Our Credentials Hotelschool The Hague is consistently ranked as one of the top Hotel Schools in the world. Our educational programme has been awarded 11 ‘excellents’ in the most recent audit of Dutch and Flemish universities by the Dutch/Flemish Accreditation Committee. The school is specialised, independent and dedicated. We have a special distinction due to our small scale and intensive education. The selection procedure guarantees a community of talented, ambitious and motivated students that can help you get the best out of yourself. What is more, as a government subsidised school, Hotelschool The Hague offers the best value of all the top international Hotel Schools. In addition to our strong accreditation, our students and alumni win many international awards in recognition of their achievements and talents.

Our Special Philosophy The Bachelor’s programme has been designed to assist you in fulfilling your full potential. It combines theoretical and practical education with team work and individual challenges. The programme is built on a strong didactical foundation of entrepreneurial learning, where you are responsible for your own learning. We facilitate you to achieve the best with a combination of our academic and industry experienced international faculty, the most recent research findings from our Research Centre, and our international partnerships with leading business and hospitality companies. At Hotelschool The Hague, special emphasis is placed on soft skills such as behavioural competencies and interpersonal skills. It is one thing, having a great idea; at Hotelschool The Hague we teach you how to present and sell that idea.

“ Not only have I gained knowledge and acquired skills, I am continuously working on my personal development. The Training and Management skills are challenging but immensely useful. The educational philosophy is that lecturers act as coaches; they encourage you to think critically, question your work while giving you the additional insights you need.” Joshua Wilkinson, British.

You Matter You join a university where you matter. Only two thousand students in total study at Hotelschool The Hague so you’re a name, not a number. You work together in small groups and pairs on projects, learning to share tasks and benefit from each other’s different skills, backgrounds and experience. Small scale translates to small classes and a connected community of students and lecturers. This creates the warm and friendly atmosphere that can be found at both campuses.

“Hotelschool The Hague has the reputation of a world class university with a personal touch. At Hotelschool The Hague you are not just a number, group projects are led and closely monitored by coaches with many years of experience in the field. Their experience becomes an essential part of the learning process during the projects.” Connor Llewellyn Ryterski, German.

Home away from Home The Netherlands is your home for the programme’s duration, except when you’re working abroad during your international internships. Amsterdam or The Hague? You’ll feel immediately at home at either of our modern, well equipped campuses. In The Hague, you live and learn in the lively coastal resort and port of Scheveningen, close to The Hague’s city centre and very close to the beach. In Amsterdam, the campus is situated in a completely refurbished building, just outside the beautiful and historic centre of Amsterdam. Whichever campus you choose, you follow an identical degree programme, learning from the same lecturers, and there is a healthy mix of social and business activities throughout the year.

Life Changing In your first year at Hotelschool The Hague, you live together with all the other first year students in our student residence, the Skotel. The Skotel is both your home and the Hotelschool’s training hotel. Your first year is intensive: living, working, interacting with each other. It’s fun, and the starting point of many lifelong friendships. The variety of nationalities, languages and cultures makes this a unique and valuable experience.

“I can say with confidence that Hotelschool The Hague changed my life and personality in the best way possible. I learnt a lot about hospitality and business management in general, but the most valuable knowledge and experience I gained is based on working and dealing with people who have different cultural backgrounds and behaviours. Yana Borisova, Bulgarian.

The Programme Developed from the demands of the Industry, the Hotelschool The Hague approach is unique. The school’s curriculum is designed to challenge you, mixing the classic hospitality disciplines in the form of real life cases and projects. You will work in small multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams, learning from each other’s skills and cultures. As a university, our courses are based on thorough research and analysis, you are always expected to give a structured report of your findings. You’ll learn to present your results professionally and effectively. Our Training and Management Skills are cited by our alumni as being unique and one of our greatest educational assets. Language competency is also an essential hospitality skill: not only is the degree programme 100% English, you choose a second language from a wide range of modern languages.

08

Applied Theory You aren’t just taught management theories, you apply them directly in practice whilst working on your personal development. You combine individual learning with group work. With your team you work on multi-disciplinary case studies which place you directly in the role of manager or consultant. The programme is divided into three phases. Phase I (one year) is all about hospitality performance; you learn to do the existing well. Phase II (one and a half years) emphasises the tactical application of this knowledge; you improve on the existing. In the final phase, Phase III (one and a half years), you apply your learning and experience strategically; you add value to the existing, searching for new innovative combinations and entrepreneurial solutions. Each phase builds on the previous one, providing a solid theoretical and practical foundation. During all the phases you work on integrated courses reflecting real life situations in which a combination of different subjects like Finance, Sales & Marketing, Human Resources and Strategic Management are covered in one course. For example, Exploring & Structuring is a Phase I course that involves Marketing, IT Processes, Law, Human Resources, and Training and Management Skills. Students are given an international destination and need to pitch a concept for a hotel; they make an external analysis, identify the target market and then design the optimal marketing mix. Students take lectures on theory and have to apply this information to their assignment to show practical applications of the concept. Annual Planning Cycle is a course taken in Phase II of the programme and involves Marketing, Finance, and Training and Management Skills. Students are given a case hotel or resort with key strategic issues and asked to prepare the annual budget. The course involves analysing the external environment, assessing strengths and weaknesses of the hotel, drawing up a strategic plan, formulating action plans for all departments as well as preparing detailed budget proposals. Students need to defend their proposal and get it accepted, just like in a real boardroom.

“I believe that by tackling realistic case studies it helps students best understand the daily challenges of today’s managers. Today, in my working life, I appreciate having been trained in this challenging way. Although I am the most junior team member, I feel noticeably comfortable structuring, analysing and solving complex business issues. I can also work well as part of a team.” Ellen Schmid (2013), German. Eden McCallum, Analyst, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Bachelor Programme Overview The total programme has a duration of four years and is worth 240 European Credits (ECs). Each year is divided into 4 blocks of 10 weeks. It is a full-time programme, which means that you have a study load of 40 hours per week. This involves preparing and following classes, self-study and group work. The programme has a well-balanced structure containing different phases and learning pathways, ensuring variation in the programme and a broad approach to learning. Each block, students are assessed on their knowledge, application of knowledge, behavioural skills, professional development and attitude. According to the entrepreneurial learning concept we encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning process. We support you by multiple learning activities in the programme, such as interactive lectures, workshops, skills training sessions, language training, coaching sessions and tutoring sessions. Next to the organised learning activities you study individually and work in small groups on assignments. You can start the programme in August or in February. In the table you can find an example of a typical programme. Course descriptions can be found on www.hotelschool.nl.

Real World Experience You need real practical experience to succeed. That’s why you follow two external internships as well as two internal operational training courses. In Phase I you gain basic and practical hospitality experience, working for 10 weeks in our own practical outlets/facilities: restaurants, reception and Skotel (our unique training hotel). In addition, on completion of Phase I, you go on a 20 week operational internship from our network of over 250 placement addresses in Europe, where you apply the skills learnt in the first year of our programme. In Phase II you participate in an intensive leadership training programme with a skilled lecturer and a small team of students in a unique, offsite experience. Heading to the Ardennes in Belgium, you experience and experiment with different management styles and approaches. This prepares you for your managerial responsibilities for the 10 weeks you are required to work in a leadership role, managing a team in one of our facilities. This culminates in Phase III, where your management internship forms an essential ingredient of the Launching Your Career (LYCAR) programme; you work in a management role for an organisation of your choice, from Amsterdam to Beijing, from Berlin to Dubai. Once you have completed this, you are industry-ready. It is a great opportunity for students to launch their careers; in fact many graduates find great career opportunities at their placement companies directly after graduating.

“At any other business school you are asked to write a final thesis, at Hotelschool The Hague you have the power to identify and solve the business problem you are passionate about. The greatest benefit for me was the freedom; the faculty guided me rather than instructing me. As a result, LYCAR (Launching Your Career) was a seamless transition to a promising career in Revenue Management.” Kris Nenchev (2013), Bulgarian. Marriott, Revenue Manager, Washington DC, USA.
