of the islands lush plantations. Discover deserted white sand beaches and local villages, stopping for lunch at sandy cafés and dinner at one of the island’s many restaurants.

Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve (Rarotonga’s premier snorkelling location), offers safe snorkelling and zero coral. Even at low tide, the water is deep enough to explore; simply pick up a snorkelling map from the Activities Centre. Beginners can learn to snorkel in a fresh water pool before enjoying the marine’s abundance of protected (often fearless) creatures. Then there’s Tikioki - ‘Fruits of Rarotonga’, which is one of the island’s permanent marine parks, with a nearby café for post-snorkelling refreshments. Blackrock, which is considered one of the calmest places to snorkel in Rarotonga is great for families with kids, it also has a BBQ area. If you are an avid snorkeller you may want to pack your own snorkelling gear before you leave.

2

For an authentic Rarotongan experience, ‘island nights’ feature on various nights at different resorts. Enjoy local customs and an island feast known as an Umukai. Try the Ika Mata: White fish marinated in lime juice and served with tomatoes, onion, cucumber and coconut cream.

Drivers will need to go to the Police Station in town (closed Sundays) to get a Cook Island’s driver’s license for $30. Take your passport with you. Scooters are also available. You will need to provide proof of your current NZ drivers licence, then take a test that involves riding up and down the street without falling off! Helmets are compulsory.

Island Hopping

Attend a Sunday Service

Markets

For an even slower pace of life, fly 45 minutes north of Rarotonga to the laid-back island of Aitutaki.

Sunday is dedicated to church, with certain bars, restaurants and establishments closed. It’s also a great opportunity to attend a Sunday service; an experience strongly encouraged by the locals.

Saturday is the main day for island markets.

Allow a stay of at least three days to ensure you experience the best Aitutaki has to offer, or book a day trip aboard the Titi Ai Tonga catamaran. Tours include flights, lunch, snorkelling and of course, an idyllic cruise skimming the shores of Aitutaki’s dazzling lagoon. One of Aitutaki’s most pristine islets is One Foot Island; a visually stunning nugget of nirvana. Take your passport because you can have it stamped at the world’s tiniest post office! And if you’re after something other than beach, enjoy an Aitutaki safari tour. Guided by locals, this is an educational insight into the island’s history, onboard a 4WD Land Rover.

You’ll be bowled over by the singing, energy and atmosphere. Try the Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC) in Avarua, a white coral building that dates back to 1853. A warm welcome is guaranteed, and a respectful dress code much appreciated. Cover your shoulders and knees, and ladies, it’s the perfect occasion to pull out your fanciest hat! If you’d like, take a few coins to donate at morning tea.

Punanga Nui Cultural Market is a must-do for unique and well-priced Pacifica pieces, including clothing, handicrafts and black pearls. Meet the artists who create the items and stay refreshed with a fresh nu (coconut with a straw). Although open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm, Saturday is the main market day with more stalls and live music performed on the stage, coming to an end around 2pm. For a delicious selection of food, Muri Beach night market boasts island specialities at very reasonable prices. From curries to locally baked cakes, entertainers and stage singers.

in the Cook Islands, just under four hours by air from New Zealand. Forget long arrival procedures and complex transfers – slipping into Island life here could not be easier. Step off the plane in Rarotonga to a song of greeting and an ei (flower garland) welcome; very soon you will be relaxing at your accommodation – because although ‘Raro’ is the biggest of the Cooks, it is really quite small. Villages dot the shoreline, and the main town, Avarua, occupies the top end of this almost appleshaped island. It’s probably the most easy-going national capital you’ll ever visit, and as well as a good market, has interesting boutiques and eateries. Woven bags and jewellery are two top buys here. Chances are you’ll be staying on Raro for at least part of your visit, so do get out and explore. It has classically gorgeous lagoon beaches but also a mountainous, forest-clad interior that’s perfect for visitors wanting a little adventure. And, with a bus that circles the coast in both directions, it’s very easy to get from place to place. Rarotonga is the stepping stone to the outer islands – these are scattered across two million squares of the Pacific, and while some lie less than an hour’s flight away, the most isolated and pristine are accessible only by sea. Among those easily reached by air and catering for visitors are Aitutaki with its astoundingly beautiful lagoon, Atiu, Mangaia and Ma’uke. Wherever you are you’ll experience the Cook Islanders’ deep sense of hospitality and you’ll quickly become accustomed to the relaxed pace. Explore, enjoy the ambience, have a drink with the locals and join them to sing hymns on a Sunday: unforgettable. We can’t imagine anyone failing to fall in love with these friendly, gentle and very beautiful islands. They are one of the most charming places on earth. Rich in Polynesian culture, they are also closely linked with New Zealand – and our dollar is used there, so there’s no currency exchange to worry about on arrival.

Experience The Cook Islands Our favourite things to see and do Island Night – This is a great way to experience the vibrant local culture. The major hotels put on an Island Night at least once a week, with traditional song and dance and an islandstyle feast known as an umukai.

Dining Out – Book your table on the grand verandah at Tamarind House and enjoy the finest food on Rarotonga, we recommend the seafood platter! Be sure to arrive in time to watch the sunset.

Wigmores Waterfall – On the eastern side of the island, a dirt road leads inland to Wigmore’s Waterfall, a lovely cascade dropping into a fresh, cool swimming pool.

Trader Jacks – No trip to Raro is complete without a visit to this old favourite bar and restaurant. Enjoy a local beer and great food with friendly staff in a relaxed setting.

Te Rua Manga (The Needle) – Head to Te Rua Manga, otherwise known as The Needle for the most amazing views over the island. The hike can be challenging in places and a certain level of fitness is required. It is best to climb the North to South track and on a sunny day as after rain the trail can be slippery. Best Brekkie on the Island – Indulge in the freshly made warm and crispy waffles at the Waffle Shack Restaurant. There’s a great selection of toppings, cream and fresh fruit on offer as well as delicious coffee. This busy spot is a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike and we guarantee once you’ve tried these moreish treats, you’ll be back for more.

Maire Nui Botanical Gardens – Stop off at these delightful botanical gardens on your ventures around the island. They contain many local plants and flowers as well as a cool shady retreat on a hot day. Don’t forget to stop in at the café for a refreshing beverage and bite to eat.

Experience the Outer Islands Authentic island life flourishes on the three remote volcanic and coral islands of Atiu, Mangaia and Ma’uke, all less than an hours flight from Rarotonga. Atiu is over 8 million years old, the third largest island in the Cooks. With its taro gardens, forests and tiny secluded sandy coves, it is steeped in legend and rich in rare birds. The island is famed for its handmade quilts and ukuleles. Mangaia is estimated at 18 million years old and said to be the oldest island in Pacific. Explore caves, take a 4WD safari or go deepsea fishing. The market sells shell necklaces, handwoven pandanus bags, and succulent fresh fruit. Ma’uke has caves with freshwater pools to swim in, amazing fishing, and little stretches of white sand beaches to explore.

1

Ri’s Retreat, Ma’uke

Adjusting to island time and lifestyle is about the biggest problem you can suffer from on Ma’uke. There are a few shops but no cafés in Ma’uke. Fresh home-baked bread comes from the village where loaves are baked in a wood-fired oven. The bungalows are cheap and cheerful and hiring a bike or scooter is the best way to get around. The coral roads are deserted and a day spent cycling round the road is a blissful retreat. Every so often a small, sandy beach comes in sight bordered by rocky outcrops.

Atiu Villas, Atiu

2

Atiu is an island of adventure, discovery, culture and art and Atiu Villas provides a relaxing setting to enjoy this natural environment. Six self-contained Villas are uniquely made from a variety of native timbers and materials from the island. Each spacious villa has a full kitchen, a well-stocked pantry and private veranda to enjoy the expansive views of the lush tropical gardens. Hosts Roger and Kura Malcolm will help organise your tours and activities or provide a home cooked meal in their restaurant. Also on-site is a bar, lawn tennis court, swimming pool, rental vehicles and bicycles.
